"You might make money, and you will get the bug." I love it, and it's 100% true. Too many would-be authors get into it with the idea that they will be hugely successful and be able to do this full time. The truth is that you're definitely going to need a main job for income until / unless you become a good mid-lister. This is likely going to take 20 books or so. Expect failure, and accept that failure is just success in it's infancy. I write for the love of writing. If my books happen to make money, then I'm beyond pleased, but I never write with the expectation that it's going to make a dime.
My pleasure! I've been sitting on this video for a bit. Stay tuned, because I've got more video in production and plan to get on a schedule of 2-3 videos per week. This video was a lot of work, but so worth revisiting some of my previous interviews.
This is the motivation I needed to continue developmentally editing my book. I have been feeling unmotivated because the edits were overwhelming but I realize that I have to keep going.
That's the ticket! I'm so glad you were inspired by this. I struggled with whether I should release this video or not, but comments like this tell me it was definitely worth posting. I'm thinking about doing a part two.
I appreciated the advice to choose a niche and stay committed to it. That's exactly what I'm doing. I started with my first series in Epic Fantasy Fiction, and from there, I began building my world. This world has inspired additional series that are interconnected, yet each one offers a unique story and perspective.
Thank you for sharing this video Dale there is a lot of great information to take in; also I recognize some of the faces in those interviews. I would say to summarize all of these are 3 things: (1) Don't give up; (2) Keep going & (3) Believe in yourself.
I really liked this video; thanks, Dale. I have not gone through all of your catalog but is this something you have put out regularly? With different questions being answered across multiple interviews?
Usually I ask the same question at the end of every interview (What advice do you give to aspiring authors and self-publishers?). You can catch all the interviews on my podcast channel at www.youtube.com/@selfpubwithdale.
Hi I’ve just written my first novel and I want to publish it but I don’t know how, my book is fiction and I want to become a full time author but I don’t know if I should use kdp ( I have like zero marketing skills ) or traditionally publish my book because Ive heard good and bad things about both and I really don’t know which would be best for me so if anyone has a opinion on which is better please reply I would really appreciate it
It depends largely on your goals. Here's a quick overview: Self-pub pros: Higher royalties, more control, quicker publishing process Self-pub cons: More work, no support, self-funded Trad pub pros: Less work, wider reach Trad pub cons: Lower royalties, less control, slower publishing process My advice: Start with KDP. There are tons of videos showing you how to do it (on my channel and dozens of others) and KDP even has a free course called KDP Jumpstart that'll help you out.
Thanks for this video, Dale! Another great one to add to my Dale saved folder.
Nice!
Thanks for this! A lot of valuable advice here.
You got it!

I think I will watch this video every time my motivation drops.

Glad you enjoyed it!
Incremental progress is still progress. Yon need to be unstoppable. And you will make friends along the way.
Agreed!

❤ Dale, this was a great video. Could you do a video on different podcaster around the world?
I'm not sure I know what you're asking. Could you rephrase the question?

Maybe for the book i'm currently writing, maybe i'll publish it with any typos that currently exist, just to see what happens?
I wouldn't recommend it because if you get enough customer complaints, you could get your account terminated.
