- For the first time ever, I got my hands on a Chinese MRE! I have plenty of USA MREs of course, so prepare for a showdown between China and USA MREs!

1150 calories and 250 of them are from the bag of skittles.
That leaves 900 calories that aren't and that is still a lot more than the chinese one. The chinese learned that they f'd up and are changing their MREs. GTFO with your america is bad nonsense.
You're brave for doing a Chinese ration after one almost took out Steve!
I hadn't heard that........TFW
Probably something that affects the calorie count is that I would assume the average Chinese soldier has a lighter body mass (shorter). Personally I would prefer the Chinese MRE as the amount of sugar in the US one would inflate the calorie count and be not as sustaining between meals. While the quail eggs, pickle, rice, chicken, beef, soup would have a higher protein content and therefore higher nutritional value and staving off hunger between next meal.
The only thing I preferred on the US MRE is the choice of drink and coffee and gum!! .... but hey, I wasn't raised on the US 'peanut butter and jelly'... I MUCH prefer the Chinese MRE options :)
Great video as usual :)
Have you had the chinese options? No? Then why do you prefer them? You probably haven't even had the things that came in the chinese MRE and you chose that because you don't think for yourself and you are virtue signaling according to what you have been propagandized to do. Terrible comment as usual.
@@thomgizzizWhat the hell are you talking about? Did you ignore the facts and difference between sugar and protein? That's not propaganda those are facts. The rest and my preference is based on my opinion.
What do you mean terrible comment 'as usual'? I don't know you, and I have never interacted with you before. Take a chill pill there chief!
Fortune cooking were invented in the US, if i am not mistaken. No real Chinese person would expect a fortune cookie in a Chinese meal.
Jerome, you have shattered a childhood idea. Thanks a lot, man! TFW
"...Fortune cookies are often served as a dessert in Chinese restaurants in the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries, but they are not Chinese in origin. The exact origin of fortune cookies is unclear, though various immigrant groups in California claim to have popularized them in the early 20th century. They most likely originated from cookies made by Japanese immigrants to the United States in the late 19th or early 20th century. The Japanese version did not have the Chinese lucky numbers and were eaten with tea...
...As far back as the 19th century, a cookie very similar in appearance to the modern fortune cookie was made in Kyoto, Japan, and there is a Japanese temple tradition of random fortunes, called omikuji. The Japanese version of the cookie differs in several ways: they are a little bit larger; are made of darker dough; and their batter contains sesame and miso rather than vanilla and butter. They contain a fortune; however, the small slip of paper was wedged into the bend of the cookie rather than placed inside the hollow portion. This kind of cookie is called tsujiura senbei (辻占煎餅) and is still sold in some regions of Japan..."
The egg and tomato cube is actually freeze dried soup. It's a watery type of soup, so you'll need to add it into 120-150ml of hot water for a minute.
I could have used that advice before I put that together, for sure. Thanks for hanging out and the suggestions. TFW
The USA meal has lots of sugar for energy
Energy is just what you need when you're working hard. Too much sugar not good, but I'd rather have too many calories and be judicious than be working and wishing I had something more to eat. TFW
@@MeAncient I agree 100% I was a M1A2 sep 3/8 calvery ft hood tx tank commander you would be suprised on how much you sweat and work during the summer and hot climates.
That chinese mre is more like pogey bait or a snack., when your on the tan bag take out you need those calories to replenish your body. During gunnery I use to get extra Mre for my loader because he was a real work horse gotta love the good ole days
Your funny fortune cookies were invented in San Francisco so they’re not even Chinese they’re American funny huh?
Good afternoon! I love just chilling and watching these fun videos and listening to your stories from when you were serving! Keep it up!
The beef, the spicy sauce, the pickle, and eggs all get mixed into the main on the chinese mre.
The American MRE seems heavy with sugar, hence more calories. Good for a quick energy boost. The Chinese MRE seems more hearty and substantial, savory vs sweet.
It is literally not hearty or substantial. It literally doesn't have enough calories to get somebody doing physical work through the day.
Yes, I like your reviews Sir and your adventures are amazing tbh good to see you two together. (Ace videos)
Do we know that the Chinese only get three of these a day and that's it? What if they get additional snacks and whatever on the side to supplement their mealtimes? What if they get four of these?
From a food quality and macro perspective per calorie, I'm siding with the Chinese MRE here. It's not all overly processed carb sources beyond recognition from its raw form, be it sugar or flour. Skittles and sugary jams isn't exactly my idea of food for a soldier. Why not add a few spoons of animal fats and some protein to the main instead? It takes up less space and has a lot more calories and nutritious quality to it. Lard, duck fat and butter needn't be too expensive either. 🤷🏻
Totally agree with you on all points.
They both looked pretty tasty. I noticed no matches in the accessory package. Maybe to discourage smoking? I always ate peanut butter and banana together. Thanks
I’m pretty sure anything you buy from the store on a military installation is tax-free, so cigarettes and matches are probably cheap enough for them to justify leaving them out in an economic sense. It still doesn’t make practical sense to me since matches are infinitely useful in a survival situation.
Thank you so much for all the quality content you put out! I hope you know how much joy you bring to people. I’m an attorney that volunteers my spare time helping vets appeal VA benefit denials/discharge upgrades and sooo many of my clients watch your videos. You’d be surprised how well watching MRE testing videos has allowed me to build common ground and trust with my clients as someone who has never served. I stared watching after a client started talking about them and you are my favorite channel for this type of content.
Thank you again!
You are very kind to say such things, Amanda. Thank you for your volunteer work with Veterans. TFW!
When I was active duty in the US Army we never used the hot beverage bag. i dont think anyone does, least not that i ever seen.
also when you are on the move. you dont have time for it. i used to eat the milkshake powder mix plain like sugar candy as i marched. you dont have the water to mix it or the time, and you sure as heck dont want to put sticky stuff in your flask it will mess it up
Thank you for confirming my thoughts on the matter. And TFW!
Chinese mre looks good
And keep up the good work
The American MRE is full of sugar.
Pickled cucumber is an appetizer.
thank you for another banger, your always fun and entertaining to watch....as always take care brother ✌
You are very kind. TFW!
Awesome video today man
I think the Chinese one is supposed to be mixed all together as a complete meal not individual hence the reason you only got one container for eating out of😊
Correct. Ofcourse it is supposed to be a complete indo-chinese rice dish. Nasi Goreng, Babi Pangang and Atjar
No, no it isn't. The only thing that would be mixed in is the chili crisp. You should stop thinking. That isn't how things are done there. There is a main that will go with the rice and the rest are side dishes. Why are there a bunch of people that know nothing about china or chinese food pretending like they know what is going on?
Gee buddy chill out I didn't know it was a punishable offense you need to tone down the nastiness a little bit it's not that big a deal. :-) :-)
@@thomgizziz
Why are you so mean to everyone?
Love your videos. Try having an extra spoon before you start so your friend can sample along with you.
The Chinese one was toddler sized.
Not enough, for sure. It was good, though. TFW, Rose.
should have paired the chinese MRE with rice. Asian foods are always paired with rice to compensate the strong flavor. try it and it’ll take you to the next level of flavor.
Next one we should be able to do a little better with the pairing items together. Stay tuned......TFW
Hey Me Ancient! Always love your videos 😊 I actually already watched this one, but I came back to make a suggestion. It seems like you are often on the move, visiting cool places - I’d love to watch some videos of you getting random things from the Army Surplus stores in various areas you already travel to. You could even visit several places and collect cool things, then come share them and their histories with us 😊
Keep it us as always! ❤
I'd take the Chinese one at least it looks like real food. Three boiled eggs, egg soup, topped rice, spicy sauce. Sounds like something I'd Uber. No contest the Chinese wins for me in this. The sugar on that US MRE laid out on that tray is so unappealing to me. Sure it has more calories but its from sugar so that means it will dissipate faster from the body. Also why they are giving troops food like they are little kids? That won't fill me up then probably go on a glycemic crash from all the sugar. Utter disrespect.
The Chinese MRE was really tasty. However, there are not enough calories to stay active as required in the field at the body weight and overall size of US troops. That may be the big difference......Chinese troops may be smaller in stature so they don't need as many calories per day. I do agree about the quality of food in the US MRE as being lots of sugar, but that is what most Americans eat and therefore what they want in their MREs. TFW, Jalide.
What kind of nonsense is this? Do you go around attempting to virtue signal like this all the time? You are the type of slow mo that will try to self aggrandize because you go to an expensive restaurant and you think it is healthy when you are gobbling down more fats, sugars, salts and calories than you would get at the worst fast food joints and still slow enough to claim that you are healthy. You are a joke.
@@MeAncient Are you sure it was tasty? Or do you have a bit of exoticism going on there? Just because it is different doesn't make it better. I haven't had that menu but I have had chinese MREs before and they aren't good examples of food just like the american ones aren't.
@@thomgizziz I would OBVIOUSLY prefer my wife's cooking or a good restaurant any day. I am comparing and have the mindset of in the field, hungry, and need food to keep me going. The Chinese MRE was quite tasty. If it had more items, it would have won the 'battle.' Hope that helps. TFW
Nice review. Glad you got two good ones.
One tird of USA calories go to Skities, and as we know carbo hidrates doesnt keep U full for to long
That three egs will keep U full much longer then beef or jam or peanut butter.
Stay in school, kid.
The eggs wouldn't quite do the trick for me. Give me beef or peanut butter. I''d eat them when I'm hungry and if that's the best option, but I'd prefer more caloric volume. TFW

The proteins From the eggs need lot of time to be digested, more than meat proteins. For me Best combination in ration eggs and little of bacon or spam
Use your words.
That is a pretty light calorie meal, very interesting though. Another great video and look forward to the next. Super job and awesome camera work.
Maybe less caloric due to Chinese men, for the most part, have a smaller build, and less weight? 👍😎✌🗽
Look up BMI by country. On Wikipedia China is listed as 143rd, but I wouldn’t trust those stats. There are very few overweight people in socialist countries.
I think it’s mostly a mentality of the CCP to provide their soldiers with the bare minimum to survive, but I’m sure average BMI has something to do with it.
@@Sniperboy5551 Looked up average weight, and for a Chinese man it's 153.4. For the American man it's 199.8 which is 46 pounds heavier. If true, that would explain the difference in calories. There's multiple sites listing different numbers, but they're all within a few pounds of one another. Yeah, the CCP is literally insane! They're doing everything in their power it would seem to tick off those who would give them success. To not treat your soldiers like valuable assets is just plain stupid! 👍✌🗽
It's a great day whenever Me Ancient posts! Hope you and the family are doing well!
Tastewise I would go for the Chinese experience. But from what I see here the US ration has more to it and keeps you going a lot more. Also, it has a lot of small things that you can bring with you like gum, skittles and maybe a packet of peanut butter and crackers.
Thanks again for the great video chief!!
Ryan
Well, the Chinese military meals are different than the US military meals is because of Chinese military meals. Don’t like to pair with bread or cheese and stuff like that so that’s why they most likely put rice or other type of rice noodle dishes inside of a MRE sometimes they normally put some beef jerky in it too, but yeah, I have a lot of those international MRE
I love these videos when you compare foreign rations with each other. You have inspired me to maybe do similar content. Unfortunately, I dont have a professional like @Ace to edit, but i will make it due. I'm excited to see your next video, brother. Ma😊y God continue to bless you and your family.
Mr.Jester, I WISH Ace would edit my videos. He films but I edit. That's why there is such a long time between videos.....I take soooooo long to edit these simple, one camera videos. TFW!
@MeAncient I would've thought @Ace would at least help you with it 😆 🤣 😂. You do a great job, brother! What do you use to edit? I really need to take a course on how to do RUclips videos
Love the videos keep up the good work putting smiles on our faces and curing our boredom
Austin, happy to bring a few smiles here and there. TFW!
Me Ancient tasting the Chinese MRE so we wont have to 😂 For real though, enjoyed the video a lot! ONTO THE NEXT ONE!
Another good video Me Ancient! I have a request, try to see if you can get a Brazilian MRE to show us. I would be interested in that. Thanks again, vr, Shannon
you could put both items to heat in bag at the same time....
You have to love the sense of humor, with the take‐out box. Maybe useful as a fire starter also..
Perfect timing!
3500 calories are still on the lower end of what you burn through in the field. China has to up their game.
The hot beverage bag is intended to go into the FRH with the main. I've never been able to get my hot beverages hot enough and usually just save them for another time. I guess if it was cold even a warm beverage would be better than nothing.
The saying " Is an army marches on their stomach" leaves us hanging concerning the Chinese MRE😮.
Someone suggested that perhaps they get more food issued somehow. I haven't seen anything definitive yet in the comment section. TFW, Katherine.
Your surprised positive reactions to the Chinese MRE were entertaining, especially since you didn't know what to expect.
Interesting mre comparison, thanks Me Ancient 🙂
My pleasure! TFW, Srijan!
One I do with the the hot bag is use to put All the stuff from the accessory pack inside the hot bag keep doing the video you a good job thanks you
I lost about 25lbs during my 5 month deployment to Desert Storm. At least 90% of my meals were MRE's. I wasn't fat to begin with (6'5", 210lbs), and I wasn't a combat arms guy so I wasn't running around and clearing trenches, but I was with the 1st ID and we were forward deployed and very active . The fast pace of movement and the preparations and diligence required in a combat zone are extreme. I can't imagine how anyone in that situation could function for very long on a < 2000 calorie diet.
That's interesting. I lost from 205 to 165 in boot camp. I, too, am 6'5". Someone else commented that the Chinese are, on average, quite a bit smaller than US troops in height and weight. So, the smaller caloric MREs might be alright for them.......TFW
Love the videos 👌🏼 educational and fun saludos from Nayarit Mexico and all California 🙌🏼
I'm hoping to visit Mexico one day.......dive for lobster and do me some serious fishing. TFW!
@@MeAncient 👌🏼
Fun video! Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the info! I'll do that on the next ones.....TFW, Christopher.
I think the Chinese MRE is designed where literrally all of it is meant to be placed in the box as a large bento style box or whatever. got to keep in mind the Chinese are smaller and I dont think their gov cares as far as less calories go. Though I do get fighting you are going to burn calories. I know in Iraq I ate 3 MREs most days and lsot weight. Semper Fi!
I think you are right. I have two more Chinese MREs.....stay tuned. TFW, Tyler
Love the content
I could be wrong. I think the egg drop soup goes in a coffee cup w eggs. Everything else goes in rice mix up.
Yes, you are very wrong and you clearly knew you were making stuff up and you still went for it anyway. What is wrong with you?
Lost all respect when you said you don't care for skittles lol but nice video
I don’t like the switching between each MRE, for each item… They should be experienced as a whole meal.
Love the vids. Been watching for ages.
Well done.
I enjoyed the video. Thank you.
Glad to hear it. TFW
Chili garlic sauce can go with ANY meal!
Awesome video. I think I would prefer the one from USA too. Espesially with the Skittles😋
You're a braver man then I Gunga Din, the number of ration reviewers that have got sick eating Chinese stuff....
Thank you for sharing this with me and I hope that you and your family are doing well 🙏💜
Sorry for the dumb question. I've never been in the military. But, what happens if you add too much water to the FRH? 🤔
It stops producing heat because it gets starved of oxygen necessary for the reaction (since it is under water).
@@Annihilator49 Thx for the reply. 🙂
wasn't a fortune cookie an Chinese American invention
yes, it is
If you can get your hands on a Guinean MRE somewhere, it's almost identical to the Chinese package. I just made a video about it on my channel a couple of days ago.
A little bit of trivia about Skittles is that they are all the same flavor, just different colors.
Man like he said that MRE was quite depressing. Still looks good though especially that egg drop soup and I'm not a fan of tomatoes.
That feeling when he doesn't want to drink the Bill's Brew 😞 (I wouldn't want to either, living in that climate)
Jokes aside, Semper Fi!!! Appreciate the hell out of you and Ace!
I like grape jelly with peanut butter because the peanut butter on its own can be too dry.
I'd love to try anything grape flavoured, alas not a thing in the UK
@@parabreed I don't think I'd like peanut butter with any other flavor of jelly. I believe ours are made with Concord grapes. In the USA we have a brand called Goober grape that is peanut butter with jelly in swirls in the same jar...the combination is that common. However i prefer to put them on separately.
I buy Peter Pan which is usually quite creamy and rarely dry. Grape jelly is the best for PBJ. TFW
Oh man, you are missing something there. TFW
@@MeAncient Ah ok. I have usually went with the store brand. I also like slices of banana on peanut butter sandwiches. That adds a little moisture.
Cup noodle soup must be in a cup or mug!
Chinese beef is often water buffalo rather than cow, so that could account for texture differences as well.
aces chubby lil fingers came in outta no where with the quickness for some of those skittles😂
Jason, he's a scamp, for sure. TFW!
I'm thinking maybe mix the whole Chinese one together?
The US MRE is for energy why all the sugar you will need that energy while the Chinese does look more healthy there just isn't no calories or energy. There is no way your hiking 40 miles a day living on that low of calories. Need sugar or carb sugar for energy that's what they have adapted the American body 2 run on.
Indeed. Great observation. TFW
Heck yeah!! Me ancient hope you and the fam are doing well sir. Thank you for the awesome videos. They're great 👍
I live near Ft Campbell Ky back in the 70s we would quail and rabbit hunt there and sometimes we would come across C rations...I would eat the peanut butter but it was kinda nasty
Peetie, no way was P.B. nasty. :-). It was in little green cans, right? You just had to stir it good once you opened it. TFW
Very interesting review sir.
Thank you kindly and TFW
Eating food while watching this incredible vidoe.
That's the way to do it.....TFW
The quail eggs are there for the protein in a meal that has so few calories
Makes sense. TFW
If this is what the Chinese soldiers have to eat during battle they're not going to last long😊
Oh good one❤👍 made my day😊
Chinese have a concept I've never seen before, an entire ration made of parts to complete a whole meal. Separately they meh but together are amazing (omitting the soup) but I think the idea is good, a great moral booster. Yes, the calories are nothing and there no snack or a sugar boost (Peanut butter and a candy a must in my opinion) but otherwise Ingenius. A "homecooked" meal as a ration, great moral boost idea. sure, its low calorie but heck Napoleon quoted that and army marches on its stomach. no lie those quail eggs and the soup I love to try myself
No those are side dishes and you have to carry rice making the meal bigger. That doesn't look home cooked and looks like a nightmare to try and eat during a war. There is a reason why it the US have MREs as in meals READY to eat not meals you have to do a bunch of BS to eat.
Watching the channel for a while like the content a lot never felt the need to comment but damn that Chinese mre is bloody crazy active people made to eat so little 🤯
It would be tough to stay engaged with so little food, if indeed that is what they are issued for a day (times 3) TFW
Hey guys! What a great video. I wonder if the Chinese MRE's for the other two meals in the day, had more calories than the lunch MRE? Perhaps they gave them a light lunch, in case they were on a ruck, or in some type of drilling exercise? This way the soldier wouldn't be too full to continue with his duties, don't know, just a thought. I don't have to wonder if the Skittles were good, LOL!! See ya both next time, God bless.
We'll find out soon......I have two more Chinese MREs.....TFW and stay tuned.
to me it seems like the Chinese MRE is something that you would pretty much eat all in one sitting versus the US MRE you have your main entree, a side and then some snackage to hold you until the next meal time.
After the review I would have mixed the American and chinese together. I think the combo would be fantastic.
Good idea. TFW
I need to try that Chinese MRE is there a type number or something to help us search it? Next time I order Chinese food I'm asking for tomato egg drop soup and braised quail eggs, I mean why not. Thanks for this Vid!
Because they don't sell that... why are you like this?
I think a Chinese soldier would consider it a good meal but to me I would choose the American, starting with the calories and ending in the more pratical use of the meal, with little "parts" I could eat on the go, in the Chinese I guess you could eat the beef and the cucumbers on the go, but it would be a meal to sit down, heat the beef, the rice, water for the soup. Not a question of being good or bad, but just having more calories and more ways to decide how to eat it...
Joao, good points. TFW
You don't heat the beef, it is meant to be eaten cold. You should stop thinking and actually go and learn something. That isn't how things are done there. There is a main that will go with the rice and the rest are side dishes. Why are there a bunch of people that know nothing about china or chinese food pretending like they know what is going on?
@@thomgizziz Thom, interesting comment, "You should stop thinking and actually go and learn something." I believe the later requires the former. Just sayin'. I believe, based on what was in the MRE and what the packaging said once it was translated, that the main WAS the rice with chicken. We opened the MRE from China to compare it with another one. Take it easy, man. Or better still, start publishing your own videos and show us 'bunch of people' how it's done! TFW!
Put your meal in the bag then your hot drink mix in your canteen and then put the bag with the meal in your canteen or any other containers that you can use so you can warm up both at the same time you have to use a little bit of Ingenuity sometimes😊
What do you call that metal plate you're using I want to buy one
If you look up military mess tray or canteen tray you should be able to find something similar
I have snacks bigger than that Chinese MRE and it has no dessert hell just offer them a dessert and they'll probably surrender😅
THX Me Ancient both of them look good !
U did not let that jelly and pb breathe 😂!
I miss when you used to do all the real old ones that were horrible I liked seeing your reaction..you should throw another 1 of those in from time to time
Steve1989MREInfo got food poisoning from an unexpired Chinese ration, it’s safe to say that this is probably one of the more dangerous things our friend Me Ancient here has eaten. I don’t want to lose him! Can’t get enough of his stories.
By this time most if not all edible old mre’s have been eaten and the supply of unopened ones is getting scarce and i haven’t seen any mre’s from the mid 00’s in a while but a few pop up from time to time.
The armed forces need to hire him to taste and approve their MREs for service lol
Shake the drink mix next time. I do believe the package says shake. 😂
Wonder if that was a China breakfast mre. Maybe they are different sizes for different meals. The egg drop soup makes me think it’s breakfast
I don't know....every time I've eaten egg drop soup it's been at lunch or supper in the Asian restaurant. TFW
egg drop soup isn't a breakfast food it is just a soup which is common. So if it makes you think that it is breakfast then clearly you don't know what you are talking about and shouldnt be talking.
That " egg drop soup" looks like my dads mock chicken. Lol
Could not have said it any better myself ! Not enough calories to maintain a professional soldier in the field. The US one looked good to me and I would have been way happy with that. Trade with Ace, skittles ? He seems to like them 😂👍👍👍 great vid, Semper Fi Corporal, keep em coming 🇺🇸🫡🇬🇧🫡
Yeah rather have USA mire pass on China one 😂😂😂😂😂 hope everyone is well ❤❤
I thought both meals looked very tasty even though the Chinese one was less calories. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next.👍
John, the Chinese MRE was definitely good. As you mentioned, just not the calories (I think will be) needed in the field. TFW
