      THAT set the tone for the game. Suddenly, the Leafs had to watch out for the less-obvious names along with Pasta and Marchand and the rest. Whereas, the Bruins only had to focus on guarding the Leafs’ top scorers.

      Amazes me still how many love Tie Domi. As a Leafs fan, yes I appreciated the job he did but I’ll never forgive him for 2001. Plays the best game of his career as a Leaf and then flushes it when he decides to smoke Neidermayer at the end of game 5. Leafs were one win away from the ECF vs Pittsburgh (a series the Leafs would’ve easily been the favourite)
      Jersey looked like a team ripe for the picking until Domi lit a fire under them with his stupid hit. Jersey woke up, easily won the next two games and dummied Pittsburgh in the ECF to play for the Cup.

    I’ve watched the Lightning for a long time. Stamkos has always been one of the hardest working guys on the ice. He was never a PPG player in the playoffs. But he was always part of some of the biggest moments in games. When he takes a slap shot from big Z to the face in 2011 and CAME BACK to finish the game after having his face deconstructed and put back together. In 2020 he came back for one game played two shifts less than 5 minutes and got the FIRST goal of the game. The bench was electric after that, we won the game 5-2 and then the series. Stamkos proved he’s that guy several times leading up to the Bolts’ cup wins. I haven’t see these moments from Matthews, Marner or Tavares.

      I personally never understood it when teams try to match the playstyle of the opponent. Like Boston is a genuine gritty tough team. Toronto isn't but why are you trying to match it instead of working around that/ working to your strenghts. Sure in playoffs you have to crank up a bit of the intensity but either you are gritty or you just aren't. Like skill wise Toronto probably could run circles around the Bruins but they just don't. Hell Bruins don't even have a 1C. And while their D and Goalies are very good the offence (in theory) is lacking and shouldn't be such a big problem for the leafs like it was in this game.

    Neutral fan here. I agree with Steve the leafs didn’t play a terrible hockey game. They were competitive at 5v5 at least the first two periods and they shit the bed on some chances that they definitely should’ve scored.
    But the thing about snot or grit definitely rings true as someone who didn’t watch the leafs that much in regular season and basing my take on just this game. The leafs’ idea of grit seems to be to just take a bunch of penalties which makes you lose the game instantly because, shocker, playoff teams have good power plays.
    Playing with grit is about fighting to turn pucks over and giving good chances and space to your scorers, and that’s really not what the leafs were doing this game.
    Now for a little tangent, Reaves to me is a perfect example of the kind of player that maintains the image of playing with grit but who doesn’t really bring any of those benefits to his team when you look at how he actually plays. But that’s just my subjective opinion as a hater.

    • @plushie946
      @plushie946 12 дней назад +3

      He started the season playing terrible but he had a very good run where his offense was passable, his backcheck was solid and he could lay people out. In this game he landed some solid hits, but that first turnover was terrible. I'm not that worried about him though. He just fills a slot. If he isn't doing anything bad, he's serving his purpose just by being hard to move. If he steps up and actually makes some nice plays he's doing more than is required of him.

    • @rocket_shorts505
      @rocket_shorts505 12 дней назад +1

      Those are some solid points. But I would also say that the Leafs have been terrible on the forecheck and were God-awful in clearing their own zone. The Bruins have all day to move the puck up the ice, and once in the Leafs zone, they have far too much space to set up and tee off. The best Leafs chances were when they were pressuring the Bruins in the Bruins own zone.

    • @Deadpool19917
      @Deadpool19917 12 дней назад +1

      Reaves created 4 different scoring chances by laying hits and causing turnovers. Reaves is literally why the only goal happened at all. The problem is and I have said this all year Keefe doesn't know how to use a true 4th line. That line should be on the ice when pasta is out there or once he got hot Debrusk. The goal of a 4th line is to either shutdown the top line OR make their night physically miserable. But for some reason keefe goes "oh let's do skill vs skill.... that always works."

    I watched the first period of the game, with no dog in the race (go caps) and my impression was that the leafs were "overheating" with the physicality. They didn't throw hits to make a play, they threw hits to throw hits. And that cost them when they allowed the 2 on 1 leading to the first goal. Hope they can do better in the second game and be physical when needed and not just for the sake of it.

You of course can't score more than 1 goal on a single 2-minute powerplay and their models pay 0 mind to the timing or sequence of shot attempts so you end up with extremely goofy results like this where you can be expected to score 4.5 goals in one sequence when the actual true expected value should be less than 1.

The bottom 6 is filled with just hard working guys, they dont put up points but they work hard in the corner and will lay there body on the line every shift no matter what and that’s exactly what will kill a top heavy team like the leafs. Did you notice that Cowan lead London Knights is going 8-0 in the playoffs? Those kids are taking charge in the OHL and Toronto has the main man... I just hope they groom him to be a 2-way because that is who Reilly and Benoit need.
    Looking at the coaching staff, I'd say the hiccough here is Van Ryn, he's the assistant coach charged with teaching defense... while he's not doing a very good job because he is a better offensive defenseman in his merit... He's likely teaching a good offense is better than any defensive trap. Not so against teams like Tampa, Florida, and Boston... who build teams with strong rough big dudes that trap forwards smaller than them. Leafs need to realize this is their broken link in the chain. Variety in defense... the skill is there but the swap from good offense to better defense takes a good 5 seconds for the entire line to change their mindset, trapping Boston's skaters and goal-scorers is better than letting them get pass the blue line.
    The next issue is Swayman... you have a good goalie and defense that knows how to trap, beating Swayman requires that you get cheeky with the dekes and fake shots... get him to commit then take the shot where he was... or aim for a rebound pass. Whatever one is more tricky for that defensive pair. I think that is another problem is that it's not treated as war for this team... know thy enemy!
    The entire Boston club is muscle over finesse in most spots except for the main scoring line. So take advantage of that... how? Put Ryan Reeves onto a top line with Domi and Tavares... two grinder brutes who can pass to Tavares to score while locking out Marchand and Pasta; pair them with Reilly and Edmundson/Lillegren/Giordano (one defense who likes playing 2-way and one defense who likes shooting from the point to rebound it to the wingers). Drop Marner and Matthews onto the third line with Knies, have them be a pocket line for finessing pass the defense. have Kampf, Holmburg, and Jarncrook on the fourth line, Dewar up on the second line with Burt and Robertson... this way the core will have two shifts to rest, and a 2-way forward on each line which is what you want against Mount Boston.

    Hate the bruins but you can't deny their scouting and gm work is some of the best in the league. Even when they lose 2 HOF players they're still the top 3 team in the league.

    Not expecting much in the playoffs as was demonstrated tonight. I was born in 1953. I am looking forward to the start of the season in October and the moves that are made in the summer to make the team capable of winning a Stanley Cup. Does any know if Tavares contract is up July 1st this year? Marner do you sign him before July 1st with a movement clause and trade him or let him walk?

    • @hockeyfan7100
      @hockeyfan7100 12 дней назад

      I believe Tavares has 1 more year. I think you let Marner walk. If he's signed, he'll want more than can be afforded and want a no movement clause. At least if you let him walk, the Leafs will have much more cap space to add better defense.

    • @dsm1984
      @dsm1984 12 дней назад

      Watching tonight those 2 are expendable. Tavares just escapes criticism and Marner is too small for playoffs. Matthews was by far their best player tonight.

    KEYS TO SUCCES:
    - I think Nylander, Marner, and Tavares are paid fairly
    - Sheldon Keefe has proven TIME and TIME again that he is an NHL coach
    - Our defense might be the best in the league? If not number one then number two.
    - Brendan Shanahan deserves all the credit...he deserves a pay increase, this is Shanahan's legacy
    Brendan Shanahan signed April 11, 2014
    2014-15 - Did not Qualify
    2015-16 - Did not Qualify

    2019-20 - Lost in Play-in round Columbus 3-2 (did not make the playoffs)
    2020-21 - Lost in first round Montreal 4-3 (lost to Montreal...they had 11 wins less than Toronto in a 56 game season)
    2021-22 - Lost in first round Tampa 4-3
    2022-23 - Lost in second round Florida 4-1 (almost got swept)

    The Bruins won the goaltending match-up tonight and it wasn't even close. Samsonov looked bad on the second and third goals. He's got to find a way to pick up those shots through screens. If they can't get a better performance in net, this series is going to be over in a hurry.

    • @pomerlain8924
      @pomerlain8924 12 дней назад +1

      To be fair to Samsonov, the guys in front of the net have to move out the Bruins' players that are screening him. It would also help if the Leafs players themselves aren't screening their own goalie out high.
