As an Australian I will say Vegemite is an acquired taste out side the country. Best description is the taste is similar to a bullion cube, very salty. Vegemite can be spread as a topping, added to a soup or stew or added to hot water for a drink and jokesters will say it works well as an axle grease or applied to ones head to keep your hair in place in a strong wind. A good video on Australian mre's.

Vegemite is pretty cool, i had some from a friend and i loved using it in soups & stews to add some depth to the dish when outdoors, i also higly advise trying "Vegeta", its basically salt that has been mixed with fine chopped vegetables and the salt took all the flavor & moisture out of them, goes really well with bread & butter and of course in soups & stews, if you wanna switch it up and have the saltyness without the yeast than give it a go👍

Here in South Africa we get both Vegemite and Marmite a yeast extract, Grew up on Marmite but don't like it all that much same as Vegemite, I will only thinly spread it on bread and only time when I loved either was with grated cheese in a sandwich. When I cook then I use a lot of either for bit more flavor in stews soups or even Minced meat (ground beef for the yankees lol).

Aussie here 👋 Watching with my wife. Saw you scoop the vegemite and we both started howling 😆 we knew what was coming! 😳🤣 Cream cracker, lots of the cheese (or butter if you have it) and a TINY bit of Vegemite is the only way to do it mate 👍 would love to see you try it again the way we eat it. Great review! We get these in the RFS when we fight fires for weeks on end too. Have about 10 saved up in my pantry for when SHTF.

The can opener is a FRED - ‘field ration eating device’. I had many from camps with Cadets. So useful. Vegemite is only a fairly thin layer with butter, or can be added to the meals for a savoury punch. We used to add it to our field rations when heating them up. Muesli is usually only made with hot water in the winter, cold water or milk in the other seasons

I would say that none of my mates including myself , ever drink the protien drink or even the sports drinks, and for the Vegemite the best way to eat them is with the cream crackers with the cheese and a little bit of the Vegemite. Being so hot down here, we just put the main meals on the roof of our PMV's (Bushmasters) and the sun will heat them up. Great video hope to see more Aussie content.

Pardon me for being a little long winded explaining why. But I swear by these MREs. I’m a retired Police Sergeant. In 1997 I was in the New South Wales, Australia - also a member of the regional swat team equivalent. Bordering rural and wilderness (rain forest, eucalyptus forest) areas used for growing cannabis crops with occasional armed guards or just crazy off grid people like at Ruby Ridge or doomsday religious cults. I had a bushcraft/field craft dive bag with all our own copywrited pattern digital camo gear. (The local defence force objected to us wearing their pattern camos). Long story short I took the Australian MRE at the time and took the biscuits, tin of cheese and tube of jam and shoved it in a day pack with some gatorades and a camelpak. Never when in the bush without them. Also took a gortex jacket, compass, map, (gps was a bit patchy at times in heavy rain or canopy back then) first aid, knife, lighters, radio batteries. The amazing think although rated for 5 years I still have the unopened packet of biscuits, processed cheese tin and strawberry jam tube on my mantle piece today almost 30 years later, I think they would still be fine to eat too.

Hello there Me Ancient, it’s great to see you doing another video, I’ve missed your stories.
That protein drink definitely looked a bit dodgy! The cream crackers are supposed to be eaten with the cheese. They’ve been around in the UK for at least 100 years and that isn’t an exaggeration! When I was a girl in the 70s, the cream crackers and cheese would appear on the table after your Sunday lunch. Vegemite is yeast extract, Aussies have Vegemite and we Brits have Marmite. The best way to eat it is on hot toast with butter and you only need a very thin layer! It’s said that you will either love it or hate it! (the haters say that if wasps made honey, it would taste like marmite)
    Looking forward to next time😊

Sometimes while hiking i would chop my jerky up and soak it in soup. Or to make soup. Sounds silly but at the end of a long day and especially if its chilly that hot "jerky" broth is welcome.
Adding a bit of vegemite to the broth just makes it taste even better. Another good broth maker thats light to bring hiking is the jerky and a couple squares of kombu seaweed. It adds minerals and nice flavor to a cup of broth while taking up a very tiny amount in your pack.
But i love vegemite. Its one of those things. Either you do or you don't. Good for vitamins and adding salty umami flavors.
I add to grill cheese or mixed one heaping tablespoon to a stick of butter(ratio 1 tablespoon to 1/4 cup butter )and use it to baste on roasted veg and chicken it is phenomenal.
In the US i found it at world market or cheaper on amazon.

Wow, what an amazing review; I love that you tried everything before and after seasoning and experimenting! As many have said, vegemite is an all-round condiment; not only great on toast or crackers with cheese, but also for adding umami depth to any rich or meaty meals, soups, etc. A little goes a very long way!
As for the hard style of jerky, instead of chewing and swallowing immediately, it's best eaten slowly as it rehydrates in your mouth; it's a good long-lasting snack on a hike because it releases so much flavour as you chew. 😁

    Speaking from experience
    1. I have never come across someone adding creamer to the muesli, usually it's mixed with the protein powder. That is a unique take on them muesli.
    2. You usually mix the soup and the mashed potato together. That produces a really nice filling and flavourful meal
    3. Steak bars are GOLD.
    4. Jam biscuits are often known as "fuck off" biscuits depending on the shape of the centre. If it's a heart you share it, if it is a circle you don't.
    5. The cheese clogs you up.

Vegemite is a thick, dark brown Australian food spread made from leftover brewers' yeast extract first sold in stores on 25 October 1923, it was first sold as competition for Marmite and was call Pawill, i.e. Ma might but Pa will. The yeast is leftover from brewing Victoria Bitter Beer and only VB. Hot buttered toast with a little bit of Vegimite is yummy, or Vitawheat biscuits (read crackers) with butter and Vegimite. Also a source of vitamin B1.

Vegemite is almost identical to British Marmite which has the reputation that either you love it or you hate it, no one has a lukewarm opinion on it (there’s even people who dissolve a similar product in hot water and drink it, which is just strange)

I add a tablespoon of vegemite when I make my home made beef bone broth. I don’t like beef, but my family love it and love it with the vegemite and now request it. I first made it when an elderly relative with oral cancer was going through radiation and his mouth was all cut up and he lost his taste buds and when that happens (can attest from personal experience as I was a 2 time teenage cancer survivor and lost all my tastebuds when I had my stem cell transplant) sweet stuff does not taste all that nice and the only thing that really has any okay flavour is salty stuff. So he had also lost all but about 5 teeth to the cancer and couldn’t wear his dentures because of the sores and his mouth so scared he can only open it the width of 1 finger so he can only eat liquids, he was craving both beef and vegemite so I made him a beef bone broth and added a heaped tablespoon of vegemite and he loved it and it made him so happy, he often requests it when I ask him if I can do some cooking for him.

Vegemite is spread on toasted bread with butter spread first so it melts into the bread and the lightly spead the vegimite. Most people put too much vigimite on. Trust me when you get it right it is very pleasing to the palet. Its also very good to spread over a chicken roast. Marinate over night and slow roated. The skin is to die for. Try it.
