My understanding of Pro Mist filters is that the different strength filters are meant to be used with different focal length lenses. For example I have had successful results with this formula; the 1/2 pro mist with an 18mm lens, the 1/4 pro mist with a 25mm & 35mm lens, and the 1/8 pro mist with a 50mm & 85mm lens. If the same strength filter is used on all of your lenses the diffusion effect will be much stronger on the longer focal length lenses and much weaker on the wider lenses which will result in shots not matching, or not looking as if they were cut from the same visual cloth so to speak. I don't know with 100% certainty, but I assume this principal applies to any other diffusion filters that come in different strengths. I hope this was useful to you.
The stronger the filter and the wider the shot the more chance for highlight blooming - I found 1/8 for wider shots, 1/4 for medium, is the right for me. Though it is an aesthetic creative choice so whatever works best for your workflow! Thanks fo the comment Matthew!

Thanks Albert! This is a filter I was shown by my Cinematographer friend. I asked him what do the pros use on features. Thank you for this video, very helpful in seeing what the black magic looks like with highlights. I'm primarily a wedding videographer, trying to find a filter that can help soften the skin and lessen the harshness of some light sources. My only concern with this product is how it blooms the highlights while pleasing and helpful will lose detail in a white lace dress, could cause problems since every wedding has a bride and a white lace dresshaha.

Hey Buddy, I am flying to West Africa next month and looking for 2 ND filters to take with me for a new A7siii with a G range 16-35mm lense. Could you possibly recommend two ND filters to buy that would be beneficial for me if there is harsh sun? Thanks Rafael. I am really not a fan of the VND filters given the cross polarisation on the wide angles. I will be travel vlogging out there main'y. Also if you have an affililate link I will use that too.
That's a great question: there isn't a straightforward answer. I personally don't like taking filters, nor lenses, on and off when in the field. But Depending on what you will be shooting, if in direct sun during the day, 6 stops and 10 stops of ND if you are only choosing two. 6 Stops would work well for morning and late day shooting, while the 10 stops would cover you during mid day high sun. Have you looked at the Polar Pro VNDs? they have two versions that avoid the weird vignetting by making them half range. Or to isolate light scatter from the sky producing a deeper/richer blue colour.
@@RafaelLudwig I am looking at the two you recommended, is the Schneider version a lot better than the Tiffen Pro Mist? The Pro mist seems a bit easier to find/cheaper. In terms of filter sizes, do you usually get a larger one, like a 77mm, and just use step down rings? Or better to get each filter for each lens size, i.e 67mm, etc?
@@ClassicalTechnology I have used the Pro Mist a lot - but prefer the Blackmagic filter more - it feels nicer overall - just strong enough to feel pleasant without being noticeable. It's subjective, I know. B&H has it in stock usually. If you get a step up ring make sure you get a good one, they can break if made cheaply. and they can look weird if going from an 82 to 52mm ;)
@@RafaelLudwig I got the Polar Pro rings, I think it's made out of brass so seems very high quality. (39.99 for 82 to 67mm) I may pick up that hollywood blackmagic 82mm, I've been looking for something to do exactly what you talk about in the video. Thanks!
No exposure compensation needed to use these filters. The only thing that may need to be considered is if there is a large Light source in the shot it will over power the entire frame with bloom. Thanks for the question!
Thanks so much for your quick reply! I’ve got another one for you: Would you ever use 2 filters in a matte box, for example a Blackmagic Hollywood and an ND Filter or even a Blackmagic Hollywood 1/2 and a Blackmagic Hollywood 1/4? Can reflections between the two filters be an issue?
@@ilkafranz3146 Many times! I stack filters often, when needed. ND and Diffusion, ND and Gradients, or polarizers. And if you really needed a dreamy look, stacking multiple Diffusion filters will work if you don't have a strong individual one. In most matte boxes the glass is close enough where reflections aren't an issue. But always check the frame when stacking.
Yes you can! it's doable but you can get stuck in the fine details. You can use the free plugin Disfuse from @MotionVFX motionvfx.sjv.io/6bQg4N Also check out @Dylan john's video on halation ruclips.net/video/83FjqFsyxec/видео.html (tell him I sent you) Thanks for watching and the comment
Hi Joon, yes Tiffen has the Black Mist Pro amzn.to/3hhgKzD - I find it a bit stronger than the Hollywood black magic. But still a good filter. Thanks for the comment!
What I dislike is the light that hits the sensor reflects back, tries to get out of the lens, but than it hits the rear of this filter. Voila that’s how you get ghosting in your footage, more distracting than anything else. That’s the case for both brands. Why didn’t you compare same strength Tiffen vs Schneider? What you did makes little sense.
Completely sold. I hadn’t even heard of this filter type before. Subtlety is always the way forward, these tiny changes that are made make such a big difference. I will definitely be picking one up. I think I know the company you’re taking about as B+W filters? Is this correct, I think they are owned by Schneider optics? Great video Raf 👍🏼
Hey Edward, Not sure about about B+W filter owned by schneider, the Blackmagic filter is made and sold by Schneider Optics. It's about affecting the right parts of the image and overall the HBMF is that nice balance of image quality and effectiveness. Thanks for the compliment and the comment!
Nice - I think I'll try a 1/4 on my next film. It's in farmland, direct sun....but I think the light softening might kill any harshness. Thanks for the tight, crisp video. And great ending crossover. Cheers.
Test it out before filming outdoors in direct sun, the blooms may be too intense that bright and may make your footage hazy. Also keep in mind that 1/4 is best for medium to close up shots, wide shots 1/8 would be better. Thanks for the compliment and the comment!
May be some one wanted to ask this.. I do too-- Does it work the same on high resolution stills too or if we probe deeper into the files we might come across some latent issues? Thank you.
Thanks Robert! Looks like they don't sell it on Amazon any longer. You can find it at B&H Photo www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1109886-REG/schneider_68_091182_82mm_hollywood_black_magic.html
Rafael Ludwig unfortunatelly I am from EU and B&H is a little bit too far. After I viewed your videos I searched for the filter everywhere in Europe and I couldn’t found any store to sell it. Thanks for the video! Probably in the end I will order it from B&H. :(
Thank you for such informative video! In you opinion which filter do you recommend for creating beauty contents? I’d like to have an overall smooth skin. I like how the black magic gives that amazing Netflix shows quality. I just don’t know what “strength” should I get.
Subtlety is the key - for medium close ups no more than a 1/4, for wider shots 1/8. I use the 1/8 as a default and do a bit of skin softening in post if I need a stronger effect. Thanks for watching and the comment Sara!
@@RafaelLudwig this is backwards. The tighter the shot, the stronger the effect. The strengths are designed to match at various focal lengths. If you use a 1/4 strength on a wide angle shot, to match it you might use a 1/8 strength at a tighter shot so the effect matches. The effect increases as the focal length does.
There’s a reason that Hollywood uses filters and doesn’t do it in post if not needed. Yes, you can simulate one portion of this, but never fully. There's always a big difference between practical effects and effects made in post. Thought doing it in post assumes that most people have the skills and knowledge to do this in post - to do it right is a skill which most people don't know or even bother to learn. So it is easier for the majority to use the filter and get it in camera without the added step of doing it in post. Those that can, will. Thanks for the comment.
Awesome 👏... lately I’ve been thinking about building a camera rig (do you have any suggestions) I was looking at matte boxes, so between the Tilta and the Fotga but then this filter came to my attention..., what a beauty 😲. Thanks Rafael 🙏 stay well and safe
This is a great question! I have a Frankenstein’d rig, with pieces from here and there. My personal favourite matte box is the arri mmb-2 - and for the rig it’s mostly small rig parts - price performance it’s the best
Thanks Rafael!great video! Can i find this filtr just by that name Schneider Black Magic? Would you personally choose between 1/2 and 1/4? I have lenses 67 mm
Yes you should be able to find the filter they have it at B&H if you can't find it on Amazon. For Medium close up shots 1/4 is what I would recommend, and medium to wide I would go with 1/8. 1/2 becomes really strong. Also know that the more light in the shots, the more bloom there will be overall. You can use step up rings like this one 67-82mm geni.us/RpPa to get it on your lens. Thanks for the compliment and the comment!

Yeah, you are right. I should have shown the example of it, but couldn’t find my pro mist filter and didn’t want that to stop me from making the video. The HWBLF is better than the pro mist in my opinion. But I’m a random guy on the Internet 🤷🏻♂️. Thanks for the comment.
Everyone seems to make these Black Magic filter videos but I never really see them try it in different lighting situations. Or in real world applications. For instance I have the Black Magic Pro Mist 1/8. And if you have any light within the center square of the frame you get extreme visible green Halo reflections on the light. I understand Lenses also get this kind of ghosting halo effect. But I also have a different filter from another company and it does not show any visible green reflections. For me to really judge the quality of the Black Magic Filters is not only in the glow but also in the way it performs in different light conditions and promist does terrible when back light with a low F stop. For instance a sunset car shoot. Had the F stop low to give it more of a glow, the green cast showed all over the car it was terrible. If you wanna test what I'm saying just put a light on a stand or table pointed center of your camera. Now keep your camera centered and move it left then right. The Pro most filter makes halos stronger. Once the Light is almost off the screen or to the edges you don't see anymore Halos. This doesn't happen with no filter on. So I know it's not my lens. And it doesn't happen with my new filter. So I know it's definitely the Pro Mist. I'm rambled and the point I wanted to make is have you tested the Hollywood filter with Back lite. Or aim that filter directly center of the light and see if there's any cast, and at what point it disappears. In the Tiffen Pro mist it's stops one the light reaches the edges of the screen.
the filter is one of many techniques beauty influencers use! Skin softening plugins, light setups - also 10x more makeup that any human would actually need 😁 Thanks for watching and the comment!

Nice secret 👏🏻 do you have a secret for noise reduction on a 4000D 😅😅 jk , Keep up the good work And BTW this is what you do for a living ? Filmmaking ? Just curiosity 😉😅
Hi Laurentiu, yes my background is in the industry, went to school for it as well. I work full time with clients to create videos for them, large and small clients. Mostly behind the camera, and in Post production. This is the first time I've ventured in front of the camera ;) I am learning so much from this side of the lens! Best for noise reduction..... more light.... always more light, and lower ISO... Davinci Resolve has a really good denoiser or neat video plugin works well in most cases. Only the best of the best! 😁 except they use the full 2 on those movies. Actually you are right, my friend directs 2 Hallmark movies a year and they do use these filters A LOT! Thanks for the comment!
Thats pretty crazy - had no idea this was done with a filter. Not sure if you've done it already but you mentioned to me before about using ND filters on my Mavic to manipulate the frame rate (I think that was it at least). Ever think of doing an explainer on how to get more mileage out of the relatively limited quality from a low end drone like the Mavic Pro (or comparable)?
Dirty industry secrets! It's essentially a dirty lens, but optimized for image quality while affecting only specific aspects. Droning has been on my mind, but not sure if I want to go down that path especially with the new rules. But yes adding an ND filter will keep the shutter speed lower keeping the motion blur in the footage more natural. Thanks for the comment!
I would say that the black satin and black magic are very similar - they both retain the contrast a bit better, the black satin maybe a bit more. I am planning to do a full follow up with black promist, black magic, moment cinebloom, I will add black satin to the comparison! Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching!
@@TimandLauren I've only used the Satin once, so I can't really talk to it directly, but I really like the Black magic it's that nice balance of soft diffusion and sharpness. But either way you go you'll be happy, (or return it if it's not to your liking 😬)

(39.99 for 82 to 67mm)
I may pick up that hollywood blackmagic 82mm, I've been looking for something to do exactly what you talk about in the video. Thanks!
Would love to see how the Black Pro mist compares to the Black Pro-Mist - that example shot of the pro mist seems way too washed out.
Thanks bro, great energy, great pace, great video! Get that affiliate link.
Thanks! and working on getting the Affiliate link. I think they only give it to channels with 1k subs or more. Thanks for the compliment and comment!
Do any of these filters require exposure compensation, i.e. do they block light and require adjusting settings?
Thank you!!
Thanks for the video. Can you apply the effect in FCPX after ?
Yes you can! it's doable but you can get stuck in the fine details. You can use the free plugin Disfuse from @MotionVFX motionvfx.sjv.io/6bQg4N
Also check out @Dylan john's video on halation ruclips.net/video/83FjqFsyxec/видео.html (tell him I sent you)
Thanks for watching and the comment
Does tiffen Has a filter a little similar to the Hollywood black magic in your opinion?
Hi Joon, yes Tiffen has the Black Mist Pro amzn.to/3hhgKzD - I find it a bit stronger than the Hollywood black magic. But still a good filter. Thanks for the comment!
Rafael Ludwig thank you sir!!
you should test it with pro mist 1/8 and black magic 1/8. BM 1/2 looks too strong.
Clicked away so quick after noticing this.
@@JaneivyHilario but not so quick that you didn't take time to leave a comment -
What I dislike is the light that hits the sensor reflects back, tries to get out of the lens, but than it hits the rear of this filter. Voila that’s how you get ghosting in your footage, more distracting than anything else. That’s the case for both brands.
Why didn’t you compare same strength Tiffen vs Schneider? What you did makes little sense.
You can alleviate this by tilting the filter, see the Bright Tangerine matte boxes.
Great vid!
So you prefer FAKE to reality .
Is it possible to use this one together with variable ND to follow 180 degree rule?
Yes, stacking these filters would work. Won't cause any issue. Thanks for the comment!
@@RafaelLudwig Thanks for the detailed information on the scenarios.
Nice video very useful
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching and the comment!
Awesome vid! Thank you!! 😎
Thanks for the comment!
May be some one wanted to ask this.. I do too-- Does it work the same on high resolution stills too or if we probe deeper into the files we might come across some latent issues? Thank you.
The link to the filter is wrong.
This is great, thank you! I wish you had a B&H link though ;-)
Working on getting a B&H Affiliate link in the future! Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for making this video 👍🏽✨
You're so welcome! thanks for the comment!
@@RafaelLudwig thank you for your help 😊
@@RafaelLudwig this is backwards. The tighter the shot, the stronger the effect. The strengths are designed to match at various focal lengths. If you use a 1/4 strength on a wide angle shot, to match it you might use a 1/8 strength at a tighter shot so the effect matches. The effect increases as the focal length does.
couldn't you achieve a similar effect in software?
There’s a reason that Hollywood uses filters and doesn’t do it in post if not needed. Yes, you can simulate one portion of this, but never fully. There's always a big difference between practical effects and effects made in post. Thought doing it in post assumes that most people have the skills and knowledge to do this in post - to do it right is a skill which most people don't know or even bother to learn. So it is easier for the majority to use the filter and get it in camera without the added step of doing it in post. Those that can, will. Thanks for the comment.
great video, thanks! does the filter have front threads to add additional filters? cheers
Can i use this filter on Сanon 24-70 mm?
I am using it on that lens all the time, just need the 82mm diameter filter. Thanks for the comment!
@@RafaelLudwig thanks a lot
Will not fit. They only have 82 mm
Thanks for the compliment and the comment!
you can use multiple step up rings to adapt it to almost any lens geni.us/RpPa

Hope it helped your decision! Thanks for the comment Sam! 😀
1:25 That's beautiful.
Wow this one blew me away. Subscribed. Actually I can't find the filter anywhere though (including through your link). Any replacement alternative?
You are right it seems to be back ordered, check B&H www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1109886-REG/schneider_68_091182_82mm_hollywood_black_magic.html thanks for watching and the thoughtful comments!

dude you can't say its better than black pro mist and then do a side by side with just the pearlescent! :)
Yeah, I’d really like to see the difference between the BMP and HBM both at 1/8!

Are you talking black pro mist or the standard pro mist? And was your filter clean?
you're perfect without filter and without makeup lol
To me, no filter looked by far the best.
sandmark hybrid filter overall better
ok thanks for this 😈😈😈

I now know what beauty influencers use in their videos
the filter is one of many techniques beauty influencers use! Skin softening plugins, light setups - also 10x more makeup that any human would actually need 😁 Thanks for watching and the comment!
@@RafaelLudwig lmao yes 10x more makeup than what is necessary 🤣

you are comparing a 1/4 black filter to a pearlescent (white) 1/2 filter ... umm ok ;/
Nice secret 👏🏻 do you have a secret for noise reduction on a 4000D 😅😅 jk ,
Keep up the good work
And BTW this is what you do for a living ?
Filmmaking ?
Just curiosity 😉😅
Hi Laurentiu, yes my background is in the industry, went to school for it as well. I work full time with clients to create videos for them, large and small clients. Mostly behind the camera, and in Post production. This is the first time I've ventured in front of the camera ;) I am learning so much from this side of the lens!
Best for noise reduction..... more light.... always more light, and lower ISO... Davinci Resolve has a really good denoiser or neat video plugin works well in most cases.
Thanks for the compliment and the comment!
That's how they get the Lifetime/Hallmark movie style
Your skin is already too good, this test in inconclusive.
It's all make-up! Thanks for watching and commenting James!
Hey raf,
How does the black magic 1/4 compare to the black satin?
Does the blackmagic have darker shadows but softer highlights?
I would say that the black satin and black magic are very similar - they both retain the contrast a bit better, the black satin maybe a bit more. I am planning to do a full follow up with black promist, black magic, moment cinebloom, I will add black satin to the comparison! Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching!
@@RafaelLudwig thanks rafaael
which would you recommend to buy, the black satin or the hollywood?
@@TimandLauren I've only used the Satin once, so I can't really talk to it directly, but I really like the Black magic it's that nice balance of soft diffusion and sharpness. But either way you go you'll be happy, (or return it if it's not to your liking 😬)
