Malta 2022 makes my blood boil not only for all the reasons you mentioned, but because Ritmu by Aidan would've been one of my favorite Eurovision entries of the decade had it won MESC. If Emma had continued to Eurovision with Out of Sight, I would've been salty but understood - but the fact that she beat out a song that is MUCH better than I Am What I Am, that had a real chance of qualifying (IN MALTESE, mind you) is a huge slap in the face in my opinion. Mostly accurate, but I disagree that our 2024 song is generic. Not saying it should have had a chance to win or anything, I think it fits perfectly well in 12th place, but in terms of musical theory, it is objectively the most interesting song we've had in a long time, with Blood and Glitter from 2023 being a possible exception (fully agree, no idea how that one netted a last place).

    • @JochenSchoenherr
      @JochenSchoenherr Месяц назад +3

@@lordkampiIt's not really true that NDR always sends in songs that are suitable for radio. This is a prejudice (possibly fueled by the horrible NF 2022). They didn't make it in 2023 or 2021 either. Jendriks song is really not good (especially the terrible staging), but it's not a radio-friendly pop song. I don't know exactly what it is (maybe some kind of nursery rhyme?).
The UK, on the other hand, sends an average radio pop song to the ESC every year and is usually celebrated for it by large parts of the bubble. This no longer works with the ESC itself. Only Sam Ryder's outstanding performance saved the UK 2022.

9:30 Minor correction about Ireland 2023. The reason Connor took on the lead singer role was because David Whelan, the actual lead singer, was in a serious accident before the national final, apparently suffering a fall from 20 feet. He reportedly was in surgery for his shoulder the day before the national final, hence why he was wearing a sling in the national final. I've seen them live, too, and honestly, David is a far better performer than Connor. It's a shame it turned out that way, I've always said if circumstances were different, maybe he could've salvaged it??? Idk, still a nothing song.

    • @IABITVpresents

@CamacanMMC Tbh I think that the Gabe theory was the most plausible, because it for sure made me believe for a while that Connor was the lead singer the whole time from the way Connor was the one to be ALWAYS tweeting about Eurovision. Just him. I don't think or know whether the actual lead singer would've made this generic ass song work though. They would've needed to write something less generic, afterall they had a fanbase who spent a lot of money just to vote for Wild Youth in Eurosong alone so it's possible they would've voted them with something way better too

Okay so I have a story about Jendrik’s „I don’t feel hate”, but it’s a tad bit unhinged.
So this summer I was walking home from a bbq party at 1 a.m. TERRIFIED because there were stories about wolves in the area. My friends walked me to my neighborhood but I had to go the last bit alone. And mind you, this wasn’t in the city but in forgotten tiny little town in the middle of nowhere. To cheer myself up I thought about the „happiest” song I know and for some reason only Jendrik’s masterpiece came to my mind so I played „I dont feel hate”. As I got near my house I heard howling through my headphones, looked right, and saw… something. A dog? A wolf? No clue. I ran like crazy and Jendrik’s song was the soundtrack to my panic.

Not really justified. Calling it "the musical atrocity" is totally a personal taste, Eurovision accepts all genres, even if it's "kindergarden music" or something. And lyrics actually make a lot of sense, they're far from random/cliche set of words like Ireland 2023, Malta 2022 or Bulgaria 2022. And he was so positive, a total representation of the message of the song. Only the way Germany chose it, quickly and internally, raises some questions.

Reiley is the only Faroese singer to ever make it past the national final, and sadly it's one of the worst Danish performance.
Faroe Islands were so exited about Reiley winning in Denmark, that they broadcasted his semi-final and the final with Faroese speakers. And we had a politician at the Eurovision trying to make Faroe Islands part of Eurovision.
And this year, Eurovision wasn't even shown on the Faroese TV.

YUP he was doing the “microphone to audience” (which similar to Aus 2018 is often used when the singer knows their voice is breaking or they need to catch a breath) thing too often and holding the mic wayyyy further away from his mouth than he should’ve done. Worst part for me was that they were sitting really close to us and he walked out, on his own, like almost immediately after the results were completed. Maybe he really needed a piss (and after being trapped in the world’s ugliest jumpsuit for 5+ hours, who wouldn’t) but the optics of that move weren’t great, not very professional or good-sportsmanlike. Made it seem like he felt they deserved to go through despite the performance being, at best, half-there.

What I’m amazed at is how badly Denmark has done in the post-lockdown era of Eurovision. Four contests, from 2021 to 2024, and Denmark hasn’t qualified a single time. Do they make it five in a row in 2025?

I will always defend Denmark 2021. Yes, the juries hated it, but it was fun, they were 8th in televote (the only country where they didn't get any points was Moldova) and it was the first time since "Only Teardrops" when a Danish Eurovision song reached number 1 in charts in Denmark.
Since then though? Yeah, I don't know what are they doing. 2022 didn't even reach top 40 in Denmark, 2023, as mentioned in the video, was a trainwreck (although it probably had some chances if it was performed well), and when Saba won my only thought was that they picked the blandest song so there would be nothing to hate it for.

For me Hendrik's song always had a dark side, like a desperate spell against anxiety and depression. And indeed, its video depicts people being discriminated and harassed, who then return the violence to their oppressors. If it had been staged that way, it might have made some sense, apart from being silly, but maybe that was way too much Brechtian estrangement for the decent German broadcasters.

I enjoy your perspective and reasoning, especially when you point out details I’d usually just skip over and move on. The songs on your list all land on my 'meh' list - they don’t irritate me, but they don’t excite me either. Honestly, I tend to appreciate the weird, shocking, and downright bizarre entries - I naturally tend to balance out the cheesy 'singing-my-heart-out' ballads and those Swedish B-side pop songs that already felt outdated 10 years ago. On my top 10 list there would be some of the fan favourites, but to avoid cyber bullying, I choose not to disclose.

So, as you asked it at the end, why do I love it so much :
      - Azeri language (I wish the whole song was in Azeri though)
      - Phenomenal ethnic vocals from Ilkan, among the best of the whole competition
      - The mystical vibe got me addicted
      - The instrumental is so delicate and beautiful with all the instruments blending amazingly well together
      - A one of a kind at Eurovision that feels fresh
      - FINALLY something special from Azerbaijan after a whole existence of box-standard Melodifestivalen rejects (only examples being 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2019)
I only hope people will not whine at them for going back to send average dull pop entries with no soul 'cause I'm sure that's what's gonna happen this year, unless there's a miracle. But for once they sent something ethnic which feels captivating and they got sacked. The only thing I'll agree with is that the staging was awful it shows they didn't know what to do with the song (actually they could've inspired themselves from the music video to create a staging with maybe chinese shadows)
