Question of the day: What do you think about Kindle Short Reads? Do you think they're a good idea? Or, is it not worth it?
Check out my recent broadcast where I showed how to find profitable categories and niches:
ruclips.net/video/DVFjnKwb0hg/видео.html
I think are definitely worth it. Especially for short stories or how to books. Great idea someone said about writing a series then put them all in a paperback. I know of a Ninjutsu writer that had five books out. Later he put all five into a single collectors edition. I'm going to try that after I get the rest written. Thanks for the great stream :)
Thanks so much for popping in tonight. Means the world to me. And, you've got the right idea!
Kindle automatically put my non-fiction book in the short reads category. i had no idea the category existed until my book made #1 new release in Business & Money 45 Min. Short Reads within a week of being released. i took a free opt-in incentive i'd already written and added exercises to it (making it a workbook) to reach the minimum page count threshold for publishing a paperback on Amazon.
proof of concept came as a result of having done paid speaking engagements around this topic, prior to creating the opt-in pdf download.
writing a shorter book was a way to get a quick win under my belt AND to get over how impossible it seemed to professionally self-publish (i outsourced editing, formatting & cover design).
hope your audience takes your advice and gives this a try!
Hey, thanks so much for the kudos! This is so cool to hear of your success. Keep up the awesome work.
For the record, I format my books into a pdf and then I post that to Kindle and the same to the Paperback. Often the ebook shows much less than what my physical book says. Sometimes less than half - which of course affects the pages read and my money through KU! I call Amazon and ask them to correct the page count. Honestly I think they do it on purpose to save money in Kindle Unlimited because they change it immediately if you call them on it. Hope this helps others to get the money they deserve. Thanks for the great show Dale!
Brilliant! I never knew you could adjust it. Thanks for the tip, @morningmayan!
I have only listened to 20% of the stream and I have already learned many stuff I didn't know. Amazing!
Thanks so much. This was a long stream, but worth it. The viewers asked great questions that helped cover everything from top to bottom.
Your advice is the BEST! Lots of super tips and knowledge. Thank you Dale x
Thanks so much for the kudos, Janice. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Hi Dale, I very recently started looking into self-publishing, and I stumbled onto your channel along the way. Great content. Now, about Short Reads: I watched your video, and yesterday browsed through the Short Reads catalog on Amazon...but it is VERY disorganized. I was checking the Scifi-Fantasy category (yeah, I know it is a VERY crowded niche) and I saw at least five books listed under the 15-minute reading category, supposedly 1-pagers, that I know for sure are full-length novels. Not to mention that most books in that list are not actually scifi-fantasy. The same happened as I broadened my search parameters. I'm actually thinking about doing this for the sheer fun of publishing (though any income along the way won't hurt), but applying your tips here on the Short Reads seems hard with the level of chaos on the listings!
Yeah, it's a bit disorganized. But, I imagine it'll iron out in due time. Let me know how it goes!
Thank you again for these streams. I do apologize that I don't have the money for your course or Kelli's. Hence why I'm writing :) Maybe later I can contribute some to the channel. But thanks for sharing your hard earned knowledge with us. Best of luck on your sales!
Believe it or not, you contribute! Your comments, likes, shares and most important, watch time all contribute to our success. And, keep in mind, I do have the free course. Get that. I hook up members a lot! It’s my way of giving back 🔥
@@DaleLRoberts Thank you! Didn't know about the free one.

Hi Dale: You have ny FAR - the BEST publishing videos out here! I'm also a subscriber to your podcast! Please tell me in a nutshell the difference between KINDLE SHORT READS & KINDLE VELLA. Now, I'm also an audiobook narrator and stopped wasting my time with FIVERR gigs and started writing my own 15-30 minute short books, and later this month pkan on publishing ebook and audio versions. Am i correct in saying that CONSISTENCY in production (as well as quality) is the key. I felt like a blindman stumbling in the dark, until I watched your vids and saw by the comments that I'm not alone. It's funny, but I get as much out of comments from your listeners and answers as I do from the videos themselves. THANKS FOR THE GREAT WORK! - Steve
Good question! Kindle Short Reads is an invite only-based category that Amazon automatically assigns to you based on your keyword choice, BISAC choice, and length of your book. Kindle Vella is open to EVERY author and limits the word length between 600 to 5000 words. And, the format and layout is limited to the Kindle Vella style (one long page that reads scroll through, not flip like normal ebooks).
I recommend checking out a Kindle Vella story or two to get a feel. The first three episodes are free of ANY series with no limitations. Give it a shot.
For Kindle Short Reads, it's become VERY hard getting ebooks into the categories because Amazon is like, "Hey, stop trying to ask for those categories, it's automatic!" haha
And, thanks so much for the kind words and continued support. Man, I've got some great viewers leaving excellent comments. I kill the negative BS and any comments that don't provide some value or insight. It's what makes this channel more of a community and less of me being some "guru" lording over his followers. We're all in this together after all!
Very informative! I want to try this with a couple short stories of mine.
Give it a shot! 😀👍
Very useful but I found it very difficult to hear you. I had my volume on high but I still kept missing what you were saying
Sorry about that...I appreciate the feedback.
Thanks Dale for sharing the insights
Thanks for watching again, Amith. I really appreciate all your support. 😀👍👏
Hey Dale, I'm a brand new author, been considering starting writing some short horror stories. Didn't know about Kindle Short Reads until finding this video. Originally I was considering posting the shorts for free on Reddit and try and build up an email list, and eventually release a novel on KDP that expanded the story, but now this is making me second guess. Do you think ~15 minute shorts makes more sense being posted for free online, or hit the ground running and get them on Amazon?
Try both. You have a sound idea in building an email list. Just don’t try publishing the free content through KDP. Just think about the long game. I’d take a gander and say you’ll do even better with compilations.
Hey Mr. Dale,
Quick question for you
when I release 5 kindle short reads and I now want to bundle it, can I bundle all 5 short reads in the 3 different formats such as an ebook, paperback, and audiobook?
Yes, indeed 😀👏👍
I owe this dude for giving me the information to get my terminated KDP account back! Thanks dude.
NC Whoa! Really? Wow! I kinda freaked out at first because I read it the other way around. Haha congrats on getting your account back. Drop me an email, I’d love more details! dale@selfpublishingwithdale.com
Hey Dale, do you do personal consulting appointments? I’m about to finish a philosophy book I’ve written, but I have no idea how to get graphics, flow charts, and images made for my book. Like the illustrations you mostly see in self development books describing what they’re talking about that type of thing. Any tips would be great, hope this makes sense. Thanks
Sure do. Drop me a line through the contact email in my about section on this channel. It’s only accessible on desktop not mobile.
Hey Dale. Is it possible to have a book in kindle short read AND have the "extended version" of the same book in the normal kindle store. Hope that question makes sense. Thanks mate.
Yes. But, ask KDP to make sure. Keep track of all email conversations.
Dale, hate to bug you, I tried uploading an ebook to shorts, got to categories and see nowhere to indicate it is a short. Can you help please? thank you, Sue Deutscher
Go back through and watch the video. I shared how to get the categories. You can’t pick them in the BISAC selections in the dashboard. You have to find them in the store then request it through the Contact Us option. You’ll get what I mean once you review what I said at the beginning and throughout the broadcast.
Thanks for the great video, one question, short reads are the same as kindle singles ?
No, they’re a different category altogether. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to get access to Kindle Singles.
Tks Dale
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Short reads in my opinion are what most newbie publishers should be doing. Not just fiction, but non fiction as well. At this stage in the game, I still prefer publishing short reads.
I 100% agree. I can’t remember which video you suggested it. But, you recommended writing one short read a day for a month. Then, compile it. I was thinking, this guy is brilliant. Some people don’t have that focus. You need an unwavering commitment to see it through. Kudos on the tip! It’s very sensible.
@@DaleLRoberts Theres so much good info in this video. Im thinking of hiring VAs to report it so it gets removed.🤣👍
DEXTER - The Kindle Publishing Fearmonger haha thanks.
Hi Dale,
I’m hoping to self publish my debut novel in the next couple of months here. After my editor returned my developmental edit, they told me my inciting incident did not occur soon enough. So, I got to word cutting.
I realized that a HUGE word count between my opening and my inciting incident was flashbacks fleshing out my MC. Thus, with a heavy heart, I eliminated about 8000 words and rewrote his backstory throughout the main story, though much less thoroughly. I certainly sacrificed some depth but in return, the story reads smoother and I get to the inciting incident around the 12% mark as opposed to the 20% mark!
That said, I feel that backstory is not only intriguing, but important to the development of my main character. With some tweaks, I’m thinking I may turn those flashbacks into a companion “short read” and let the main story flow along linearly.
Any advice? Is this something you’ve seen done before?
Yes! That’s a BRILLIANT idea. In fact, why don’t you make that short read available as a reader magnet to sign up to your newsletter?
@@DaleLRobertsPerfect! thanks for the advice!
@@alecfix4062 happy to help. Stay tuned for more.
I have one question if I can't get on the short reads list is it still ok to publish or is there a market for short stories not on the list? I want to publish 72 page book
Yeah, you'll still be fine.

Death By Cake thanks for watching and commenting.
What price would you recommend setting for these short reads?
It varies. Depending largely on the niche, you'll adjust your price accordingly. Study your category, average out the price of the bestsellers, then you've got a general idea of what you're shooting for.
Is it still popular in 2022?
Would it be a bad idea to publish a fiction short read with no chapters❓
Be Safe 24/7 I don’t see how there’d be any issues.
As a beginner in this field, to answer your question. I am in the process of preparing to publish my non fiction, true life crime book (financial crime and corruption), to start. I do have a ghostwriter/editor to help me along the way. I appreciate your videos, learning a lot. I do have a question though, why can't i publish to, for example, Amazon and Google simultaneously ? Also because I need it to go international, I would need additional language translations. Is there a platform that lets me choose multiple languages or do I have to have the manuscript translated? Thanks, I will keep watching & learning.
Boldbro You can publish to Amazon and Google if you want. Just avoid enrolling your ebook in KDP Select. And there are som platforms that do translations but none I recommend at this time. There’s not enough transparency on some of these platforms, that’s why I wouldn’t recommend any right now.
@@DaleLRoberts Wow! that was quick... Anyway, thanks, really appreciate the response. Be safe!
Boldbro wish I could be of more help. Congrats on hitting affiliate.

11/11/2023: are Kindle short reads still viable?
They're still around and still rather profitable. Getting into them isn't as simple as requesting it now. You have to have a book a certain length with specific keywords in order to qualify.
Some gurus say that it's impossible to make money with short reads. What would you say to that?
That’s their opinion.
Great content. The volume was low
Yeah, I didn’t properly set the mic volume. This was the only time my mic was like this. Sorry about that.
Sorry I can't make the live streams. Time zone differences :/
Oh, I’m always glad when you watch later and drop a comment. And, I totally get it. Some of my favorite content creators stream at times I can’t make. So, I don’t sweat it. I just catch the replay and drop some comments 😀👍👏 it makes a difference, believe me. 💪
Yes I can say the same, I was going to sleep when I received the notification, but I saved the tab to listen to the stream today.
Nice. That’s so awesome of both of you to tune in. 😀👍👏
But what if I believe that Romance belongs in Health & Fitness?
That's a bit of a stretch. Unless it's so much of a stretch, it's actual stretching. So, in that case, it would work haha. Just kidding.
What about nonfiction books.
Absolutely!
Hmm. Think this is a good route for my kids books? Still watching now.
Explore all the niches and see if you’ve gotta a shot at it. 👏👍
@@DaleLRoberts going to try today. Just saw that my first kids book is now in sleep issues. Wtf Amazon.
