Once my scholarship funding starts coming in I'll definitely be putting some discretionary income to supporting your art.
Yeah, the core mechanics are great, it’s a crying shame that everything else was implemented so poorly. Especially the super scarcity of ammo for all weapons except the basic pistol, which really hampered the fun of confronting enemies. At least you could unlock and use the Rearmed Rad Spencer skin, instead of the gritty dreadlocks one.
That reminds me of Megaman Zero 2 (also by Capcom). That grappling hook weapon was fun and then they turn it into a god-damn pogo stick for the third game in the series. WTF?
the grappling hook was the only really good part of the game lol. I feel like Capcom should have taken that engine and made their own 3D Bionic Commando
I just love the joy you had when you remembered you already covered The Walkin Dead game. Almost like finding a $5 bill in your pocket after washing a pair of pants.
You have to admit, jumping off the first building after the Bionic Arm tutorial when the Area-1 theme kicks in was one of the greatest moments in the series and gaming in general.
I remember that in the intro song. I popped in the game and sat there for almost 30 mins while I let the title screne play the Bionic Commando theme in all its orchestral brilliance! It honestly brought a tear to my eye.
I think EA made Insomniac change the tone of Fuse to appeal to more people. The original concept with more wacky characters and weapons didn't appeal to the audience that EA wanted: the people who typically buy gray, natural-looking shooters.

Lord I remember playing this game in my teens. I did beat it because it did do the arm swing mechanic well enough to be fun but what a weird period it was to be a Capcom fan (especially considering what happened the year after).
This game has an impressive soundtrack, an impressive Voice Acting cast and a fantastic setting and yet it sadly feels empty. You roam around wishing their was more to it, wish you wasn’t constraint and allowed to do more in the game-but sadly if fails half way through. Still, I love this game. Also this came out around the time of the first Infamous game which if you see both games side by side play the same but infamous would come off 5e Victor
I remember kind of liking the game, and just completely ignored that twist about his arm. It just didn't click as something to pay attention to when I played it.
I’m one of those weird ones that found this game kinda awesome. Rad looked different but switch to the retro skin, problem solved. This game was very solid!
I remember this for being really dumb and ill-conceived, but also being oodles of fun to play on multiplayer with my friends. The swinging was pretty cool, so it was a blast trying to style on each other, and even more fun watching each other's occasional miserable failures. Good times.
"Square asked Grin to make a Soulslike sequel to FFXII, cancelled without paying them for the alpha work, and killed the whole company." is something I will never stop being mad about.
Evolve sounded like the sort of thing that was doomed from the very start, regardless of its quality. That particular variety of complex asynchronous multiplayer just asks too much out of the players.
Speaking of Capcom, Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney would be a good candidate for Wha Happun. While it was good, the fact that despite it is ostensibly about a new protagonist, it is still mostly about Phoenix and also notably shorter than the individual GBA entries, which indicates to me that something weird probably happened with its development.
Spirit of Justice nearly killed the franchise as well..! I love Ghost Trick, but it also deserves an episode. One of the best DS games, if not the best, hardly any marketing and in honesty in desperate need of a second try on the Switch..!
@Tom Quirk I need to get involved with this because yeah, Apollo Justice Ace Attorney should get a Wha Happun. Thing is, the original plan for Apollo Justice aka Gyakuten Saiban 4 was that it was going to be a reboot focusing on new characters. But somewhere down the line, Capcom felt that if Phoenix Wright wasn't going to be in the game, it wouldn't sell. So they shoehorned in Phoenix Wright at the expense of Apollo's character development. To be fair, Apollo Justice is Underrated. Truly. But in my opinion, it all worked out in the end because Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice helped Apollo's character a lot that it made me appreciate him more. And then I hear that Spirit of Justice nearly killed the franchise. WHAT?! Honestly like @TeruteruBozusama said, we need a Wha Happun on Ghost Trick. It needs a Switch version.

Dual Destinies did fine, but many didn't like it either (I liked it a lot though), so they didn't buy SoJ.
@@TeruteruBozusama Are you sure? According to Capcom, Spirit of Justice met its sales expectations. Maybe there's some story about development being hell, but the game didn't flop.
You gotta do one on Capcom Fighting All-Stars. That looked like it was gonna be a proper crossover of Capcom's fighting IPs without the aid of Marvel to fill the roster. You know instead of the cluster of recycled assets that was Capcom Fighting Evolution (or Jam outside of the US), which I'm right now watching your let's play video of.
Excellent video! I'm one of the people that adores this game (because I didn't play it for the story) so much that I even bought the soundtrack and action figure. The swinging, the music and sound design, the weapon and combat mechanics all blew me away that I replayed it twice (not in a row) after beating it. There aren't many, but you can spot people who have seen past this games flaws and love what it was able to do (mostly) with the unique direction it took. There's a good amount of reviews on Steam written by people who, like me, have a passion for this game.
Fun fact about Simon Vicklund: GRIN was actually his friend's game studio, which is how he got involved with Re-Armed. When GRIN went under, Vicklund became one of the founding members of Overkill. He does the music for Payday, and voices the character Bain.
I remember following the podcast from the development of this game. And hearing the American dude talking about how this was his push and his future probably hinged on this release as the binding link between the studio and capcom Japan.
Something you missed with Rearmed 2 is that for some reason it had always online DRM attached. That’s bad on it’s own but gets worse when you realise it was released 2 months before the infamous PSN attack, meaning that if you had the game on PS3 you couldn’t play it.
That little disclaimer is exactly how I feel about Capcom after watching some of these vids. I love the company, I love Ace Attorney, but I realize it's made quite a few mistakes in its very long existence. Keep up the great work!!
I remember legitimately enjoying Bionic Commando on it's release. (Yes. I bought the damn thing on it's release.) At first I was enjoying the game. Like the swinging and combat was a lot of fun from what I could remember and I remember having a very positive reaction to it. But then a character would open their mouths and I would start to worry. The dialog was pretty cringe for even 2009 standards. Like the original Gears had more compelling dialog and characters and I'm pretty sure half of that game was written by a sentient Mountain Dew can. By the end of the game, I honestly felt that the games presentation, dialog, world, like anything that wasn't me pressing buttons or listening to the music (Which was pretty great orchestrated stuff) was trying it's best to derail my experience. By the time the "wife-arm" twist was shown... Man, I dunno what the right word for it was. Numb? It was just another moment in a laundry list of really stupid stuff. Like, the stupidity of the twist was appropriate to the stupidity of the dialog and everything that was happening. Hey! Fun thing about Fortress! It wasn't JUST a Final Fantasy spin-off game... IT WAS GOING TO BE A DIRECT SEQUEL TO FINAL FANTASY XII. You were going to play as Basch (cool!) and he was going to be in a relationship or something with Ashe (huh- alright?) but by the end of the game she would have developed feelings for that kid Larsa (wait. what?) and they would marry and Basch would die but be resurrected as a sea king (brain 404 error).
I played this game as a kid, without ever playing the first one, and I honestly loved it. I even liked the twist, thought I was probably around 13 at the time.
I've been dying for this video but do you ever think that you have an obsession with Capcom and The Simpsons I've been watching since the beginning and those two things are a staple of this beautiful channel
Ive always loved BC and this game was great until the damn twist and final section (the movement restriction mechanic was pretty bad). Dark Void was also pretty solid. Also, Chaos Legion at the end? You keep showing games I enjoyed despite their shortcomings
I really like Bionic Commando. It's not a perfect game but the score was fantastic and when all of the elements of gameplay really meshed together it was a lot of fun.
I tried playing Terminator Salvation coop. There's a vehicle scene early on where you man the turret and shoot down HKs. In coop mode, both players where in separate vehicles. They also increased the amount of enemies. The problem was they didn't adjust the ai for 2 players, so all the enemies would only attack player 1. Also, Wanted Weapons Of Fate is a very fun game!
Honestly, the fact they made three games at the same time with the same engine is pretty impressive. I got Bionic Commando pre owned for like £3 and it wasn't terrible, just not great. So if the other two games were of a similar quality I've gotta give them some credit for releasing games that were at least half decent.
I just finished playing this game from 2009, in 2023! I'm a big marvel fan, big fan of mvc3 obviously, mad either my mission to be a master of capcom as much as I am marvel. Finally made my way to the bionic commando, and I gotta say, I had a whole lot of fun with this game. For 2009 this games actually looks kinda pretty, and I thought the gameplay loop was super fun. The story was just so so dissapointing. Honestly such a waste. The music and concept alone deserve a much better story. At least he's pretty cool in mvc
Just from looking at the gameplay here, Bionic Commander looks like it could be a very fun game with it's swinging mechanic. Imagine a new game where you can latch onto any surface and swing around like Spider-Man and doing whatever you do in this franchise.
I loved bionic commando rearmed as a kid, and didn't realize it was a remake. It promoted the 3rd person shooter and i always wanted to play it... Until i found out what Spencer's arm is made of
I want to see the timeline where they made the game with the 3d environment and mechanics and all that, but followed the original storyline/tone, and used THAT art style/aesthetic.
Another game that I always thought would be perfect for this show, but didn’t think about it until now. It’s always extra frustrating seeing reboots of dormant franchises fail, since they can take down those IPs for an even longer time, as we saw here. Also, I know I recommended Hiveswap already, but I think I might to again due to, em, recent developments since then.
I'm glad Capcom pulled itself out of the dark age that was the seventh console generation. Not that they didn't have good games at the time, they did, but it was an era where a lot of Japanese game developers seemed to struggle with changing trends.
And also sooo many of the highly regarded games were pretty much cover based shooters, god I hated the 7th gen and honestly I would defend so many of capcom's bad decisions cause 7th gen was also the era where studios were closing left and right and didnt want that for capcom
OH! Wanted: Weapons of Fate! I actually remember that game! I actually was working with Babel Media as a game tester back when it was in development. I quite enjoyed it despite it being somewhat incomplete at the time.
I really liked Weapons of Fate alot. Yeah it wasn't the best (also 3 hours long), but I'll be damned if I didn't replay it multiple times when it came out. The curved bullet mechanic gave it a unique twist to the gunplay. I wish another game studio would take a crack at the Wanted IP again, but base it on the comic series as opposed to the film.
@@cristianlopez_8486 Oh, definitely. Honestly W:WoF was probably a close second favourite for me to play while I was at Babel Media, second to Indiana Jones & The Staff of Kings. I really enjoyed the mechanics, as you said. Funnily enough, I found a bug after it was released; apparently it didn't know how to handle flight sticks, and caused it to crash on load. I ended up telling me boss to let the devs know. No idea if they ever patched it out.
@@TheEDFLegacy I think Remedy would be a solid studio to do a standalone Wanted game imo, especially with their history with 3rd person shooters like Alan Wake and Max Payne.

Been really depressed with grief since my mom passed last year from cancer and things now aren't any better since my sibling moved in. This series though never fails to bring a smile, informative and funny, this is definitely one of my favorite series I've ever seen on RUclips, thanks for bringing some happy times Matt.
How are you holding up Blue Zilla25? I’m sorry for your loss :(
Sure buddy sure 😅😅😅
I sometimes worry whether Matt enjoys making these but then I remember that he's a huge fan of AVGN. As a long time fan of both Matt and James, after watching every episode of AVGN and this series multiple times, I personally consider the "Wha Happun" series on par with James' best works. Thanks for making these Matt they are excellent entertainment/ edutainment and I hope you continue to make them for years to come. Once my scholarship funding starts coming in I'll definitely be putting some discretionary income to supporting your art.
Honestly aesthetics and story aside this game is decent. The swinging mechanics are fun actually
It's fun just looking at it.
It Is much better than ghost of tsushima a boring generic open world game
@@gravityrushfan299There are not enough ellipses in the world for a proper response to this.
Soundtrack is glorious too
I only remember this game as the game that is the exception to the rule that grappling hooks make every game better
That reminds me of Megaman Zero 2 (also by Capcom). That grappling hook weapon was fun and then they turn it into a god-damn pogo stick for the third game in the series. WTF?
I actually loved the grappling in the game.
Really, the grappling hook was pretty good. What wasn't was the way the game'd whap you on the head if you tried to go off the intended path with it.
@@rna151 true, should have been much more open ended and have added alternative rutes that demanded better use of the momentum based swinging.
the grappling hook was the only really good part of the game lol.
I feel like Capcom should have taken that engine and made their own 3D Bionic Commando
My favorite What Happened episodes are the ones on games that flopped so silently that I've forgotten they even happened.
I'd love to see a What Happened on Fuse by Insomniac. One of the most heartbreaking games, still makes me sad when I see that first teaer trailer.
I think EA made Insomniac change the tone of Fuse to appeal to more people. The original concept with more wacky characters and weapons didn't appeal to the audience that EA wanted: the people who typically buy gray, natural-looking shooters.
@@JangoTheBlueFox I agree, but I guess EA didn't have enough faith in Insomniac's original vision.
If you play as Naya it at least becomes more interesting with her invisibility
Those clips of Chaos Legion at the end unlocked primordial memories in me
>Be Capcom
>It 2003
>Drops game apparently based off a light novel no one ever read
>Destroys earbuds and declares the name of game in a southern accent
>Refuses to elaborate
>Leaves
I loved playing that game on PC because it was the closest thing to a Devil May Cry port at the time.
I kinda like Chaos Legion tho, the artsyle and concept is intriguing enough for me to finish it. The gameplay could do some work tho.
Man the NES Bionic Commando was such a great game.
Greatest game ever!!!!!
I loved the NES Bionic Commando. It was one of the few games I owned as a kid and I played it to death.
Lord I remember playing this game in my teens. I did beat it because it did do the arm swing mechanic well enough to be fun but what a weird period it was to be a Capcom fan (especially considering what happened the year after).
"Say the line, Matt!"
"It was the style at the time"
"Yaaaaaaaaay!"
Hearing Matt cheer with excitement on this show at 17:26 was unexpected, and it genuinely put a smile on my face
I absolutely loved it!
Sure the story wasn't that good, but the gameplay was very solid.
Damn a lot of Square's choices pissed me off. I liked FF12 and would've loved to see that
We wouldn't have PAYDAY if not for that though, so it's not all bad. Be more mad at Bo Andersson for being a shitty CEO not once, but twice.
@@thecalldron Well, we've got PAYDAY. That's even worse.
Square Enix really gave Grin the Ol' Yeller treatment.
I'd like to see a What Happened to Evolve. It seemed like it was gonna be a big hit but went out with a whimper.
Evolve sounded like the sort of thing that was doomed from the very start, regardless of its quality. That particular variety of complex asynchronous multiplayer just asks too much out of the players.
Evolve stumbled out of the gate and broke its neck on impact so the asymmetrical multiplayer horror game genre could run.
Command and Conquer 4 or Mother 3 please!

@@TeruteruBozusama wait a sec. What?!
@@DestinyZX1 the only game in the west for a long while after It was the trilogy again, which many site as the series' "life support" until Dai Gyakuten came out here too, had it done better the series probably continued on and we would've at least had 7 by now. I... Personally didn't like it that much, I don't like the characterizations, but I even bought the game twice as I did want to like it. Dual Destinies did fine, but many didn't like it either (I liked it a lot though), so they didn't buy SoJ.
@@TeruteruBozusama
Are you sure?
Fun fact about Simon Vicklund:
GRIN was actually his friend's game studio, which is how he got involved with Re-Armed. When GRIN went under, Vicklund became one of the founding members of Overkill. He does the music for Payday, and voices the character Bain.
Since you used footage of it at the end and it's a Capcom game, I'd love to see Chaos Legion!
The whole story, its concept and execution sucks, but I honestly enjoy this game for what it is.
And I like Mike Patton’s voice so there’s also that
I remember following the podcast from the development of this game. And hearing the American dude talking about how this was his push and his future probably hinged on this release as the binding link between the studio and capcom Japan.
I actually fucking loved Bionic Commando, I always wanted them to tighten the mechanics and make a second one RIP
This is my new favorite show on RUclips. So informative and entertaining. Never stop making these!
Had one of the best Main using piano themes ever. Genius piece”
Yeah, the mid-2010s weren't a fun time to be a Capcom fan.
@@glacierwolf2155 I'm glad I became one in 2020 then :)
You deserve 1mil, the effort put into this series is really really appreciated.
Of course we want Chaos Legion now, Matt
Ive always loved BC and this game was great until the damn twist and final section (the movement restriction mechanic was pretty bad). Dark Void was also pretty solid. Also, Chaos Legion at the end? You keep showing games I enjoyed despite their shortcomings
What about lost planet a Monhun prototype
I actually have chaos legion but I just never have gotten around to playing it, need to change that one of these days
Yeah, I agree with this. I enjoyed BC, as strange as Spencer with white guy dreads was, up until that final section.
@@haruhisuzumiya6650 I don't think you can call lost planet a monster hunter prototype since monster hunter was a thing all the way back on the PS2.

You've know you messed up when your big budget gaming revival gets outsold by two cheaply made licensed games .
You could say that Patton’s involvement was a midlife crisis.
Swingin' in to the new What Happun' episode right on time for my start of the weekend.
Genuinely, I would love to see what marketing or otherwise blunder made God Hand flounder as hard as it did, despite now being a cult classic to many.
Ah, old Capcom. Wha Happun Fuel!
Just from looking at the gameplay here, Bionic Commander looks like it could be a very fun game with it's swinging mechanic. Imagine a new game where you can latch onto any surface and swing around like Spider-Man and doing whatever you do in this franchise.
"What Happened?"
Well, for starters, THEY MADE SPENCER'S WIFE INTO HIS ARM!

I could swear there was a room with that exact same design in Resident Evil 4
I want to see the timeline where they made the game with the 3d environment and mechanics and all that, but followed the original storyline/tone, and used THAT art style/aesthetic.
Bionic Commando’s plot in a nutshell: “My wife’s inside me.”
Very Evangelion if you ask me...

Aw man I was so hoping to hear the Ichiro Mizuki song in this video and you delivered. RIP to a god damn legend.
Let me guess, Sarah situation.

I actually love this game. Got it stupid cheap and loved it. The big mechanic worm boss was awesome

I actually enjoyed this game a lot, the difficult swinging controls were extremely fun when you got it down. The story was whatever, but I had a hell of a time trying to kill my buddies in multiplayer.
I was super disappointed that, by the time I bought the game, the multiplayer was dead. I remember having to be on at 3pm just to find 5 people max. :(
I'm honestly surprised that they brought back Spencer with that same design on MVC Infinite
So uhh it got outsold in it's launch week in Japan by a censored all ages H-Game on the Xbox 360
