Mariah’s rapping is actually 🔥🔥🔥 imo. (Can’t believe I’d say that since she’s like the best singer of all time). The lyrics sound like what would eventually happen with her and Tommy Motolla (her ex-husband). Also please check “All In Your Mind” also from her debut album!

She was she ahead of her time, this is so good, incorporating rap into the song.
I have always loved this song. Listening to it these days remind me of me and 2 of my friends driving into Cape Town, South Africa. We were all excited as we were going to watch Mariah live and we put on this song. Turned up the volume, singing aloud and going crazy. People in the other cars may have thought we were crazy.

Yea "Curly hair'd Mariah" (I call it beginning Mariah lol) is my favorite, anything from her from 1990-1995 is like Gold to me, there's plenty of gold after those years, but those albums released those years have no skip-able tracks. You see I recommend a lot, but I never have reactions for you when it comes to MC, cause I see/know the lambs got you and pretty much everything I'd recommend you either did or did a variation of.....well 1 thing comes to mind, you reacted to "Can't Let Go" live......but the video is 1 of my favorites just from a filming style and her look, she's not playing up her sexiness the same way she does years later and it still manages to be maybe 1 of her sexiest videos to me.
Also I put her rapping in this song above the bulk majority of rappers today, I mean we only really like have this song to base it off of but beyond the boldness of the lyrics, her style & flow, like you spoke of, her energy in her voice here is what it's about and is what's lacking in MOST rappers today, they don't sound motivated or energized or serious the way she does, alot sound like they're on Zoloft lol.
I skip a lot of Music Box's songs, or ar least skip it right to the climax, it is her most generic and boring álbum.

@@alvyandana I know it is her most successful. but it is beacuse that album is generic, it is just pop, it is something mainstream, and everyone can like that kind of music, that is the point of the pop music, it is easy to listen and like. that is why this album is so successful and her more R&B aren't🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️

This is making me cry. Listening to this while watching you as a younger man enjoying this song reminds me of myself when I was in highschool enjoying every single note from every single Queen Mariah Carey song and It greatly inspires me to sing and now write songs too until now her songs makes me cry and lifts me up. As a young guy who had this dream being a best singer that I can be and that many times I would think that what I only wanted to do is to sing to the people and be known as a singer by the world & universe. Everywhere I would walk I would have hee cassette tapes with me and listen to her songs which inaipires me to love music & to be a good person looking forward to being a the best man I can be when I grow up. Queen Mariah Carey is really an angel. It's too much of a nostalgia that I feel now that can't describe. We're facing a New Chapter in our lives with the pandemic and with that I can say that She's really the Queen Of Music & Goddess Of Voice, Songs & Music Forever.

i'm pleasantly surprised you checked this song out, jack! i'm glad you did - this is one of my favorite songs from her debut album and i feel like it really showcases mariah's sassy side and "hip/hop" influences even as her debut era (most people claim that she started behaving more "diva-ish" during "the emancipation of mimi" era and only hopped onto the pop/hip-hop bandwagon during the late 90s) but she has always been this way and this song encapsulates that. love the production, love the lyrics, love the attitude, love the singing, and love the rapping! such a gem from 20yo mariah 💅🏻👊🏼❤

I don't recall Mariah ever speaking out against Prisoner. The track is fire. I do remember them almost selecting the song as a single, but then they went with Someday (which is less dangerously fierce).
It was during the Charmbracelet tour because fans kept making signs for her to sing it. She’d sing little snippets from songs she rarely does live and lambs kept asking for that. She wasn’t having it lmao.

Great reaction Jack. I was just out of high school(17yrs old) when Mariah Carey came on the scene and blew us all away". In the 80's I was a huge Taylor Dayne fan and this song "Prisoner" reminded my so much of "Tell It To My Heart," "Don't Rush Me" and "Prove Your Love" by Taylor Dayne.

It's one of her strongest songs. That's why I love her first album, there was so much diversity on it. She did so many genres and styles on that debut.

This brings back some great memories of her debut album for me. I and some of closes friends we just blown away by her talent . I said then she was the greatest vocalist of all time and she just went on to confirm it . I set bar for her and she just ok I got this lol
