I have also done A LOT of GPS testing and found that an ELRS RX will cause GPS interference if it is not connected to a TX. So when warming up the GPS I recommend turning on your transmitter. You also need about 10 minutes (or more) for the GPS to download the almanac. Excellent video! BF 4.5.1 will support MSP GPS data if you are using a PhoenixUAS mRID remote ID module.
Finally someone that explained everything. Thanks so much. You answered so many questions for me. I had it working just fine before watching your video but didn't understand everything. Now I do, thanks to you. But I have a question for you about GPS. Yes I was doing exactly the same as you in regards to power the GPS without the vtx. But it still takes some time to get over 6 satellites. Yes I use M10 also. But my DJI model 3 pro gets about 15 satellites in a very short period, and with the vtx ON. What can I do to get that on my 5 inch drone? If they do it we should be able to achieve the same thing!

@@andrewmedia3568 So I've tested it at the field and I can confirm it works as expected, one thing I did notice, is that it's a bit shaky for me with the iFlight Nazgul eco DC5, maybe it's the Angle settings, It's almost as if the GPS rescue kicks the throttle inconsistently, you can hear that it kicks the throttle then stop then kick the throttle again, until it eventually get back home, and so I wonder if it's a normal behaviour.
I do this on analog quads. For digital, I use Vifly GPS Mate. They're fantastic! But I suppose there's no reason you couldn't use a pit switch on a digital vtx...
very good video.... i am getting familiar of FPV drones and this video is highly interesting. i am studying purchasing an iflight, doubt about a Nazgul.... that eco one or the iH3, that looks like the iH3 can fligh around 10 minute or so.... coming from DJI drones to me it is very important the gPs option but i consider too short a 4 or 5 minute flight, that's why Iam studying possibilities. I will be using it for cinematics bur some actions will be involved too. I lately purchased that hybrid dji FPV andI am getting used to it little by little
great vid. Ive tested GPS return to home flying LOS, without the goggles. Its pretty cool to see in person, make sure to set Minimum distance to home 15 meters. ABout 50Feet ive found its far enough for the GPS to gain a proper heading.
The angled mode trick is a really good idea esp. for the low and high-speed flights I do. Lifesaver! Thank you for a great and thorough tutorial for the latest Betaflight/FW (at the time of this recording) as other guides I've used don't really work that well.
New subs here from the Philippines bro.. i mean im a Filipino but based now in Qatar.. thank you for the detailed setup of GPS rescue, gives me confidence now to rebuild and get back into the hobby... Anyway super impressed with the tuning on this 5inch setup of yours bro.. can you share your pids or maybe make a video on how you tune your quads bro, also how you setup your HUD?🤙🏼 Godbless and more power bro!
Thanks for subbing! I just use the supafly 5" freestyle preset PID for all my quads. I will probably do a betaflight setup video pretty soon since I've had a few people ask about it.
@@andrewmedia3568 Do you have any more information on the device you used to power the FC pre-flight for GPS connection? I think you powered it with a 2S LiPo?
Great video. Thanks 🙏🏼 Can you please tell me more about the quad build ? Are there any 3.5” to 5” freestyle BNF quads with GPS worth buying that are configured ready to fly ? Any suggestions ? Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 💪🏽👍🏽
Great video. Worked fairly well with my 10-inch quad. The descents are a little violent once it gets over the home location. But at least it consistently returns itself over the home location. Ideally, by then I'd have control again. Not sure why the descents are not as smooth as those in the video.
try changing your decent rate. mine is 1.5 meters per second for a 5" quad. Try making it slower or faster and see what works better. Also larger quads have more prop wash when descending down into their own dirty air.
Sanity Checks needs to be OFF entirely. If you're a long range flier and you lost the control link out in say the mountains, failing sanity checks means it will drop your quad far out there if one of the many conditions are not met. If you've seen a "flyaway", it is the quad basically flying off in the wrong direction VERY SLOWLY on it's own in gps rescue mode, it doesn't just shoot off wildly. you have more than ample time to adjust your radio positioning to manually fly the quad back.
This is so helpful mate. Actually explaining each thing and what it does etc is needed! Can you? (or have you?) done a video explaining the RSSI & LQ numbers? I have them in my OSD but I haven't a clue what they actually mean. Cheers mate! ;)
RSSI DBM is the Receiver Signal Strength measured in DB. RSSI and RSSI DBM are a little different. RSSI DBM is a more real accurate representation of the receiver signal strength. for example lets say your radio output is 1000mw or 1W that is equal to 30Db. LQ is link quality. This show how many data packets are actually making it to the drone. So an LQ of 100 means 100% of data sent is getting through, an LQ of 70 means 70% of the data is making it to the drone. That data being your stick inputs from the radio. Hope this helps.
GPS ground speed doesn’t care about wind, FYI. It’s actual speed over the ground AFTER wind has affected the quad. The quad has no way to know how much wind it’s flying in. If you set it to 47mph and there’s a 30mph headwind, you are asking the quad to try to fly back at 77mph through the air. That may cause some problems depending on the build.
Man thank you for this I swear I think you felt my soul lol. I just ordered everything build my 7inch and I ended up getting the GEPRC GEP-M10 gps and was wondering how ima figure it out then boom your video pops up haha.
helpful video mate! i have a question. i've set everything like you showed but when i switch gps rescue, the quad on the way home, can't stay at set altitude. it keeps floating up and down. do you know why?
The Failsafe on a switch is just for testing (simulating a real failsafe). You wouldn't normally set that up on a switch and leave it. The GPS on a switch is just that, it initiates GPS rescue. That would be good for if you lost video signal then you would switch gps rescue on. And of course if you lose radio link it will automatically go to gps rescue and come back.
@@andrewmedia3568 i tested my new nazgul eco a few days ago with Your setup with Failsafe on a switch and everything was fine. Angle and 1,2s throttle up and it came back in no time. @@andrewmedia3568 And also increase "max throttle" otherwise the quad will loose altitude. I think a lower target speed like 15m/s, with a greatest max angle and max throttle seems more suitable for windy situations
Thank you for this tutorial. Just set it up and will tested. One question beside the gps thing. I see you have Bee35. Do you have any separate video about this quad? I just recently build it and looking for some cine PID and rate for it.😊
Ok so I did fist testing this today and results are not the best. At 1st when switch Gps Rescue, quad is climbing super fast than turn and when start coming back is doing it almost sideways 😳 its not aligned front to the HP. This is weird. In addition like others write here when descending, it doing some weird movement, super not stable and going down to fast. One time I did let him auto landing but this was just a drop from about 10meters, good this was on the high grass and nothing broken.🤣 Still it doing job to RTH and than I can fly or land myself, but.....need more improvement. I did tried to adjust descent speed, ascent speed etc, level, calibrate quad, but not much changed. Quad is on BF 4.5- all settings followed as on video.
It should punch up pretty quick initially to avoid hitting objects, the decent and landing are always the hardest part and a bit more difficult for smaller or whoop quads. Often very wobbly on the decent. It shouldn't turn off until it touches down though. Play around with decent rates. Really the main purpose is that if you lose video or RX link that the quad will come back close enough for you to gain video and or control again to land yourself or keep flying. In a real situation you would almost always take back control. keep testing it and let me know what happens.
Great video i gave a quick question when i set arm without fix has long has i plug my quod in with my usb power bank 5v and get gps lock first will it still work ? gps i mean ?. Has betaflight says it will fall out of the sky if its set to on ?
Arm without fix just means it will let you arm and fly without the minimum number of sats but GPS wont work. As long as you get the minimum number of sats locked before you arm and takeoff, GPS rescue will work. If you set arm without fix to off, the quad wont arm until you have enough sats. Its kinda like a safety feature but sometimes you want to fly and don't care about GPS rescue, so setting allow arm without fix allows you to do that.
Thank you for posting a great video. I do have a question regarding the LAND mode in failsafe, Does the LAND option does a GPS rescue and then lands ? Meaning, does the quad returns to the take off location and then lands ? Thank you in advance
Whether you use GPS rescue on a switch or Actually lose radio link and failsafe, the drone will return to the takeoff location and land on its own. its all part of the GPS rescue/ failsafe function. Nothing extra you need to do it will just land on its own either way.
Best video on how to setup gps and test it. I just didn’t understood why do you need to setup a failsafe and a gps rescue switch on the controller, can you put only failsafe or only gps rescue? Thanks
Yes you can put just GPS Rescue on a switch. The reason I put both Failsafe and GPS rescue on a switch was to demonstrate the different ways to test GPS Rescue. you can test it using GPS on a switch, Failsafe on a switch and also a radio shut down if you want. Once everything is working after you tested it. You would just have GPS Rescue on a switch and you would remove the failsafe switch.
So do we share the bepper pad with the GPG, I think those are the same pads, I am a newbie I have build 2 drone and those were following a youtube page, learnt a lot, but still learning.
when you plugged the fc to your powerbank for searching satelites, have you removed power from powerbank before plugging in the lipo? i'm afraid of burning it by plugging in both power sources.
After searching for enough satellites through the USB connection, you can disconnect the USB connection and then plug in the battery. If your GPS is not interfered with, you can search for many satellites in 1-2 seconds after plugging in the battery.
Either way, I usually unplug the power bank then plug in the lipo. But you can have both plugged in at the same time it wont hurt anything. if you unplug the power bank and then plug in your lipo you will get all your sats back within about 1 second.
I put my gps on top. Build a gopro holder that is tilted the way you want with a gps holder on it. Set at an angle or flat. The go pro light back with very small gps works. In you don’t use a GoPro put your gps there. Than you don’t need to work about it getting interference you don’t realize the space exist with how small gps is now.

26:50 ground speed is not affected by wind, if the quad faces a headwind it will throttle up until target ground speed is reached
yes as long as your angle limit is not too low. needs to be able to pitch over far enough to achieve the set speed.
One time I did let him auto landing but this was just a drop from about 10meters, good this was on the high grass and nothing broken.🤣
Still it doing job to RTH and than I can fly or land myself, but.....need more improvement.
In a real situation you would almost always take back control. keep testing it and let me know what happens.
great video my dude :)
Thanks !
Hello! Great video, gonna try these settings! Btw what kind of backpack are you got here?

Great help ❤
Glad it helped!
@@andrewmedia3568Alright, thank you so much man you really did the best gps rescue tutorial out there
So do we share the bepper pad with the GPG, I think those are the same pads, I am a newbie I have build 2 drone and those were following a youtube page, learnt a lot, but still learning.
No. Most fcs will have a different set of pads for beeper.
Therell be a + and - and sense wires.
when you plugged the fc to your powerbank for searching satelites, have you removed power from powerbank before plugging in the lipo? i'm afraid of burning it by plugging in both power sources.
I use a gps mate from hglrc it works pretty good for just powering up the gps also has a beeper
Merci beaucoup!!👌
I put my gps on top. Build a gopro holder that is tilted the way you want with a gps holder on it. Set at an angle or flat. The go pro light back with very small gps works. In you don’t use a GoPro put your gps there. Than you don’t need to work about it getting interference you don’t realize the space exist with how small gps is now.
I put the GPS on the arm away from the AU and antenna. 3D print a holder to attach to any arm works great
