Thank you for your review. I just bought an LG Ultrafine 27UQ85R. Overall, the primary differences between the model you reviewed and the model I bought lie model year (LG 27UQ850: 2022 and LG 27UQ85R: 2023), and the inclusion of a Self Calibration Sensor in the LG 27UQ85R. The other specifications and features are very similar, suggesting that both models would perform similarly in most use cases according to my source, who says LG 27UQ85R-W stands out for its higher brightness and similar color coverage as the Dell U2723QE. In contrast, the Dell U2723QE offers a broader range of refresh rates and more comprehensive connectivity options, including additional USB ports and an Ethernet RJ45 port. Making a choice between LG and Dell should depend on your specific needs, such as the importance of brightness, color accuracy, refresh rate, and the variety of connectivity options! I had a hard time making my choice - I went for LG. Time will show if that is a good choice. :)
My brother congratulations for this great content, unlike other youtubers I've seen in your videos you speak with very valid technical arguments, excellent work, I have a MacBook Pro and all the accessories I've bought have been based on your recommendations. Keep it up.
I came to watch this hoping to find out if it's necessary to use this usb-b port to have usb hub working only to find out the subject missing and getting misleading information about this port being for calibration ;) I don't get it why the usb hub in the monitor can't be connected with the usb-c used for display signal and power so that one do not need to connect yet another cable to get peripherals connected to the monitor (keyboard and mouse) working?
I bought the Dell equivalent at the start of this year for design work as an architecture student, its been absolutely fantastic all round. I think compared to the Studio Display the LG and the Dell are going to better for most use cases, you’d be nuts to spend way more given the LG and Dell provide everything you need for most people (certainly me) and are all around great to use. Also great video again they’re getting better and better 👍
I also got the Dell and I hate it. It does not work well with Macs. I ended up getting an Apple Studio Display and it's amazing. Love it. The Dell was 1/2 the price so I suppose it was my fault for going for the cheap option. I'm currently using the Dell as an extended monitor but I'm thinking of just giving the Dell to my wife cause it sucks so bad.
@@alastairclarkecould you please share why the Dell didn’t work well with your Mac? Was it scaling issues and is it a MacBook or Mac mini? I’m doing some research before purchase.
@@ElayneOkaya Mac Mini M2 Pro. Extremely buggy. Scaling does not work. I have done some research and LG monitors seem to work better with Macs. There are more options within the "Display" tab in Settings. I absolutely love the Apple Studio Display. I currently have it next to the Dells and it's painful. I avoid looking at the Dells as much as possible.
I'm a big fan of LG monitors. I'm using a 29" Ultrawide as my work monitor and have never had any issues with it. I picked up an ASUS ProArt 27 (1440p) for my personal desktop a while ago and was very happy with it until I watched this video --- that LG Ultrafine is a very compelling monitor.
Does this monitor have Hardware Calibration, true 10 bit, what is the Adobe RGB percentage coverage for photo printing? Are the prints the same as the image in the monitor?
Thank you for this video. I find it a bit confusing with the model numbers. I've seen three so far, 27UN880P-B, 27UN880-B, and 27UN880P-B.AEU. The price difference is a couple hundred dollars, but there aren't any obvious differences...
Great review! I have tried Dell U2723QE next to iMac 24” that I got and I didn’t like it. I mean matte screen kinda kills it and ppi and contrast definitely speaks out for itself. I got stuck between two: PHILIPS Creator Series 27E2F791 and this LG you reviewed. both dell, lg and Philips uses the same LG ips black panel. Actually I like the Philips design better. They claim their monitor compliments apple laptops best, Right now Philips is $399 on Amazon. What you think about that?
4k 27" monitors are in general very bad for mac users. This is because of the 160 PPIs and the way how apple scales the resolution either by factor 1x or 2x. The result is, that the windows are either too large or too small. You can work around that by using a 1.5x scale factor, but this will consume e lot of GPU power and the image won't look good, because of pixel interpolation. Unfortunately I also just learned this, after I bought this screen. I'm just wondering how anybody could really misguide people here on youtube by telling them this to be a great monitor for Mac.
I wonder how was this fact missed in the video! Just a few seconds of "apple display may be a bit sharper" does not represent the difference. Thank you for saying this!
If you don't need nano IPS and want to save $150, look at the 27BP85UN-W. For $350 you get 400 nit brightness, 1200:1 contrast ratio, 90w power delivery. And since it's technically a business class monitor you get a 3 year warranty instead of 1 year for the consumer models.
8:21 - I think that's the upstream port for the USB hub, although I thought that the USB-C port was used as the upstream for that. Check it and let us know.
My guess is the USB B port is to connect non USBC computer with a USB A port to allow the usb hub ports to work at least that's what other monitors usually have.
Thank you Kyle. Loving your reviews. Do you know if the 32UQ85R-W is the 32 inch version of the same monitor? States it is nano IPS Black as well.... right now it is only $100 more than the 27 which I find very appealing.
Great video. I'm using the previous version of the 27UD88-W and thinking of taking the opportunity to upgrade as my girlfriend needs a monitor. Definitely gonna look into this one. Apple studio display seems crazy expensive (although I was incredibly happy with my old thunderbolt display that I used for years)
The Studio is definitely a nice display, I think more so just for the over build quality vs the panel quality. At least that's my experience. I was quite willing to sacrifice a bit of pixel density for less than half the cost.
I've used a LG 27UN850-W for video editing for about 2 years and I've been quite happy with it. I have needed to do a bit of black correction but I'd buy another LG for sure.
Your review covered a lot of ground in an even handed manner. Thanks. However, based on your comments and reviews on Amazon and LG sites, it seems the monitor is "adequate" but not "perfect." I've watched/read quite a few reviews in the past little while and given the amount of $$ for a new Mac Mini M2 with 32 GB and 1 TB, for my purposes of mainly video editing, it seems the Apple Studio display better matches the level of the MacMini. two things I think - one is cost, the other is bandwidth. A lot of machines in professional settings that aren't setup for gaming don't have high enough bandwidth ports to handle more than 60hz, so you would end up offering something that will only work for a select number of machines. You could also make the case that in those settings a 60hz panel is likely good enough for most of that work.

Do you know the difference between this and the LG Ultrafine 27UQ850V-W? Is the 27UQ850V-W just an updated model? I can't seem to find much information about it online. Also, do they support Adobe RGB? All I can see from either of them is that they do 98% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. But, they also say that they are geared towards photographers.
A very good review. Your personal experience and testing is important. I'm looking to replace my old NEC PA271 for my future Mac Studio. I want the color calibration capability and accuracy.
Morning, so I just got an LG 32” monitor for my m1 MacBook….on connecting everything looks fine the colors are popping but once I use the Lg calibration studio to calibrate it for 709…. It looks washed Anyone here knows a solution
Is this monitor the latest and is it gloss or matte. I can't see very well on a matte monitor. I am onmy third monitor return because I use it for Text documents and the words look pixelated. It gives me a headache.
LG has the most complicated naming They're all the same with a letter difference, and no one seems to carry this exact model. Did they update this with a newer model number yet again?
I refuse to buy a display with a matte finish. They are all trash. Why go through the trouble of manufacturing a hi res screen only to destroy clarity with a matte finish? They look as if you’re looking at them through a pair of cheap glasses with scratched up plastic lenses. Bring back glossy displays! There’s a reason Apple sticks with glossy displays.
Was looking to buy this after seeing your vide (confirmed all the specs I needed) seems it is out of stock and now a new model announced the 27UQ850V-W - it only says IPS and not nano IPS any knowledge or speculation if this is still the same Nano technology you showed here that is better?
I can't seem to find if it covers actually covers 100% Of Rec 709 as well. Does it? I know it's pretty similar to SRGB, but for my colorgrading workflow i would like to have the versatility to switch to Rec709 since it's what i'll be mostly exporting too. but im not sure how accurate would it look if all the reviews i could find only talk about the P3 gamut. If anyone can help me please so i can decide whether to buy this monitor or not.
It appears that this model is either discontinued or completely sold out in Canada. Any recommendations for a similar model? I've messaged the LG Canada Facebook site, waiting for an answer. Thank you for this great in-depth review. It makes total sense to me and will pair well with my new Mac Mini M2 Pro arriving in a few days :)
I bought one with my M2 Ultra and brought it back right away. It was clearly inferior to the Apple monitor which I bought. I do a lot of editing and the LG was a horrible strain on my eyes and never had the sharp depth that the Apple 27: monitor has. It's not even close.
Hi Kyle. What do you think about new released Dell 27" 2k 120 Hz Black IPS U2724DE monitıor. I am using 24 " and planning to upgrade to 27". But some people say, because of Mac scaling dont use 4k, use 5k or 2k monitör. What dou think about using a good 2k monitör for Mac. My eyes are not so good for reeading small text.
Use the vectoroscope and the histogram and set the appropriate color profile on yor video file you will never have problem on any smartphone, unless you have a color grading rated monitor and a color grding room with wide spectrum 6500k light, accurate mid gray paint on your wall, etc never trust you eyes but trust your instruments. 🤷🏿♀️
I almost crapped. I have a few. years older version of this monitor... but more interesting I have those exact legos (baby Yoda and mandalorian) by the stand under the panel of my monitor.... lol
if im ideally looking in the 300 ish dollar range, would you say the upgrades on this model are worth the extra cash? or do you think ill be satisfied with a more affordable older model? for context - im a musician, i do *very* occasional photo and video editing, but not on a professional level. but most of what i do is work in logic for audio editing, sometimes with video playback if im composing music for visual media... thanks!
Does anyone know if I can connect Logitech MX keyboard over usb to this monitor? I am using macbook pro m2 and there are some comments on the internet that it will work but some says it wouldn't.
If we are talking about offerings that are massively more expensive then the best is the Pro Display XDR, not the studio. I doubt that the studio is even in the second place.
@@rafaeldomenikos5978 Agree, but they are not massively more expensive anymore. I got 2 Used LG 5k Ultrafines which used to be $1,5k for $250 each. The image quality is impeccable, I had 4K LG and difference is night and day
He's wrong. I have a 4K 27" Dell as my 2nd monitor with my 27" Retina iMac and it matches really well and looks just like the iMac almost (not quite as nice but the DPI is perfect for letters etc).
I have a webcam and a USB-Dongle for another Input Device so already 2 USB-Ports are needed. Now if I add a USB-Mic or other stuff the LG already offers no ports anymore and I would have to go with another USB-Hub. Thats why I am considering the Dell because it offers more inputs (and the LG is not available in my country so far, but would be nice to know the price here because if its much cheaper than the DELL, I might rethink again
I have been having issues and the most annoying one is that All folders are of a very small view and the text as well is small like 5pt font regardless of the normal zoom feature in windows. Even at 150% on Webpages the zoom works but in any folder like a C drive all the text and folders are of a very small size and i dont know how to fix this problem. The monitor is set as the recomended settings and I am using a RADEON XFX 6700 GPU. Help me if you can.
Can anyone please tell me whether I can use this monitor for an M3 Macbook Pro 16 with a single cable type c connection? I have this question because the Pro 16 comes with a 140-watt charging brick so just wanted to know whether the power from the monitor would be good enough? Also wanted to know whether the power will be enough to charge a M3 Max chip as well. Thanks in advance.
Hi there Kyle. Top notch content. As always ... and really high end production as well. However, I do think there is a place for a Studio Display. Especially for its 5K res, true AiO solution, build quality, seamless integration with Macs and clean desk space ... just to name a few benefits of having an ASD. Different people different priorities. In the end I think it all comes down to a personal preference. In matters of taste, there can be no disputes.
@@PavelKartsel Ok! PPI is just a technical feature, measure for density so to speak. Personal preference is whether a slight loss of sharpness bothers you or not🤗
@@zoganje I mean the fact of sharpens loss at 1.5x scaling (which is the only comfort one for this monitor) may be deciding for many people working with texts. I think missing this point making in a video called "The PERFECT 4K Display for Mac" is very misleading. No monitor can be perfect for Mac with 163 PPI.
I a looking for a monitor for my M2 Pro Mac Mini. Based on your review I am seriously considering this monitor. I went to a local store today that has Apple products. I wanted to see what an LG monitor looked like in person. They had the M1 iMac, and a M1 Mac Mini hooked up to a LG 27UL500. Obviously a lower quality LG. However, the iMac monitor looked much better than the LG. How would you compare this monitor to the iMac? In this video you seemed to say that the LG 27 UQ850 is close to the Apple studio monitor in display quality. PS: I am replacing a 217 in intel iMac with a great monitor.
Awesome thanks! You verified this in your calibration? Do they not list it in the specs because you're supposed to know that since DCI-P3 is much larger than Rec 709? Thanks for the help!
i was thinking about picking up a 24md4kl for my mac mini m2 but was confused about the ports on the back. I was under the impression the ports in the back are capable of charging laptops tablets phones etc, so I thought you couldn't plug in something like the mac mini m2 2003. Wouldnt a charge from this monitor damage the mac mini? How is your display set up? thru the thunderbolt port? If so do you think its worth upgrading to a thunderport 4 over the 3? thanks I appreciate the input~

How would you compare this monitor to U2723QE, given that Dell one is also 2+ years old?
I'm tired of 60hz being the standard. 90hz is noticeably better and is still appreciated by non gamers.
I am farsighted. For this reason, 27" 4k 16:9 monitors did not suit me. This model is a second monitor in resolution 2k. But the monitor is good.
I'd like a 32 inch monitor to fit a whole song on the screen when producing music. Also, a faster refresh would feel nicer.
Love my LG's. but the port layout is horrendous if you're using different mounting solutions.
What is the Delta E for this monitor? I couldn't find the spec which makes me suspicious.
Can someone recommend best 27" Monitor for Mac Studio Silicon under $1,000? Cheers!
Down to 450 now in germany (with taxes in euro so its 10% more in us dollar)
How about the Samsung Viewfinity S8? Is it a good alternative?
Has anyone looked into the 32" version? LG 32UQ750-B
I almost crapped. I have a few. years older version of this monitor... but more interesting I have those exact legos (baby Yoda and mandalorian) by the stand under the panel of my monitor.... lol
In my previous comment when I say display quality I mean picture quality.
if im ideally looking in the 300 ish dollar range, would you say the upgrades on this model are worth the extra cash? or do you think ill be satisfied with a more affordable older model? for context - im a musician, i do *very* occasional photo and video editing, but not on a professional level. but most of what i do is work in logic for audio editing, sometimes with video playback if im composing music for visual media... thanks!
Is this the same as 27UQ85R-W? Maybe just the european name?
Does anyone know if I can connect Logitech MX keyboard over usb to this monitor? I am using macbook pro m2 and there are some comments on the internet that it will work but some says it wouldn't.
It has HDR, and when you enable it on Macbook, the picture turns into something ugly.
this isn't perfect display. Perfect is Studio Display, second place is 5K ultrafine. This is BS.
having troubles reading the title are we?
If we are talking about offerings that are massively more expensive then the best is the Pro Display XDR, not the studio. I doubt that the studio is even in the second place.
@@rafaeldomenikos5978 Agree, but they are not massively more expensive anymore. I got 2 Used LG 5k Ultrafines which used to be $1,5k for $250 each. The image quality is impeccable, I had 4K LG and difference is night and day
does it have kvm switch or hotkey to quickly switch between mac and pc ?

A guy told me that 4k at 27 is too much for DPI of letters, so that you need to rescale them up, so a 32 inch that is 3440x1440 is better.
He's wrong. I have a 4K 27" Dell as my 2nd monitor with my 27" Retina iMac and it matches really well and looks just like the iMac almost (not quite as nice but the DPI is perfect for letters etc).
Supposedly BenQ PD3205UA is good for a Mac but I have not seen a good review.
Hi Kyle. Would you let me know where to get the screensaver you are using at the beginning of the video please?
I have a webcam and a USB-Dongle for another Input Device so already 2 USB-Ports are needed. Now if I add a USB-Mic or other stuff the LG already offers no ports anymore and I would have to go with another USB-Hub. Thats why I am considering the Dell because it offers more inputs (and the LG is not available in my country so far, but would be nice to know the price here because if its much cheaper than the DELL, I might rethink again
If this monitor offered a refresh rate of 120 Hz or 144 Hz, I’d be more interested.
Exactly. 60 Hz in 2023 is laughable.
Why, are you using it for gaming?
buy LG ultragear
@@rizkymaulana4318 agree - sounds like someone needs a gaming monitor, this isn’t one
Try browsing the web on an iPad Pro and you will know who much nicer 120hz feels. That and and a glossy panel would be an instant buy for me
Halt and catch Fire!!! One of the best shows ever!
Thanks in advance.
yup, you can!
I just bought this monitor on a Black Friday deal. Really excited to get it as a second monitor (I already have LG 4k Ultrafine) next week!
get at least a 49in this is too small for 2023 and on
Really great and informative review, thanks!
PPI is not a personal preference and that's exactly why people choose Studio Display
@@PavelKartsel I agree but most people I know just can't see it.
PS: I am replacing a 217 in intel iMac with a great monitor.
the blacks wil not be as deep as the imac screen
Your voice and face don't match
Feels like your voice shldve been slightly deeper
constructive, I'll let god know
Perfect? 🤣🤣🤣 your standards are very low
Great review, thanks! Does this monitor cover 100% of Rec 709? Thanks!
yes
Awesome thanks! You verified this in your calibration? Do they not list it in the specs because you're supposed to know that since DCI-P3 is much larger than Rec 709? Thanks for the help!
Please also tell us about the speakers you have
i was thinking about picking up a 24md4kl for my mac mini m2 but was confused about the ports on the back. I was under the impression the ports in the back are capable of charging laptops tablets phones etc, so I thought you couldn't plug in something like the mac mini m2 2003. Wouldnt a charge from this monitor damage the mac mini? How is your display set up? thru the thunderbolt port? If so do you think its worth upgrading to a thunderport 4 over the 3? thanks I appreciate the input~
it the cable will automatically recognize your mini doesnt need power. so it wil just not give power, should work fine
can you daisy chain two of them together?
lg please please remove center lg logo please
have this monitor the KVM Switch system? thanks
Does it have the picture by picture feature ? And does it come with mount arm?
What's the difference between this is and the LG 27UK650-W ?
thunderbolt port
Thank you so much for this video! This is what I was looking for! 🙌 One question, is the brightness adjustable through the Mac keyboard? Or does this really only work with Thunderbolt displays?
Just dont buy Samsung M8 guys...learned the hard way.
Pleate tell me whats wrong with M8?
