  • If this is your first time trying Ashtanga maybe check out my 4 day introduction series: • Introduction to Ashtan...
    Practice along with me as I guide you through the opening sequence of the Ashtanga Yoga Practice through the first six standing poses.
    Learning the Ashtanga practice while balancing a career, family, and life can be difficult but it doesn't have to be. Sometimes we only have 20 minutes to fit practice into our daily schedule. It's better to do a little often, than to do a full practice once.
    This is your reminder to get on the mat.

    I have been following this class for 30 days now. In the beginning, I couldnt even touch my toes, but now I can comfortably perform all the poses, except for the cross-leg at the very end. I practice religiously everday and I want to continue this for the next 180 days. Then, I may take it to next level.

    He’s teaching to a varying leveled class. He’s giving you options not obligations. He gave you the base level and then he also showed where you might be able to go with steady practice. Give the guy a break. I don’t see ego, I see a great.

    As I read some of the comments I laughed at the whiners. This is a great video for beginners who are actually mobile and do not sit around doing nothing all day. I’m 58 years old, have never done yoga, but will easily begin this entire session of “beginner’s yoga” tomorrow morning. I’m still climbing trees, roofs, carrying heavy ladders, doing carpentry, etc., I’m a 58 yr old woman in Texas who’s still kicking ass!

    I used to practice Ashtanga many years ago, but life happened and I fell out of my practice. And yoga, for that matter. These days I feel like I'm starting all over again, as my body has changed, I'm older, etc. I remember when I practiced Ashtanga were the days I felt physically strongest and also saw myself as a strong person. I'm hoping to regain some of that through rediscovering Ashtanga, but this time in a way that works for me and not out of ego about what asanas I can do. I'm really glad I found this video because you teach it in a way that feels accessible and your cueing is just right for me, especially with the breath counts. These days I find myself tired just after the 5 surya namaskar A, so I'm working from there. My goal is to complete this whole video before the end of the year!
    Thank you for this channel. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

      He has no muscle development, he’s skin and bones and a salty attitude when someone says “this isn’t for beginners“. Not very yogi to respond “sorry you feel that way “ which is very passive aggressive. People can’t touch their toes and would like a modification rather than “ sorry you feel that way “ There has to be a starting point. Before we walk, we crawl. Wish he was more compassionate to those who are new to the practice.

    • @AshtangaNurse
      @AshtangaNurse  3 года назад +13

      @@bebemarie9311 there sounds like a lot of hurt in your comment however, skinny shaming me and then sanctimoniously writing how I can be more 'yogi' is a bit obtuse. As I have written before, there are many teachers on this platform that are far better than I am and hopefully they provide you the fulfillment you are seeking. I hope you find peace.

      @@AshtangaNurse hi 👋🏽 thanks for the tip and encouragement. I’ve been a little discouraged as I’m doing this online and the teachers don’t seem to be very engaging with the student who are online vs in person. I’m not vaccinated therefore I can’t attend classes in person on weekends which sucks but I’m hopeful. Program ends May 29th. It’s 3months only. If you have any advice, suggestions, tips I welcome them all. I do feel this is my path in my life.

    I had to modify especially the transitions and make them easier. I know that as long as I'm challenging myself a bit, it'll still work, though. I haven't done a lot of ashtanga, but it seems fun. I used this as a warm up for blogilates's 14 day quarantine challenge, which is soo hard for me, but helps me get fit again.

    Excellent video, easy to follow instructions and such calming music. I’m a totally green, beginner to Yoga. Your tutorial was perfect for a beginner. I’m really going to practice the part where you hold yourself up and then put your legs back. That’ll definitely take time for me to master, but if I follow along with this each day, I know I’ll get better and stronger each day 💪

    • @AshtangaNurse

      Yes you will get it!! It takes practice and patience. It also helps to develop the correct muscles and muscle memory about when to use them.

    • @AshtangaNurse
      @AshtangaNurse  3 года назад +2

      Advice... be kind to yourself. Muscle memory will help but think about building strength in the antagonist muscles to the ones that you want to be stretching. It may be a slower process but the long term benefits will last you through the golden years.

    For the first time doing Ashtanga, this seems like a really good flow. However, a bit more explanation of the movements would be good if you make another beginner video. Hard for a beginner to follow along without having to stop and look at your position. At the very beginning “right foot back”, I brought right foot back, “now lower down to push-up”... huh? How? Stop, rewind & rewatch.... oh! BOTH feet back, just starting with the right. Happened every time the flow changed. Finishing the video, it will be better next time because I know what to do (and I will do it again) but the first time watching is a bit confusing.
    But to end on a good note, I really liked it! I lost my balance quite a few times, got left behind a bit.... but it shows me what I need to work on and will help me monitor my progress.

      It is the first 6 standing asana of the primary series. It doesn’t need to look like my practice, it should be modified to each individual. For beginners of ashtanga these 6 asana are key for unlocking the entire series. I uploaded a practice using a chair that may interest you?

    •  4 года назад +26

      It is pretty beginner-level in my opinion. I do other yoga videos and they include the same positions as him. Maybe because of the low-push up position and his flexibility is why it doesn't *look* like beginner-level.

      I understand that the poses themselves are important to learn but then the distraction from the seemingly impossible transitions for a beginner is quite distracting

    • @AshtangaNurse
      @AshtangaNurse  4 года назад +34

      In the beginning it is all distracting. If you remember learning how to read there were 26 letters and some with multiple sounds, then there were endless combinations of these letters into words. It is easy to be overwhelmed in the beginning, but focus on one part, perhaps just one pose? Learn that one pose, then visit it again the next day and it’s transition into and out of, then move on to the next one. I put up a 4 day series that breaks this down. Check it out!
