For anyone who is interested; When Tiffen created Pro Mist Filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal length lenses because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on a 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist Filters is 1/2 Promist for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 Pro Mist for 25mm - 35mm lenses, and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this is information is useful.
Thx ya for this.
Exactly what I needed. Thank you.
Woah did not know this thank you
Great. Now I need one between 1/8 and 1/4 🙄
are you talking based on Fullframe?
Man Stop self deprecating yourself . By the way great video, really helped me decide with the purchase. Thanks.
Cool 🤙
Seconded. You’re doing great.
Third(ed? Idk lol) anyways thanks great stuff
@@jesserivchin8163 🤙🤙
Yes please
Great way you choose to show the differences in many different ways. Good job! I think I would settle on the 1/8 for a few reasons, it doesn’t wash out as much it has better contrast also you don’t loose too much clarity on the face and I’m sure it will be a lot easier for the camera to auto focus compared to the 1/4, especially in low light.
amazing review, JUST what i needed. btw, you’re a good looking dude, stop putting yourself down so much!!
Lol thanks
Dude stop it / that’s his shtick!! ‘Lighten up!’
Great video! Very helpful. Also, your face looks great my dude! Great job!
You answered the question very well bro 🤛
🙌🙌🙌
Brother stop talking bad about yourself all the time man. Idk where you get that from. Just wanted to say this apart from this nice video.
Congrats on the big 10k my dude! Great little comparison in this one. I'm still undecided....looks like I'll have to eventually get both options lol
👍🤙
The 1/8th looks like a sweetspot. Definitely when combined with some haze.
Cool
Thanks for the video bro. I chose the 1/8 due to his video and love it 👍
Cool man
Dang he had it right, it helped me make a decision.
🤙
I think is safe with 1/8 and never take off from lens, nice subtle softy image from it. Other 1/4 and 1/2 is too much unless you gonna use in purpose
It's all personal preference....I think I like the 1/4 myself. But can see in different situations how I would like the 1/8 also.
Thanks for this video, Vu! It wasn't "idiotic" and you look perfectly fine. Don't run yourself down so much, it's kind of disturbing, lol. I wish there was a filter right between 1/8 and 1/4... the diffusion with the 1/8 filter is barely noticeable, and 1/4 is a little too much!
Might be suffering from "confirmation bias" because I intended to go the 1/8 route anyway and your review really wrapped it up for me. Anyway, I had to look through quite some videos before finding a review that basically shows examples and doesn't talk about how much each one costs for five minutes. Thanks!
This was very helpful, thanks for this video
If shot at wide open angle use the 1/8 but if you need to shoot a closer angle like 35mm onwards you need the 1/4 for coherency purpose.
hello! isn't this the other way around?
@@_k2filmsnope. 1/4 affects too much at higher zooms. Like on an 80mm it will be a lot stronger compared to a 23 for example.
I am here for the filters, not for a face. That is something you should share in therapy my friend! I love your videos on instagram, they are the funniest thing I find on that app
@@quevidafilms hey thanks. Those same videos on IG are here on YT shorts. Also I clown myself as a joke. Generally... I try to make fun of myself first to give my permission to roast others for fun.
This helped me decide which one I needed. Thanks!!
I agree 100%. 1/8 is the catch-all filter strength. Obviously your glass and focal length also effect how the diffusion sits on your footage. °¬)
Thanks for the side-by-side and indoor v outdoor comparisons. I like how the contrast remains with both grades. Very helpful.
Thanks for watching 🙏
Love your work brother..
🙏🙏🤙
I also like the look of the 1/8, at least for the work I do. BTW, beautiful family!
Thanks! Best 1/8 1/4 comparison video I've found, well the only one I found and it did the job. Your daylight shoot with the 1/4 made me decide to go for 1/8.
🤙🤙🤙
It did help thanks man!!!🎉
Comparison starts @5:10 great stuff!👍
If you shoot into the light and lack sufficient dynamic range, there will be problems with flare - try really deep lens hoods, they are essential!
Good test - The perfect will be 1/6
Thanks, that helped a lot
i think the focal length also matters for eg. if we are using tight focal length like 50mm 1/8 will be fine and for wide angle like 24mm 1/4 will look better , except for night time 1/8 is best .Nice video.😁✌
Brandon li has done the explanation on focal length using bpm.

Solid, definitely getting close to 10,000 a pro. I like how you provide a recommendation instead of having Me rookie figure things out by “please tell me what you think in comments”
🤙
awesome work 🙏🏻
Thanks! 🤙🤙
For my video purpose, your comparison helped me the most! Thanks! Just ordered both of them!
Awesome
I use a 1/4 for shots with any decent light in the frame. For shots with no lighting in frame I use a 1/2
LMAO "I'm sorry you have to look at", entertaining and very informative information bro. Thank you.
Lol
probably a dumb question but I haven't used a diffusion filter for video - when out doors I usually use a variable ND. Would you stack the vnd on before or after the diffusion filter or would the ND ruin the effect of the diffusion filter?
It doesn't matter
Great review. I have both and would say the 1/4 is the way to go if you are running a matte box. It keeps those flares down whenever you are using a flag so the highlights aren’t too distracting and you get that smooth look. It also depends on the camera you shoot as well. From a high contrast camera like the GH5S I prefer the 1/4 but the BMPCC4k I use the 1/8 or none.
Cool
I just ordered a 1/4 for my Sony a6400. Sony images are too sharp, hopefully this does the trick.
Should of filmed this with the lens cover on. Just kidding ~ you helped me pick the one I want. Thanks
You could buy both 1/8 and 1/4 from K&F Concepts for cheaper than the Tiffen ones
Excellent video bro, thanks so much for this video. Had to subscribe for more content. I got the cinebloom 20% and now I will certainly add TBP 1/8 this to my collection after watching this.
🤙🤙🤙
I've been waiting to get this for awhile, came back to your video and used your Amazon link for the purchase 🤙🏻
Thanks bro
Looks really good, nice work. Can you remind me what camera and lens/aperture you shot your video with?
Really helpful comparison. I liked how you showed in studio and real life examples of the filter effects. Thanks!
🤙
Thanks a lot!
I shoot with the Sony a6300 and fujifilm xt1. I prefer the og style of tiffen on my fujifilm xt1 bc I shoot with only vintage manual lens on that camera. I bought a 2 stop tiffen nd filter and paired it with a sigma vintage lens and was blown away. So I ordered the tiffen soft fx nd filter to slap on the sigma 30mm 1.4 bc I like the cinematic feel that I get from my Sony a6300, although I have received it yet. As I'm watching this I'm on Amazon now looking for black pro mist. Thx for the video 💪🏿🐺
Cool
Thanks for this review. I've got the 1/4 which seems to be good enough for me right now. When using these with an ND filter what would be the right way to stack it? Pro Mist first then ND or vice versa?
Stack shouldn't matter
im pretty scared of stacking anything. lol dont want even minimal ghosting
Yeah 1/4 kinda looks like you have a fungal colony in your lens !
Lol
Let me show you
Cool, video. I just purchased the Black Pro Mist 1/4
Cool
those outdoor shots were beautiful, interested to know if you were using the promist on top of a VND to shoot those clips with your family?
Mist only. No nd. Thanks
@@nVuFilms thanks for the speedy response! Much appreciated! 🙏
This video makes me sad.. because I don‘t know how zo put a variable ND and a mist filter on top of each other without using a filter box.
Great video man. Went for the 1/4 here for the more dramatic look. Not as a permanent filter. This video helped 👍
Does anyone have a solution on how to secure a lens with a filter so that you don't have to remove the filter and can put the cover on?
You have a beautiful face, please don’t criticize it so much
great video! subbed. I want the 1/8 but only the 1/4 can be found anywhere. oh well. it's for a 46mm micro 4/3 Leica lens.
Love your vibe; best comparison I've seen. It's strange to have sought after sharpness in an image, expensive sensor and lens, and now want to blur it, but the look of these filters is amazing, especially outside.
🙏🤙
I think when it comes to people you may want to blur and soften the image, however when it comes to subjects such as cars, food, jewellry things like that is when the sharpness comes into gd use.
1/8 it is for me. Thank you
Perfect explanation, You only needed to record some outdoor scenes with the 1/8
Hi i just ordered the 1/4 52mm for my sigma 30mm lens according to the tiffen lens to filter chart. So do i need to buy any kind of step up ring as well along with it? If yes then which one?
My estimation is that if you’re going to be close to the camera with the light, one should go with 1/8th but if the lights are like across some distance out, the 1/4 is what you want. 1/4 is way too much up close for most people’s needs.
Man’s got the children on the open fresh air wearing cloth mask !
Park required it.
BOTH
I think at 1/4 the bloom might be a little too much. I think 1/8 is good enough.
👍🤙🤙
Great video! I went with the 1/8 to leave on my 35mm f/1.8
WOWW amazing video! You are the best! Thanks a lot!!!
Hi mate, great video, but the negative comments about yourself you don’t need. You’re good man
Definitely prefer 1/8th, I use mine for vintage style photography
I agree with your conclusion. 1/8 is the perfect one to keep on at most times without worrying that you'll overdo it.
no more self deprication 😪
hey man, some feedback... it was significantly more uncomfortable to listen to you talk about how ashamed of your face you are than it was to look at it. if you didn't say anything, i really wouldn't have thought anything of it! you've got a nice face. don't need to apologize for showing it.
🤣 lol. Thanks 🙏
Bro you bash yo self every video hahaha , brother you're a cinema god bro stay up
Great video and informative. Your daughter is so cute! Lovely footages. Keep up the great work 😃
Thank you
hahaha i like the part from 3:35. I would do the same. I am also a big "self lover" person. But good one. Like
Can you put an nd filter and diffusion on at the same time?
I have a question...In really bright weather, say I had to use an ND filter how would I now be able to use the pro mist also ?..But I mainly shoot at nights however but will be times I will shoot at day also
U stack it
dang, so good!!! btw, was cracking in the beginning. man you funny
🤣 thanks
you are really good looking
bro that self deprecating humor got old real fast couldn't even finish the video lol
Great advice thank you. Could I please ask... how would you use the Black Pro Mist in bright daylight conditions? Would you combine it with an ND (or variable ND)? Or just rely on your appropriate shutter speed and aperture?
I've been just messing with the shutter. Should use nd tho
Great video. Thank you. Picked the 1/8.
you all should get the 1/8th. I like the 1/4. thats what i em getting. ty
Yeah - stop being critical of yourself. I get it, humility is cool, but too much. That aside, thank you for making the video and spreading the info!
🤙
thank you very much, very funny :-)
Most excellent review. I like 1/8th best on the face. 1/4 is borderline too much. Best to have not enough than too much!! Thanks!
I agree
Thank you for this - i was having a real hard time deciding. It wasn't easy having to endure your face but I soldiered on & got to the end.
Thanks
Not idiotic, thanks bro, great video!
lol I like your humor
🤙
I hope you vision turns out ok after looking at my face that **** had me laughing my *** off.
Lol
Thanks Vu, your review really hit the spot for me. Excellent comparisons. Sold me on the 1/8 definitely!
🤙
Thanks for useful video - already decided for 1/8 but... what about stacking them with VND? Does it vignetting? in that case Peter's VND+M can be an option...
You can stack
the 1/4 looks amazing, but hey, I am a dreamer :-)
Be nice to your face! Great video, just what I was looking for ❤️
Lol
The self insults were really taking me out of the video, made it hard to take anything you said seriously, just being honest, I came here for information not to hear you continuously dog on yourself
Lighten up
Thank you for the comparison! I plan on using one of these filters for film photography at night and this helped me to decide upon the 1/4 filter. I think its going to add some nice spice to the lighting having the bloom spread into shadowed areas with neon signs and gas stations.
thanks for this great v ideo! makes it sence if i use black pro mist filter with polorize filter at the same time ???
U can
nice video, super helpful and all, but just a little heads up, the self deprecation is probably a bit overkill, u look great and again thanks for the informative vid, subbed
Lol thanks
Thank you. Exactly what I was looking for
Out of all the videos i watched about diff filters, your's is the most reliable, thanks man, made my decision to buy the 1/8 🙂
🤙🤙
👏👏👏👏
Really struggled watching this. Wanted to click exit everytime u diss ya self. Makes me feel uncomfortable.
