I think one important thing that isn’t talked about in this video is the whole ESC culture in Europe. We have watched it ever since we were children, then later with group of friends with drinking games and then with our own children. Bars have ESC nights, events, even movie theaters screen ESC. Even not all are big fans, most of the people watch it or at least check out, who won this year.

As a long time Italian Eurovision fan, I can't believe Eurovision is such a big deal in other countries. Here it's only become somewhat mainstream in 2021 after Måneskin won, and the Grand Final wasn't even aired on the main tv channel until 2016. Whenever I spoke about it to my classmates and friends they had no idea what it was.
You would imagine the older generations might know it from when Italy participated in the past, but no, my dad had never even heard of it before we talked about it, and he still considers it a stupid modern thing, despite him loving the Italian song that won in 1964, without even knowing it participated in the contest back then. The reason Rai stopped participating must be that nobody in Italy cared about it to begin with.
Sanremo on the other hand has always been the TV event of the year and kept its relevance throughout the decades, being a big part of the Italian music industry. That's why it's not a Eurovision national selection, because nobody watches or votes at Sanremo with Eurovision in mind. And that might even be one of the reasons we do well at Eurovision every year.
Although thanks to Måneskin's win and the 2022 Turin edition, the contest has already grown a lot in popularity.
So, every country must have a different relationship with the contest. From Iceland absolutely loving it to Italy only now starting to get into it, from Sweden and Norway taking it so seriously to France and Germany not even caring much.
The only thing that matches what you described, in Italy is football culture. I watched a video of people in a pub in Sweden watching Loreen's win on the screens and it was unbelievable to me, it was the kind of scene I thought were only possible for football, but for a song contest.

@@ehmzed As a Swiss I feel similar. The situation is a bit different (it has always been on the main national TV channel and I think everyone knows what it is). But it‘s not really a big deal. The news will tell us who participates for Switzerland and afterwards who has won. I never heard from someone who organized a party to watch it and I never really heard people talking about it before or after the competition. I notice every year that friends from outside of Switzerland take it much more seriously than we do here.

@@Prafik614 I watched the ESC performance of the song you said right now, I didn't get it at all but that's probably because I'm too young to appreciate that. It's cool it's one of your favourites though, what I love about Eurovision is how it lets us discover music and artists from all sorts of countries that we wouldn't have otherwise even got the chance to know.
Lo Zecchino d'Oro in Finland?? Haha wow! Was it still called Zecchino d'Oro or... Kultainen Paljetti(?) or something?
And yeah I'm not very familiar with the show, only with some songs that came out of it in the past and are very famous and still taught in kindergartens I think. But the one time I watched some scenes of the show it did seem quite weird indeed lol. I mean, just children singing without a clue, probably forced by their parents.

@@ehmzed It was translated as ”Lapset laulavat lapsille” = Children Singing to Children. At the time I didn’t even realize it was a singing competition, for me it was just children singing. Back then, in the 80’s there was not many tv programmes for children, this was one of those few, so everybody watched it. I think for me the weird part was, as a finnish child, how lively the children were in their performance 😄 Sometimes the main singer could be nervous but back choir were giving their all, always, all of them. With hands in their back, they would sway, nod their heads in sync, smile from ear to ear. I used to do gymnastics as a child in the 80’s and it was very East German influenced sport, with horrible training, painfull and mentally violent and we always had to smile like maniacs, even I felt like crying. I always was wondering, do these children in Lapset Laulaa Lapsille, really like singing that much or are they acting.
I agree, ESC is great way to hear about artist, you would never find without ESC. And I love how at least I will listen to those songs and think, if I like them or not. In the radio, the same song would just play in the backgroung or in the Spotify recommentation i could just skip the song after 10 seconds. And fans are like a huge bookclub, we talk about music, what we liked about the song and what we didn’t like about it. You don’t have that anywhere else 🤩

It's not directly true, but the voting has been a mess for decades. This is where large singers/bands are not going to risk going in, why impact their reputation on a low score if it has nothing to do with the performance?
And people who are actually talented, and have a chance of making it? Same thing, why have that attached to their name?
So you get countries like the UK, who produce music in every genre charting across the planet and a constant stream of talent, who almost only get people trying to enter who are people with no other options or chances of really making it. Or just those not great, who have to perform live and it shows.
Last year was the first time someone really talented took the chance, and even then I doubt he would have been as high without all the Ukraine help the UK has done.

As a European, my impression is that the American states are in many ways as different as the European countries. Yes, you all have the same language, but here in Europe most people can speak English, so we can also communicate with each other. A song competition between the various states is the way to do it. In addition, you can invite the Canadian provinces and territories, and perhaps Mexico too. Don't expect it to be as epic as Eurovision right away. Give it a few years to establish itself, support the competition and as an audience. If they do the same in South America, Asia and Africa, we can meet in a decade or two for the world final.

They should really let each state hold their own finals, or at least have them pick their own artists, so it really feels like the artists represent their state, instead of just some random artist getting assigned to a state. As a result, it kinda lacked a bit of the diversity in styles that makes Eurovision so much fun.

I'm from the UK so this year I was just wishing that Sam Ryder was competing again for us after he did so well in 2022 - the latest one was a good spectacle (we hosted on behalf of Ukraine) but was kind of soured by the 'runaway winner' results reveal which was why I didn't include it above.

I think an American version of the Eurovison Song Contest would be cool. The only issue is that many countries in the 2 Americas aren't especially politically stable, which would exclude them being hosts. Still, I think it would be a great way to increase cultural interaction.
There was an American song contest that was modelled after Eurovision, but unfortunately I believe that was only limited to US states, which really misses the point of international cultural relations.

I watched Eurovision on RUclips one year, but it was a past performance. It was rather interesting. I also watched a mini documentary on Eurovision, and it showed highlights on each year of the contest, except for years where the video was lost. I dont remember the count, but I want to say 3 years are missing from the collection. 1968 was the first year Eurovision was filmed in color. Since the actual movie about Eurovision, there was talk by the Eurovision committed about creating 2 new franchises, where one would be for the Anericas, and one for Asia. If these ever get created, who knows how well it would work out. I heard Australia would be moved the Asian franchise, if an Asian version of Eurovision was created. I believe the Americas version would be called Amerivision, if it was created.

    • @davenwin1973
      @davenwin1973 Год назад

@swedishmetalbear I thought it would be a version covering both North and South America, not just the US. The music industry in the US makes no true effort to promote certain artists, and music styles. Many European groups and artists are unable to secure music contracts here, and sometimes, artists from the US, like Anastacia, also couldn't get her music played on radio, because after listening to a UK podcast, she mentions that she was blacklisted by 1 radio company, that Sony Music did not release her 3rd album in the US, and focused on the countries where she is successful. She didn't mention the company by name, but it was iHeart Radio (then Clear Channel Radio). That company owns so many radio stations in all formats, that they decide who succeeds, and who doesn't.
As for American Song Contest, the industry here does not want to follow European music standards, and I believe this was done on purpose to make it a flop, so it won't be tried again. I'll have to see if I can find video clips online, that won't cost me anything to watch, just to see how bad the US version really was.

Hey JT - another great video, thanks. I'd disagree on the presenter's comment that the top 5 deliberately send in bad acts to make up for the advantage. Everyone wants to win. In terms of money hosting the contest, there was a situation when Ireland won in 1992, 1993 and 1994, then again in 1996 (4 times in 5 years). That must have hurt. It was only from 2004 that a semi-final was added (due to the number of countries competing and hence making the show too long). This was when the automatic entry for the "big 5" began. And yes, you should do more Eurovision reacts - lots of great moments. Would love to see them, very much enjoy your channel :)
