Mercedes, I agree that Victoria is well worth a listen. I'll probably get shot for this, but I think he's better than Palestrina! Do you know if he wrote any music for solo voice, rather than choir? My favourite Victoria recording is his Requiem, sung by Westminster Cathedral Choir.
I would love to hear you do the Pergolesi Stabat Mater Aksel. Do you know it? It is very beautiful. I have a recording with then treble (now a very fine baritone) Sebastian Hennig performing it. Also do you play any instruments?
I remember we have talked about doing that, I think it's wonderful, but it hasn't happened so far. I get weekly piano and music theory lessons at school, but I am concentrated on singing for now.
Aksel, I like all three recordings of 'Vien con nuova' that I've heard on YT, but this is my favourite. Ana Quintans' version is too fast, although her ornaments in the repeat section are amazing. Maria Keohane's is very good, but I prefer to hear it sung by a male voice. The only thing that I think you might have been able to do better is to have sung with a less bright and happy tone in the outer sections, where - unlike in most warlike arias from this period - the text presents a negative view of war: "Wicked fate, angry at me, insults me with another horrible war". Arsace is not jumping at the chance to beat up his enemies, but resentful that he has to leave his home and Statira to risk his life and those of his men in battle. Maybe this is one problem with a treble singing 'Vien con nuova'; they might not be physically capable of producing a suitably hard and bitter tone in the outer sections, or have not been taught to produce such a tone, as it is seldom required in the music that trebles usually sing. It would be interesting to hear the aria sung by a castrato (for which Albinoni composed it), as castrati reputedly did have that type of sound. That said, your voice is perfect for the middle section, where Arsace is thinking fondly of Statira. I am not criticising you here, but rather just making an observation. I know that a singer can only do so much with the voice that they have (and you can do far more with yours than most singers!) You were right to perform and record 'Vien con nuova', and please keep singing it. Did you sing it when you toured North Norway this month? I would love to hear a recording of it from then.
I heard you sing it in Sweden last month, and I thought your voice did sound 'harder' in the outer sections than it does here. Please, keep singing that awesome aria :-)
Why bother to put on RUclips such a bad and blurry video ?! It is so unfair to Aksel, the greatest treble singer in the world today. Respect his talent. This is a strong message to RUclips from one of the most passionate fan and admirer of this artist....
Thilo von Watzdorf - The video is very good and HQ. RUclips may be very slow at times. The default Auto Quality mode can downgrade the picture down to 144p. You can adjust the quality from Auto to 720p or 1080p, but you may have to wait for buffering (white line progressing) Or you can download the video, up to 1980x1080, 149Mo, and watch it afterward. (and keep this gem!) Agreed with "greatest treble singer" of today, if not more...
@@influencer8757, indeed. I was a boy soprano with an inherent coloratura range that was passed down through my maternal grandmother. People praised me whenever I sang, but after puberty came, that voice suffered. Being a sopranist countertenor yielded mockery and pushback. I can still sing soprano falsetto; however, it's loud and shrill. There were no video tapes I could locate with my thirteenth year and earlier to compare, or, just to listen. I am literally unable to remember what those musical days were like at all. Disappointing.
@@jacobcarpenter3744 < I appreciate it very much to get to learn about your experiences and it is in fact very important, especially to me who is trying to doing research in all these theoretical matters concerning the boy's voice, and also what consists the defining criteria for a young artist and what would be the optimal as possible development measures to be taken for those who are all individuals and individualists. The human society needs them, and the relationship artistsociety is ever complicated. Please write to my email taiculture@gmx.net in case that you have some further interesting thoughts which do not necessarily belong into this public messenger. To think that Albinoni was famous for being an _opera_ composer in his lifetime. Can you believe it? Of course, it may have been very expensive to print an opera. But who threw away the manuscripts of most of Albinoni's operas? Why not deposit them in a library? I have always liked the oboe concertos by Albinoni, as a trumpet player myself I listened many times to Maurice Andre's rendition of the Opus 7 no. 3 in B flat major. It's the best. But to find out that Albinoni put his best effort in his operas! How could this heritage have been destroyed? What are we going to do next? Is somebody going to bomb the Parthenon? Yeykes. Leo Depuydt
Well Leo, we Brits got the Ottoman Turks to vandalise the Parthenon so that we could have the Elgin Marbles :-( From what I know of the Baroque period, opera was considered a short-lived, throwaway art form. Most operas ran for one season only, after which the composer would write a new opera for the next season and never re-stage earlier ones. You say you are a trumpet player. I would love to hear your opinion of Mark Bennett, the lead trumpeter in this video? He has a stellar reputation in Norway. Best wishes, John
I looked up Mark Bennett and listened to a couple more recordings. He has quite a career. Very strong playing. Good to hear that he is so successful in Norway. I myself stopped playing 30 years ago. I was never a professional but could once play all of Haydn's trumpet concerto on an E-flat trumpet by heart for a youth contest with Andre's cadenza. In retrospect, I could have studied diaphragm control much better and I kind of regret that. My Selmer B-flat trumpet is hopelessly oxydized. In the last year or so, however, I have placed my Bach 1.5 mouth piece on my desk and blow on it occasionally (does the trumpeter Alison Bolsom have a 1.25? It looks like it on RUclips videos). It is around the time that I stopped that the natural trumpet became de rigueur in baroque playing. Edward Tarr played an important role. I am always curious whether baroque trumpet players had the little holes on natural trumpets to make for more stability. I need to do more research. Some trumpet players make a point of placing their hand on their hip to indicate that they are doing without the holes. Best, Leo
If you look at the portrait of Bach's trumpeter, Gottfried Reiche, you'll see the instrument is spun into a tight coil like a small horn. The intonation holes are a modern addition, since the overtone series the natural trumpet uses occasionally only slightly resembles modern tuning. I suspect this was to supress the "he's playing out of tune" complaints of the early HIP era.
Thanks for the clarification. I was a aware of the picture of Reiche (who died the morning after suffering great distress at a performance of I think maybe of the top of my head one of these weltliche Kantaten maybe BWV 215). There is a performance of Brandenburg II by Masaaki Suzuki at the Library of Congress and co. also on RUclips and the trumpet is also coiled. But I am not sure the trumpeter is moving his fingers. I think so. A coiled one with holes? I do hear a couple of out of tune notes. Without the holes, some trumpeters were (and are?) adept at tensing the lips so that the tone is half higher or lower. But difficult to learn to play the natural trumpet both ways. But I did not know that the holes were to correct specifically the distortion. Leo Depuydt
Natural horns have the same characteristics of course, but the player can stuff his fist up the bell to change the intonation, althought that changes the timbre too. There's a video of the Bach Christmas cantata on RUclips by Harnoncourt, where in Cantata 4 he has the horns play without changing the intonation, and you can hear the wolf tones growling occasionally!
Hello Aksel. I would like to ask you if you are ever touring America? If not, please consider this. You have a god-given talent that many, including myself, would be delighted from listening to in person. Also, I'd love to get a photograph with you to send to my friend, as she feels you are quite nice on the eyes. Thank you, Aksel~ The Thavage
It would be nice if Mr. Rykkvin could sing some arias by Pergolesi, the greatest composer of music ever (just my opinion), and by Leonardo Leo, the second greatest composer of music ever (just my opinion) before his voice breaks so that we have it for the record. The closer to the breaking the stronger the voice. Leo Depuydt
Aksel has just posted two videos that he recorded this month, and you can hear how much his voice has matured even from this video (recorded in January 2017).
Aksel has posted a recent video of 'Lascia ch'io pangia' on RUclips, and there is a clip from his tour of North Norway on Facebook: facebook.com/akselmusic/videos/1488543871216894/ Enjoy, John
This is really very fine! Askel, I have followed your youtube output and enjoyed it all, esp, your development as an artist and singer. In this music, your fioriture seems to have even more definition and punch than before. It reminds me of Marilyn Horne, who sounded at times as precise as a sewing machine, though so much more artistic! Your voice also sounds bigger and darker and your breath control is great here, as you take all the phrases without a breath, as written. I look forward to hearing more! Keep up the great, great work!
Thank you, very kind of you! When I recorded this half a year later, last month, we added ornaments, so I think the upcoming CD version will be better :)
Thank you. Yes, I started taking singing lessons about six years ago. I get several singing lessons every week through the choirs and the classical music talent program I attend. Singing lessons are absolutely necessary if you want to sing classical music!
What is that instrument behind Aksel... I hate to call it a piano, I know it isn't. But I don't know what it is. The instrument to it's immediate left, is that part of it? Or is it also a separate instrument?
Ever since I stumbled on Aksel Rykkvin on youtube, watched and listened to his marvelous voice every day for more than a year. But I stopped watching him after I saw him in a Puccini (?) opera lounging around the stage in jeans and then smoking a cigarette leaning on a pillar! I hope his father Rikard Rykkvin will come across my remark and stop his son from taking part in such ghastly performances.
Dear Stephen Chin, I am sorry to hear this. This Tosca production by the controversial director Calixto Bieito is maybe not for every one, but it has been well received by most here in Norway, especially by those who watch the whole performance tv.nrk.no/serie/hovedscenen-tv/mktv16013517/03-09-2017 Bieito re-imagined the Shepherd boy role in Tosca as "Eduardo", the young but already rough mafioso-like son of the main villain Scarpia. For this role a cigarette was an effective prop, but I can assure you this was stage smoke with no damaging substances, I would never allow anything else! Best wishes, Rikard Rykkvin
This very bad video quality, should not be shown on RUclips. The people who manage Aksel should make sure that the quality on RUclips is as good as this magnificent singer. I can not show it to many of my friends who love trebles and barrock music. Very disappointing! BUT maybe it is my bad connection to RUclips! Normally I can receive Aksel's video very clearly.
The video is in HD and extremely high and professional quality video and technique. I don't like the high angle, as it takes away the ability for us to see Aksel's and the orchestra's emotions and playing, and an amateur video was cleverly stitched in so that we could at least get a better view of them. But, the quality of the youtube video is spectacular. I suspect it's your computer. It is most definitely not the video itself.
The recording this time was done with two amateur cameras from different angles. It is great when a professional tv team is there to do the filming, but of course that is an exception.

I think you are right! I will think of this the next time I sing it.
I heard you sing it in Sweden last month, and I thought your voice did sound 'harder' in the outer sections than it does here. Please, keep singing that awesome aria :-)
Ааааааа, оооооооо.......!!!!
You can adjust the quality from Auto to 720p or 1080p, but you may have to wait for buffering (white line progressing)
Or you can download the video, up to 1980x1080, 149Mo, and watch it afterward. (and keep this gem!)
Agreed with "greatest treble singer" of today, if not more...
ANY record is better than NO record
@@influencer8757, indeed. I was a boy soprano with an inherent coloratura range that was passed down through my maternal grandmother. People praised me whenever I sang, but after puberty came, that voice suffered. Being a sopranist countertenor yielded mockery and pushback. I can still sing soprano falsetto; however, it's loud and shrill. There were no video tapes I could locate with my thirteenth year and earlier to compare, or, just to listen. I am literally unable to remember what those musical days were like at all. Disappointing.

I appreciate it very much to get to learn about your experiences
and it is in fact very important, especially to me who is trying to doing research in all these theoretical matters concerning the boy's voice,
and also what consists the defining criteria for a young artist and what would be the optimal as possible development measures to be taken for those who are all individuals and individualists.
The human society needs them,
and the relationship artistsociety is ever complicated.

I AM INTERESTED ;-)
(a rare chance for interview)
Yeykes. Leo Depuydt
Well Leo, we Brits got the Ottoman Turks to vandalise the Parthenon so that we could have the Elgin Marbles :-(
From what I know of the Baroque period, opera was considered a short-lived, throwaway art form. Most operas ran for one season only, after which the composer would write a new opera for the next season and never re-stage earlier ones.
You say you are a trumpet player. I would love to hear your opinion of Mark Bennett, the lead trumpeter in this video? He has a stellar reputation in Norway.
Best wishes,
John
Aksel has certainly improved, but is best with calmer material.
I need to find these videos. Thanks for the references. I do not really subscribe to channels so far. Best, Leo
Aksel has posted a recent video of 'Lascia ch'io pangia' on RUclips, and there is a clip from his tour of North Norway on Facebook: facebook.com/akselmusic/videos/1488543871216894/
Enjoy, John
Thanks for the RUclips reference. I will find that. But I am not on Facebook and I have no plans to. Leo Depuydt
Hi Aksel Your Voice İs Beautiful
Have you taken singing lessons before?
Bartu Ulusoy Yes, he does sound like he's had a lesson or two 😉
his sound like angel. and my sound like that
I've never had singing lessons before Should i take a singing lesson?
I've never had singing lessons myself, but if singing is what you want to do then I think you should try taking lessons. Good luck with it!
Bartu Ulusoy He's had several years of professional training.
Possum That is a harpsichord, predecessor of the piano. Not sure what that other thing on the left is.
Maybe a positive organ (angled with the harpsichord), and unused here.
Yes, it's a portable organ, angled at 90 degrees to the harpsichord.
Aksel, yes Cecilia Bertolucci has plenty of emotions, but she does not create the same emotions as you do when you, in most of your recitals.
Maria Keohane version is fantastic also

Adjust your quality settings. Even at low settings, I am not having trouble, so your internet connection may be off today.
It is most definitely not the video itself.
same... I would urge the video people to take the recording from even level, if it is possible (not from above)!
The recording this time was done with two amateur cameras from different angles. It is great when a professional tv team is there to do the filming, but of course that is an exception.
Yes you are right, Aksel.
