- The DEWALT 20V XR Brushless 5" Angle Grinder with POWER DETECT Technology (Model DCG415) has up to 40% more power than its predecessor (Model DCG413) in use with a 5.0Ah battery. This new DEWALT Angle Grinder achieves over 1350 UWO, has a no-load speed of 9000 RPM, and features a Spindle Lock, Kickback Brake, and E-Clutch.
DEWALT's secret to the new power is newly developed electronics in tools called POWER DETECT Technology that can identify the battery the tool is paired with and adjust power output accordingly. This technology helps the battery and tool mate up to perform the best. For example, this Angle Grinder will know the difference between the capabilities of the 8.0Ah XR battery and the 5.0Ah XR battery and adjust the power of the tool accordingly. If you are thinking that most tools do this already, that is not true. Most tools will perform slightly better with a higher power battery attached, but they will not significantly increase the power of the tool like the new POWER DETECT tools will. The POWER DETECT will also lower the power of the tool to save batteries that will not supply the full load-bearing capabilities.
For reference, RIDGID has a similar, but not as sophisticated, set up with the OCTANE tools they produce. In order for those tools to get the most power, they need to be paired with OCTANE batteries.
DEWALT is promoting this as a huge step forward for commercial contractor applications. The job site is where premium power, performance, runtime, and productivity are required. The new DEWALT POWER DETECT tools also feature upgraded motors and components compared to their predecessors. These upgrades, combined with battery pack identification, provide a premium capability for the professional user and continue the expansion of the cordless job site.
To compare this new 20-volt angle grinder to some of the best on the market, we have to use DEWALT's UWO (Unit Watt Output) standards. The new POWER DETECT model is rated for 1350 UWO while the top of the line DEWALT FlexVolt 60-volt angle grinder is rated for 1700 UWO. Compared to the prior models, the new 20-volt line is creeping up on power and going to compete with their larger FlexVolt brothers at some point.
As technology grows, smaller and more powerful tools will be made. In some cases, the need for higher volt batteries will diminish and the properly sized tool will rule the job site. We will not always need a drill with an 8.0Ah battery, but when we need serious corded power, we can pull out these new powerful tools and get the job done.
These tools are available now. Each tool will come standard with a three-year limited warranty, one-year free service contract, and a 90-day money back guarantee.
SAFETY! Please people, take the battery out when you change the disc! Fingers aren't as easy to replace as the battery!
I just bought this Power Detect Grinder Kit at Lowes for $275 and it came with a Free 8.0ah battery, Great Deal , that extra battery cost about $150 by itself and its always nice to gave 2 batteries anyway.....👍🛠🖖
This is an upgrade. We use our 4 1/2" almost everyday. Have worn out more than one. Have another about ready to go. This will be our next one. Now they need a 10" sliding miter saw. The 12" is great, but very expensive and very heavy.
Hell, I can make a corded grinder bog down and cut out. That XR is freaking impressive!
With corded grinders, get a larger amp motor and you will not be disappointed. The 4.5" ones are usually 7 amp size range, often 6.2amps. If you get a 11amp or 12amp in the 4.5" size... you will be impressed.
@@airborneexplorer I agree, working on pipeline jobs, a grinder can really get worked hard.
I'm open pakistan Markit
I think DeWalt realized their mistake by going to the flexvolt and leaving alot of people on the 20v platform standing there holding the bag. I think this is a good move especially after releasing the anemic....I meant atomic...oh no I didn't. Great vid brother.....
Alot of DeWalt guys switched brands.... especially the guys who were not too deep into the platform. Well played DeWalt.
There’s no mistake going to flexvolt..no other tool brand matches the power of flexvolt. As a builder I guarantee no other tools match flexvolt, ( except sawzall) not the mitre saw, table saw, circ 575 or 577, sds, vacuums, or grinder...if you use a 9ah or better still the 12ah...
@@joeframer9642 we can agree to disagree. Flexvolt powered tools are awesome no doubt however DeWalt did abandon some of their 20v customers. I'm a Milwaukee guy and I use DeWalt as well. I am just glad that DeWalt came back to their 20v line and are giving customers decent power from 20v. People are hooked on volts...... remember 12volts starts most cars every day.
Donny Sanner Excuse me for chiming in but Dewalt never left the 18/20 xr users wanting ,as that platform was and always will be expanding and they are very powerfull and well capable of easily handling commercial applications. The Flexvolt system is awesome and Dewalt saw the future demands of people and given people another option .Btw Makita has come out with a totally new 40 volt system but unlike Dewalt Flexvolt the batteries aren't backwards compatible.Btw once you use a Flexvolt 575 saw you realise the high volt advantage.
Donny Sanner I have the Atomic compact drill and it's got great plenty of power!
@@interman7715 I wasn't meaning it in a disrespectful way , what I was saying is without the flexvolt the 20v sawzall vibrated terribly and really did not have much to offer in the 20v line. Things are now different....
Dewalt needs to make an adapter that will slide into these 20v tools where you can have the option to plug it into an outlet. Just think it be a great option like they did with the big miter saw.
Can't sell batteries that way
Can you possibly test all the power detect tools vs their older models like this? oh and the stand alone reciprocating saw. if it's possible. I'm very interested in the circ saw especially.
I have the previous dewalt brushless grinder and I’ve always been happy with it. This new one really does appear to be in a whole new field. I’d like to get a new one. But I’d have to buy the kit to get the 8ah batteries. And that’s money I just don’t have.
I’m so pumped just bought the Black Friday deal at Home Depot drill impact 2 batteries oscillating tool compact sawzall 6-1/2 inch circular saw and that angle grinder for $399
I bought a similar set. it's my first power tool I ever owned. with the Zigsaw and the Angle grinder. Did your set comes with a blade for the Reciprocating saw? I have everything included but is missing that. Wish it have a 3 or 4 amp battery instead of two 2 amp battery.
@@SuMtOnE it’s a good first set but no you have to buy the blades separate. Idk if your in the trades but keep the compact drills at home they’ll be the butt of some great jokes on a job site lol
I thought the power detect was exclusive to Lowe’s ???
Kick ass grinder I have it and use hard in the field. I really just wish they would add variable speed feature to it
I am thinking about picking up a dewalt cordless grinder and I "think" the DCG515 is the newest but not 100% sure. I assume you could just partially squeeze the paddle to use at lower speeds is that not the case?
Speaking for myself I don't think I would buy any grinder having to use a battery for power source, I'm sure they would go through them like hot butter! But it's good to have one just in case.
Love my flexvolt model it is a beast
Wow that looks awesome and I hope Dewalt starts to price out the batteries at a good cost. love that flexvolt grinder but run time is a downer. Thanks for the video guy's. Awesome job!
Very good explanation of new battery system of power detect grinder.was a little confused 🤔 before this video .
@Work Shop Addict, I guess I'm gonna have to get one of these and try it out. Out of all the Grinders I own, (and it's alot) I only have 2 Dewalts, 1 corded 4-1/2", & 1 20v 5" Cordless. I like the Curdless one that I have except for the fact that it eats Batteries for lunch. I have 2 5.0ah batts for it, but this week I just ordered 2 of the 9.0ah Flexvolts for it, and my Cordless Vac. I'm going to order this unit, and see how well it holds up.
Thanks for the Video/Review!
I think you will like this. All grinders like batteries!
Good informative and good demonstration video
Wow congratulations with it.
I have only used my corded grinder a couple times since I've had this grinder
💘 this grander recomended!!!
Nice vid!!!, watching this convinced me to get the 998, 887, and the free angle grinder tomorrow at Lowes.. I forgot the 8.0 and 2.0, fast charger also included
Great review and channel...I was wondering if it compared to the flexvolt. Thanks👍🇺🇸
Agreed great review, but power detect is lowes way of selling flexvolt. If you buy at lowes you get power detect if you buy at home depot you get flexvolt
Power Detect is a 20 volt tool, not a 60....
John F. Like Brian said, it’s still 20v (18v) just a beefier motor and software to maximize use of the 8ah battery..
I get it and im not saying its a bad tool. I haven't had time to look but i can bet all the specs are the same as flexvolt. I love dewalt tools and use the shit out of them daily but just wish they would come up with something new.
@@johnmflores85 You did not watch the full video as I talked about the spec difference between them.
I hope they come out with a worm drive style saw in power detect that they can get the weight down, I love the 60v and more and more of my framers are using them BUT, that thing will put some guns on ya.
Cant wait to try the blade right model just to see the power they can get and I too hope they make a blade left.
Nice got mine today but they forgot to put the power detect sticker on top😂
Is there a point in getting the DCG415 over the DCG416? I've been reading a lot about Power Detect vs Flexvolt Advantage but still get confused about one thing. As of now I only have regular 5AH batteries. I don't have any 8AH and I don't have any flex volt batteries.
I need to get a grinder and for some reason the DCG416 is cheaper than the DCG415. I know that the DCG415 will get a power bump when using with a 6AH or 8AH battery.. and that the DCG416 will get a power bump with a flex volt battery. Well what about if put a non flexvolt 6ah or 8ah battery in the DCG416... does it also have "power detect" in the sense that it will get the same boost as you'd getting putting those batteries in the DCG415? Just trying to figure it out because down the road it's more likely I'd get a 6ah or 8ah battery before I got any flexvolt stuff.. so I wanna make sure the DCG416 will benefit from those the same that the DCG415 would. Thanks
First off, I think your tool tests are probably the best and most unbiased tests on RUclips. Second, I read the flexvolt batteries don't give the 30% increase in power. Is there any difference in the 8ah and 6ah 20v batteries?
Not that I could tell.
I own dewalts 20v and 60v batteries there’s a significant power increase
@@Fishpalms did you watch the video? It's not the same 20 volt.
DeWalt 20 volt lithium ion cut off grinder nice
This machine magnificent
Simple question about angle grinders: Why get a 5" rather than a 4 1/2"?
This is a 4.5" to 5". 5' give you more consumable to use before replacement.
Great vid👍
They really need to bring out a new impact driver. The 887 is getting really old and is just not that good. But i already know when it gets released in america it will probably be another year till it comes out in new zealand
That grinder was crazy powerful before the power detect!
Second simple question, about Dewalt's future plans: Do you know if they're coming out with a 6 1/2" BRUSHLESS circular saw? Not track saw. I'd really like to get one, and would prefer to stay in the Hive (bumbebee colors), but if Dewalt doesn't come out with one before Father's Day, then Makita is likely to get my money.
Agreed. The 6-1/2" saws are a sweet spot for a lot of people. I literally never need a larger circular saw for anything that I do.
John Sanford why, it’s not a popular size. The 7 1/4 is for framing, remodeling...what’s the point of a brushless 6 1/2? More runtime, use a bigger battery. It won’t have more power. Your better off with a smaller saw
Very cool video
I'm not to deep in the 20v stuff. Seems like flexvolt are the way to go but the price of the batteries is what sucks 20 or 60v.
315 vs 318 is only about $20 tops with one battery. My question is I don't have a DeWalt cordless grinder yet and I only want to buy one. 20 volt or 60 volt? When I do cut and grind it's big metal 1/4 inch or above.
Last question in this is very important. I've seen a few videos of people demonstrating putting the flexvolt batteries in the brushless 20 volts and smoking the motors basically destroying the tool. What's your input on that. Great videos and thank you
I have seen people smoke old 20 volt tools with flexvolt batteries, but not new tools. The flexvolt grinder is a beast, but so id the power detect with the big battery. If it was me, I would think long term of if I need anything in the flexvolt system. If I might in the future, get the flexvolt grinder. If i thought I would never need a flexvolt tool, I would stay with the power detect and enjoy having tools that work all on the 20 volt platform. It would suck to have one tool in another battery platform.
WorkshopAddicts, This comment/question does not relate to DeWalt power tools but it does relate to Ridgid. Have you guess checked out the RIDGID 18V OCTANE Cordless Brushless 3/8 -inch 6-Mode Impact Wrench Kit with 2.0 Ah Battery and Charger Model # R86239SB? If so, what are your thoughts? I bought one and the sockets are extremely hard to put on and take off. It hands up on the anvil ring. I am not sure if I am going to keep it or go with Milwaukee's 3/8" impact wrench. This Ridgid impact to me seems like a little let down. The other thing i find frustrating is that Ridgid Octane tools do not come with the octane batteries, at least not in Canada. So if I want batteries and a charger to be covered with their LSA program I have to spend another $250.00 plus tax Canadian Dollars to get a 6ah, 3ah batteries and a charger. They say they are trying to make their tools a affordable. I told them this is not affordable. Sure it comes with a 2ah regular battery and a cheap crappy looking charger. to me, that is going backwards. Just my opinion.
We have not looked at that exact model, but it sounds like an impact driver made into an impact wrench.
@@WorkshopAddict I think that pretty much sums it up. I paid $124.99 Can for the impact set, not sure If I keep it I will need to spend another $250.00 Can for the batteries that are deigned to make this tool work to its full potential and charger so everything gets covered with their LSA program. With that amount of money, it is almost cheaper to go with the Milwaukee fuel 3/8" set. And the Ridgid does not even come with a case or bag. I just looked at Home Depot website and it is cheaper to go with the Milwaukee. I can get the Milwaukee as a tool alone plus they are gifting a charger and battery for $199.99 Can. Better tool for a better price.
I have all DeWalt but the battery prices are crazy
We are buying technology now, not tools..... I understand completely!
20v power is the same 8amp 5amp is the time use available, I have 8s and 5 and 3s and 2s I've seen no difference in power
I want one of those dude
So, nice;but missing variable speed so polishing and slow cuts are out. Sad.
I'm in the market for a dewalt 20v grinder. Do any of them have variable speed or no?
Great grinder but dont like the fact the guard doesn't lock completely. Ive notched the lever so you cant move the guard accidentally. Dewalt should of done that in the first place.
Looks like it has the same nut collate as the flexvolt
Would be neet to do a comparison video against the flex volt model
Keeps tripping out and resetting brushless New DCG$!#
Hello l have a question how long is the run time when using a flap disc ? Want to buy for work thanks great video
My trigger quit and it’s cheaper to buy a new than fix?
Why do the dewalts for the price not come with a type 1 guard ? Milwaukee and makita come with both . Thanks!
Pretty sure the comparison video you ran with the flexvolt grinder you DIDN'T use a similar sized battery... you put 6(ish) amphour Batts in all the grinders... Which is a 2 amphour in the flexvolt.
So you compared a milwaukee and bosch with 6 amphour Batts to a Dewalt with a 2 amphour batt and got roughly 3.5 min runtime
That would make sense. It has been a long time since that video. fv does not have anything close to a 8.0 Ah battery in the 60 volt mode, so one could never test that.
@@WorkshopAddict no, but if they did (or do someday) it'll be another game changer.
I just bought this model the other day. Gonna do some stuff with it today. When I plug in the battery that came with it to charge it, it makes a whirring noise. Is it supposed to? It looks like the box might have been opened prior to me taking it home so I just wanna double check. I have a cordless DeWalt drill and impact and the battery charging is silent with those.
Thanks for your video My issue it does not accept the hook and loop pads for sanding. Both are 5/8-11 thread Why and we solve it
How we solve it
So is the grinder supposed to spin faster when you have a 60v flexvolt battery in vs a standard 20v battery, because I can't tell the difference...
Hi, in my country only have a dgc413 and 414. What have a much longer for use ?
With the the 8 amp battery
Hey guys I watched your video on the Ridgid octane planner and y’all said that Ridgid is suppose to be comeing our with stuff to out do Milwaukee have y’all heard anything else on what they are doing
nothing at this time
👍😁
Hey Brian,
I hope dewalt can use this technology and apply it to the DCf 887 impact.
That impact had been getting bad reviews with over heating / burning up.
I agree. We do not have an impact to test and one is not showing it is coming.
How many bits do you want to break?
Can you turn the head 90°?
How does it compare to the Metabo HPT Multivolt grinder?
Very similar power, probably a bit more power with Dewalt and more runtime with Dewalt.
What are your thoughts on the makita vs the flexvolt. I bought the makita because I have 6 makita batteries and I own no dewalt batteries so I think I made the right choice.
Yes, it makes little sense to dive into the new battery platform for a bit more power.
WorkshopAddict agreed I just wanted to make sure that I made the right decision.
Why did they give me a allen wrench for ? I dont see anyware it's used for
@goovitoo that is the tool to remove the blade lock. Kind of neat rather than a odd wrench to change blade. But who really needs it, it is only if it gets stuck.
Hi Brian,
Still disappointed that DeWalt didn't released the UK Model of this disk grinder. It has the side on / off switch. Really don't like the paddle style. Plus they should have added another slot on top so you can put the handle. It's easier to control cutting sideways.
Is the 8.0ah battery and the 6.0ah battery the same size?
Michael C in a lot of places you cannot use on off style ones on building sites
@@joshbenton810
Wow, didn't know that. Still would have been nice if dewalt release the side switch model in the US. At least we have options for people who can use them example Homes, DIY, small garage shops or even some metal shops.
The paddle style is a pain in my opinion.
Thanks
How is the power on this compared to the m18 fuel grinder?
IMHO, I feel it has more. It is smaller, so that changes the feel a bit... But I still feel it has more
@@WorkshopAddict gotcha, we have an m18 fuel at work but I'm not really impressed with a power, have you ever tried throwing a high output battery on one of them?
@@KenyonPayne Yes, the new HD grinder with a 12.0 is pretty wicked with good runtime.
@@WorkshopAddict which model # is it? The one I used is the 4.5-5" version
Where were you able to get the new 415 model Brian?
Mine came direct from Dewalt, but they are in stock at Lowes I believe.
How is the power difference between this grinder and the slightly older "non power detect" angle grinder if you put the 8ah battery on both grinders?
The difference is pretty noticeable. I am unsure how to put it into a percentage.
@@WorkshopAddict I already own the DCG405, would you upgrade to the Power Detect Version and why or why not?
@@markusk.488 I would upgrade if I needed the power or runtime. Are you currently feeling low on power? What are you using it for now?
@@WorkshopAddict I don't have the feeling that i would need more power because i always try to let the tool do the work and not putting to much preassure on it.
I'm mostly using it for cutting mild steel and deburring the sharp edges with a flap disc.
The most important thing for me is the runtime and i think that the DCG405 already has a pretty good runtime for a cordless angle grinder.
I will keep my DCG405, it served me really good and for bigger projects i stil have my corded one.
I also wanna thank you for answering all of my Questions :)

hi, at the minute 2:58 , is that a kickback brake?
Not sure if that is me killing the motor while pressing hard or the kickback brake. I want to lean to the motor cutting out as I was trying to stall it and once it did cut out, my energy pushing on it pushed me around a bit.
How does this compare to the Milwaukee fuel?

Since I had never used one, I watched a couple of youtube videos and I'm so glad I did. Some really good safety tips, which I followed, and this tool did a splendid job. "The guard is removable"
That is how you get a lawsuit! Lol some idiot who has no business running tools will get injured with the guard off and blame you
Well, they can also blame the owners manual who states the same. I think it is important to know the guard will come off so you can change it to a different style, but also important to note not to move it like I did as it is hard to get back on.
@@WorkshopAddict good luck finding a different style, that fits. Or event a different style at all.
The guards suck and I have piles of them, most never used. Then when I actually need one it's a fight to find one that fits correct. And the styles all the same stupid design for last 20 years
