- Why are Dubia Roaches illegal in Florida?
www.thecritter...
Dubia roaches are a very popular feeder insect for owners of all kinds of reptiles, including bearded dragons and leopard geckos.
They have a lot of benefits, from their nutritional value to how easy they are to keep in colonies.
But for reptile lovers in Florida, it’s not that easy.
Florida has outlawed dubia roaches statewide.
But why? Florida’s climate is almost perfect for roaches to survive and reproduce. This has worried state officials for a while.
Because, if by some accident, a colony of dubia roaches were allowed to escape into the environment, it could be disastrous.
Dubia roaches, like most insects, are capable of reproducing very quickly.
If released into an environment where they could reproduce, they would quickly spread and become invasive.
Because of this, the state of Florida has punished anyone buying or selling dubias in the state harshly in the past with hefty fines and even jail time.
While it’s not clear what effects that might have in the long term, invasive species are never good.
They often disrupt food chains, become crop pests, and in some cases, spread disease.
Because we can’t predict what would happen if wild dubia roaches began spreading across Florida, the smart move is to prevent it from happening. Although dubia roaches are illegal in Florida, there are some excellent alternatives:

Omg ive been wondering why i cant find live dubia. Im stuck with mealies, supers, or dead nasty dubia that my babies want nothing to do with.
We can purchase discoid roaches here in Florida. They are just as disgusting and my beardie loves them!!
The state is already covered in roaches lol.... hell they even got roaches in goverment in Florida 😂
Lmaoooooo
So it’s ok that we can have illegals (who bring viruses, because they’re not required to be vaccinated)but not bugs to feed our pets??
I've tried raising crickets; but, the dubias are much easier. My bearded dragon likes the roaches. When I lived in Florida back in the early 80s, there were all kinds of roaches that people told me about. The biggest ones were big roaches that could fly. People called them Palmetto Bugs. Dubias reproduce quickly under the right circumstances; but, at least they don't fly.
Florida doesn't need another invasive critter. They would definitely escape and multiply. For once I agree with a law.
You don't agree that murder is illegal 🤨
@@Tritonofclansakai2 what murder?
@@comfortablynumb9342 you said you don't agree with law unless you were talking about stupid laws
Yeeeaahh, I'll stick with crickets.. 😋
It's isn't nutritional for the animal and they also bite your pet
@@Tritonofclansakai2 - I have chickens & I don't want to handle roaches, thanks..
