VERY important difference between these is in the menu of the series 80... it has 3 ways to handle clipping... the default is "soft clip" which is not the same as on the original 1073/84. It allows you to set it to hard clip, which will bring in a lot more distortion when driving the signal. Soft clip won't do that as you are probably aware. Besides that it also allows you to disable that circuit entirely, so you can drive it all the way without gritty distortion and just get the harmonics without clipping.
Everyone always overlooks it and then say the UAD sounds different when the signal is driven. Yup, because its hard clip vs soft clip, and that's a massive difference.

If you work at 441/48K then the UAD 1084/1073 is fine but if you work at higher sampling rates 882/96K then UAD isn't the optimal solution. It is bandwidth limited and causes phase anomalies better known as phase incoherency in the top end making tracks harshly bright while hard cutting the area with a mismatched oversampling filter in both the DSP and Native plugins. I'm not a hater I own UAD hardware and plugins but I also work at 96K for tracking since the bandwidth of my console and outboard gear is similar to the bandwidth of the 96K sampling rate. I personally try to avoid UAD unless it has a mix knob (compressors) as much as possible unless someone sends me a session to mix at 441/48K. I know UAD have put out marketing articles at Sound on Sound about this but its just that marketing! But if you mainly work at 441/48K then the UAD plugins are some the best for those sampling rates. I prefer the Plugin Alliance options for 99% of my work since there is no issues with their bandwidth! Great video by the way. I personally never like the old Neve 1073/1081 top end, I tracked an album on a Neve BCM10 MK2 and it was just too harsh for my taste when recording to digital, but back in the days of tape the Neve top end would be a good way to clean up the mud tape at 15ips or 7 1⁄2ips would have caused! Cheers!

Universal audio sounds better with the guitar tracks

In my control room the UAD sounds way better, that’s the reason when I put it on master bus I said “UAD it’s the one” or something similar hahaha
