  • We replace a rotted transom on on a 1989 Pursuit 2650 with rigid no-rot Coosa Board! Coosa panels are used throughout the marine industry as an alternative to wood and other core materials on transoms, decks and stringers. Watch as we dive deep into the material properties and bring this late 80's boat up modern standards.

Finally somebody sees what I have been thinking. That is to overlap your run of mat over good material on the sides and bottom to reinforce it. This would certainly give it strength. I see lots of people talking strength but, they use the wrong mat material and this is the first person I have seen that actually overlapped it.

Any time you have two big surface that may have some voids it’s best to think of it like tile. Use thickened epoxy and use a smooth with a step trowel. You want to make the lines vertical so the lines don’t sag and trap air. Push the Coosa board in contact at the bottom first. You’re working the epoxy squeeze/air from bottom up. It’s ok to use boards from the inside to push along the bottom and sides but not in the middle or top. You don’t want to bow out the transom. You will need long reach clamps for the middle.

Your wrong, THE CSM HAS A FILLER THAT IS DISSOLVED BY POLYESTER RESIN NOT EPOXY! In this application polyester resin is better. It dissolves the CSM FILLER AND MAKES A BETTER BOND THAN EPOXY. But really epoxy is fine too

I just stumbled across this very neat and well produced video, and I am massively impressed with the Coosa Board Product which I had not heard of before. However I notice there are no bleed holes in the board like standard structural PVC and also we would normally vacuum a job like this particularly where the access is this good. I'm Not knocking your work for a second but can you be sure you have achieved a void free bond and the best structural integrity?

will that work good on aluminum boats? 14' I was researching the best wood to replace the transom wood and ran across this video.

I like that its lighter and doesn’t rot but i heard that screw retention is not as good as wood and also am wondering about the strength of it vs wood

What about attaching the stringers to the transom, is that an important structural step?

I'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR 40 YRS AND YOU SHOULD THICKEN THE EPOXY TO FILL TINY VOIDS AND IMPERFECTIONS IN THE ORIGINAL TRANSOM SKIN

Wow, this has been up for months without any comments from know it alls who think it's a sin to use anything but plywood for boat repairs. Apparently some people need job security so much that they insist on repeating the same mistakes over and over.

I remember the days of wood boats and all the issues with worrying about an open seem out in the canyons fishing. Sure an old Chris Craft type of skiff, runabout look great but with all the new ways Not to use Wood ya have to be crazy to use wood in any piece of a boat. I like to fish, boat, dive, ski, explore, ect. not be married to a boatyard . I have 2 boats 1- 28' with doubles and 1- cheaper Angler C.C. neither have any wood in them Period. Sandwiching wood with glass always will rot over time. good job n video.
