It was Tommy Mottola who actually told her to record the song. She even complimented him for telling her to do so because of the song's huge impact.

She’s been writing her own music, producing her own albums, directing her own videos since the nineties! Today, it’s a big deal for someone to be so heavily involved, but MC has been doing it all for 30yrs!!!
Hero is the song that made me a lamb. It is the song that motivated me when I was young and it continues to do so up until now. Around 1994, at a tender age of 8, it is embedded in my mind and in my heart, Mariah told me that I should be my own hero. I Love You Forever, Mariah!

Regarding the licensing thing she mentioned, a lot of people don't know that this was a game changer for All I Want for Christmas Is You.
In the 90s, her record label was super controlling of her image & catalogue - they didn't want her or her music associated with movies or tv shows.
Eventually she allowed the film "Love Actually," and since then other shows, commercials, and movies to use the song.
In a beautiful twist of events, this catapulted the song into much bigger commercial success than it originally had in the 90s! Its mainstream success has increased over time.
Why was it considered bad in the recording industry to solicit your songs for movies and Television? I feel like Whitney had her biggest success with The Bodyguard? Now, I will agree that Whitney's career afterward was spent mostly in recording soundtracks' such as The Preacher's Wife and Waiting to Exhale so she was never again viewed well by The Grammys or the critics, but aside from that, didn't Allee Willis write the lyrics to The Rembrandts "I'll Be There For You" for the tv show, F*R*I*E*N*D*S (Friends) in 1994? That was another massive songwriting success.
@@johnn.5033 I don't think it was considered bad in the music business, it's just that her & her career were micro-managed by her label. In the 90s, Mariah's image was all about being this songstress - they didn't want to distract from that with movie/tv associations, etc. If you think back - she wasn't really in any commercials in the 90s either. Every once in a while she'd show up in like a Japanese Sony commercial lol but that was it. Looking back it was silly because it could have helped her have bigger international appeal & success. Out of the "vocal trinity," Mariah is the least famous and successful internationally - Celine and Whitney are much more famous overseas, to this day.
@KevenTalks I don't think the least famous, but the least exposed. Everyone knows the name Mariah Carey.
@@iesje88 I can guarantee you that I have family members overseas who have never heard of Mariah Carey, but 100% know of Celine and Whitney. Her fame is much more domestic than international, unlike the other 2 who are arguably bigger overseas to this day (Celine in particular, mostly due to Titanic).

I understood yrs ago from an interview or docu show! That her original reason for singing was she had a lisp It is still there if you listen! She started in a church choir to alleviate any stigma! I love her dearly! God Bless her!

My two favorite songs of hers are "I don't want to cry" and " Emotions". I just love 90s Mariah from her first two albums especially.
To me Emotions is her most quintessial 90's song that showcases who she was as an artist, that and Dreamlover. Vision of Love is just an 80's Whitney-esque that didn't differentiate her enough. And if Mariah had released Daydream three months after she did, it would've been Best Album and Highest selling of 1996 hands down. Celine Dion wasn't going to top Mariah.
