  • The Honda ATC250ES was the top of the line utility 3 wheeler, before they ceased sales in 1987. The ATC 250 ES also known as the "Big Red" featured a 250cc four stroke engine with a five speed transmission. It has both electric and kick start, full suspension, shaft drive, and more very thoughtful features. We bought this neglected Honda Big Red after it had been sitting for 5 years, and we return it to service!

I bought a 1981 Honda 185s two Christmas’s ago. I got a new cbr1000rr the august before that, and my three boys were wanting something to ride. I paid $250 for it, because they couldn’t keep it running. I got it home, pulled the amazon carb, and the clip came off the main needle. It had fallen in the main jet, and wouldn’t let fuel through. I wrapped a wire around the needle where the clip would go, and put it back together. It started right up, and hasn’t stopped since. lol. You literally can’t kill it. I had to unfu€k a lot of stuff they messed up doing terrible repairs, but the thing is a beast. I’ve only upped it once. 😂

I grew up on 3 wheelers 250x, 200 m, and a 250 big red exactly like this 1 and could ride the piss out of all of em, people riding them with no common sense caused them to stop making them, all you had to do is remember no matter which way you’re going, always lean up hill and into the turns and never any problems, you got a steal on this gem at $1200, id buy them in that shape all day long at that price 👍🏼

Cool little revival, John in the mud hole you got to give it gas going in you can't walk it in and then expect it not to spin that rhymed. Drag race get your weight on them back tires just before you start wheeling get that traction rolling. Very entertaining watching you guys rebuild that stuff keep it up. Remember you have a throttle and a clutch The clutch is your best friend.

Apparently John has never ran over his own leg,or ankle on an atc before,or rolled one making a turn at speed when the front tire catches a rut,nor has he flipped one over backwards climbing a hill 😆 I grew up in the 70s and we wore out a lot of atcs, and then atvs as well as big wheels, fat cats, trail 90s,etc and the atcs are fun as one can ride on 2 wheels, and they get unstuck easier, plus can go pretty much anywhere an atv can with the right rider..

I knew a couple of Firemen from OKC. I lived 4 miles from the "Little Sahara State Park" and they were there any time their days off were during the week. They raced a 56 F100 weekends but did buggies and bikes when they had days off M-F. They bought an ATC 90 that was pretty worn and proceeded to finish it off. Then installed a 175 Yamaha with 6 speed in it and it would scream but also had a lot of low end torque. One of their favorite games was to double up on it and each hold a beer while wheelieing to determine when it was time to swap places. They were a lot of fun to watch. And party with.

When you mentioned that it was one of the best 3 wheelers ever...It brought back a great memory . My neighbor got one of the baddest 3 wheeler I had ever seen. It was called DuneCycle. It had a 30 hp Rockwell twin 2 stroke in it. That thing scared the crap out of me. (Granted I WAS only 15) The first thing I had to do was crack that throttle wide open (just gotta to see what that baby will do) It pulled me back in that seat like nothing I've ever experienced. Almost pulled my hands off the grips. I'm 66 now and I still remember that feeling. Again...I was only 15. Probably wasn't Super Fast But back then...It sure seemed like it. My neighbor said they come with a 15 or a 30 hp Rockwell engines He chose the 30 hp not the Briggs and Stratton. Just an idea for your next project. There's also a Trisport Z340cc that's street legal which is supposed to be very fast also. I think one of these would be a good project (If they're in your price range). There's a Dune Cat 4 wheeler. Man I loved the 70's. All kinds of dangerous vehicles were made back then. Any body have one of these or agree about the crazy the 70's vehicles were?

Yeah, Ryan at FortNine has a really good video on why 3 wheelers aren’t a thing anymore and it comes down to these trikes needing a “when in doubt throttle out” mentality along with the ability to hang off the sides of it to keep it level in turns. Both things people don’t think about when you’re sitting on a level platform like a car does.

Most injuries were due to inexperienced riders who tried to ride them like a bike (don’t put your foot down!) and/or didn’t understand how to stay balanced while cornering.

The problem with 3 wheelers was just when folks started to race them and use them for things other than what they were built for. They are made to be a slow moving and turning work horse, not a fast ripping race machine. It was when the racing models came out and when kids would ride them wide open that all the flipping over/high siding happened.

3 wheelers are awesome. 3 or 4 they both have their attributes and it comes down to personal preference, I prefer 3 wheelers but I sold my last one a 86 350x (the goat) 22 years ago, and I've had a hopped up raptor 660. I gave up on 350x's when the prices went through the roof. I still have a 82 big red that the engine was stolen. The 87 big reds are awesome, actually pretty powerful for a 250, they are total wheelie machines not as good as an 86 350x but there good. (The 85 350x have an oiling issue during long duration wheelies) 84 200es big reds are sweet they have shaft, reverse and the legendary Honda 200 2v SOHC but it has high and low range!! but no rear suspension. The 250 is a big piggy and does not have high /low range if it did it would be perfect. My old 200 big red I could do ultra slow putt putt wheelies all over up hills wherever as long as I wanted to and my 86 350x had such a wide center of balance I could pop it in a wheelie and just keep it there as long as i wanted and going down the road i could pop the front up going 40-45mph and cruise with traffic in a wheelie indefinitely and I did several times, also leave the tires low and you can lean and go around corners in a wheelie. It just reacted slow start to go down little more throttle start to go back let off until it went back to perfect. And this is the machine not some stuntman skills because even after having that raptor for 17 years I still can't ride out wheelies with that thing for shit, Everytime I do it ends up on the grab bar because the throttle response is so abrupt for me to control in a wheelie, it's effortless to pull the tires but keeping them there is the trick, but it is modded some too it has a hot cam, big guns headpipe and R4 silencer Dyno jet kit and box mods with a k&n. The fastest thing ever? no but it really hauls the mail...it also has 18" rear and 20" front MX style tires and +3 teeth on rear and -1 on the front so it's mega snappy but it's on the chip at around 60 mph now, but mylanta it gets there quick and really violent in the lower gears.

You guys found a gem! That is pretty complete. The right side cover alone is rare and probably worth a few hundred bucks. Take care of 'Dr. Btw, #RealMenRideThreeWheelers !

Hey mr. Knows everything, the oil level would have been perfect if you didnt screw in the dip stick! You dont screw it in to check the level.

I got a 1986 ATC 125M and it has a baaaaad tank. Tried to weld it back but it kept burning through because of how thin the metal got. Tried to find a replacement tank they don't make one for it. Gonna modify a different tank to fit

The switch on the gas cap that says on and off has to be switched to on to run. If it’s off it will eventually cut off and won’t run again until you switch it back to on on the gas cap.

The 250 big red takes some more practice to get faster on a rear tire change would help on the grand prix but when mudding 2nd or 3rd is the way to go

3w are awesome. If you have ridden one, you know, but most have not. Its just as safe as any other machine you can operate. Just don't be a dimwhit and you'll be fine.

I was given one of those but the 200cc version.
The guy who gave it to me was so concerned about my safety has it had rolled and nearly killed him. I had my fair share of close calls, was half the fun 😜 it was nothing to get it up on two wheels.

Correct me if I'm wrong Ike but don't the motorcycle manufacturers recommend checking the fluid level with the stick sitting on the threads loose rather than screwed in?

I like what you guys are doing. It really inspires me, what you guys do I am 60 years old this year unfortunately. I've been watching your videos for the last 8 years I can think of. I enjoy watching you guys building engines making a run and all that stuff there blowing them up and or reckon them. Sorry Isaac you have a lot of problems of damaging carts. I learned a lot of watching you guys build stage 1 stage 2 and stage 3 motors, unfortunately I cannot afford doing that. I have a 1970 golf cart I would love to put a predator twin cylinder in it. My question is what would I do with the 215 Honda motor in it? Maybe you can elaborate later on.
