"the practice becomes moving meditation..." and after this sentence I understood I'm hooked!
Ah yes! And that’s exactly what hooked me to this practice :-)
This is a very good statement. Absolutely I can underline it. Meditation whilst sitting is hard for me ( i m meurodivers/ adhd) but since I do yoga I feel like my brain can calm down and I feel light balanced and strong after a session
This was the absolute best explanation of Ashtanga I’ve come across. Just starting to get into this style of yoga and this was very helpful!
Thank you this is the first time I really understand what is ashtanga yoga 🧘🏻♀️ ❤️
That’s lovely to hear! Happy you found the video helpful :-)
Very clear explanation which can seldom be found other RUclips videos!
Thank you for clearing this up for me to understand better.
I’m happy you found it helpful!
My goodness, what a wonderful video. For some reason, I am drawn to Ashtanga yoga specifically. You are a lovely representative for the practice and offer such a clear, comprehensive introduction. Many thanks!

Carolina that's wonderful to hear! I'm really happy you found it helpful :-)
An Ashtanga yoga daily practice has given me more back, than I could ever give to myself!
youthfulness, energy, aliveness, enthusiasm, & mostly living in the present moment (no longer creating😮time)
this is just what i needed to start off again properly on yoga! i've been following different yogis online and not many actually explains it like how i wanted to understand about yoga. thank you Alexia!❣
You're so welcome! And I’m really happy you found my video helpful :-)

Mary you are very welcome! I'm happy to hear it's helped you understand the practice more :-)
I spent ten weeks in France helping an Ashtanga teacher set up a retreat centre... i did yoga and meditation every day and even taught myself how to jog... interesting how I applied yogic principles to an activity that I previously did not like and made it an enjoyable process. I transitioned from Ashtanga to Sivananda while at the retreat centre which seemed to upset my teacher, but it felt like a natural step to explore the inner attention during poses... I moved away from yoga after this period and 20 years later am in dire need of bringing it back to my life... watching this video is my first step... thanks.
Thank you so much for sharing your story! And what an interesting one it was! Well, welcome back to the weird and wonderful world of yoga and it’s an honor to be part of your journey :-)

Thanks for the explanation. I did an Ashtanga session this morning and wanted to know the meaning.
Glad it was helpful! I hope you enjoyed your practice :-)
Love your vioce, so calming... Could you please upload a video of a full ashtanga yoga series?
Thank you for the feedback! I am planning on doing some short Ashtanga practices, so hopefully you will enjoy practicing to them :-)
thank you so much
You are very welcome!
I do both, following a class but also alone. Some postures I want to take longer, slower, or try them more times (inversions for example). So I like to take my time and follow my body (also considering all the sequences of course)
I'm the same, sometimes I like to take a bit longer in poses to really try to get into them better. And you are completely right, it really is important to listen to and follow what our body needs :-)
so useful. thank you
You are very welcome! Happy to hear you found it useful :-)

thank you :-)
Dear Alexia, this is such a great, helpful and explaining video. Thank you so much.
I feel that in my yogalates class, what is a fusion but I would say more ashtanga yoga than pilates my teacher is following this scheme.
I feel that I do not have to look at her so much as in the beginning but still often I feel like I have to inhale sooner than I should be.
F eg I did the sunsolutation with your explanation and feel that I can t hold my breath as long and have to inhale sooner, as in the class. What would you recommend?
Doing and inhale inbetween or stay in my breath rythm whilst in class but than I am delayed or out of rythm and this is than hard to follow the group..
Just wanted to say a huge thanks for that incredible informative video. I have been practicing yoga on and off for 25 years and never had Ashtanga explained so clearly to me as the holistic practice it can be . I am about to do a weeks ashtanga retreat in Greece and now am very much looking forward to it and eager to practice and learn more . Thanks Alexia , Michelle from Ireland. x
Hello Michelle from Ireland! Thank you so much for your kind words and have an amazing time on your retreat! Where about is it?
Hi Alexia,
It’s on Hydra, run by Penelope in her home. It starts tomorrow, a little nervous but excited for the challenge, it’s my first yoga retreat and I’ve being doing your vids for the last week to get up to speed. So thank you again. Best online yoga I’ve tried and I’ve tried a few!! Best , Michelle 🙏🥰
@@michellebyrne7936 oh Hydra is beautiful!! I’m sure you’ll have an amazing time :-) And thank you so much for the lovely feedback, it really means a lot ❤️
@@AlexiaKYoga been to Hydra 6 times now, love it and Greece, if you have any other recommendations in Greece , please let me know, kinda hooked!
@@michellebyrne7936 oh wow! 6 times in Hydra?! Other nice islands are Paros (which is quite popular but the main village is beautiful), Tilos (which is quiet and serene), Astipalaia (beautiful and up and coming) and Kythira (I hosted a retreat there last year).
It feels good that people like you in Western world are teaching what Yoga is according to Patanjali. It feels very cliche when I see some people making money in the name of 4-5 different poses and calling it Yoga. Your information is research based and everybody in the west should go to the direct source of knowledge i.e the orignal textbooks before considering anyone a "Master". Thank you for spreading correct information.
I understand what you mean. Unfortunately yoga in the West is how you described, not always, but most of the times. I was lucky enough to learn Ashtanga yoga from a teacher who frequently went to Mysore, India and that is why I then started traveling to India, to learn from the 'source'.
Thank you
Otavio you are very welcome :-)
thank you so much. Excellent introduction. What is the best yoga for beginner dancer. I am starting to lean different dance style moves. Can you please suggest the yoga poses that will improve balance and concentration. Appreciate your help very much.
It would bé great if you could upload eight videos for each part of ashtanga ioga, pleeeease!
Your amazing all the way from kuwait ...Laila
Thank you so much 😀 Big hug to you!
Thanks!
You are very welcome :-)
well said dear. i miss you.
Hope you're doing well
As I'm currently researching Yoga (asanas) to find the best class for me, this was one of the best explanations of Ashtanga I've heard so far! So clear and structured, it was exactly what one needs in this world where everyone has their own explanations. Thank you! 🙏
One question though if I may. Are there other differences between Power Yoga and Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow and Ashtanga than the "the latter two don't follow the same set of asanas"?
Thank you for the lovely comment and interesting question! Ok let's see. Ashtanga yoga is a set sequence of poses and we hold each pose for 5 breaths. Think of Vinyasa Flow and Power yoga as more free style Ashtanga practices. The basis may be the same, but in Vinyasa Flow the focus is more on the flowing in and out of poses (and maybe even working on a peak pose), whereas in Power yoga we may be focusing more on long holds to build strength. One further difference is that there is no music in Ashtanga, while there can be music in Vinyasa Flow and Power yoga. All 3 types can be great for anyone who likes a more dynamic form of yoga. Try them all and you may feel like you prefer one over the other. For me, after trying them all I found that I preferred Ashtanga. But that's me! I do hope you find what you're looking for :-)
@@AlexiaKYoga Thank you for taking the time to answer my question in that level of detail. 🙏Currently I'm leaning toward the more systematic and structured approach of Ashtanga. I have tried Vinyasa twice to different instructors. One was very reminiscent of Ashtanga, slow, deliberate and it felt like a meditation; the instructor stopped giving classes. The other was more like a high-intensity fitness bodybuilding training with many postures from Ashtanga, some others postures and some pure core fitness excercises; it left me exhausted, nervous and anxious. I'll consider trying Power Yoga too, just to get a better idea of the styles. However, currently, Ashtanga seems to have most of what I want. Apparently, I'll be spending a lot of time on your channel - there's so much to learn! :) Thank you deeply for your effort in putting this channel together.
Nice
Thank you!

what a fabulously explained video. i'm sure you are a great teacher. love your cute accent, irish? :)
after a 200 YTT, if i wanted to specialize in ashtanga yoga teaching, how would I go about that?
Thank you so much Fatma for your lovely comment! I'm half Scottish and half Greel :-) If you want to start teaching Ashtanga, I would recommend you develop a consistent practice and then with time, find an Ashtanga yoga teacher you like and respect and see if they do any workshops for teachers. Good luck on your teaching journey :-)
