“Offer the patient water” is my #1 teaching instruction I reiterate to all nursing clinicians I teach, no matter what specialty. I am a board certified psychiatric mental health nurse with tons of education; yet this is my most basic mantra.
I have been struggling through a high conflict post-divorce situation - and was amazed today that drinking water improved how I felt physically, mentally, and emotionally. In about 45 minutes, I felt better and was functioning again. I feel so much better and better equipped to deal with the stress.
I too wish the US had a "Regulation 14." My father had Alzheimer's, didn't feel thirst, was dehydrated, and his kidneys were suffering. I was there for some of his meals and it was a struggle to get him to drink anything. I made fruit-flavored drinks that he liked, filled 8 oz. bottles with them, stored them in his fridge, and literally begged the staff at his facility repeatedly to ensure that he drank them. I kept a count of them. The only time they were consumed was when I was there. They said he didn't want them. When I was there, which was often but not enough, he would take a sip, set the bottle down, and leave it. It wasn't that he didn't want it. He forgot it was there. I had to keep picking it up and holding it out to him for the next swallow until he finished. The staff didn't have time for that. It was so very frustrating.
This is an impressive presentation with a cornucopia of useful information. I just discovered your channel through your talk on Gabapentin, so I am late to the party and will need to play catch-up for awhile. Thank you for committing to these weekly presentations-they are very informative and beyond helpful. As to where I’m coming from, I am a 77-year old female who had polio as a child and am being treated for chronic depression. I am so very fortunate to have one of the best psychiatrist’s as my therapist-she surpasses your listed criteria. You and she speak the same language. I look forward to learning more from your thought-provoking lectures. Thank you.
I am an Energy sensitive person. I can tell when I'm dehydrated. When I can't focus. Feel overwhelmed, fearful or simply not feeling at all. A void. I've been a fitness professional for the last 30 years. And have always known about dehydration. But your info here, was much easier to understand than reading it in a clinical study, or college text. Thank you for your time. Care and concern for others. Brenda
First time seeing you and you are spot on I'm a retired health care worker of 35 yrs plus too bad I didn't work with you in a facility. God bless and stay fabulous !!!
So timely! I studied the brain for a year as a psych student. Neurophysiology. I have tried to always stay hydrated. My mom is now refusing to drink at age 94. Mind you she went from normal, livinv on her own at a retirement community to falling and confused to spend 3 short stays in the hospital. All they could find is dehydration and low sodium and potassium. I immediately talked to my mom about the importance of drinking but she was being obstinate and angry. I am 4 hours away and she was only allowing my elder brother and sister care for her. Her own dr, who I have little respect for, said she only needed to drink 48oz of water a day. No. Not enough. And she wouldn't drink that. I told my sister she used to drink that crystal lite tea all day long. Give her that in the glass she always used with ice cubes. May it will be something she remembers and likes. Yup she was drinking more. I sent her a box of stevia sweetened flavored water drops that maybe she'd like. They are colorful, fairly tasty, and decent ingredients. She tried one, but she didn't like it. I said less is best. Try 2-4 drops in the water bottle. My sister in law gave it to her but who knows how many she put in. But at least by drinking "novely" she's hydrated enough to be able to understand her predicament and is trying. This was a week ago. Thank goodness I started following you a few weeks ago. I am going to visit her and we can watch this together and we can look at the transcript I will print. You have many other ideas which are very helpful on the behavioral side. Thank you so much! Mom may be 94, and people think, well what do you expect? She's 94! And they don't try! Well a hydrated 94 is amazing! Going to exercise class 3 days a week, driving well, good decision making. Going to get that back.
Very informative and helpful! I am 76, active and living in my own home with my husband. I have become aware of how little I actually drink during the day and have exhibited signs of dehydration you are talking about. One of them being labile hypertension. It was doing wonderfully with medication and then suddenly it started spiking at different times. No one can figure it out and they just added a new medication. I have started drinking more water and it seems to be doing fine. However, I never realized all the other areas not drinking enough can encompass and so I am going to make a concerted effort to increase my water intake. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thank you for the information 🙏. For the last 12-13 years I drink anywhere from 5-6 sodas a day maybe just maybe 9oz of water a week most days I feel irritated with anxiety and some depression I also have mood swings I recently started drinking 51-68oz of water a day hopefully it helps me.
Im glad I saw this. I drink soda but i dont remember the last time I drank some water. Im 52. I lose my balance a lot. I also am very forgetful. I went to the store for a dutch apple pie, put it in the frig to thaw. A few days later I opened the frig and saw the pie and yelled hey I have a pie and didnt remember where it came from until later that day. I will try and drink water now and see if that helps. Thank yoi for the info.

This video on hydration was very helpful, especially since my grandmother has alzheimers. I will be sharing this information with my aunt; her caregiver. I enjoy your topics so much and look forward to learning more about brain health! God bless.
My husband drinks water 8 to 10 cups of water ending up with low sodium,he was put on sodium treatment for more than two months and still struggling to keep the sodium up.Right now only 126 the normal is 138. So becareful too because it's very dangerous too to have a chronic hyponatremia! It's hard to take a URE-Na it's a powder salt and you have to mix it in 4oz of water and it's terrible taste.
Wow! This is a highly advanced topic, yet simply presented for the layman to understand. You have done your bit for humanity! Thank you 😊🧠🙏
