- Madlib is one of the most prolific and acclaimed producers to ever work in music. Through his various projects over the years-from Madvillain to Quasimoto-the musician pretty much changed the way sampling works in hip-hop.
Now, in a special called Madlib’s Medicine Show, Noisey follows Madlib-with the help of Egon at Now-Again Records-as he meets one of his favorite and often sampled Ethiopian musicians, the legendary Ayaléw Mesfin. Trust us. This is something you don’t want to miss.

True story: Madlib and OhNo used to be my next door neighbor in Oxnard when I was young. I used to go to their house and play video games with OhNo. I had no idea that they made music until I was in high school when Lootpack came out with an album. Crazy because Madlib is my favorite producer ever!! And his rapping ain’t too bad too.

I’ll never forget about being at that show. It was profound. So incredible to see him open up the way he did. And Madlib’s show afterwards was amazing. Did the whole show on an iPad. How f*cking cool. The one and only Mos Def showed up, too.

3:44 I love how in some interviews you can see Madlib making a beat in his head.
Just noticed that. I do the same thing, think its common for people who play with drums alot
Its a thing us drummers do most of the time
Lol madlib getting fed the sweet bread at the end was wholesome af
Watching Ayaléw tear up in front of the crowd was really powerful shit. Glad something as unexpected as this could come about.-
Ethiopia STANDS UP! Tears in my eyes watching this... Thank you Noisy... Thank you.
Wow this is one of the best videos I’ve seen in a while. Extremely powerful!!!!
0:54 "know how i mean....KNOW HOW I MEAN" I don't know why I died laughing at that.

Yo, funny af lol
Think I could watch madlib stand at a bus station for 45 minutes not talking and still be influenced by his mannerisms
Ethiopia has some of the best jams, check out mahmoud ahmed, crazy good jazz
Checkout malatu astake
also check out the song 'wede harer guzo' by hailu mergia and the dahlak band

at 10:29 I'm crying yo. This world is crazy. This man, hasn't performed in decades, and now he gets a reception like this. But the weight on his heart must be so heavy. wow
absolutely heart-wrenching when he talks about being locked up and forced to stop performing.
pretty strange how the channel is led by people who like the ideology who did just that...
someone gotta say it.
3:30 madlib drumming on the low, hah i love that, he cant stop loving in it
It's crazy because madlip put me on so many soul jazz blues artists
The Love/Hate (mostly Hate) relationship between Madlib and Quas is legendary.
This really gave me an insight to the history a sample can hold. Thank you, Noisey, Egon, and Madlib.
beautiful stuff right here. "Music is a universal language". Those words are so true.
Unity is a fundamental of Hip Hop. If the music isn't bringing people together and bridging gaps it isn't Hip Hop. So thankful for this piece! Thanks!
Madlib is one of my biggest inspirations. He should have his own series on here.
2 minutes in and I already need this to be an ongoing series
I respect madlib so much as a musician. His blue note record changed my musical life as a youth !!
Madlib has now become one of my favorite producers ever. His beats are so good and I’m really glad he uses the music as an instrument itself.
Interviews like these is gold. This hits the spot. Thank you for sharing.
thank you everyone involved in this. very necessary.
yooo, Ayalew Mesfin is a real one for dealing with that kind of condemning just because his music was uplifting to the people of Ethiopia. the fact that he still to this day stands for what he believes, it fucking inspires me.
Also, its really dope to see Madlib geeked over this legend. im geeked over Madlib myself. Him and Kankick are like my number one inspirations when i started doing music 10 years ago. I hope to one day meet them. hopefully this music I do takes me there someday.
Jah bless to you & yours Ayalew! also Jah bless to Madlib, Egon & Noisey!
This is the best thing noisey has put out!!! Thank you for showcasing this music!
I really hope this becomes a regular series. This was brilliant, emotional and inspiring
He's so rare I'm surprised he's still alive. Legend.
He is our legend that deserve more which he didn't and it heart me to see him the way his life is going we Thank you for all the good memories Ayuya we love you and wishing you a long life. And Thank you to you guys too.
This video just blew my mind, I was at that show I feel very lucky to have witnessed all that. Also Mos Def came out that night with madlib. I'm glad this was posted to learn more about that show.
This was a beautiful show to attend. Glad I was there to see it all unfold.
Extremely well done. Thank you for sharing these important stories that very few people are.
Thank you for this segment!
This is one RUclips’s best videos. Seriously, so many aspects of life incorporated into this short but informative segment
This is awesome! I love learning more about samples already so it was cool to see major artists encouraging it. You really find a lot good music that you've never would have heard unless you researched the samples.
Greeting from ETHIOPIA. Much respect for recognizing the creator of the art.
Thank you for introducing me to this man. I'm currently tracking down his music. Incredible video.
Fantastic!! Bless and positive vibrations to all. 🇪🇹🇬🇧🇯🇲
thank you noisey... this is a real treat!
this was so BEAUTIFUL brought tears to my eyes THANK YOU Madlib Egon And AYALEW MESFIN!! GOD BLESS ETHIOPIA!
GOOD STUFF MAN!!!!!!! For people that knock sampling it helps bring back forgotten or people never heard of musicians and opens up a brand new world to people. Peace!!!!
Being from Ethiopia and being a massive madlib fan this right here hit so hard. Thank you Noisey. Thank you Madlib and Stones Throw records. Much love
One of the most incredible videos I've ever seen. Despite the language barrier, you can see both of them on the same wavelength. Watching him on stage towards the end was heartwarming
Incredible. To see how moved Mr. Mesfin was onstage and then for him to still be so good! And that he preserved all that music, and now Madlib can use it. Amazing for everyone involved. This is the way to approach sampling and reissuing music, by the best in the game.
You made me care so much about this old man that after just 10 minutes you had me crying♥️ Super cool vid yall'
Such a beautiful and emotional piece. Thank you so much for producing this. It's just what I needed today. Peace to all people.
MADLIB is a 805Legend , much respect ✊
Amazing piece like always... Madlib and his Stones Throw Fam should have a regular series; bringing music to the forefront we aren't particularly up on.
Madlib opened so much for me musically and emotionally with his breadth of samples from different eras. He really goes deep and brings them back to life again in his own way.
It's so sad what ayalew went through as an artist and human being and the corruption ethiopians go through still today. Ethiopian creativity comes so much from their struggles, they are such colorful people love them
Absolutely dope. Madlib is a Universal Descendant Vessel, as we all are... just have to connect and vibrate. Egon is a Visionary with positive ripples, as we all are... just have to accept and project. Transcendents. Thank you for this blessing. Love...
That level of appreciation of life, that's a fucking artist dude. It's hard to be that raw in your music, to be that true to yourself and your experience. I'm so glad I saw this.
Ethiopian music sounds so heavenly and sacred you can tell it is spiritual without even knowing the language
This is what music is all about. It always been spiritual. When you have that feeling and you express it thru music it becomes magic. Keep diggin in the crates and you will always find a tale that has not been told.
This is beautiful!! Needs to happen more often!! It would change the 🌎!! Music is the first universal language!!
The compilation that they mentioned was very influential for me . Shout out Ben the Lazy Player for putting me on.
Deeply moved by Ayaléw Mesfin's words. His difficult life left him with truth and integrity. Simplicity and absolutely no arrogance can be found within him. Thanks Ayaléw.
So much purity in this. Much love
Madlib is a producer god
Mac miller better
This video was important on so many levels. Thank you
This is so beautiful, I almost can’t take it.
Madlib is a legend and the most slept on producer ever!! Lootpack Quasimoto still play the shit out of those albums. And Stone throw is one of best underground labels ever, Peanut Butter Wolf My Vinyl Weighs a Ton is a classic

I'm like man, don't you start tearing up. Cuz Imma start tearing up...
Nice segment...
Noisey. Keep this going.
love love love videos like this. it pains me to see that in this day and age we have almost all recorded music at our fingertips and people still choose to listen to the same handful of artists or watered down manufactured crap. somehow internet/streaming etc had the opposite effect and people got lazier and less curious and just want to be told what to like
postshanna it’s a blessing and a curse
high af right now damn near in tears when homie got the wild applause 😭
Shout out from Denver! That performance was in historic 5 points at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom!

this video made me cry! Art is power, art is love
Legend right there! I grew up listening to him as a kid.
I'm a casual fan of the ethiopiques series and african music in general, but was not aware of this artist. Thanks for sharing and I'll check him out further.
this just make me cry
