Four octaves in 56 seconds. The lead single that never was as they switched to Emotions. Absolute slayage. My favorite breakdown in any Mariah song. "So Cold!" That moment is everything. To Be Around You is my go to, high energy, joyful, party bop track on this album. Upper belts for days.
If this was the lead single and she had to perform that intro every live performance i-- BYE. Either way it was vocal suicide 😭 I can't fathom how her voice remains intact after singing songs of this difficulty, yet write and sing more vocal suicide songs as she went through her career. No one touches her.
Your vocal chords should be made of diamond tough yet brilliant.

Til this day, growing up listening to Mariah Carey, she is THE reason why I've grown to love my singing voice. I was a Bass singer and High school ..and hated that I had to put an intense amount of untrained effort to sing tenor. But MC made me appreciate my natural register! But now I can climb higher with ease. 🙏🏾

This song, the endings of "My All" and "I Don't wanna cry", Vision of Love (Live) BET Performance (2005 or 06), or try singing the intro of "Open Arms" in our register...its so beautiful, my mother told me so. - Low notes are under-rated gems! 💎
Same here. I just mentioned on the Toni Braxton song how I appreciate her lower register in a world that loves for every man and woman to hit the high notes. I also struggle with loving my voice when typically radio and sales show that Tenors are more loved and likely to succeed. I also used to push my voice in unhealthy ways trying desperately to be a Tenor.

Emotions is the best album in my opinion. Every song on this album could've been a hit single, I feel like it's also 1 of the most underrated era's too, the era could've had let's to me. But yea this song is perfection, I hear there was a decision about this song vs. Emotions for the 1st single, and those are perfect 1st single options, but I really wish this song was a single.

Mariah sometimes disguised lyrically sad songs as uptempo happy songs. Her best examples are Dreamlover and Fantasy. You should react to Camouflage from her Elusive Chanteuse album. It’s very gospel oriented and it’s a masterclass in vocal layering.

This was actually originally going to be the lead single but it was replaced by Emotions. The 4 upbeat tracks were co written and produced by David Cole and Robert Clivillés the duo behind C&C Music Factory. Mariah wrote One Sweet Day about David Cole. She was going for a 60 & 70s soul sound for the Emotions album. Emotions was based on Best Of My Love by The Emotions.

At the time the album wasn't well received. She only had a few hits off this 1991 album. I still have it in tape form. There's no reason why anyone can't have favorites that didn't make the radio or Billboard. The album didn't do anything for me when I was 14 and so it got shelved and not played too often.

"The Wind" is another awesome song off of this album. It's kind of a sad song though. It has a Jazzy feel to it.
The C & C Club Remix of Anytime You Need a Friend is arguably the hardest and most vocally complex out of the entire Mariah Carey catalogue. Only true lambs know about this song. You don't really know Mariah until you've heard this song. It is a 10 minute vocal extravaganza, pure bliss. This song alone destroys every catalogue of any other artists past and present.
