Anjelica Huston kills every role. An underrated actress imo. Never thought I’d hate her in a movie but she was so spot-on in this role. She and Drew Barrymore were wonderful.
That scene between them in the bedroom! You *see* the step-mother's pain over her husband's death. She really loved him, and takes out her grief on his daughter, bc she looks like him, and bc he looked to Danielle last before he died. AH is able to show the pain so you sympathize, but still make you hate her!

The historical references in this movie are wonderful. The scene in 17:00 references the very well-known legend of The Women of Weinsberg. In 1140, when King Conrad III defeated the Duke of Welf and placed Weinsberg under siege, the wives of the men in the besieged castle negotiated a surrender which granted them the right to leave with whatever they could carry on their shoulders, with the permission of the king. Leaving everything else aside, each woman took her own husband on her shoulders and carried him out. When the king's people saw what was happening, many of them said that that was not what had been meant and wanted to put a stop to it. But the king laughed and accepted the women's trick. "A king" he said, "should always stand by his word." I saw this movie for the first time in my 30s. The historical references and many other things, such as the production value and the beautiful storytelling, make this one of my most appreciated movies.
The first time I heard that line, "I shall go down in history as the man who opened a door", It was one of those lines that hit just right. I howled with laughter for a good five minutes. Luckily I was at home.
It truly is an incredible version of the Cinderella story - it humanizes the story in a way that makes it more endearing and powerful. Anjelica Huston is the ultimate badass in everything she does.
I love how they allowed the younger stepsister to have such a good heart, and actually help Danielle, and is then rewarded herself, by being able to have the Prince's main officer as her husband, because they're obviously the perfect match for each other, as you see in this movie. Most of the other versions keep both step sisters being just as evil as their mother, so this version is a wonderful twist with having one stepsister as a good person who helps Danielle as much as she can, so is rewarded by the Royal Family. Also... some of the earlier versions of the fairy tale are quite brutal as to what happens to the stepmother and sisters, just as some of the earlier versions of most of the other fairy tales people think are so adorable now.....the endings for the wrong-doers weren't that nice. Even some of the good guys who try to help the main characters, can have some terrible things happen to them. We have to remember how brutal things were in the medieval settings in which most of these fairy tales were first created.
I love how you noticed her strength as a character where the other Cinderellas were more fanciful dreamers she was more realistic of her place in life and you went from being confused to Drew's casting to her being the best choice.
It's amazing, all the evil stepmother wanted was to be the mother of the future princess. What she wanted was something she was already destined to have, but she loses it because she had no love in her.
I love this movie so much 💕 as for the father at the beginning: the pain/numbness in his left arm was a symptom of a heart attack which happened very quickly after, the stepmother didn't do a thing to him, she was genuinely upset he died right after their wedding, leaving her there alone. And she was also holding a grudge against Danielle for a long time, because the last thing the father did was look at her and say goodbye to her, not to the baroness. It wasn't the only thing that caused her to treat Danielle poorly, of course, but it added to it.

You’re right, many variations of the ‘Ash Maiden’ stories have her as esteemed birth; one even has her already be a Princess. The really interesting thing is that it isn’t always a stepmother who mistreats the Maiden, in some it’s her older sisters, her father, or a stepfather. One line in Ever After even mentions that Danielle isn’t exactly a commoner like she and her stepfamily refers to her as- her father Auguste is called ‘Monsieur le Seigneur’ (a Seigneur is basically the French equivalent of a Lord). It means that while Danielle isn’t an Aristocrat, like Rodmilla and co call themselves, she’s still a feudal Lady (or Seigneuresse).
It's actually really cute that you watched this one. Most guys won't have anything to do with it, but it's a legit good movie! I'm also extremely biased because my name is Danielle😍
I saw this movie in theater. Wonderful film. As it turns out, Francis I and Henry II were my thirteenth and twelfth great grandfathers. My mother’s father (my grandfather) Clarence was a direct male-line descendant. They went from France, to England, then ended up in what would become the state of New Jersey in the United States of America. My family even founded a town here called Cream Ridge. It was cool to see my distant ancestors in a fairytale.
The father's death is implied to be a heart attack. A tingling/strange feeling in the left hand/arm is a common sign of heart attack in men. It is also implied that the beginning of the step mother's hatred of Danielle was because the father's last moments and last words were devoted to his daughter, not his wife.
As a french girl, I was happy to see how well they showed the life in the court of France. Also, I have a fun fact for you (only a french can notice it) : when Henry spoke to the princess Gabriella, he called her " Madame " but in France, only married women could be called like that, so it means he considered her as married.

This is my fav movie. I have it in VHS, DVD, bought it in RUclips, and now have it in Disney +. I love that the prince came to save her and she had liberated herself.
Haha yes! My sister recorded it on VHS when it was on telly, probably in 2000 or 2001. It was my favourite movie as a kid and I watched it to death, every time I watch it now I can still remember where the ad breaks were.

Such a great movie - it's beautifully written and for our current films looking to depict women empowering themselves, not once in this 1998 movie does Danielle get saved by the male, it's a true female empowerment movie. Love the way it's shot too, all real locations, no CGI backdrops.
Great reaction! I was hoping to find a reaction from a man of one of my FAVORITE movies. I love the line from Da Vinci about opening the door, but also the line from Henry when Danielle tells him that he knows her weakness but she has no idea what his is. I melted when he told her, "I should think that it is obvious".
What's hilarious is the step mother and daughter might have actually done quite well for themselves in "the Americas" once they adjusted. There were plenty of fortunes to be made. Instead they're stuck as servants XD

I was pretty young when this came out but when I only loved Die Hard and Rambo, this was the first film I learn to appreciate for it's dialogue alone. Not sure if it holds up but I loved the writing.

This is the 2nd best version of this story. I like how they take the angle of making it historically accurate and realistic. Plus everyone in it is great.

Please check out "Snow White a Tale of Terror "🍎 it's got a fantastic cast. And is told in a similar way. More realistic. And Snow White is also a really strong female character.

This was a beautiful movie but without the fairy and the magic it just feels like something is missing. Like if you took away the magic from Harry Potter what would be left?
The thing with the hand, numbness in the right hand and arm is a symptom of a heart attack. They're implying that the baroness poisoned him at breakfast.
Left arm and hand for a heart attack, and that's where the pain was. It's common knowledge, look it up please. She didn't poison him, and was just as upset as Danielle.
That small conversation that the stepmother and Cinderella have with each other at the fireplace, that whole conversation was not exactly meant to be rude but just a realization of what she had to go through and why he the stepmother‘s acting this way. So the fact that you missed the whole point of that conversation is beyond me
And she was trying not to admit that she missed Danielle's father, by saying she hadn't known him that long....but she did miss him, and hated the situation he left her in when he died. She had a lot of resentment, and was trying to escape by having her eldest daughter marry the prince. She didn't realize that Danielle would have treated them all well, if she had been allowed to simply marry him herself. She believed Danielle would mistreat them after the way they had treated her. I like to believe that Danielle eventually allowed the stepmother and the stepsister to be released to live in a cottage somewhere near the castle, once they had learned their lessons. There's an earlier version that stated that's what happened to them after a time of being punished, and that they had to rely on charity coming from Cinderella and the Prince, so they would never forget their now lower station in society. I love that the younger stepsister was rewarded for helping Danielle, and got to marry her own sweetheart from the Prince's royal guard....who was his highest officer in the guard.
@@janicem9225 according to one version of the original tale, the youngest stepsisters isn't as bad as her mother and sister. And in another version, when the stepsisters recongnized Cinderella at the end, they begged her for forgiveness. Cinderella accepts and help them to find a husband
To be fair, most people do miss the entire point of that conversation, same as the beginning when the father dies. They all think the Stepmother was to blame. At least all of the reactors Ive seen react to this movie

I watched this movie hundreds of times with my mom growing up. It's still one of my favorite Cinderella adaptations and I cry every time.

Maybe it's because I'm old. But. They laid out obvious symptoms of a sudden heart attack. I actually prefer movies that don't spoon feed their audience. Movies that require engagement. Active listening, & observation.

That small conversation that the stepmother and Cinderella have with each other at the fireplace, that whole conversation was not exactly meant to be rude but just a realization of what she had to go through and why he the stepmother‘s acting this way. So the fact that you missed the whole point of that conversation is beyond me

And she was trying not to admit that she missed Danielle's father, by saying she hadn't known him that long....but she did miss him, and hated the situation he left her in when he died.
She had a lot of resentment, and was trying to escape by having her eldest daughter marry the prince.
She didn't realize that Danielle would have treated them all well, if she had been allowed to simply marry him herself.
She believed Danielle would mistreat them after the way they had treated her.
I like to believe that Danielle eventually allowed the stepmother and the stepsister to be released to live in a cottage somewhere near the castle, once they had learned their lessons.
There's an earlier version that stated that's what happened to them after a time of being punished, and that they had to rely on charity coming from Cinderella and the Prince, so they would never forget their now lower station in society.
I love that the younger stepsister was rewarded for helping Danielle, and got to marry her own sweetheart from the Prince's royal guard....who was his highest officer in the guard.
@@janicem9225 according to one version of the original tale, the youngest stepsisters isn't as bad as her mother and sister. And in another version, when the stepsisters recongnized Cinderella at the end, they begged her for forgiveness. Cinderella accepts and help them to find a husband
To be fair, most people do miss the entire point of that conversation, same as the beginning when the father dies. They all think the Stepmother was to blame. At least all of the reactors Ive seen react to this movie
