I have a question. How is it that you Jews don't believe in Jesus Christ and what kind of religion has a portion of text from another religion? I respect your religion I'm just curious because I have a Christian upbringing.
@@jazzyland2111 I'm not jewish so take this with a grain of salt, but the tanakh (the holy book you say has a portion of text from another religion) is older than the bible, so you could say the bible is the one who has a portion of its text from a different religion ahah. in terms of not believing in jesus, its not like most jewish people don't believe in jesus, they just don't believe he is the son of god (like a lot of atheists, agnostics and most religious groups). also for future reference saying "you jews" sounds a bit aggressive especially when followed by questions asked in the tone yours are asked. stay frosty
@@jazzyland2111 I hope this question was asked in good faith and Im not about to get trolled, but as it happens, your religion took our text, not the other way around. Judaism came first, as you probably know, seeing that Jesus was a Jew
@lucio6659 you are obviously so ignorant. For starters his use of "Jews" is not aggressive its a word. Second, they believe Jesus is the son of God, but he hasn't come yet.
I'm a reform Jew, adopted from China and raised Jewish, and I've had these struggles all my life, so thank you making this video! I relate to a lot of points in this!!!
Their story is very interesting. But there's also many Jews related to China who are unrelated to the Kaifeng Jews! For example many Mizrahi root communities in Hong Kong and Shanghai stemming from their colonial period.
I'm not Jewish, but I have a lot of empathy. Being Black, I know that any kind of abuse for any group outside of the norm opens up abuse for everyone who is considered outside of the norm. We all need each other and to stand up for each other.
I appreciate you as a Jew so much. I've gotten doxxed online very recently for showing videos of me speaking Hebrew or showing my outfit for the temple. Jewish hate is on the rise and us Jewish people can only do so much. We're only believed by so many people. So other minorities supporting us is often not only warm and fuzzy, but life saving. 😊
Jewish and black activists working together did a lot for the US in the 20th century. Hopefully the same camaraderie between even more groups can get us to a better place in the future.
Once someone said I was homophobic because I am muslim, And someone once said NI HOU, to me, just to be clear, I am from iraq and I look iraqi so I was very confused
My grandfather used to get bullied for being Jewish as a kid, so he became a lawyer specialising in keeping Australian Aboriginal Culture alive. He then became a Judge on the Federal Court to help more people. This just reminded me of him. Thank you for saying this.
I grew up christian and have cousins who are jewish and one of them recently had a batmitzva and I love getting to learn and grow with new cultures. Stay amazing!
Bat-mitzvahs are amazing! I had mine not a while ago and it's just a wonderful thing to go through. It means you're finally a woman after 12 years of living. There are also Bar-Mitzvahs which are for boys at the age of 13.
As an Orthodox Sephardi Jew, I'm so glad that this video exists. In a world where anti-semitism in normalized online and not given much attention, having influencers that millions of people watch spread awareness about the true horrors of anti-semitism is a huge step in the right direction. Thank you!
As a native American who definitely does not look native American, I completely relate to you on feeling worried that trying to appreciate culture is appropriating culture. My mom tried to teach me about native heritage, but since I was so young, I didn't understand most of it, and now I wish I paid more attention. But as I got older, I grew to appreciate my heritage, and now I'm continuing to learn more about my family's heritage. Thank you for the video Illy! It's nice to know I'm not alone in feeling like this :)
As a Native American, it is so nice to have a name to the thing occurring among so many generations and cultures. I never had a name for the phenomenon where a person's family heritage isn't passed down. I've been struggling to reach through Google and pull it back out while feeling like it's minimized around me. We are hoping that classes encouraging those languages can help bridge the gap between the lost heritage and bring us closer to it. Thank you for this spotlight on other religions and cultures. It was ironically a Christian school that encouraged exploration or other cultures and religions. It was incredibly informative and eye-opening. Hopefully other schools can be this welcoming in the future :)
It's a weird experience when you learn about your culture from school, instead of family. My grandfather was adopted by white people. My grandfather was indigenous. Never questioned it. Wasn't until highschool history when I realized he was a victim of the governments attempted cultural genocide.
my experience is probably way too different, but i kinda felt connected to what she said about her dad im chuvash, an ethnic minority of russia and sadly live in russia. though i probably wont be persecuted for that like indigenous american and jewish people, i was never taught my culture or language. the only way i knew i was chuvash is bc my grandma talks to my aunt and mom in chuvash. that kinda put me in this weird limbo, where i wasnt russian but also wasnt "chuvash" enough. and its kind of painful? there's a weird feeling of grief around this for me and idk what to do about it but this perspective makes me fight for you all too, even if i never will live in the us
i also haven't really been able to connect with the Native side of me less so because of family differences and more so because my family never really participated in them. i just really show off my heritage through my features more than anyone in my family
@purgxzur1 - I've noticed more and more people reaching out but never fully realizing the goal we've hoped to achieve. I really hope you find a way to get in touch with your heritage and find a way to pass it down.
@fool4343 - I wish you the best in learning about your heritage and culture. It is a warm fuzzy feeling when you find a way to really connect. I relate to this in the way, we were taught phrases as children: "A-stum my neechie moose." - "Come my little love." I am cree metis
my old roommate is jewish and for the year we lived together we celebrated every jewish holiday and I learned so much! it truly is a beautiful culture and religion with an insanely vast and rich history! If youve never celebrated any of the holidays I recommend finding someone who does and experiencing it!
well, as a jewish israely from birth i vave to say that you are 100% right. but i allso recomand you "celebraitng" the two momorial days we have, becuse the two of them perfectly simbulise the stugles we the juws went throw, from the holocost to this war that never stops, inosent lives of people taken away just becuse they ware born in israel and put in the army. (but allso celebrate all of thye diferent holydays. its fun, we have a lot of them, we literly have a day to celebrate trees, its awsom!!)
Jewish traditional holidays and the Jewish people do make nice deserts and food for their holidays. There was a cookbook in my home ec class that had a recipe only made for a specific holiday. Was difficult to prepare and took several days. It was like a fruit cake I think.
I’m not Jewish, but i am mixed and was raised by my white family. I have always been told i wasnt a real mexican because i dont speak spanish and didnt experience a lot of the same culture others did. This video is an inspiration to ignore what others say and keep trying to connect with my heritage :)
As a person originating from the Muslim community, I fully support you and understand your struggles. Unfortunately, I've been around a lot of disrespectful and hateful Muslims who say the most horrendous stuff said, and I hope I find people who are more accepting of other people...other humans.
i can 100% agree as a muslim living in America. the food limitations, stereotypes, and second looks you get from wearing the hijab can make it hard to fit in with others in public settings.
Thank you so much I’m Muslim and I struggle so hard with all the food limitations with like no pork and also following my religion and speaking Arabic is hard in public because I know speaking like Spanish is normal but also speaking Arabic when barley anyone knows about Arabic language it’s kinda hard not to get weird looks so thank you for all your support and god bless you😊
As a jewish person im sorry if other jews said that, but you shouldn’t think that every jew thinks those hateful things or place that responsibility on all jews. I appreciate you and every religion and I think we are all brothers and sisters in the end :)
definitely brought a tear to my eye. keep your candle lit 💙 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified (...) for the Lord your G*d goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” ( Deuteronomy 31:6 )
I feel so seen, my great grandmother was Jewish and escaped Germany and then raised her children without religion out of fear, most grew up to be Christian when they married. My dad then raised us with the knowledge he knew and we’re ethnically and semi culturally Jewish, I worried I didn’t count because we’re not strict on traditions and my mom’s family isn’t religious at all, it’s really comforting seeing people grow up with similar experiences
You don't need to worry like my mom is a convert because her mom (my grandma)isn't Jewish but her father was she converted to Judaism and she was expected by all. Even the most Orthodox friends of hers and we live in Israel n people are very religious. Also Judaism is not only a religion but also an ethnic group so you still got that Jewish blood in you 🤍🕍. And remember you are Jewish no matter what 🤍🤍
Your vids have definitely given me some motivation to start doing my own storytime content. Granted I'm not an animator, I'm a VTuber/music producer, but I'd love to branch out. I found out a while back that I had Cherokee ancestry all the way back to the Trail of Tears, and hearing you talk about your Jewish heritage makes me kinda want to give doing my own stories a shot. Great work, Illymation! :)
1:18 I feel like this is such an important lesson. I’m Jewish too and I get so tired of people assuming everything and everyone is a monolith. I’ll never forget when I told my friends I was celebrating Passover and that was how they found out I was Jewish. Suddenly I was not me, I was just simply a Jew. It sucks.
I'm not Jewish, I'm Christian but I relate to people assuming everything and everyone is a monolith because I see so many people who treat us like we all act the same like we're all Frollo from the hunchback of notre dame or something when that couldn't be further from the truth it's like they'll take the worst or most hypocritical members of a group of people then treat everyone in the said group as they all act like those aforementioned people, it's infuriating and I get unnecessary hate just because of the religion I follow they'll take the hypocrisy of some individuals and apply that to the religion itself they'll say it's the religion that's hypocritical and not those particular followers of it and I hate it so much it sucks and I'm sorry we live in a world where people do this crap.
I had a pretty good experience with people who aren’t aware or familiar with it. Heck one of them became fascinated by our history, culture and religion.. i was happy to see that some people genuinely care about these things and wish to make the world a better place
You posted on your tik tok about being Jewish one time and as I said then I'm really glad you're open about this there are so many Jewish creators and artists that people don't realize are Jewish it's really nice to see someone openly discussing it Especially when they're not super religious or used to some of the only traditions people recognize
As a Jew raised in a reform and mixed religion household I totally understand the feeling, and I’m sorry for all you’ve been through. Thank you for making this ❤
@@Tactical_TailgaterI think she meant that she was worried that she wasn’t Jewish and was culturally appropriating Judaism. And if you don’t know what “cultural appropriation” means, it’s basically means; the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of a specific culture, ethnicity, religion, which is usually done by someone who isn’t educated on said culture As well as said person usually faces very little discrimination against their own ethnicity and culture which makes it all the more problematic because they’re *appropriating a culture.*
As a Muslim who doesn't know much about other religions, this video really helped me learn about your cultural heritage and understand your problems. Thanks for another amazing video that, as a bonus, helped me empathize with you.
I can’t believe Night by Elie Wiesel was banned. I read it in 8th grade and as my grandparents being holocaust survivors, it hit hard because of the suffering and torture they went through.
yeah we were REQUIRED to read that in my middle school too, especially since i went to a jewish school. so sad to see that it’s banned now…ugh…those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it
we didn't have that, but we had to read Anne Frank's diary in 7th grade. And then a year later a novel written in the form of a diary that hits a lot closer home because it is set in my home town and it's about the yugoslav wars (there was no ethnic cleansing in the city most of the story is set in, there was some pretty infamous ones about 40 km away, plus having close family members who actually lived through the constant shelling then being refugees and actually knowing some of the people in the story hits close to home).
I was shocked that my friends didn’t know anything more than very base level discrimination from WW2. They cried a ton while reading Night in 9th or 10th grade and when I asked why, I was like “Wait. You didn’t know about that?”, and they seriously didn’t know. It felt surreal, because I had heard about assimilation from my Grandparents, so I assumed it was more common knowledge. Then I got doxxed as an adult for being Roma which was really confusing (in American culture at least) and terrifying. Whenever I see xenophobic and/or antisemitic behavior going up I get nervous because it quickly spills over to other marginalized groups as well.
After reading Night I broke down and cried for at least an hour, and I would never deprive that experience from another person, that kind of thing is important. That part of this video also stood out to me as absolutely ludicrous. I've attended "Read Banned Books" rallies more than a decade ago and I thought that at this point banned books would be a thing of the past... Sad to hear that isn't the case
Foxx -god I am so sorry for all of the suffering torturous horrors that your grandparents went through during the Holocaust. No one should have to go through such horrors.
I come from a family of immigrants and this video hit so hard. Sure, my family is pasty white, but because we didn’t practice our faith or live in a “traditional” American way, there’s some things that are just lost. I’m actually moving to Europe next year and I want to connect with my cultural heritage as much as possible. Thank you for this video and all you wonderful people in the comments. Its good to know that I’m not alone
As a muslim, i love learning about other religions and culture's, im so glad you made this good video on awareness during a time where antisemitism is at its peak.
@@nope1904 sorry to say but this is rather rude. learnig other religions and cultures r the same but its if they believe in the othergods should they consider leaving islam since islam focuses on there only being one god.
@goawaybotz as a Muslim, you do have to acknowledge the historical and scriptural antisemitism that runs rampant in your religion. I've had Muslims that will talk about how tolerant their religion is before going on a rant about the evils of jews and how the holocaust was a hoax. Be honest here.
this video came at a perfect time. the crazy amount of antisemitism happening around the world is terrifying, and i'm not even jewish. i'm worried for all my jewish friends, the stuff they tell me about the hate they experience is shocking.
It genuinely is worrying. also it feels like hate for minorities in general is on the rise, I personally think a lot of it is from people being isolated in there own bubbles online and off, so i hope people get out there more and stop being edgelord’s
As someone who is also part of a (different) ethnoreligious group, who doesn't match the typical look, and wasn't raised religiously, I cried so hard hearing you talk about traditions being passed on. These identities, these cultures, these traditions are just as much ours as they are anyone else's. Whatever way we embrace who we are is valid. Hope your journey to learn about your history is a bright one
I’m so happy that you talked about dog whistles, Ive heard some of the things you talked about in the real world and I never would’ve guessed how harmful they are. Thank you for educating me and many others.
By the way i am a secular jew from israel amd i can explain why : " ledor vador " means "from generation to generation " . Dor ( דור ) "means "generation ve( ו) Means "and" but it in gebrew you can say "and" simular to how english use "to" Le ( ל ) in here i think there was a mistake on translation . "le" is actually the word hebrew uses to turn past verbs into verb names and we also use it insted of words like "in" and "for" but ironically enough it does not use as alternative to "from" , the correct meaning of "from" in "(מ)hebrew is "me . So the correct translation will be : "Medor ledor"
@@eyalmeirbarnea8706I can speak Hebrew and read abit and it confuses me how some works are translated to English letters they could be written in a way that would help people pronounce it better imo
I’m not Jewish, but I appreciate what you said in this video. Thank you for being very understanding with everything you said, and in general just trying to make the world a better place.
The even more unfortunate part is that Jewish people aren't the only ones who get attacked/harrassed/forced to assimilate (in the closet) for being a minority or marginalized group. The unfortunate truth is that a good amount of people have to either hide a part of themselves or be harrassed for it by someone. And even if they do hide it, someone could find out somehow. If we lived in a world where only Jewish people were harassed for their identity, it'd be a lot better world. But still incredibly awful and unfair to people who don't deserve it. We don't live in that world, unfortunately. And no one's experience is any less valid because another may have had it worse or is also mistreated. I just hope that one day we can all be more knowledgeable and open about people and identities not of our own and understand each other better. The world then would be much better than we have now. Another thing that makes it hard to call out bad behavior is that hate is often mingled with or disguised as politics or opinions. Some even attempt to make people calling them out or uncomfortable with them as the "actual" oppressors because they're "silencing" them because the person callling them out has major issues with what they're saying. "It's just my opinion bro. Stop being so sensitive and trying to silence me. You can't control my speech because this is 'Murica." Ex.: Trans people requesting to be respected with the right name/pronouns, people asking someone not to say slurs, Jewish people not wanting to be harrassed and asking for someone not to spread misinformation, etc.
I'm hopeful that the world can become much better but it does look bleak right now. As long as we do our best to let love, knowledge, and understanding outstand hate, ignorance, and fear we are doing what we can to make this world better. This can be done in infinite ways and at almost any time. But, they all contribute to the world toll of kindness, respect, and plunging of hate/harm.
as someone who grew up catholic and is now unsure of religion- i have always admired and love jewish traditions. i have so many friends and even some distant family that is jewish. it is so unfair that people would even think these things. I love y’all and stay safe
Did you know that the certain controversial figure that started the war ((I do not dare even name him)) was a Catholic himself and also discriminated Catholics ((just not as much as he did to the Jewish, of course)) but he hated himself the most ((obviously of how the war ended)) so he also hated Catholics because they were not only a religious but also reminded him of himself?
My social studies teacher has been teaching us about different religions, and we are learning about judaism next and i m genuinely excited because i believe in freedom of religion and to help make my friens feel welcomed if they are different and treated differently. I want to learn and understand their religions :>
My dad was also Jewish, and my mom was Christian, and he never really participated in any Jewish traditions, but it doesn't make him any less Jewish. He still wishes his Jewish nephew a Happy Hanukkah, and keeps up with the events and history. I love my dad.
As a person who's culturally Muslim, and recently started doing Ramadan and Eid again, it's great to see videos like these. Even if I don't believe in god, even if I don't do things like hajj, it doesn't make me less worthy of my heritage. It certainly won't make people treat me any differently than people already do! So great to see someone in a similar situation, and maybe you can learn some Yiddish or Hebrew along the way :)
I don't wanna sound mean or anything but Islam and its practices aren't cultural, they're religious, while a jew can refer to a person following the Judaism faith, a person who is ethnically jew, or someone's nationality. Eid-al-fitr and eid-al-adha are Islamic holidays, not a cultural one, anyone can celebrate it, and anyone can fast, but the term culturally muslim is misleading and to my knowledge, incorrect. Additionally, hajj is a religious practice, no non-muslim can go to hajj, as Mecca, where the ka'bah is and parts of Medina, the second most holiest site in Islam, are restricted to non-muslims.
@@Style_224 Yeah, as a muslim I always find Christianity and especially Judaism very interesting, especially their beliefs and history. also, fyi, Islam is the religion, like a muslim follows Islam and a christian follows Christianity, so you wouldn't say non-islam, like you wouldn't say non-Christianity. But keep learning brother/sister 💪
@@confusedcay8845 people aren't culturally muslim, and while muslims should not be harassing people who are learning the faith. However people should understand (and im not saying that anyone here doesn't understand) that Islam is very rigid, is has not changed other than the shia split. and such forms of appropriation, even if coming from a good place, are still frowned upon. And please, do not generalize that you will get hate "crimed" by muslims, this itself is for the lack of a better word, discrimatory or "racist" (again, it's for the lack of a better word, muslims aren't a different race, and anyone can become a muslim, with any skin color).
For someone like illy to go through the absurd amount of potentially traumatic life experiences that she has and still be a bubbly person who makes you laugh at 2 in the morning is just so amazing
This video makes me so genuinely happy. I always love hearing that people i follow or watch are Jewish or have a Jewish lineage, and just hearing their stories of how they embrace their heritage. Judaism is all about belief in the way that as long as you believe in it you can still be Jewish (it's the reason you can ask 2 jews the same question and get the 3 different answers) so the fact that you still identify and how you made this video means so much to not just me but a lot of people.
It still scares me how much hate is in the world. From where someones born, the language they speak, the colour of their skin, their gender and sexuality, their religious beliefs, literally anything! its depressing that we arent passed this kind of stuff yet. Videos like this are super important, and I hope with more people sharing their stories we'll finally be able to move on from all this hate
I know, but if we want change, we must be part of it. Unfortunately, people are mostly resistant to change. But sometimes, people can change. We need more people who aren’t good, but can change to be good.
i’m 13 years old and i’m jewish. i’m the only jewish kid in my school and everybody in my school knows that. there are a few kids who make light of my religion and “joke” about it but it doesn’t always feel like a joke and even my friends are using these dog whistles not knowing how they can hurt. ur videos have always been so important to me and you have made me so happy by making this video because i can relate to so much of it so thank you illy ❤❤❤
I’m also Jewish and I want you to know that you aren’t alone. What you described is [unfortunately] a perfect description of my school life too, I hope these people are able to educate themselves soon!
I’m Cherokee and have gone through this same exact experience and I want you to know that you’re not alone and you don’t have to put up with those people one day soon things will change have hope my brother if you need a friend we are in plenty here
Even though I am an atheist with 0 Jewish heritage, this video genuinely made me cry. I will never be able to understand how people are so hateful towards groups of people doing nothing wrong. People who make you feel less than are disgusting, and frankly, Illy, you are so strong.
As someone who is also Jewish through my father's side (although I'm an active Episcopalian in regards to religion), it makes me really happy to see other people celebrate and embrace their Jewish heritage later on in life. I'm proud of my Jewish heritage, but a combination of not being told too much about it as a child and being raised Catholic means that I sometimes feel guilty for embracing it or bringing it up, with some (typically non-Jewish) people brushing me off with "Well, you're not technically Jewish, so you can't say that you are." Videos like this show how much more nuanced things really are, and that we shouldn't limit ourselves by keeping away from the parts of our heritage that can strengthen bonds, form communities, and educate people.
I thought Episcopalians were Christians. At least I thought Episcopal churches were the one and only sect of Christians that openly support science and LGBT acceptance. You know things are bad most of the other groups don't.
@@rommix0 Ah, I forgot to add a little detail. I didn't misspeak when I said I was raised Catholic. I technically wasn't raised in the Episcopal church, more... alongside it. The Episcopal Church wasn't my mother's religion, nor was it the religion of my school. However, both my mother and I found a welcoming community with our local Episcopalian church, and I went to a lot of its services, probably more than the services of the Church I was actually born into. Once I was old enough to learn the differences between "Roman Catholic", "Episcopal", and "various other Christian denominations," I basically "converted." So you're right, Episcopalians are part of a Christian denomination, I just didn't give the whole story.
I relate to this video. I’m from America but I’m very European. My Grandpa’s parents were from Poland. They didn’t pass down any of their heritage and me and my mom wish they did. I’m now starting to research Polish culture to understand my heritage more! I’m glad I’m not the only one 😅.
In school (I am Jewish) we were taught that in the Mishna, it was written that in cases of danger, lighting up one candle is acceptable. As safety is important
Glad you made this video!! With so many ppl normalizing antisemitism online, Im glad a large content creator can publish a video calling out these problems from their perspective as a jew!!
As a Jewish person who's in highschool, I think I have definitely heard some dog whistles, like with people who use a lot of "dark humor" when knowing I'm Jewish. It does kind of hit me a bit though. This video was very informational, keep it up illy!
Don't let them get away with that-and I don't say this like you're in the wrong or did something bad, but now that you know about these dogwhistles, you can call them out on their bullshit. Tell them that it's fucked up and not cool to joke about, because those kinds of jokes hurt real people.
Also jewish here (and living in israel) honestly whenever i see these dog whistles i just call em out on it and expose them for that. Worked for me pretty well so far
@that1dudewhodrawz Grow that thick skin! Otherwise, you're just going to cry every time someone's words hurt you and only focus on what they say instead of moving on with your life
@@YeoBroYeoBro There's a difference between someone teasing you or saying some dumb shit and then there's harassment and "jokes" based on identity and not so subtle bigotry. @@vwl0780No. Israeli. By the way, I find it interesting how you seem to pop out of every hole every time Israel or Jews are mentioned. This is someone simply stating a fact about themselves on a video about antisemitism. This is not about you
@@YehudiNimol there’s no such thing as Israel. Stating a fact isn’t antisemitism so I’m not sure what you’re trying to get at. You can be a Jew from Palestine, but don’t claim to be from a country that just doesn’t exist.
Israel is recognised by most countries (especially the global important countries like the US and UK). Israel is also more important to the planet than Palestine ever will be. Saying Israel doesn't exist is like saying Taiwan doesn't exist.
Thank you so much, Ily. This was beautiful ❤️. I am an Orthodox Jew and I loved what you said! Even if your mother isn't jewish, you deserve to feel apart of your heritage and culture! Us Orthodox Jews are happy to have you
The video came out BEAUTIFULLY!!! It was an honor and pleasure to peer-review the script for this animation. Thank you for bringing me into the fold, intentionally centering the voices of Black Jews, and debunking the harmful stereotypes that impact our community. Much love ❤
A little detail i noticed, may or may not have been intentional. The neo, well you know, was blond on the head, but not on the chin. He bleached his hair blond so he could be closer to the standard. I don’t know if I’m just filling in, or if that was the intention, but cool detail.
Hey I’m also Jewish. As someone who actually does have dark curly hair and always gets told I “look like a Jew,” among other things I don’t always love hearing, I cannot express my gratitude for this video. Being Jewish is awesome. I’m so sorry you got doxxed, and thank you for making this :)

I’m an atheist but I did recently discover that I’m partially Jewish (according to my dad after taking a dna test). I do want to learn more about Jewish traditions. But I feel disgusted and horrified by all of these hate crimes. I wish you the best.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, (some people call us Mormons, but that name originated as a hateful slur, so we don't really use it anymore) I can sort of sympathize with this. The fact that I was kind of scared to even comment my religion just now might give you an idea of how rough society is on us. People can be so hateful. I remember one time, I went to church with my family, and someone had spray painted a nasty word on the side of the building, because of hateful rumors that have been spread. It doesn't help that there are a couple splinter groups that have some horrible things, who people still associate with us EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM. It really makes me sad, and scared honestly.
As a fellow member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I get what you mean we get such a bad reputation because other families forcing it upon their own children but honestly every religion will have crazy families also being called a cult and people basically making fun of missionaries who are just doing their callings so yeah basically I’m happy there is someone who is a member because compared to like catholics there’s not a lot of people
As a Jew I can relate, it sucks that people spread so much baseless hate against you and others that did them no wrong. I too have personally been accused of multiple genocides, inventing COVID-19, manipulating the US government as well as many other world powers, communism, fascism, 9/11, secret tunnels under New York City, and various other acts which I cannot confirm nor deny I've done. Baseless hate still sucks though ;(
I know its scary knowing that anti-Semitism and bigotry is on the rise and it is, and I know it can be hard to stay hopeful with all of these terrible things happening, but we must remember, the more we educate each other, our kids, friends and family, the more safer we will be since we can recognize and fight against these terrible ideologies. My generation "Gen-Z" is proof of the being the most open and inclusive generation and it shows that things are and WILL change. Evil doesn't win unless Good lets it, and we ain't gonna let it!
Hah. Gen z is probably the most hateful generation to date. We’ve completely fractured into 2 separate groups, one which beleives offense is an inevitable factor in life, and one which beleives it is a scourge that is capable of being decimated.
OMIGOSH!!! I'm also autistic and Jewish!! 💖💕 Trust me, the most Jewish sentence of all time is, "I don't know if I'm THAT Jewish." We all feel like frauds, but that's just part of the deal, isn't it.
Literally. I’m Jewish, but as someone who’s part of a really Jewish community but is like obsessed with t swift and things I feel out of place. I’m proud to be Jewish but scared to let anyone who isn’t a close friend get to know the real ME
I will never understand people who hate people for their religion or race or even stereotype them for stupid reasons. I just respect people for their beliefs and let them be. Do what YOU want with your life, Illy ☺️
lol I love ily and GET THIS I’m a Muslim Palestinian. And tbh I don’t really care, my grandma always told me stories about her Jewish neighbours in Palestine, and it’s so interesting to see the bond between them. Free Palestine from Zionism NOT Jewish people. Oppression against one is oppression against all 💖💖
Im an Israeli and i am so happy that you make the distinction. I pray for peace for your people, for freedom for your nation and for much less violence. For true democrocy on this land and less extremest on both sides. I am sorry for the blood soaked history. Salam , peace and shalom be upon us! Soon! Alhamdulila (hope it translated correctly) مع إرادة الآلهة
I’m Pentecostal (well I was raised penetcostal, I still believe and still try to understand the word but my ideology has changed) so yeah, sorry catholics but it so easy to rip on you guys
i dont know if this is common but growing up i was told "we don't really have a specific religion, but you can look into any of them if you wanted," and honestly I don't have one just because I was too lazy, so it's nice to get informed about these things.
despite not being Jewish myself i find myself relating a lot. i'm native american and when i was younger i didnt think i was "native enough" an idea created by the very ppl who tried to eradicate us. i abandoned this part of myself out of fear or appropriating and not being enough. in the last year, i've learned thats how they end us and i began to reclaim this part of myself (in the native community we call this reconnection because sadly this story is all too common) and its hard, idk any natives and i often feel like "a bad native" for not knowing more about my heritage but at the end of the day its just that, it's my heritage and no one else and i embrace this part of myself for me and my ancestors. you should be proud of yourself as im sure your own ancestors are
Incredibly relatable. My grandma is an immigrant from Mexico, and even though I try to reconnect to a culture I'm entitled to enjoy, I never feel "Mexican enough". You are valid in your identity, and there's no wrong way to be who you are
I'm part of two ethnic/racial minorities and never felt "enough" for either, especially because of my appearance, so I've just existed as something people assumed and I rarely actually claim either. Especially because people are so willing to tell anyone who doesn't look the standard that they're wrong. I'd love to reconnect but I'm lost to say the least lol
As someone with a non practicing Jewish father raised Catholic by my mother, safe to say I related to this video a lot. I really wish that I knew more about my culture and heritage. It’s this whole side of me thats absent. Of course those feelings are complicated by the fact I identify myself religiously as Catholic (despite becoming agnostic). Which has caused me to feel guilty about wanting to connect with my jewish heritage
Yes I feel a the same whay! I don’t have contact with my dad who is Jewish and my grandma is dead. I wish I could learn more about my Jewish family. The last time I saw my dad he talked about my grandma being Jewish and so we were. I just wish my grandma lived a bit longer so I could talk to her
I'm the exact same! Jewish dad but raised Catholic. Sometimes I call myself "half Jewish" which is a bit confusing for people haha. I wish I was closer to my Jewish side too
Hey, don't worry about it. Wanting to connect with your heritage is completely understandable, and Judaism is more than a religion. It's a nationality and a culture as well. It's visiting friends when they're sick, bringing food to the house of someone who's sitting shiva, it's facepalming when Christians are being appropriative. Wanting to explore heritage that you have is not appropriation. Welcome home.
As a "matrilineal" Jew from both sides? I actually godwinned myself in an Israeli courtroom no less. Through a complex series of events which I shall not go into here, I testified against the pot dealer we had bought from. He decided to represent himself. So he got up an aggressively asked me how I could recognize him. "Uh...well, you have a really big nose..." We left town pretty quickly after that. *wrylook*
The n@zi propaganda made up the nose thing. Well, not them specifically but antisemitic books for adults and children's books. Popular in Germany before the party's rise to power.
I am not Jewish, but I get bullied for being “Jewish”, because I look like Anne Frank (A well known Jewish person). This made me realize that so many people on this world are still against Jewish people and that’s in my opinion really sad..
Unfortunately there are still a lot of anti semites around even many decades after ww2 and the Holocaust ended. The antisemitism that killed Anne Frank and millions of other innocent people during the Holocaust just briefly went into hiding but has continued to show itself especially in the modern day. Yes it is indeed very sad that there are still bigoted hateful people around in the modern day.
Also Anne Frank is one of my favorite historical figures due to her compelling and interesting life and that despite all of the horrible things that happened during the Holocaust Anne still saw the good in people. I even have some books about Anne in my bedroom and I keep them within easy sight so that I can read them whenever I want to. Therefore it is very interesting that you look like Anne. I am sorry for all of the bullying and hatred that you went through. Nobody should ever have to go through those horrible things.
My family is friends with a Jewish family and they’re awesome and yes they did tell us where the BEST bagels were 😋 it’s in Florida tho and I don’t live there :(
Not jewish, but the growth of antisemitism being used as a “joke” or “just dark humor” is really unsettling. There’s so many people at my school who are so into the “joke” to the point where it feels like they’re not playing around anymore. And any time I try to speak out against them, I get told that I’m taking things to seriously or I’m being sensitive. Thank you so much for giving me a word for this kind of thing though, it is really helpful.
Shrödinger's douche is another. It means someone acts as if what they said is truly their opinion or just a joke depending on how their audience reacts. It's why ambivalence on these things is so dangerous.
I've noticed this at my school too :( and none of the teachers are doing anything about it, not even my history teacher as we learn about WW2! Except the mean teacher everyone hates, so no one listens to her. This shit is getting so bad, I've got no clue how most people are missing it
As a Jew, my friends and I make a lot of antisemitic jokes. And it's funny 'cause we're all Jewish, but seeing some of the jokes Americans make gets disturbing sometimes. We make some dumb jokes but at least they are ironic unlike a lot of what I see coming out of America
Oh I get it. I remember one time my brother showed up at school after shaving his head for cosmetic purposes, and he and some of his meaner friends made jokes about....... certain things involving Jews and WWII. It's unbelievably messed up. My brother and I aren't Jewish but our dad's extended family is, and because of this, he thinks he can get away with saying depraved and disgusting things because he thinks he's "half-Jewish". The way this stuff is normalized is atrocious and I'm glad Illymations was willing to address it.
This video was amazing, I may not be Jewish, I was married into it. My loving husband is Jewish. I struggled learning the rules and everything. But my mother in law noticed me struggling and she said “your doing fine, you have plenty time to learn. Also don’t worry if you got something wrong. Just do your best and have fun”,. With that I met a lot of wonderful people in Jewish communities, lm forever grateful for the teachings that mother in law is teaching me. Most of all illymation stay awesome. 😊
Holy sh*t how is it possible to be this optimistic after the crazy stuff you went through. You deserve all the happiness

As a German person this topic has been a sore spot since it's so split and difficult in general. First there's what happened to Jewish people but then there's also what happened that it could lead to what happened to Jewish people, point is usually glossed over or seen as German portraying themselves as the victim. The other issue is that very often the history of the place where I'm from, what my heritage is used a bad example without explaining the why and the how, it is like being reduced to a stereotype. The latter is also often used as a reason to glossover or justify what happened to the people affected by fascism and/or communism who where German Jewish or not, in a sense like "you got what you deserved" kind of way. I tried to condense my point here very much to not push my point to far here - after this video isn't about me as a non-Jew. I like to learn about judaism to what those people are to whom the Holocaust happened to not only see them as victims of something.
As someone who's a jewish, I guess? lives in Israel, and speaks hebrew, I'm so happy to see you talk about it! More people need to talk about this and feel safe being jewish, so I'm glad to see this vid. Thank you illy, and to all the people out there, Have a nice day/night!
Being Jewish myself, I've always been scared to say I'm Jewish and when I was little, instead of telling my teachers I'm Jewish, I just stayed silent and wrote letters to Santa during the December time. Some people made fun of me if they found I was Jewish and it used to make me really sad. Thank you for making this video. I never knew you were Jewish!
I feel so sorry that you had to go through that. No one should ever have to feel bad because of their religion, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. In my case, I feel proud to be Jewish. It gives me a sense of community and family, even if you’re not that Jewish. I hope that one day everyone can be proud about it!
Being able to see a creator like you representing so many parts of me honestly brings me to tears. I'm Jewish, but moreso by heritage, and I'm also autistic. So when you come forward and speak about these topics I can't help but cry. You are a safe space for so many people. Thank you
As someone who’s gone through the exact same identity crisis having with a Jewish father and a Christian mother it really means the world to hear about someone who’s gone through the same situation. I was really quite touched by how much this resonated with me:)
There's a fairly sizeable Muslim community in my town and I remember multiple times hearing "hey, wait, you're not supposed to eat that, it's pork" while I was in school. Sometimes it was meant to help, sometimes quite the opposite.
I'm christian and I was friends with a jewish kid. We met at VBS. I wasn't able to eat gluten and she couldn't eat pork. For breakfast the staff would hand out sausage biscuits. I gave her my bread and she gave me her sausage. We had a nice little trade going on and talked about how we loved dogs and writing stories. It was a fun time. Sadly, I haven't seen her in a while. But she was pretty awesome person. Also, I need to find the name of it, but I found a poem/short story about a Christian and Jewish kid back in medieval times. The two become friends by passing a ball back and forth between them from a distance, their differences melt away in my favorite line, with the by thinking how she was, "Not like a Jew, more like a Christian." The girl doing the same by thinking, "Not like a Christian, more like a Jew." I love the message that regardless of who you are, you can still be friends.
Wait, Night by Elie Wiesel was banned?? I read that my junior year of highschool and it was SO insightful. I can’t begin to understand why this amazingly in-depth novel was banned. Does anyone know why? It seemed like a great book to show students not only for reading but also learning first person perspectives of our history.
That's exactly WHY it was banned, probably. To limit understanding of different perspectives. Some people just suck that way. We need more people like you who see a greater understanding/empathy as the good thing that it is.
I urge anyone scrolling by to google who is behind the book bans. Hint: it isn't lizard people. There's a political party from the 1920's that used to ban and even burn books. Rhymes with Yahtzee. Followers of that party have since rebranded that ideology to seem more palatable to a modern day audience. They can't legally tell people to commit hate crimes, but they can arm them with guns and print article after article painting marginalized groups as vicious thugs while growling through the speakers of their outraged listeners, "If only some truth seeking savior could come along and 'deal' with these deviants."
Some schools have also banned Maus by Art Spiegelman & Diary of Anne Frank, among others. They use excuses like "it's too violent, has nudity/ sexual content etc. They want schools to be for white hetero Christians only but call it " parental rights"
There are also schools trying to limit the education about slavery, and civil rights movement, etc. I believe it’s also because what the people have mentioned above, they don’t want that type of in-depth content and want to paint a ‘perfect’ image of the US instead of actually showing the things that have happened back to the founding days. Really unfortunate and says a lot about the US politics…
@@ẞooßysi dunno, im not jealous cause I also get money in that time range for completely different reasons. (Birthday/Christmas, I am not Christian… most of my family is. My Father and Mother raised me Atheist. Only time I ever went to church was for my neighbors’ funeral. :( kinda funny to know everyone around me believes in something, but I’m just kinda like: “guess I’ll find out”)
@@ẞooßysMight be because of the belief of supremacy, or the belief that they have done wrong to you solely based on what happened in the past. E.g.- Nazism in Germany caused Jews to be hated by many because some people believed the propaganda and passed it down.
Amazing job with this video. I’m Christian and most of my family are Christian too but my aunt (my mom’s half sister) and my uncle are Jewish. I also have a lot of Jewish friends. I never understood the whole thing with “Christians” hating other religions. I think other religions are interesting and I was raised in a family that respects other cultures.
As an openly Jewish LGBT person, I've noticed that a lot of these sentiments have striking parallels to being queer. From identity and expression, to hate and harassment, much of what you said really resonated with me deeply. Queer people were also a victim of the Holocaust and it is absolutely baffling to see other Jews cause infighting between these two groups when the similarities are much closer than people realize. Even the Jewish blood libels (The middle-age myth and conspiracy theory that Jews would kidnap Christian babies and use their blood to make the Passover matza) have parallels to the false allegations of LGBT people being p***s. If you take anything away from this, BE KIND TO OTHERS!
It's extremely tied together from a gay Jewish history nerds perspective. Whatever happened before is happening again. We cannot be quiet about injustice. if you see something inappropriate say something
I was taught at a very young age that everyone is born equal no matter their race, religion or gender and it breaks my heart knowing that there are still horrible people in the world and I hope that one day they will all fall down and everyone can finally treat others the way they deserve to be treated
The belief that everyone is born equal is basically liberalism in a nutshell. It is not self-evident, it is an ideology, those who are raised without this idea invariably view their group as more important or more worthy of life/existence than others. You have to be taught to not hate. What's horrifying is seeing how much rejection and pushback against liberalism exists in the world today. It's like we are going backwards.
It’s so wild finally hearing someone with almost the same heritage as me. My mom is Christian and my dad is Jewish, but he was also never mitzvah’ed because his Jewish mother somewhat disregarded her religion when marrying my catholic grandfather. It’s left me with this really really weird connection with my heritage.
Reach out to reform temples in ur local community. I'm Indigenous american and reaching out to elders and learning old traditions, stories, and customs has really led me on a good path. Christianity (I can say as I am one) had good morals and ideals but has still taken away so much culture from other groups its sad. pls know that you are jewish and people are out there that want to see you succeed.
literally same!! Ive always felt like I was in some form of religous/ cultural limbo because of it. there should be support groups for people like us who want to reconnect or at least want to understand ourselves a bit better

Look into the Kaifeng Jews! Theirs actually a ton of Jewish history in China!
Do you like A.H?

My mom tried to teach me about native heritage, but since I was so young, I didn't understand most of it, and now I wish I paid more attention. But as I got older, I grew to appreciate my heritage, and now I'm continuing to learn more about my family's heritage. Thank you for the video Illy!

Small question, though.
Why did she said about being worried about appropriation?
I did not understood that part
@@Tactical_TailgaterI think she meant that she was worried that she wasn’t Jewish and was culturally appropriating Judaism. And if you don’t know what “cultural appropriation” means, it’s basically means; the unacknowledged or inappropriate adoption of a specific culture, ethnicity, religion, which is usually done by someone who isn’t educated on said culture
As well as said person usually faces very little discrimination against their own ethnicity and culture which makes it all the more problematic because they’re *appropriating a culture.*

Huh?
By the way i am a secular jew from israel amd i can explain why : " ledor vador " means "from generation to generation " .
Dor ( דור )
"means "generation
ve( ו)
Means "and" but it in gebrew you can say "and" simular to how english use "to"
Le ( ל )
in here i think there was a mistake on translation . "le" is actually the word hebrew uses to turn past verbs into verb names and we also use it insted of words like "in" and "for" but ironically enough it does not use as alternative to "from" , the correct meaning of "from" in "(מ)hebrew is "me .
So the correct translation will be :

You can't control my speech because this is 'Murica."
Ex.: Trans people requesting to be respected with the right name/pronouns, people asking someone not to say slurs, Jewish people not wanting to be harrassed and asking for someone not to spread misinformation, etc.
In a perfect world, no one would be harrassed, but we can all do our best to make our world better. Even though it will never be perfect.
as someone who grew up catholic and is now unsure of religion- i have always admired and love jewish traditions. i have so many friends and even some distant family that is jewish. it is so unfair that people would even think these things. I love y’all and stay safe

You clearly just wish you were disadvantaged.

And please, do not generalize that you will get hate "crimed" by muslims, this itself is for the lack of a better word, discrimatory or "racist" (again, it's for the lack of a better word, muslims aren't a different race, and anyone can become a muslim, with any skin color).

Once I was old enough to learn the differences between "Roman Catholic", "Episcopal", and "various other Christian denominations," I basically "converted." As a catholic this got me good.

@@CheesenMac123Lutheran Gang, what's up!!!!
i dont know if this is common but growing up i was told "we don't really have a specific religion, but you can look into any of them if you wanted," and honestly I don't have one just because I was too lazy, so it's nice to get informed about these things.
despite not being Jewish myself i find myself relating a lot. i'm native american and when i was younger i didnt think i was "native enough" an idea created by the very ppl who tried to eradicate us. i abandoned this part of myself out of fear or appropriating and not being enough. in the last year, i've learned thats how they end us and i began to reclaim this part of myself (in the native community we call this reconnection because sadly this story is all too common) and its hard, idk any natives and i often feel like "a bad native" for not knowing more about my heritage but at the end of the day its just that, it's my heritage and no one else and i embrace this part of myself for me and my ancestors. you should be proud of yourself as im sure your own ancestors are
Incredibly relatable.
14:06 well about beyonce...

Yeah....that's almost as infuriating as "You don't look autistic." Wth does someone's looks have to do with what's going on with them?
yeah the only thing worse than that is being told "you do look [jewish/autistic/etc]
"Well you don't look _idiot_ but there you are!"
"Uh...well, you have a really big nose..."
We left town pretty quickly after that. *wrylook*
@@swirlingsun Yeah
The n@zi propaganda made up the nose thing. Well, not them specifically but antisemitic books for adults and children's books. Popular in Germany before the party's rise to power.
I am not Jewish, but I get bullied for being “Jewish”, because I look like Anne Frank (A well known Jewish person). This made me realize that so many people on this world are still against Jewish people and that’s in my opinion really sad..
There is nothin wrong with you looking like Anne Frank. You being a furry on the other hand..

My family is friends with a Jewish family and they’re awesome and yes they did tell us where the BEST bagels were 😋 it’s in Florida tho and I don’t live there :(
I'm having my bar mitzvah soon and I'm super exited! ❤🕍 also, a kid at my school got terribly bullied for being Jewish.
"Just edgy humor" my bum.
Illy being confident enough to come out and reveal some of her darkest secrets is so heart warming, we will always be here for you Illy
Being also not-that-Jewish the intro made me laugh out loud 😂 thank you so much for this video!
NOT THE AMMAZING IN THE BACKGROUND OF THE PLANE!!! 3:01
The two become friends by passing a ball back and forth between them from a distance, their differences melt away in my favorite line, with the by thinking how she was, "Not like a Jew, more like a Christian." The girl doing the same by thinking, "Not like a Christian, more like a Jew."
I love the message that regardless of who you are, you can still be friends.
that sounds beautiful!
I am so sorry that you have not heard from them your story is so amazing and beautiful ❤❤❤
I don't understand how it's SO HARD to accept each other no matter what. Like what is wrong with being different?!

It’s left me with this really really weird connection with my heritage.
