Ahh, to be a recording/mixing engineer in 2023!
Dang these console emulations sound GREAT!
Many folks might not hear much of a difference between them, but the sound engineers are grinning ear to ear. 😁
Joe is a consummate pro, and his descriptions of the differences in tonal characteristics are really spot on.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you Dane. We are in good days indeed!! Best wishes brother.
It's really pleasant to listen to Joe, his joy and passion is contagious...
Thank you!
The API sounded the best to me here. Maybe the hi end was pushed a little bit too much but I really enjoyed the clarity on this one.
I love using this one on drums!
Joe Carrell is a great teacher, and a gentleman. I could listen to him all day.
Man the Helios is a very “comfortable” soft polished sound! I actually love it❗Perfect video man
Wow, that Helios is so “gentle” in the highs while still bringing so much clarity. Fascinating..
As usual the API is as brilliantly metallic sounding as ever.
The Neve is strong yet creamy. Like lows, mids, and highs all spread like icing on a cake.
Beautifully different
I liked the 80 Series on the drums, the 50 Series on the guitars and the 69 Series on the over all mix.
For me it is the other way around, but I get where you are going with the Helios :-)
@@philippgrunert8776same. I love me some api on drums and Neve on guitars.
On my current African Drum ensemble piece , I am using all three of these Beauties . . . ! . . . Someone mentioned online about how good the 50 and the 80 work well together . . . So, I've been starting with the 80 and following it with the 50 on the same track, with with great results. . . & I just pulled out the 69 again today . . . Joe's video is spot on . . . I was finding myself cranking the 69 today, and feeling self conscious and confused at at how high I was boosting and how good it sounds . . . Yet it does say Passive , right on the console . . . It's good to see some reassuring perspectives on the inherent natural behaviors of these three amazing consoles !
(-;
The 69 one sounds the best for me😮😮❤
Just a fantastic overview of these Lindell Channel Strip plugins, Joe. Overall I liked the Lindell Audio 69. But at the same time I see the power of the others for certain types of coloring. From your Plugin Alliance video a few years back I started using the SSL channel strip plugins. Now, I'm going to dive into these Lindell Channel Strips. I did not realize how powerful they are. I so appreciate your time on this. Love your teaching style :)
Thank you Rick 🎉🎉
Massive amounts of inspiration, as always from Joe Carrell, excellent mixer/producer! Great job Plugin Alliance! 💯
That's really cool feedback. Thanks for the great support and enjoy your sessions!
Thank you for watching!!
Like always... Joe Carrell is a great mixer/producer and a great entertainer. I really love his videos. And on top I love the three Plugins he talks about. This made my day 😊
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 🎉
Joe, your walk-throughs are the BEST. Layman’s terms with just enough tech jargon to know what’s happening to the sounds. You’re a great teacher for simpletons like me, haha.
Thank you man!!!
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell nah, bro. Thank YOU!!!
Thanks for taking the time again, Joe.
This Helios sounds pretty good, I like the API's relatively clear UI but it shrunk the sound-stage in comparison to the other two. The Neve sounds too mid-cloudy here and it's UI is sub-optimal.
I've got the SSL 9000, Focusrite and console_N and I would buy some more, but PA UIs are so often rushed and/or wasting much space. This Helios has fonts on top of each other (see: comp threshold) and the switches look like 1/4" jacks with a ball bearing stuck to the edge. A great big fader that rarely gets use, and the Neve's got space-wasting knobs 20x larger than the text that you actually need to be able to read.
Also, this is a nearly 25-minute long video but each audio example is rarely heard for even as much as 10 seconds ... at least use some text instead so we can HEAR things without constant interruptions saying the same things we've already heard 1000x in hundreds of other channel strip videos.
Ohhh mr Joe, always glad to hear your perspective. Having fun indeed.
Thanks for watching!
@@InTheMixJoeCarrellThank you for the information and perspective into crucial issues, im referring to all of your videos as a sum.
Good to see you again, Joe! I have greatly appreciated the first two channel strip videos you made for P.A. and I think they are some of THE MOST HELPFUL for people who are trying to learn about the purpose of, and the differences between, these amazing console emulations.
VERY helpful, mate. Very helpful.
Well done, Sir.
😎👍👍
I just watched a bunch of videos on the 69. This was by far the best video. Thank you!
In 14:03 Joe forgot to engaged high shelf on Neve but increase the amount. Jokes aside, seeing Joe before mixing or recording, gives me lot of inspiration.
Great comparison Joe. The video and explanation really showcased each of the channel strips. I have the 80 currently and look forward to mixing some new recordings through it.
Thank you man! Best wishes
The guitar came to the front nicely with the API it sounded good. Liked the low end on the helios.
Joe rocks! Love your content and the way you explain things. Thank you!
Thank you Michael !
Love these videos from Joe Carrell!
The 80 gives such a good bass, my favorite out of 3 for this track.
Love it! Nice shoot out and I really needed to hear those back to back with someone who knows how to do a shoot out! Thanks so much Joe!!! Nice job.... love your passion!!
I have waited for this since the SSL video
Thank you Phillip!
Great comparison Joe. Thomas Lindell is on another level imho. & those Plugin Alliance folks aren’t half bad themselves 😉☀️
Thank you Patrik. Best wishes 🎉
Love this guy! Great comparison too.
Great as always Joe!!!! Love your videos 🤘
Thank you friend!
Excelente, Gran review.
3o. Lindell 50, muy áspero en los altos.
Thanks for the nice feedback and sharing your experience!
Thank you for watching
I’ve been a big fan of the 50 and 69, but I really need to try out the 80 too. We’re lucky to have all of these tools at our disposal. Thanks for the great demonstration, Joe!
Yes we are indeed!! Thank you Dustin
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell You DO need to try the 80, too!
As always great stuff from Joe, really well explained, great enthusiasm for his craft…
Thank you for watching Murray!!
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell my pleasure Joe, as always!
Great tips and tricks! Really enjoyed it!
Thank you for watching!
I have the Neve, I have the API, I gotta get the Helios. Love your plugins. Joe does an awesome job explaining the feeling you get from each🤘
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you for watching Arlo 🎉
Fantastic explanation on all the 3 channels strip model great sound live the 69 on the mix
Thank you for watching!
@@InTheMixJoeCarrell Nice video boss
Thanks Joe for the comparison! The Series 80 is my go to plugin.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching!!
Another great video Joe! I used the 69 on a traditional country project a few days ago. Have mercy. It was smooth and tasty. Especially in the roundness of the low end. But, I have been stuck on the SSL 9000 J. I’ve been doing entire mixes with it on every track. Do love the API on rock guitars. And country if it has that bite.
Thank you!!
I adore that 80 series. Gotta REALLY stay in control of the low end with it though; it enjoys serving up lashings of beef, and the problem is that tasty beef gets irresistible! Sound is beautiful though, it's not "tubby" but it's exquisitely vintage. Certainly a "Neve guy" myself though have the BX Amek 9099 and SSL strips which are very good, but I think with the Lindell 80 and 50 series here you'd be able to make basically anything sound amazing. The bus plugins also for that saturation flavour plus the TMT are a SUPERB addition.
In fact with those two strips, a good graphic EQ for anything needing surgery, a decent bus comp and something in a limiter you'd have a wonderful home studio!
glad i bought Lindell 69 (nice!) eventhough didn't touch it because i forget
now i would tried it more in depth!!
Always pleased by your videos Joe. Thank you kindly! So far my favorite BX_console strip is the Focusrite SC. It sounds expensive!
Thank you Ken! I use the Focusrite in the exact same way. It’s my “elegant” maker
Interesting to hear Joe use different CS,s for different effects (oohey&gooey). Of course, this means I'll need to add the 69 to to my collection! Cheers Joe.
I completely agree with your assessment of the 69 based on your run-through. I'm probably showing my age by preferring it, but you're right that it is everything we talk about when we talk about analog warmth. I have the 50 but now I'm gonna have to get the 69. Great job for PA and for us fans!
We're glad to hear you like it. Thanks for the nice feedback and enjoy your sessions!
Thank you for watching Mike!
API! That's where is the money in this song. Great mix btw!, as usual
Thank you 🎉
Descriptors that come to mind for me.......
1) Helios 69 = Prestigeous, Smooth, Glue
2) API 50 = Forward, Hard, In your face
3) Neve 80 = Tubby, Pillowy, Hairy
Well done 👊🏼
Yup! Well put:)
Fantastic review!
Thank you so much!
Watching these videos by Joe is always a pleasure and very instructive. I would like to point out that at the 14:00 minute however we are listening to the plugin with the high frequencies not activated as the frequency selector is set to Off.
Anyway thank you for this comparative video and above all for explaining in a simple way some concepts that we would not have other ways to get to know better.
Great plugins, I'm testing these three with a greater predilection for API and Neve.
Love those Joe! Love the Lindell 80 on Ac’s…
Thanks for watching!
I know in context we have to listen and not isolation however when you engage the plugin it seems like the whole mix changes and sounds like you're engaging all of the channels. I hear the difference in the guitar example but also the other tracks change so it takes a second or two for my ears to focus in. I would love to hear the differences in isolation. Most of us I would assume have never had the opportunity to mix or even hear these great consoles in action. So I really couldn't say they sound like the original. I know they sound good but with all of the options today and the great technology they all sound really good. I have all the Lindell and Bx versions and mostly it's a trial and error on which works best for what song. That's the fun of mixing really no two people will mix the same song the same.. Nice video...
Lindell Plugins 50 Series 🤗👍❤
I love Joe Carrell and his videos. The one he did with the SSL models was brilliant. This was another great one. So nice to have those comparisons and insight. However...
As he readily admits, he dialed this mix in on the Helios, then duplicated the settings on the 50 and 80 series. So the Helios sounds the nicest (to Joe and to me at least). As of today 7/20/23, the Helios is $180, while the 80 and 50 are $40. I own all the PA consoles (and probably half the PA products) but I waited for every one to come down to sale price before jumping in. My advice. You don't NEED anything right this minute to make great music. Wait 6-12 months and the Helios will join the 29 or 39 dollar price point.
Thanks for watching !
great explanations hear everything you described great comparisons .the first one hellios I like the 80 series then second one,50 series on drums.
Thank you for watching!
I agree with Joe in terms of treating this parameters more agressively. Hardware units tend to impact the sound much more than software in general, and some console settings for various instruments were very drastic, but gave a lot of character. Don't be afraid to tweak those channel strips more than you'd think.
The 80 has made itself at home in my chains... the soft clipping and the amp 🔥🔥🔥
Thanks for sharing!
They all sounded great. 69 wins for me. Nice combo of clarity and richness/fatness. API was cool and had that clear solid sound but almost a little too separated for me. The Neve richness is so sweet, but almost too polite in this context. I tend to use one strip across a mix to get some commonality between the tones so that it adds up to a vibe. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for your input Aaron. That 69 was soooo good
API amazing on drums of course and great characteristic attack on the guitars, the Lindell 69 I could see it being used on something that as a raw mix needs help gluing it all together in a warm musical way, it also has a very musical eq, but for me the Lindell 80 is my winner. I’ve been mixing an album and have been using it on many tracks.. that nuke button does something so special and can be mixed dry/wet to get the perfect setting and I think it has the best top end of all 3 of these so it’s great on vocals, guitars and pretty much the whole rhythm section I mean you can put anything through a Neve 1073/1084 and it makes magic, it’s the tried and true of analog preamps. I’ve also found myself using the bx_focusrite SC channel strip a lot and love it. The Lindell SBC is a top notch compressor I use a lot as well, drums get absolutely massive using the nuke button on that! I got the all 2022 bundle rent to own a few months ago and it does not include the 69 series so I can’t justify spending $150 on it when I got hundreds of plugins for ~$5 each but still I’m so impressed with all of Plugin Alliance’s tools! I studied production at Berklee on mostly all stock plugins so this is like a whole new world to me! I did get the Neold U2A (obsessed with LA2A comps and I think this is the best PA has, great demo on that btw Joe) and the new Masterdesk pro during summer of sound with the monthly vouchers and those 2 are incredibleee! Thank You Joe!
Thank you Max 🎉
Fun was had.
API for punch and clarity. Use it for distorted guitars and drums a lot. Neve for vocals - it's so warm rich and round. Nice bottom and top. Haven't tried the Helios yet.
If you are a fellow mega bundle owner try it!! It’s 🔥 Thank you for watching.
Love them , use them , always having the same excitement :P
you really turned me onto the api with this one
The 80 has been my favorite for a few years because of how silky that top end is BUT... hearing it after the API, it sounds muffled because the API has that fast high end snap. Especially on the snare.
I'm going to have to do a back and forth with the 80 and the 69. Great video Joe!
Thank you man!
I use the Lindell 80 along with analog BAE pres on most tracks. But I recently got the API channel strip from UA and it's been nice experimenting on drums, bass, and electric. I want the Helios most of my favoriterecords were done on the Rolling Stones mobile truck, but I'll probably wait til it drops in price and can use my monthly code
Thank you for watching
I heard the Helios used transformers from 65% nickel, just like the Sound Techniques consoles. Back then. The Lindell 80 series are great to create a sound with beautiful grid and still have that great High End on top. Cool stuff. Even I'm an SSL guy. But on certain material I switch strips. Love the PA bundle!
Good stuff Joe! The Helios may be my favorite on this, although I am a Neve lover. I like putting the 80 across my mix bus sometimes, especially since it has 7.1.4 output setting to put on my Atmos bed. I am looking forward to having that option on many more plugins in the future.
Lindell 80 nowhere sounds like hardware Neve buddy.
@@abhisheksrivastava3787 I know. That is why I have Heritage Audio Neves that do. The 80 works sometimes when I am in the box for Atmos. It's not bad. But thank you for your profound enlightenment, Captain Obvious.
Thank you Daniel!
mmm, how do you get the 80 to work in 7.1.4? It will only do stereo here. Nuendo 12/PC. If its a ProTools/Mac thing, I'll pass the info to a friend who would appreciate it. Thanks.
@@paulrucker1889 I am working in Pro Tools with Dolby Atmos Renderer, I am able to insert the 7.1.4 version of the Lindell 80 on my bed setup, which is an excellent feature. Hopefully more plugin companies will start doing this. PSP Aural Comp is also very useful in this capacity.
I used to only use the 4ke, but lately you would find the 50 on my drums and guitars
I'm in the middle of the video, I do love how you present analog style plugins. But it looks like around the 14:00 mark, the 80 has the high filter turned off.
Great!!!
Still prefer the Lindell 50 Series for rock styles. I run it on every track. EQ is forgiving. Less work on the 2bus. The ‘69 is still a ?
To my ears rhe api souded the best. Not that the others did not not sound good. I like that api "colour:
Loved this Joe. Need to pick up the Helios. Curious what the BUS compressors on the ends are contributing.
Cool, let us know how it works for you!
You don't have the high end EQ 'on' with the 80 series on drum overheads.
helios: old school attitude, big, thick, loud
neve: old school mellow, round, butter, smooth
api: 80s/90s "clean" sound, cd sound, punchy, focused, sharp
That snare drum is louuuuuuud
"Here's the track in its raw form, as recorded"....proceeds to play track with a 100% sample-replaced kick and a heavily sample-reinforced snare 😂
Eye opening. Like you said, with this song Helios all day insert all adjectives. If "crisp" was a sound the API has it to me. Neve is a nice balance. I picked up on the the low end of a Neve in the last couple months and actually might not care for it for what I do but it can work.. Would you call SSL E,G, or J "transparent" compared to these?
Not at all! That SSL midrange is aggressive punchy as - - - -..😂😂 I made a video of all the Brainworx SSL channels side by side. That one is great if you haven’t seen it. Not cause I’m great by the way, but because SSLs are 🔥🔥 thanks for watching!
The 50 sounds like american rock to me. I will be using it for mixing a glam metal band soon. The gate and EQ and guitar, the preamp and comp on the bass and drums - this thing just brings the sauce of the american 80's.
Cheers and enjoy your sessions!
@InTheMixJoeCarrell At 12:14 you accidentally left the Neve channel strip on for the kick during the demos for Helios and API!
Unlike mixing on a real console, we can of course select one console plugin per channel. So let's say, I want to feature a rhythm guitar, I might take the Lindell 50 here. But I might push back the organ with a Lindell 69. Have you guys negative had negative experience in combining different console plugins within a mix? And if so, what is negative about it?
Never anything negative whatsoever. I do it all the time and it’s a BLAST!
I think the hi end jumped bc you have the 1st plugin high on 10 and the api has its mid band on 10 as well? they aren't flat when you 1st engaged?
I don’t think I understand the question however, they are all set as similar as possible and their frequency choices and boost amounts
Hey Joe question, my kids went to a studio with an API and the mix they got was very punchy and the sound had depth and was big. While there was some things I did not like, I did like the quality. Is that really possible to do In the box? I am trying to figure out how to get that sound. DO I need to have a specific converter and or what can hinder that type of quality ITB?
Hey Shawn thank you for watching! I do love a real analog console without a doubt. BUT I think we do now have the tools ITB to give that same vibe convincingly enough that it is more about user preference to me. There are subtle differences but both are great in their own way and the end user will never know and care what we used as long as it’s great
Got You. One more quick question please. Do you use the Bus plugin on all your bus inputs from channels such as on on the drum bus, keys bus, vocal bus ect? Or would it just be on the stereo bus? While I know we can do it in the box and there are custom mixer builds, which would be faithful to most Neve or API configurations? Love your channel. Thanks for feeding us audio goodness.
@@Shawneverette hey good question. I do use some type of transformer or tubulation on all my sub groups as well as the stereo bus! Whether it be the console pres or other saturation pieces like Black Box etc, I do add some texture most often
Thanks so very much
How about chaining the Helios into 69, or vice-versa to get the best of both worlds???
I was about to give you 8 thumbs down, then I realized I turned the playback speed down on an earlier video 😂😂😂…yeah it beautiful after I fixed that 😂😂
Hahaha. Thanks for watching Damon.
I thought I saw that the Lindell 80 high shelving band is in "off" position 🤔. For example in 13:52

@@InTheMixJoeCarrell oh right! thats BRainworx sold by PA! I have 50 & 80 now will get the 69 Helios! Great demo Joe. Thanks alot!
69, warmth no excessive high end
50 , most high end but too much of it for my taste for that music that you've had
80, little muddy, too little top end
but ...then ...all this can/will be changed by mastering....so it really depends
all in all great job....maybe you should do more of that switching between consoles, on different styles,....and like you've said,...maybe less talking :)
I love all your videos and what you do and what I'm going to say is with lots of respect and the knowledge of ergonomics.
The monitor is too far from you for its size and too high. I can see that also on your neck in this side view video.
Bring it to where the lexicon larc is, that would be closer and lower.
You want your eyesight when you look straight to be horizontal with the top part of the monitor that is also a bit tilted to be vertical to your sight. Your head remains straight and only your eyes move a bit downwards. The distance depends on the size of the monitor.
In the worst case that has to stay there, get a bigger monitor.
I doubt it will make a difference to the Yamahas.
Thanks for watching Peter 🎉
Nice comparisons, but how about in practice.
That’s a real world example of just how different each circuit sounds when set the same. So in every day work, you can use that knowledge to craft a mix that has desired outcome. Best wishes!!!

how have you guys not recruited "mixing with mike" to do videos like this. companies make the weirdest oversights.

BIG LIKE FROM "ISRAEL: !!
For whatever reason, the API to me sounds ''plastic'.. as in manipulated, artificial... it takes my focus away from the vibe and the parts. of your fine track. In the proper context, i guess that could work but the Helios: sonic caramel as the Nieve. Desert island strip: Helios.
There’s no wrong answer since we all hear differently. The 50 Series on a big dense rock mix plays nicely on the 2bus and has never sounded fake or plastic, especially with API type pre circuits.
I really want to like the Helios type ‘69 flavors but I’m just not hearing it the same way others have described it.
I also enjoy most of the music made on real Helios Consoles. Maybe I will give it a shot when it goes on sale.
Remixing something with demo plugins is too time consuming.
Correct it’s pushed too hard to match the setting that worked on the Helios. But dialed in specifically on the 50 it’s great for punch and clarity. Thanks for watching man
The API was upping the impact of the drums here at the expense of the keys and other rhythm parts losing a lot of their space and size.
always good speaker!Watch every your video! I love neve) High end is fluffy.Sorry for my bad Eng.With love from Crimea)
