Yeah the IP could legitimately be turned into a really fun game. That DMC styled game idea sounds like a dream. Also I think that even as a side-scrolling beat ‘em up if they went for a game that had more depth while still using that transformation mechanic it could still be sick. Like I was playing Battletoads 2020 after getting it on sale recently and found the toad switching feature in single player really neat (I’m sure it isn’t nearly the first game in the genre to let you swap characters like that on the fly but I have limited experience with the genre so that’s the example I’m using). I think that if there was a more traditional beat ‘em up made for this series, a cool thing would be to make it where you’re encouraged to keep swapping between forms to keep things going. (I’m not great at explaining things, I tried to describe my idea in more detail a few times but it just ended up being confusing and way too long so I’ll just leave it there. Basically I would love the DMC style thing you mentioned, and your idea made me think about how this series could work as a beat ‘em up in the modern day if they tried again to make one that’s actually better this time)
honestly, nothing is worse than a painfully below mediocre game. Like it's that certain sweetspot where nothing works, but there also isn't anything that makes you go "hey, that is a neat idea." Worse games at least make you laugh at how bad they are. Below mediocre games however just bore and annoy you *just* enough to get you on the wrong side.

Counterpoint: Hero and Villain missions in later stages. Have fun trying to find that ONE enemy you need to kill to clear the level and then wasting an hour going back and forth through a very repetitive and forgettable environment only to find out that this grey enemy was on a grey bridge above in a grey area. Shadow the Hedgehog can be fun to mock, but it's also super unfun to actually play.

I do like the idea of a hack-and-slash fantasy brawler where you transform into different anthropomorphic beasts on the fly. But... it was the early 2000s.
There's something to be said for budget. Sneak King never had a chance to be good for the budget it was made and distributed at. It's rather literally like criticizing the quality of a Happy Meal toy. Altered Beast DID. Altered Beast is a real game.
I like that the spider boss gives you an upgrade to get through a type of wall you have never seen for the whole game and will never see again after the immediate moment you use it.
I hope Jason Dobbins feels good about what he did... You should play a game you actually like again to cleanse this experience, like NMH, since it's been your endcard theme for years.

I'm suddenly reminded about how video game blocking is so stupid sometimes. The Final Guard in Dawn of Sorrow is so large that you can very easily hit it in the back of the ankle and have that attack make absolutely no contact whatsoever with its shield, but if it decides to hold the shield up it becomes completely invincible including such ankle smacks. I can't say with authority, but I feel like there's not a small chance that you did something completely wrong throughout your time with this one.
Being serious, when he was talking about upgrading, the last option he selects mentions being useable on blocking enimies which would make the gatekeepers alot less annoying, so ye if he figured out how to upgrade, probably would have been less annoying lol

But now it's pretty clear that with "Like a Dragon", that Sega might be here to stay if they can keep up the quality of the games. And with Yakuza: Like a Dragon, or Yakuza 7 being as good as it was. I think it's in good hands. Yakuza 0 review when? I like it when you review good stuff as much as the bad stuff. Don't get me wrong the bad stuff is hilarious to watch. But I would love to see you do a video like your New Vegas video playing Yakuza 0, or Yakuza 7.
That Pink Bipedal Chicken boss, design-wise looks inspired by one of the old enemies from classic Altered beast, only it wasn't a towering creature. (I think it was also in Golden Axe as well.)
I hope they revisit this series sometime. Such a cool concept with lots of potential. Something like this with updated graphics (and actually sensible game design) could be awesome.
I hate to break it to ya but the "mall fourth floor basketball court" is actually fairly common a few malls I've been to have had them. You can actually find them in a lot of weird areas usually connecting with sports stores so you can try out some stuff you just bought.
Whoever on the dev team went "Oh yeah, the 2nd form should be a fish-man, who fights underwater!" should have gotten a swirly from the other developers. Why would you EVER want underwater third-person swimming combat sequences? I can't think of any game that's done it well enough that it was fun and not just annoying.
It’s funny that it took Sega in the year 2005 to bring back Altered Beast back to its roots(and so they thought). I remember playing this and it’s still stinks after all these years,but the body horror transformation scenes looks awesome. That’s one credit I can give these guys. No wonder it didn’t get a North American release.
I would like to see Altered Beast get another shot- go back to the Greek Mythology roots, keep the transformation scenes (but make them only play the first time you use them or during story moments), and improve the gameplay. Make it so you can win in human form, but transforming is better to deal with certain enemy types and bosses.
Having only discovered this game recently, defeated the final boss today (and currently going for 100%) I can safely say that *yes* it is a frustrating game (the combat could be a lot better by adding a dodge, block and lock-on mechanics). However, I find it oddly entertaining in it's own silly way. One thing that you were wondering early on is how to get those special N and S chips to upgrade beast form specific abilities. I found out about halfway through playing that you can get these from specific enemies called Uniques. These pop up in secret locations that you need to access with later beast forms or in ex-boss arenas. I struggled a LOT with several bosses, especially the Griphon, Rhino and Final Boss (flying form sucks hardcore), but by upgrading the abilities they actually increase power and/or utility quite a bit. For example, I had powered up the Merman bubble attack and defeated that pesky eel you had so much trouble with in about... 40 seconds. I would have loved if this game got more fleshed out because the concept and potential is there. Thank you for the in-depth video. I stumbled upon it after I finished my playthrough and was curious if anyone did a review on it. And well, you did. I had a good laugh and nodded my head several times during the video because you pretty much nailed all the painful things the game has on it's head. The only good things to come from this game are the cool (but sometimes icky) transformation sequences and some music tracks.

The enemies able to block the yeti's massive arms no matter what reminds me of the mobs in Wolverine's Revenge who could block your adamantium claws WITH THEIR HEADS.
I can’t tell if he’s intensely unaware or not. Because some of the things he talked about like, the werewolf jump didn’t work because the ice boss was red, or the fact that hitting enemies actually FILLS the special gauge!
I grew up with altered beast and in my opinion I like this game because not only can you transform into different monsters at will you can also jam with the monster's theme being played in their forms (seriously listen to that for a few minutes and you'll start moving with the beat!) Although I do agree the monsters combos are laggy and slow. Also have an awesome day BTW the protagonist already had a name his name was Luke Custer (thought that you should know)

I had this game in ps2 when i was a kid and the only thing i remember is being traumatized by the werewolf transformation and never playing it again. It's good to know that i now have an actual reason to hate it.
I know this is probably a weird thing to complain about when there are so many more pressing issues, but I'm honestly kinda upset that in the edgy one, you don't get a phase where you just become a bigger and beefier human before you fully transform. Not only because I think it was cool, but because that could be a good way to make being human better in the edgy remake. To account for how transforming is different in each game though, I figure that in the edge version, your human form slowly but permanently beefs up and gets better over time, overall contributing to a broader change I would make where the game isn't so pushy about what forms you use, and will let you have greater freedom in how you want to try and beat it.
When I was a kid, I played the heck out of this game. the original altered beast was the first game I've ever played, so it had a special place in my heart. I also really enjoy those ben 10 games on the ps2, so project altered beast was a edgy, more mature-ish experience, disregading the terrible gameplay. The idea of transforming into different monsters was something I always enjoyed. I know this game is terrible, but it is also my favorite worst game, almost like a guilty pleasure 😅
when i was a teenager i used to plays this game at a friend house, it took many different sessions of 3 hours to finish it. Is a hard game for sure but i never really remember having that hard of a time, sure i do remember i would get defeated by bosses from time on time, also garuda has to be really annoying to control. The chimera still has to be the most memorable boss i remember from that game because you literally have to use every transformation for each phase, dragon was great transformation. Still i know there are secret transformations on this game you get for doing extra stuff like the bear,weretiger and U.W.M. I really liked your video it bring me memories of teenage years playing while talking with my friend.
i remember playing it back then, and in all honesty, while many people called it trash, i actually did enjoy. never managed to finish it, but it was more due to something else(either the ps2 broke, i got into another game, or something like that).

Before I start, let me make one thing clear: I like this game. That said, let's face it: even someone who actually enjoyed playing it can't say it's good. I have to agree with almost everything that has been said. The story is weak, to be kind. The difficulty is extreme, a factor worsened by an unfriendly learning curve, gameplay that requires unnecessary precision, and practically zero tutorials. In fact, the game's biggest appeal is for the few who, like me, managed to notice the small references to the classic Altered Beast. Very, very small, and only recognizable with a good deal of effort. Despite that, I feel kind of obligated to mention some inaccurate information in the video. The main character has an official name. In another one of the abysmal mistakes of the game, his name only appears in the credits: Luke Caster. The blocking enemies are a pain, i totally agree. But the same command the Wendigo uses to lift objects grabs almost any enemy, and it's unblockable. The bosses that you are obligated to fight with Garuda and Merman are difficult at the first time, but are the easiest ones when you learn the way to do. Mostly because these two forms are simple to upgrade. You don't unlock combos, only upgrade theirs projectiles fire rate. The attributes that can't be upgraded with normal genes are upgraded with specific genes, that you obtain defeating the optional hidden enemies. Another marvelous thing the game don't tell you until the player find and defeated one. The way you described make the game looks totally linear, but there's a lot of optionals and secrets. The move that Garuda uses to destroy the webs can be used to break through a waterfall, for example. Last one: you forgot to mention that the special gauge fills automatically, and these moves can really save you in a bad situation. If you had transformed in Wendigo after jumping over the car, you could have waited the gauge to fill and freeze them safely. Saying again, the game isn't a jewel. Only play this if you have an unbearable crazy curiosity and very strong determination to finish it.
I appreciate you bringing up the Wendigo throw. That's honestly something I didn't know and it probably would have made things go quicker. The problem though is that to use that I'd have to use the Wendigo, and I really don't like the Wendigo.

No game has ever screamed “NEEDED ANOTHER MONTH OR 2 OF DEV TIME” than this. Like this game is content rich, has varied gameplay styles, and unlockables for future play throughs But how bad the majority of the combat is, the primary gameplay loop, turns all those positives into negatives. Just doing small things, increase the yeti and Minotaur speed slightly, make you harder to stun lock, make it easier to break enemy blocks, let you save wherever you want. And it could’ve been something special.

Since I was 5 years old I've been involved in Edgies games, like this Altered Beast, Castlevania Curse Of Darkness, Berserk Millennium Falcon, etc. And between these nostalgic games, I really say it doesn't have the same essence of how I played in childhood, because now with a critical sense I see that this one went so, so wrong, as inside and outside of it that it's no wonder he's so hated, the critics were still kind to the reviews. To be more practical I will divide it into topics. *Positive Points:* 1- The game even managed to develop a deep Lore behind it, and could develop sequels that could implement it further. 2- The Soundtracks of this game are really good, both for the action moments and for the dystopia in which that world takes place, the high notes of the music give me goosebumps to this day. 3- The game managed to bring an interesting and innovative premise to the PS2 era, you being able to transform into different beasts with unique skills to progress in the game's story, the last time I saw a similar premise was in Demon's Crest on the SNES. 4- One of the only PS2 games to feature a dynamic dismemberment system for the Console. *Negatives points outside the game:* 1- Sega didn't care about this game and at that time they just wanted to bring the Blue Hedgehog back with strength in the games market, with Sonic 2006, lol 2- Sega invested almost all of its budget and time to develop Sonic 2006, in the end, Altered Beast still had better ratings than Sonic 2006, lmao 3- Sega gave a very low budget and time for games that would be on "outdated" consoles from Sega's point of view, it only cared about the XBOX 360 and PS3. 4- Sega put Sega Shanghai to develop this game, the same situation Rockstar put Grove Street Games to develop GTA Definitive Edition. 5- The game went through the "Resident Evil Treatment", where, in this case, it tried to copy the Resident Evil style to surf the wave of the Newly Released Resident Evil 4. 6- The game didn't know how to share the budget for the game's points, it seems that it only put everything in the initial cutscenes of the game. 7- The game was released in a totally wrong year when Resident Evil 4 was about to release, and God of War would arrive a few months later. *Negative points within the game:* 1- PSX SFX 2- The protagonist doesn't have a shred of personality, which consequently doesn't make the player care about his progression. 3- The cutscenes start very good and very animated, however, towards the middle and end of the game, holy crap... PSX Cutscenes. 4- The game was released in 2005, but it seems like it was released around 2001 where the devs were still testing the limits of PSX2. 5- The game committed one of the worst sins of a continuation of a media piece, which is to simply forget the past games and completely remake it from scratch, only using the skeleton of the idea. 6- Graphics selection turned out not to age very well. *Final verdict: Potential thrown straight into the trash, eh Sega?*
I remember when me and my friend bought this game to play on the ps2. We recognized the name Altered Beast, remembering the Sega Genesis game and got curious to see it on a ps2 game. We bailed when we saw the morphing animation.
I don’t know how you managed to die this many times , I’ve played this game as a teenager and the only thing that was able to kill me was the rhino , but once I’ve learned it’s pattern it became easy , it maybe the worst game for you , but for me , I’ve enjoyed this game so much , yes the transformations need better combat moves , and the dragon doesn’t feel like it have much to do in this game , but still even with that you can still finish the game deathless on hard difficulty

You talked about Shinobi in the Genesis part. Shinobi is also one of the few Sega franchise being remade in the sixth generation. It also got a female spinoff called Nightshade.
I'm so glad bumbles didn't play on hard and had to deal with celling frogs in the mall. Aiming Wendigo's ice blocks was already bad, now you have to aim them blindly. Then again, why would you play this on hard?
When I was a kid and later through some emulators I used to play Altered Beast and even when I was entertained I also questioned why the game was considered a classic or a gem... Turns out almost nobody likes that game, it feels like everybody was lied to lol. Even if I was told that the PS2 game was garbage I was curious about it so I always wanted to play it... When i was a kid i thought genesis altered beast depiction of body mass gain was a scientific accurate and if you get too strong you naturally become a werewolf.
you got hard filtered - this game's fun. i think it's worth noting a few things though: 1. the camera is manageable. center it behind yourself instead of using the analog sticks. this is 5th/6th gen 101 2. birds are fine. just focus on their shadows and use the wolf transformation. line up the shadows with a jump attack and poof - gone 3. you don't need to fight every enemy. just kill the ones emanating the ghostly auras and you're good if this is the worst game you've played then i think you've got a pretty shallow perception of bad games. this one's not for everybody, but at the VERY least everything works. it's not a buggy disaster. it's not a painfully unforgiving mess that wasn't playtested - it's just something you didn't enjoy
I agree despite the game flaws like the unfair struggle with combat and some levels the game is not that bad and I hope for remake cause the game idea itself is so cool that with the right people it has a potential to be a master piece

The game is closer to Arcade 3D Beat-em-up than Devil May Cry.

I like that the spider boss gives you an upgrade to get through a type of wall you have never seen for the whole game and will never see again after the immediate moment you use it.
I hope Jason Dobbins feels good about what he did... You should play a game you actually like again to cleanse this experience, like NMH, since it's been your endcard theme for years.

I'm suddenly reminded about how video game blocking is so stupid sometimes. The Final Guard in Dawn of Sorrow is so large that you can very easily hit it in the back of the ankle and have that attack make absolutely no contact whatsoever with its shield, but if it decides to hold the shield up it becomes completely invincible including such ankle smacks.
I can't say with authority, but I feel like there's not a small chance that you did something completely wrong throughout your time with this one.

Yeah, and it only took until Yakuza 0 which is like the eighth game in the series to make it big in the west. But now it's pretty clear that with "Like a Dragon", that Sega might be here to stay if they can keep up the quality of the games. And with Yakuza: Like a Dragon, or Yakuza 7 being as good as it was. I think it's in good hands.

I hate to break it to ya but the "mall fourth floor basketball court" is actually fairly common a few malls I've been to have had them. You can actually find them in a lot of weird areas usually connecting with sports stores so you can try out some stuff you just bought.

They're even pretty bad in Sekiro, although thankfully you're only ever forced to do one of them.

It’s funny that it took Sega in the year 2005 to bring back Altered Beast back to its roots(and so they thought). I remember playing this and it’s still stinks after all these years,but the body horror transformation scenes looks awesome. That’s one credit I can give these guys. No wonder it didn’t get a North American release.

I would like to see Altered Beast get another shot- go back to the Greek Mythology roots, keep the transformation scenes (but make them only play the first time you use them or during story moments), and improve the gameplay. Make it so you can win in human form, but transforming is better to deal with certain enemy types and bosses.
So what you're telling me is Sega needs to make a better fighting game around this or use this as the backstory for g u n?
At the very least, Altered Beast is an amazing 19 minute epic by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

Having only discovered this game recently, defeated the final boss today (and currently going for 100%) I can safely say that *yes* it is a frustrating game (the combat could be a lot better by adding a dodge, block and lock-on mechanics). However, I find it oddly entertaining in it's own silly way.
One thing that you were wondering early on is how to get those special N and S chips to upgrade beast form specific abilities. I found out about halfway through playing that you can get these from specific enemies called Uniques. These pop up in secret locations that you need to access with later beast forms or in ex-boss arenas.
I struggled a LOT with several bosses, especially the Griphon, Rhino and Final Boss (flying form sucks hardcore), but by upgrading the abilities they actually increase power and/or utility quite a bit.
For example, I had powered up the Merman bubble attack and defeated that pesky eel you had so much trouble with in about... 40 seconds.
I would have loved if this game got more fleshed out because the concept and potential is there.
Thank you for the in-depth video. I stumbled upon it after I finished my playthrough and was curious if anyone did a review on it. And well, you did. I had a good laugh and nodded my head several times during the video because you pretty much nailed all the painful things the game has on it's head.
The only good things to come from this game are the cool (but sometimes icky) transformation sequences and some music tracks.

The enemies able to block the yeti's massive arms no matter what reminds me of the mobs in Wolverine's Revenge who could block your adamantium claws WITH THEIR HEADS.
I can’t tell if he’s intensely unaware or not. Because some of the things he talked about like, the werewolf jump didn’t work because the ice boss was red, or the fact that hitting enemies actually FILLS the special gauge!

I grew up with altered beast and in my opinion I like this game because not only can you transform into different monsters at will you can also jam with the monster's theme being played in their forms (seriously listen to that for a few minutes and you'll start moving with the beat!) Although I do agree the monsters combos are laggy and slow.

I had this game in ps2 when i was a kid and the only thing i remember is being traumatized by the werewolf transformation and never playing it again. It's good to know that i now have an actual reason to hate it.

I know this is probably a weird thing to complain about when there are so many more pressing issues, but I'm honestly kinda upset that in the edgy one, you don't get a phase where you just become a bigger and beefier human before you fully transform.
Not only because I think it was cool, but because that could be a good way to make being human better in the edgy remake.
To account for how transforming is different in each game though, I figure that in the edge version, your human form slowly but permanently beefs up and gets better over time, overall contributing to a broader change I would make where the game isn't so pushy about what forms you use, and will let you have greater freedom in how you want to try and beat it.
When I was a kid, I played the heck out of this game. the original altered beast was the first game I've ever played, so it had a special place in my heart. I also really enjoy those ben 10 games on the ps2, so project altered beast was a edgy, more mature-ish experience, disregading the terrible gameplay. The idea of transforming into different monsters was something I always enjoyed. I know this game is terrible, but it is also my favorite worst game, almost like a guilty pleasure 😅

when i was a teenager i used to plays this game at a friend house, it took many different sessions of 3 hours to finish it. Is a hard game for sure but i never really remember having that hard of a time, sure i do remember i would get defeated by bosses from time on time, also garuda has to be really annoying to control. The chimera still has to be the most memorable boss i remember from that game because you literally have to use every transformation for each phase, dragon was great transformation. Still i know there are secret transformations on this game you get for doing extra stuff like the bear,weretiger and U.W.M. I really liked your video it bring me memories of teenage years playing while talking with my friend.
i remember playing it back then, and in all honesty, while many people called it trash, i actually did enjoy. never managed to finish it, but it was more due to something else(either the ps2 broke, i got into another game, or something like that).

Before I start, let me make one thing clear: I like this game. That said, let's face it: even someone who actually enjoyed playing it can't say it's good.
I have to agree with almost everything that has been said. The story is weak, to be kind. The difficulty is extreme, a factor worsened by an unfriendly learning curve, gameplay that requires unnecessary precision, and practically zero tutorials. In fact, the game's biggest appeal is for the few who, like me, managed to notice the small references to the classic Altered Beast. Very, very small, and only recognizable with a good deal of effort.
Despite that, I feel kind of obligated to mention some inaccurate information in the video.
The main character has an official name. In another one of the abysmal mistakes of the game, his name only appears in the credits: Luke Caster.
The blocking enemies are a pain, i totally agree. But the same command the Wendigo uses to lift objects grabs almost any enemy, and it's unblockable.
The bosses that you are obligated to fight with Garuda and Merman are difficult at the first time, but are the easiest ones when you learn the way to do. Mostly because these two forms are simple to upgrade. You don't unlock combos, only upgrade theirs projectiles fire rate.
The attributes that can't be upgraded with normal genes are upgraded with specific genes, that you obtain defeating the optional hidden enemies. Another marvelous thing the game don't tell you until the player find and defeated one.
The way you described make the game looks totally linear, but there's a lot of optionals and secrets. The move that Garuda uses to destroy the webs can be used to break through a waterfall, for example.
Last one: you forgot to mention that the special gauge fills automatically, and these moves can really save you in a bad situation. If you had transformed in Wendigo after jumping over the car, you could have waited the gauge to fill and freeze them safely.
Saying again, the game isn't a jewel. Only play this if you have an unbearable crazy curiosity and very strong determination to finish it.
I appreciate you bringing up the Wendigo throw. That's honestly something I didn't know and it probably would have made things go quicker. The problem though is that to use that I'd have to use the Wendigo, and I really don't like the Wendigo.
Oh, i forgot one thing. You can disable the transformation scenes in Options.

No game has ever screamed “NEEDED ANOTHER MONTH OR 2 OF DEV TIME” than this. Like this game is content rich, has varied gameplay styles, and unlockables for future play throughs
But how bad the majority of the combat is, the primary gameplay loop, turns all those positives into negatives.
Just doing small things, increase the yeti and Minotaur speed slightly, make you harder to stun lock, make it easier to break enemy blocks, let you save wherever you want.
And it could’ve been something special.

I love that game. It's good simple fun.
Since I was 5 years old I've been involved in Edgies games, like this Altered Beast, Castlevania Curse Of Darkness, Berserk Millennium Falcon, etc. And between these nostalgic games, I really say it doesn't have the same essence of how I played in childhood, because now with a critical sense I see that this one went so, so wrong, as inside and outside of it that it's no wonder he's so hated, the critics were still kind to the reviews. To be more practical I will divide it into topics.
*Positive Points:*
1- The game even managed to develop a deep Lore behind it, and could develop sequels that could implement it further.
2- The Soundtracks of this game are really good, both for the action moments and for the dystopia in which that world takes place, the high notes of the music give me goosebumps to this day.
3- The game managed to bring an interesting and innovative premise to the PS2 era, you being able to transform into different beasts with unique skills to progress in the game's story, the last time I saw a similar premise was in Demon's Crest on the SNES.
4- One of the only PS2 games to feature a dynamic dismemberment system for the Console.
*Negatives points outside the game:*
1- Sega didn't care about this game and at that time they just wanted to bring the Blue Hedgehog back with strength in the games market, with Sonic 2006, lol
2- Sega invested almost all of its budget and time to develop Sonic 2006, in the end, Altered Beast still had better ratings than Sonic 2006, lmao
3- Sega gave a very low budget and time for games that would be on "outdated" consoles from Sega's point of view, it only cared about the XBOX 360 and PS3.
4- Sega put Sega Shanghai to develop this game, the same situation Rockstar put Grove Street Games to develop GTA Definitive Edition.
5- The game went through the "Resident Evil Treatment", where, in this case, it tried to copy the Resident Evil style to surf the wave of the Newly Released Resident Evil 4.
6- The game didn't know how to share the budget for the game's points, it seems that it only put everything in the initial cutscenes of the game.
7- The game was released in a totally wrong year when Resident Evil 4 was about to release, and God of War would arrive a few months later.
*Negative points within the game:*
1- PSX SFX
2- The protagonist doesn't have a shred of personality, which consequently doesn't make the player care about his progression.
3- The cutscenes start very good and very animated, however, towards the middle and end of the game, holy crap... PSX Cutscenes.
4- The game was released in 2005, but it seems like it was released around 2001 where the devs were still testing the limits of PSX2.
5- The game committed one of the worst sins of a continuation of a media piece, which is to simply forget the past games and completely remake it from scratch, only using the skeleton of the idea.
6- Graphics selection turned out not to age very well.
*Final verdict: Potential thrown straight into the trash, eh Sega?*

I remember when me and my friend bought this game to play on the ps2. We recognized the name Altered Beast, remembering the Sega Genesis game and got curious to see it on a ps2 game. We bailed when we saw the morphing animation.
I don’t know how you managed to die this many times , I’ve played this game as a teenager and the only thing that was able to kill me was the rhino , but once I’ve learned it’s pattern it became easy , it maybe the worst game for you , but for me , I’ve enjoyed this game so much , yes the transformations need better combat moves , and the dragon doesn’t feel like it have much to do in this game , but still even with that you can still finish the game deathless on hard difficulty

When I was a kid and later through some emulators I used to play Altered Beast and even when I was entertained I also questioned why the game was considered a classic or a gem... Turns out almost nobody likes that game, it feels like everybody was lied to lol. Even if I was told that the PS2 game was garbage I was curious about it so I always wanted to play it... When i was a kid i thought genesis altered beast depiction of body mass gain was a scientific accurate and if you get too strong you naturally become a werewolf.
you got hard filtered - this game's fun. i think it's worth noting a few things though:
1. the camera is manageable. center it behind yourself instead of using the analog sticks. this is 5th/6th gen 101
2. birds are fine. just focus on their shadows and use the wolf transformation. line up the shadows with a jump attack and poof - gone
3. you don't need to fight every enemy. just kill the ones emanating the ghostly auras and you're good
if this is the worst game you've played then i think you've got a pretty shallow perception of bad games. this one's not for everybody, but at the VERY least everything works. it's not a buggy disaster. it's not a painfully unforgiving mess that wasn't playtested - it's just something you didn't enjoy
I agree despite the game flaws like the unfair struggle with combat and some levels the game is not that bad and I hope for remake cause the game idea itself is so cool that with the right people it has a potential to be a master piece
