Salo (fat) is eaten cold on a cracker or added to cereal for juiciness. It has the ability to warm and retain heat in the body during cold times, especially in winter. There was also powdered milk in a separate bag for coffee, which you did not use))) It is interesting to watch your videos, keep up the good work. Best wishes from Russia!
@@MeAncient basically, it has 2 variations. The red-packed one and the white-packed one. The white was not really liked by soldiers back in my service times, hehe. The red one is truly delicious and it is more like bacon. And it was cooked almost like you'd do with bacon. I used to mix the "melted" fat with those really dry rice/buckwheat packs and it gave it a really decent taste. Unfortunately, it seems like those red-packed packs are no longer in our MREs.

From what I've learned, the fat is eaten in cold regions, like Siberia, to give much needed fat calories. Also it can be used to cook with, lip and skin balm, weapon oil, candle, etc.; it's very versatile. Good luck and God bless.
Salo is a very interesting food. Salo is eating cold. Salo can be salted and smoked. Salo is used as a substitute for sunflower oil when cooking. Shpik (salo in army) can be fat or meet jelly. Maybe i didn't tell you everything. I very bad speak English 😅. With love from Russia 🇷🇺

Greetings from Russia and thanks for the interesting video. I don’t know why the RUclips recommendations gave me this video, but I’m glad I watched it. It was interesting the opinion of an adult and an accomplished person on our army rations. The places shown in the video are very similar to those where I myself live, as if I went fishing with my dad. Good health and long years to you.
Goulash, or as we call it in Hungary (it's origin) gulyás comes from the word "gulya", which means a herd of cows, and "gulyás" is the guy taking care of them. So a gulyás soup is literally "cowboy soup". It's made of cow meat and anything nice the cowboy had access to nearby or could take with him to the field, potatoes, carrots, powdered red paprika, onions, sometimes red beans, and so on. Most importantly it has all the nutrients someone working on the fields would need. I've tried a Russian MRE before, it had different main meals in it as I remember, no fat, and was still 3700 kcal. An average light physical worker needs 2000-2500 a day.
Many military day rations have significantly more calories than the average person would need, since soldiers are generally using quite a lot of energy. Soldiers aren't eating rations when they're at their bases or camps, they would eat these rations out in the field. You really want to make sure your soldiers are getting enough energy. Especially in colder climates, as even maintaining your body temperature at lower temperatures consumes a lot of energy.
@@joost1120 Back in my army days when we went out to the fields to "play" we got a lot more and more dense food as well, for that very reason. And oh dear we needed it! Russian cold climate MRE has 5,000-5,400 calories.
So I think this is what you said...... Apple jam is good to mix with cheese, and bacon should have been added to chicken with rice :) But everything comes with experience;)". I will try that next time. TFW!
Please don’t stop making these videos, you’re so talented and I love the whole nature and loot of it. I’m currently sick so this is so enjoyable to watch and I love how you pray before every meal. Love you guys keep up the work!
The last dish you asked about has a lot of uses. often just don't eat it. only with great hunger or if you need to get a lot of calories. it is used for frying. such as fried potatoes or porridge in a cauldron. its fat can also be used to light wet firewood. they can temporarily seal the seams of leaking shoes. you can make a lamp out of it by oiling a rag. also at very low temperatures, if a soldier does not have special means, it can be used to protect the skin from frostbite. also from it, as they say, you can make bait for animals or fish. so it's not food. rather a strategic product for a lot of target crushing. there is also an army joke. that if you are at war with Muslims, cartridges must be coated with lard.
Lard in Russian MRE is not really for cooking anything. Its a cracker topping on its own, and you not suppose to heat it :) Man, crackers with a layer of lard and hot sweet tea helped me a lot during my conscription year back in the days. The combination of fatty and sweet taste with hot tea on a frosty winter day is a miracle
I am Russian. Your video was my recommendation, it's great to see that you like our food. It's amusing to me to see that you decided to reheat the pâté.😄
As a person who does camping from time to time, I can tell you: the MREs are very fat for a reason. In summer, it may not be so apparent, but if you are actively moving outdoors in late autumn and in winter, high fat content is awsome!
i'm an MRE lover, and Russian 24 hr ration is absolutely packed, so there's a time I bringed one Russian 24hr and a pack of menu 7 to Ben Lomond for camping for a night. We ended up stayed there for about 3 days because unexpected bad weather. And that's when I realize how overloaded Russian MRE is for '24 hours'. Cause I've been eating just that for 3 days. And when we about to drive home the last day I still have one more tincan left(the apple thingy)and haven't even touch the pack of menu 7 yet (tbh I don't really want to anyway). It's a fantastic choice to go hunting.
Russian 24 hr combat ration is for solders fighting in winter trhanches, they need mush more energy. For solders in barraks there is a "daily 24 hr ration" it is more adecuate for usual people`.
Oh, I want to say that our country has a rather cold climate. In northern countries, people consume more food to get enough energy. And when you are a soldier, in fact, this MRE seems insufficient. At least that's what my friends who served in the army said.
Nothing more American than being a Marine, on a boat afloat, eating a Ruskie MRE and putting it up on YT. Gotta love the blessing before too. Kudos and TY for serving!
A tip for the chicken and rice and most other food from stove heated Russian/polish food: Always stir them before and during the heating process, it'll get everything heated well that way and make it all soften up if it's a bit solid. It comes from my grandma, who still works in the military. She said this to me when she sent me a Polish MRE a few years ago. Really enjoying the content by the way, keep up the good work!

This reached the point of self-irony in a humorous form, so that it is no longer clear that this is a joke. I will give a hint, Rice is too dense and it is first immediately cut and heated for a long time stirring. Also, the stew is often eaten without reheating, but this is really the most delicious dish. Processed cheese we really have another one it is called - cream cheese. No one eats bacon))) sometimes it is used instead of oil to fry, but if you melt the fat and fry to squalls then it turns out a cool snack) I was very surprised when you salted the food, to our taste it is often oversalted) / Так же мы не очень любим наши галеты, а американский крейкер нам очень нравится)) /Also, we do not really like our biscuits, and we really like the American cracker ))
Just spread liquid bacon on a cracker, add some salt on top of it and enjoy. Do not heat it up. It should be eaten as it is . Another option is to mix it together with the beef, and heat it up. That would bring you even more juicy flavor. Plus you may add it to the rice, to make it less firm while heating it. Thank you very much for your videos. And hi from Ukraine :)
It is very nice to see a person who knows the price of every crumb of food. Who is so careful about eating food. A huge life experience is immediately felt. Thank you for the review, maybe I'll try this MRE in the future!
Great video! As a Russian I am really happy to see that you liked the MRE. You made a few interesting choices lol, but it's all good. Also as a U.S. citizen, Thank you for your service!
As a Russian, granted I haven't served, but I did ate a couple of those 24h MREs with my dad for the fun, the only use for the shpik we found was when re-heating that brick of rice with chicken for some moisture, extra flavour, and crispiness. Tried the shpik with vodka - bad idea, really poor substiture for proper salo. Fried some eggs on it - worked perfectly fine as intended. On pate and jams, meat and jams - yeah, that is a thing, but I think more European. For example Swedish meatballs with lingonberry jam(RIP IKEA, you will be missed), like the one Heinz makes (still not in the same league as IKEA one), maybe some grilled meat/steak with a more tart/savoury jams, like cranberry. Anyway, another great video! Live long and prosper.
@@Spitzel42 maybe not exactly tradition (though IKEA is part of tradition now), but teriyaki is not sweet, it's sharp, and only have a bit of sugar, other ingredients are soy sauce, mirin, and sake, while jams are berries or fruits boiled in a ton of sugar.

Hello from Russia. I really enjoy your videos, especially this one. Beautiful background, calm voice giving it chill vibe. Wish I was there with you guys, enjoying nature and food!
Hey me ancient! i’ve been watching ace for so so long literally every video and i just wanted to say i also love your channel and most importantly thank you for your service in the Military! I appreciate everything you’ve done for all of us and please keep bringing new videos! you guys inspired me to make my own channel!! Much love from Northern Pennsylvania
Never heard of using jam with pate and I'm from Europe. Especially since jam would be way too sweet with the amount of sugar in it. I can imagine it with something more sweet/sour/zesty like cranberry or cowberry preserves. Just like you use them on ham, fine cheese etc. Edit: Regarding lard - it's what it's this one seems like a plain lard. It's not that popular anymore here in Poland but you can still buy it usually more fancier with added onions, apple and or roux. Most common use would be as a spread on bread or frying if you don't mind cholesterol. My grandpa used to make it with fired onions and roux. Spread on bread, add some extras like salt, pepper soured pickle or regular pickle and you have a great snack to drink alcohol with or if you need quick intake of carbs and calories for heavy work.
Dat "bacon" is our traditional food "Шпик" (shpik) or pig's "Сало" (salo), common in all eastern Europ, mostly in Ru, Blr and Ua. it's baisicly salted pig fat. In MRE it servse multiple purpose - long lasting callories for cold weather, for cooking, and also it can be used as lubricant for mostly any military equipmant, as fuel, anty-frostbite cream, e.t.c.... The only problem with it is that being "canned" it is far from original taste and texture, thus it is, probably, the most disgusting part of the meal
Does that mean that I said it correctly or that the commenter said it correctly? I should have opened it first and used it in other dishes, I think. Would have also been good to use to cook fish in if I was going to eat me fish I caught as well. TFW, Vlad! :-)

Greetings, been watching Ace's videos for quite some time since me and my dad are fishing together quite often. Then went on MRE vids binge and youtube recommendations showed me this. Glad to see you liked that MRE, back when I was conscripted 2 years ago we sometimes ate those exact MREs and to be fair they were godsend compared to what they feed you in barracks :D Just a tip, when heating mains, constantly stir them, that way it'll be way more delicious. Thank you for the video, God bless you and your family.
5:28 in russia, mostly, we dont warm pate (if it not freezed), we just put it on crackers an eat it with tea. And it's so hard to warm food on pellets and not burn it :D. And in russia we call it not MRE, we call it 24-hour food supply
About matches. You have to fire a one, make sure there is an open fire on it and then left it on the top of the fuel. About the heater, you've used it wrong for second and third time. You always have to place it on the short supports and use the long supports to place the meals on. As you did in the end. For heating: you have to slightli open one corner of the pack, like you did on very first one but leaving a smaller hole just to make the steam come out. In that way all fats contained in the pack will melt down and make the meal more liquind and hot.
The vegetable spread is called courgette caviar in Russian. It is a must in the everyday life. People do it at home and store it in glass jars and eat it with bread during tea-brakes and breakfast and stuff. It's something that is insanely typical. Also the lard you just spread it on bread like you would pate - cold. Russians love their lard in general.
That was a great watch! I loved the shots of the lake and surrounding areas, what a beautiful place. Learning the history of the lake was very interesting. That 24hr ration was so large! All of it looked really great apart from the lard/fat I think I would have passed on that, but I bet if you are in Russia in the cold that allotment of fat would have been gratefully eaten. That was a really great vid again! :)

So so many uses for that lard apart from eating it. I love how calm you guys were when the fire tipped, best way to deal with things. Great video guys and that fish was a beauty!
Love it! I grew up backpacking with pellet stoves that could fit in your pocket. I gave my old one to my granddaughter & bought a new one, although the new ones aren't made nearly as well. Old ones were aluminum, new ones are painted steel and they rust. I've cooked many meals on those tablets. You can use small sticks in the micro stoves too. Gotta stir it constantly and add a tad of water into the rice so it doesn't burn. I miss those lean bacon bars we used to get at army surplus supply shops in the 1970s. It was simply dried, cooked lean, shredded bacon compressed into a block. It was great with jelly too! Yum! I've gotta try some of the newer MREs and snacks. Yes! Jelly with the right pate is very good. Oh! Try lifting the edge of the tablets with the match and get the match under the tablet. You can also put the tablet on it's edge and you can usually get them lit with a single wind/water proof match or 2 regular matches. Putting a little twig under the tablet helps a lot. Rain isn't friendly, but if you shelter it until lit, then shelter it with your "pan" of food, or a can, it'll keep going until it's burnt out. Thanks for bringing back some awesome memories! That little tablet stove I carried all over America backpacking, when I was a kid and when my kids were young. Good times in the woods! Thank you! And thank you for remembering your prayers! 😊 PS - The tiny micro stoves has to have it's feet flat or it'll fall over like that. The pocket old Boy Scout aluminum tablet stoves that you can fold into it the pellets for packing are the best pellet stoves. They are far more stable and they pack well when they are cool. There are other brands, but the old BSA aluminum ones are great. I think the Army used them too. They have a rectangle base, are about as thick as a deck of cards, and each end folds open to support the pot or food container. Here's a picture of one like my old one... i.pinimg.com/originals/a3/68/95/a3689589beaebb9b73dccc169753eab2.jpg These are the best IMHO.

Lard, also known as fat, or SALO, is a universal thing. You can eat it, add it to a frying pan, lubricate your body in the cold to protect yourself from frostbite, rub your boots to make them less wet, use it instead of dry alcohol, like a candle, or as a small source of fire or heat. Most likely I forgot to say something about the capabilities of this product. By the way, these types of canned food are not considered the best in our country. You are very positive, thank you for the video and good presentation of the material
the as you call it "veggie spread" is actually squash caviar as us Russians call it because well its made of 80% squash and it has some zuchini as well as some eggplant :) (at first i said eggplant caviar before i fixed the comment so sorry on that mistake my english is average since its my second language)
Hey Me Ancient and Asa, great videos guys, really entertaining. When the video first started, and you showed the US military mess kit, I recognized that the knife in the mess kit, was the same knife that I used countless times as a kid growing up on the farm. If I remember correctly, the one I had, was stamped "U.S.A.", I believe. I asked my great uncle Ray, where it came from, since he served in Europe in WW2. He either didn't remember, or for some reason wouldn't tell me it was from his mess kit. It held a very sharp edge, and was absolutely indestructible. I recall trying to sharpen it with a file, and it was hard to sharpen, since the steel was tempered so well. A very good knife. It's nice to finally know where that knife came from. It was my favorite "go to" knife, for pretty much anything. A really enjoyable video guys, keep 'em comin'! God bless.
Darryl, I am going to be looking at that mess kit closer. I had just picked it up before going on the trip with Ace so I didn't really get an opportunity to check it out. I think the knife might hold a good edge. I'll be using that quite a bit to eat from and heat things up in the future, I believe. TFW!
That fat can be mixed with the main dishes to make them not so dry but I never used mine. I will say the beef and buckwheat and the apple jam were two of the better things I've ever eaten. The veggie spread can be added to mains to make them more moist and add flavor. It comes in a couple dif versions. I've ate quite a few Russian rations like the one you have there. I loved it except the smell of that dry fuel is very bad and stays in your nose. It smells like fish fat and chemicals to me. Must be well ventilated

Thank you for the origins of this word!

@@yastyman Welcome! ))

As a person who does camping from time to time, I can tell you: the MREs are very fat for a reason. In summer, it may not be so apparent, but if you are actively moving outdoors in late autumn and in winter, high fat content is awsome!

Tks for the comment. I appreciate you watching.
Here I am, just laying in bed watching some old marine guy eat Russian rations on a boat, and yet I can't stop.
Greetings from Russia!

I have better ideas for the lard for the next video I am able to do with a Russian MRE....TFW!

TFW, Vlad! :-)

This one was special to me. Im very familiar with Russia and other Russian speaking countries. Im able to read the texts on the packages and understand on many parts whats in them. Ive had that tea many times. It's really good. To write it on English in The way it should be pronounced would be something like MISKE. Thanks and God bless.

Must have been a heavenly fishing trip!
Nice Bass! What a beauty! Liked the history of the town👍🏻Glad you were able to recover the beef, nice save. I've seen Russians eat that lard, doesn't look appetizing. As usual I'm late viewing the vid but it's a good one. Thank you Sir!
I appreciate the tips, Faren. Thank you for your insight. TFW!
I think I could easily 'survive' for a longer period on a 24 hour Russian MRE if I had to or wanted to. Hmmmm.....perhaps that's a video for sometime this summer? TFW, Christine!
@@MeAncient That would make a really interesting vid to watch! :)

You and Ace both have such a humble way of presenting your videos. The way you enjoy and appreciate every endeavor you go on is inspiring to me and many others. It really makes me want to get out and try the things i have never done. God bless you all! Cheers! P.S. That is a super nice Smallie you caught there! Ive caught tons of Largemouth but i've never been able to land a smallie ever in my life. There isn't a large smallmouth population in Northern Kentucky waters. I need to get down to the mountains of Tennessee one day!
I’ve just found this channel and I’m amazed at how good of a content this is! I’ve never felt so good about anything American, you guys are the best people! Best wishes from Russia. It’s so funny when you try guessing Russian meal names ahah, also a good English practice too 😅
You both are so wholesome, I’m binge watching all the videos whenever I have a moment. Especially nice is that you explain American local history, it’s very interesting 👍👍
Please keep up the good work and God bless you. Btw your faith makes me wanna reach out to religion more, we are lacking this in our turbulent times. Thank you 🙏
I love when you say some items aren’t very good and then you’re still eating it 5 minutes later! Great video!!
Yeah.....I saw that during the editing process. TFW, Yancey!
Lol
So so many uses for that lard apart from eating it. I love how calm you guys were when the fire tipped, best way to deal with things. Great video guys and that fish was a beauty!
Yes it was! I should have opened the lard on the first day....I would have come up with more uses for it. TFW!
PS - The tiny micro stoves has to have it's feet flat or it'll fall over like that.
Here's a picture of one like my old one...

thanks for this video ☺️ It was interesting to hear your opinion about Russian rations. and I also enjoyed fishing and beautiful nature 👍🏼 nice combo
TFW!
That's awesome. Glad you found out!
This is an alcohol tablet according to the folk "dry alcohol", it is eco-friendly, all products are natural and eco-friendly.
Just found your channel & love it.
Thank you for your service, sir.
I read the comments. Very funny. This is food for survival and maintenance of the body, not for the appreciating gourmet.
