- In this video I’m showing you how to use a Tiffen Pro-Mist filter to give your footage a cinematic film look. I’ll answer questions like what are Pro-Mist filters? What Pro-Mist to buy? And more. We’re taking a look at no filter vs Pro-Mist 1/8 vs Pro-Mist 1/4, so take notes and please leave a comment below if this was helpful or for future videos you’d like to see!

For anyone who is interested; when Tiffen created Pro Mist filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal lengths because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on an 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist filters is 1/2 for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 for 25-35mm and 1/8 for 50mm and above. This principle applies to all diffusion filters. I hope this information is useful.
Wow I didn’t know this. Thanks! Good thing I got the right one haha Weeks ago I bought Tiffen black pro mist 1/4 for my sony 35mm g master lens… I like the effects it gives to my images.
Useful, thanks.
so helpful 🎉
Thank you for saying, I didn’t know that
apsc or full frame, does this matter?
Here I am trying to buy the sharpest lenses possible only to then add a pro must filter. 😂
Yep thats interesting hahah
You must be from NZ 🇳🇿🤙🏾
love being your model 🖤
No one does it better!!!!
Are you guys dating? 😍
We all love it 🤭
@@coffeecup2191 you're the sweetest
You're so pretty 😳😳😳
Wish they would make a 1/6th strength :D. 1/8 seems sometimes too subtle and 1/4 often too strong. Guess I'll go with 1/8th. Thanks for making the video, really helpful.
Haha! Well 1/8 does fantastic trust me
I agree with this comment 100% lol
stack two 1/8s
@@justanotheryoutubeuploader That would be a 1/4 with more flare and less resolution, lol.
Can we use the ND filter along with the pro mist filter?
Excellent video Brady. I guess the 1/8 looks more realistic to me.. very nice
I think so too! I usually use that!
For some reason I always want to listen to the Bee Gees right after watching your videos...
You know, safe to say that’s a first!!!
Bee Gees are the best!!!
Andy Gibb?
I didn't know the Nickelback singer has a RUclips video channel. Nice video Chad !
Thanks dude!!! Next time can you look at this photograph???
@@BradyBessette 🤣🤣🤣
Best explanation of Pro Mist filters I've seen so far. Great breakdown with perfect, side by side examples that explain the concept in a way that is easy to understand for someone just starting on this subject. Thank you!
If my lens filter size is 52 mm (Front), i need to buy 52mm ND? Or bigger so it can fit onto the lens correctly?
Great info Brady. One question though: What are your thoughts on "stacking" an ND filter over the 1/8 Pro-Mist? I hear mixed opinions on the matter. Thanks.
I typically do that, experience SOME ghosting in direct light but haven't had extreme issues
Will a ProMist work together with a variable ND-filter?
I shoot a lot with variable-ND and wide open aperture but I have noticed that the variable-ND
unfortunately changes the image characteristics, such as increasing the contrast just slightly.
Do you think there may be problems by combining ProMist and variable-ND?
Waiting on this reply
Hello, if I have a sigma 18 35, which filter should I buy or if I have a super takuma
If someone cant afford these filters, they may want to try the "Glow" affect in FX in Resolve, gives a similar look and is adjustable.
Thanks for the help Don!
@@BradyBessette but is it the same look/ rolloff that you are getting in post?
@@backlightfilms nope
@@backlightfilms it’s not even close.
I've been using an 82mm 1/4 and LOVE it for music videos and short films, but we recently did a maternity photo shoot for my girlfriend with it in a field close to sunset and learned a valuable lesson. lol We lost a TON of details and had to do a lot of reconstruction with her face, so I'm thinking I might grab a 1/8 for outside shoots and when the 1/4 might be too much.
for 82 mm 1/4 is too much. 1/8 is fine. wider the lens, the effect is less. so for wide lens you need 1/4 and for 82 mm. you have to step down . this is what i read in one of user comment
Is the Tiffen 55mm Black Pro-Mist 1/4 Filter
Stackable? Like does it have threading so I can put another filter on it?
Nice breakdown! Couldn't decide between the 1/8 & 1/4, but thanks to your video I now know that 1/8 is for me 👍🏻
That’s awesome!! Thanks!!
@@BradyBessette I bought the 1/8 based on this video and honestly, It didn't make any difference, it was like, the same thing without the filter!
@@CarolMiranda94 buy 1/4
@@CarolMiranda94 for wide angle 1/8 has less power. for zoom lens, 1/8 has that effect
We dont have sunflare in germany
So I’m only 3min into this video and this is already the best video on the subject. So many other pro mist filter videos have been essentially an ad for a certain brand, or just not exploring their full use or usefulness. This is fantastic and helpful. Thanks!
Pro-Mist® is a registered trademark for Tiffen’s black diffusion filters, so this is literally an ad for a certain brand.
@@ohroonoko Yeah I didn't understand that was a ® but still, this video was more helpful than others I watched at the time. And now I have a 1/4 filter (thats honestly way too much if we're being honest!)
5:25 Did you say “angelic and glimmerous”? Or “angelic and glimmers”? Because “angelic and glimmerous” May be the best description of a pro mist on a sunset I’ve ever heard 😂
HAHAH it just came out when I rambled. But yes I did
Use the 1/8 for my stills. 1/4 a bit too much.
I agree, 1/4 definitely is used for a purpose
Amazing comparisons between a few scenes and the practicality, I think I'm going with the 1/8 as it adds a light bloom, cinematic soft flare, diminishes harsh highlights, without losing too much detail from the digital perspective, the balance between digital and cinematic film like! 1/8 is it for me!
Hi Brady. Quick question: If you don't use a filter for the entire shoot (as you seem to suggest), then wouldn't the film look inconsistent throughout? It would look soft in some parts and noticeably sharper in others.
You could use it for more dreamy parts of a story.
@@ezrarichardson279 Thank you! Good idea.
@@MrPoetemaudit No problem!
The examples would look so much better if you made your video in 4k. For those of us watching on higher resolution monitors all your examples look like blurry mush. Moving on tho I really enjoyed the content. Thanks for making the video. The mist makes a difference.
At that point my computer didn’t handle 4k well!
you really have a quality content,
Thank you !
He got the product wrong
Dayum 3 weeks ago you said almost 1k subscribers.. congrats on 17k right now haha
Hahaha right?! Thanks Simon
Looks great! Would you the 1/8 or 1/4 be suitable for corporate interview type of shoots? I'm wondering if it would make the brighter office scene look a little artificial...
Hey I would say 1/8 at MOST for that, those kind of shoots most clients like sharpness!
@@BradyBessette Thanks, much appreciated!
Hey Brady, after I watched this. I bought the filter without thinking if I need it now or not. Damn, your reviews are sooo good.
Hey that’s the goal lol
Thank you
I think that you can do this wirhout filter in DaVinci resolve with the glow effect
What do you think is it the same ?
I prefer doing everything in camera first, much easier in my opinion
Sick, dude! Legit convinced me to get that 1/4th pro mist filter.
Ahhahaha that’s what it’s all about! Thank you
Do I have to use this with an ND filter? Or does the promist already add neutral density to the footage?
Pro mists dont have any neutral density, they merely bloom the highlights. Most ND filters that you buy have a thread on the front that you can screw the PM filter in to, or even a second ND if you’d like.
@@cmduplain thanks man I literally figured that out today so I feel dumb for even asking.
Hey Buddy, I am flying to West Africa next month and looking for 2 ND filters to take with me for a new A7siii with a G range 16-35mm lense. Could you possibly recommend two ND filters to buy that would be beneficial for me if there is harsh sun? Thanks Brady. I am really not a fan of the VND filters given the cross polarisation on the wide angles. I will be travel vlogging out there main'y. Also if you have an affililate link I will use that too.
I would suggest maybe a tiffen one, I know some VNd have hard stops to avoid and polarization too
Your shoulder was on fire! What happened here, you used filter on camera filming you as well? Or is it just me noticing this 😁😊
lol never noticed till now! must be the candle behind me
Great video man but i just think about taking the wrong one too much.
I shoot with a sigma 16mm f1.4 or panasonic 14-140mm f3.5.
I am really confused about taking either a tiffen 1/4 or 1/8.
I want my shots to be gloomy and softer but dont want to feel like it’s « too much ».
Which one would you take ? Thank you !
I suggest 1/8 FIRST, and save up for the 1/4
@@BradyBessette Yeah may go for that one first, thanks for the advice!
This is why I like my vintage Nikkor AI/AI-s lenses. Sharp enough, but smooth and creamy right in the optics. It's not quite the same effect necessarily, but it really depends on the individual lenses. They all tend to flare more than modern glass. There's SO many classic lenses you can get for so cheap that can be adapted to most cameras these days. Just find the set that gives you the look you want.
Nikkor 🤣
Or the cheapest way to do that is buying old Vintage lenses to get a simmilar look
That is an option too!
Indeed. I love my Minolta Rokkor 50mm
Hey. Thanks for the video! If I have sigma 18-35 and I want to get the promist 1/8, can I attach ND to it without any problems? or any adapters needed?
Nope! The outer filter thread is the same size as the one you attach the lens. I put a tiffen VND on the outside of my promist
hey brady,
do you suggest using the black pro mist filter on interviews too?
That should depend. Often I will for women as it smooths blemishes
@@BradyBessette Are you using it or something similar on your shot in this video?
What happens if you stack the 1/8 and the 1/4?
Hey quick question, I want a 1/8 to keep in a matte box at all times but I use VNDs on my lens is it advisable to have the ND before the diffusion on the lens?
I haven’t tried it the other way around but I haven’t heard of anyone doing it or not. I’d say test both setups and see if you see any refraction or anything weird
I need the 1/4 for my latest David lynch ripoff movie LOL
Bro, I just discovered you and your channel today! You have all the info, all in one channel! Like we share the same brain! Lol. Subbed for life! 😝
Welcome to the family!!!
I wish I knew about BPM's sooner! I added one to my arsenal (1/4) earlier this year and it never leaves my lens! Recently shot a wedding with one on an old Nikon 50/1.8 and loved the footage. Honestly, I've been shooting stills with it on as well. You're letting the secret out! Ha, great video - perfect comparison at 3:55
Thank you for this! I love the look of it especially on vintage glass !
Name of the background music pls ♥
Where have you been all my life pro-mists? Love your videos mate! I shoot stills down here in Australia, I'm always battling the sun. Thank you!
Go get em!! Thank you!
I am filming a movie with a Canon M50 and a JVC 4K camera. About a killer, I had a swat team (airsoft team) act as a unit breaching a farm house. Any tips?
Thanks for the vid. Will you make a comparison video on Tiffen black satin or glimmerglass, please.
I feel like the 1/4 is a bit overkill-washed out in most cases.
Besides that, really nice channel, just found it out yesterday!
Yeah there’s kind of a time and place for it but I love it. Thank you!
I agree. I was leaning towards 1/4 until I saw this video. It will be 1/8 for me. This is the best comparison video I've seen on these filters.
@@kuunami same for me, really good examples!
So the conclusion, using black pro mist means will increasing the dynamic range.
Is it true?
Not exactly, but it does make the same highlights appear softer
Meh. They’re ok, you loose tonnes of detail and sharpness though. I’d only really use them for certain aesthetic shots.
yeah they really are based on preference!
Been watching your videos... Really love the way you light. Subscribed.
Thank you tons!
Best comparison I have seen so far and I have watched everything about this now on RUclips. I have a A7iii with 18-35mm and will be getting the Tiffen 1/4 after this!
Love the BPM! A cine buddy of mine turned me on to them a handful of years ago. Been using them on almost all my photoshoots in varying strengths. I am curious about the different Tiffen diffusion filtration. Esp the warm black pro mist 🤔
Yeah they are fantastic. Of course other brands may have better options but it’s the best quality for the price
Killer work man! Definitely going to have to pick up a Pro Mist now.
What part of Vermont are you in? I try to make it up there at least once a year.
Do it!! I’m in Burlington now, what about you!
Brady Bessette I’m currently in Lancaster, PA but whenever we go up there we end up around Stowe
Not far from me!!
So you want everything to look FAKE .
Films from the 40's, 50's, 60's. 70' had nothing of what you.re talking about but were clear and sharp and wonderful .
..i prefer the much more affordable K & F concept Black Diffusion Filters a) finer graduation b) they are (4/2024) the only mist filters with high end coating... so only the highlights are affected...
This came in clutch man! Appreciate you providing so many real world examples too.
Thank you so much! Glad it helps
Beginner here. All I currently own is an iPhone. I have filmic pro but how can I achieve this look on a phone?
So you’ve got the Black Pro Mist 1/8 on during the talking parts? Any other tips on how you’re getting that softened look and mellow colors? I was searching around for someone who already achieved the general look I’m shooting for, and this is very close! Any tech tips appreciated.
I,m sold.. it makes it look so beautiful.
really cool! What do you think about adding a pro mist filter to an action camera like the insta 360 ace pro?
Hi Brady! I loved this video and I'm about to purchase a 1/4. I noticed that a lot of people create this effect in post with very good results and I can't decide whether I should buy it or do it in post. What do you suggest? Thank you!
Can you use both vnd filter & promist at the same time ? If so, please show me how :((
yes! Camera>Lens>PM>VND
Can I use promist 1/4 together with variable nd filter?
Yes you can! I do frequently
hi, do you use the "Black Pro-Mist" or regular "Pro-Mist" filters?
Black! Sorry for that confusion
@@BradyBessette thanks!
Thanks for your review, Subscribed to help you grow your channel ^love
Is Pro Mist is equipment or just options in software?
Equipment!!
Thanks. I found it. So pity, there is no same filter for mobile
what camera did you use to record this video?
Bmpcc4k!
prosoft by pixel film studios?
Never heard of it, tiffen in this one!
What size for sigma 16mm?
I’m not 100% might have to look it up!
You disarmed me right from the start with the Rockwell. :) Plus I'm always looking for more methods too look cinematic when all the corners were cut (DIY outsider artist filmmaker and for multiple reasons I don't like oldest trucks in the box: 24 fps and cinematic aspect ratios), so it hus very much close to home!
Well I’m very glad you liked the touches and hope it helps!
Excellent video ! Thanks you :)
Thank you as well!
Nice video, but I could not help notice the blooming and halation on your left shoulder that keep fluttering the entire time you are talking.. it does not show up on your right shoulder at all.. How could this be fixed? as its baked into the shot.. Would a flag fix this? also on a camera with a small screen it might be hard to see this while filming and not noticed until post.
almost to 1,000 subscribers, look at you now buddy. 147,000
Massive accomplishment!
Did you just say a thousand subscribers? You've been busy the last two years buddy :)
Which one you recommend for the original bmpcc with a 40mm 2.8 pancake lens ?
probably 1/8 if any!
nice video man and all i was looking for. thanks a lot
can you use it with ND FILTERS?
certainly!
Does anyone know if you can screw filters on top of this filter?
Yes you can , I do with VND
@@BradyBessette thanks a lot, I just bought it! Loved the video
Thanks for the video, it's well done. When will use black promist instead of just promist?
I prefer BPM !
Hi, so in video is BLACK pro mist or regular pro mist used? Thank you🙏
Black! My apologies
Awesome comparison! I just wish you had shown which filter and camera setup you used..
Hi, any comparison to Mement CineBloom 5% and 10% filters? Regards :)
Amazing work bro... thanks for the tips... I will be putting them in practice and tag you when is up online
Thank you so much!
3:12 blooming sun effect almost like a free naturally look post processing edit
It does have a similar look but not always quite the same
Hi Brady. Thanks for the the info and especially the examples. I liked that you had real work examples without people and with people (your girlfriend). I bought the 1/4 filter to start with as i like the halation it produces more than the 1/8, although I can see ways to use the 1/8 as well, which I may purchase at a later date once I get used to using these filters. Take care, and hi from Canada! All the best to you.
hello in Canada from the US! Thank you so much! ProMist is great ! hope you like it!
If shooting outdoors, I’ll stack the filters...like a variable ND and pro-mist. Do I add VND first then pro-mist?
Put the pro mist on the lens and then the VND on top of that!
Are you using a filter in your video?
yes, black pro mist!
Did you use the black or the warm filter?
Thanks in advance! B
Black PM!
These work great I just shot a 1/8 black pro mist filter stacked on ND filter. You guys can come to my page to check out the visuals. I shot handheld with a Nikon D3200. 35mm kit lens.

was going through moment lens filter section
so if the percentage is higher
i'll get more bloom or less??
can someone help me...?
hey I bought a regular Pro Mist filter instead of the Black Pro Mist filter, will it make too much of a difference?
Hey! Shouldn’t see a huge difference, although BlackProMists have a little more black specks to keep major halation down and maintaining some level of contrast. shouldn’t be crazy different though until you pixel peep!

woww but you cant do it in the post production in PR? and u dont need a filter? thx for answering
question, is it ok to keep the sharpness on the camera at default when using the filter?
Yes
Yikes! I hate it!
It just looks like you added a dust storm to the scene 🤷♂️
Really great video!! If I have a 50 MM STM, would I get the 49mm promist?
either that, or get larger and a step up ring so you can adapt it to larger lenses in the future as you expand!

Camera>Lens>ProMist>ND
That order! cheers!
