It's a small detail, but something that really drove me towards trying to find all the Crests as a kid.

There's a reason I picked up speedrunning this game after finishing a casual playthrough of it some years back! Always happy to see this game get yet more love out on the wide world of the internet. Tight movement that you can quickly get very good at, bosses that are tough as nails but you can eventually nail down their patterns, but man the best part is the music. Dark, gothic, haunting, even at its most triumphant. Big agree of it being one of the best on the SNES.

I read somewhere that Firebrand is trapped in a loop, as he discards the Crests @34:34 that initially fall down into the world, as told by the game's intro (a Paradox caused by the Time Crest). Sad to see the coverage for the story implications of the final Demon Boss to be completely skipped..

Your intros continue to be a major highlight. You're very skilled at providing context. I first encountered Demon's Crest well after release. I borrowed it about 15 years ago from a friend's then-girlfriend who wound up with her brother's SNES collection. I was floored by the game's atmosphere, but I didn't get very far before I had to return it. Fast forward to much later, and I wound up getting that very cartridge in exchange for my extra SNES Classic. I didn't give the game a proper go, however, until it hit Switch Online. In retrospect, it does seem really weird that so many abilities and items are redundant, but that selection does allow for a great variety of new player experiences. For example, I didn't get the air form for a very long time and fought both Belth and Flier without it.
Fun fact: If you don't beat the final Arma battle but at least not beat the water and ice palace , you can go to Phalanx Castle and strait to the boss. You just get the first phase and Phalanx fails to use the crest of heaven. You will get the bad ending where Arma appears since he didn't seal himself in the crest of time for you. It's pretty cool.
This game is amazing. Passed it back in the 90s and still in awe when I replayed it about 2 years ago. One of the best game in the snes or any console.

The first time I beat the game I think I defeated Arma twice and then flame lord. Suddenly, Phalanx’s castle appeared, I entered, got immediately sent to Phalanx’s fight, beat him, watched the ending, and left after an admittedly awesome sprite of Arma, feeling extremely disappointed. @@Joey_Rhubarb Blasphemy! Rabbids are perfection in animated forms the insinuation that someone saying they don't like Rabbids is practically the same as saying they don't like breathing. From the TV show to the Mario crossover there is not a single flaw in any Rabbids material and the fact that you would dare say that even a single person out of the 7.3 billion of us doesn't like the Rabbids should be crime with the punishment of death.
Rabbids have various forms but in order to be considered a grunt, there has to be a superior that is a different species all together. There's a reason why although there is a King Goomba, he doesn't have that much power over Mario's world. Or there's a reason why King triple D isn't a waddle but has a handful of them as servants. Rabbids are more a wild subspecies than grunts.
@@ChaseVaccaro-ge3gk Retracting my earlier comment, there are people of the same species that can be superior like an alpha. As far as Bowser yes he's a koopa, but he controls the Troops, not ALL of the koopas (there are games that established that some koopas are peaceful). I guess it's more accurate to say that Rabbids in general are not grunts because they're like the Minions except they don't search for a 'boss". They are like a swarm with no queen (as far as I know).
When I played through demon's crest on the switch online service, I did it blind, so I didn't know about the air gargoyle. I'm pretty sure I did the wind tower first, but I didn't get the air crest until I had done pretty much everything else and looked it up. Honestly I think I enjoyed the game more not being able to skip over sections with the air gargoyle.
when it comes to Dragon Quest, there's probably no need to even give accessories to grunts to make players care for them because in 5 they added a system to recruit them. This system was then expanded into a spin-off where you fight using a party of 3 monsters that Nintendo Action called a chess game, causing me to miss out on it because they added no illustrations to clarify that they were being metaphorical and/or lying. The monsters were so popular that when DQM Joker had its own Dexit, fans were not happy. Even *palette swaps* were missed once they were gone, that's how attached fans were to their monsters!
Um excuse me it was one of my favorite SNES game. I bought it blind for cheap, and never regretted it. It's such a fun game, if a bit obtuse here and there
Always neat to see people talk about this game! ...Mainly because it's got presence in Distorted Travesty, and the more things that I can pretend people care about that game for, the better.
My theory for why so many returned it is something I can point back to a couple years ago. Y'see, I went to a friend's house, a 90s kid for sure, and we decided at one point to play games on the switch. I don't remember how exactly but he ended up in demons crest, and he could not beat the first boss for the life of him. I ended up giving suggestions because I never played it either, and it ended up working. I think it was that the first boss has a weak point, and you need to shoot the head. That probably did it in for a lot of kids who weren't used to the whole body *not* being a hurtbox. The total opposite could be true as well. Maybe they beat it so easily that they returned it to get something else. I was never someone who traded in games so it's foreign to me, but it seems to be relatively common. ..unless return means unopened. In which case they thought the main character was ugly lol.
One of my favorite games I've never 100%ed. At least not that I can remember. IIRC, the shadow spell can do damage to some enemies and bosses if you activate it basically on top of them.
You know dude i like your writing and showing games not many know of. I cant wait for you to tackle the Suikoden series one i love dearly and not many know of.
35:15 So you’re telling me, Firebrand went on this epic quest, found solace in the end-and then made a new nemesis because some magical knight wants to save a princess that some demon king wants to marry? That’s-funnily epic in a way lol
1:00 You should honestly do a video on Rocket Slime, it's one of those games that's just weird and niche enough to fit this channel. I mean it's the earthbound of Dragon Quest games, in that we only ever got the second game in the series localized and there are people willing to kill to get the 3rd one ported over.
30:34 Actually, you can. Demon Crest is so open-ended (which may be why there are some power-ups you can find that are useless compared to some, like the Air Gargoyle against most of the Fire Crest's abilities) you can actually show up before fighting Arma for the final time (before Phalanx even has time to prepare his defenses), or after only getting all of the Crests. Each time, the level gets longer and you unlock one of Phalanx's phase. You also get three different endings.
Played it, loved it. No idea how it could get negative sales when it was this good. I blame the 'Satanic Panic'. Would love to see Firebrand make a comeback, maybe give him Keith David's voice?
Firebrand is so badass, he already finished his entire quest before the game began, and the only reason he lost the crests is that Phalanx got a cheap shot on him when he was recovering from defeating the holder of the most powerful crest of all. And depending on your choices he may waltz straight up to Phalanx and kick his ass in return
As a counter to the air gargoyle you have to consider that 99% of players aren't gonna find it early on. They'll most likely go through the normal stage routes, fight the regular bosses and gain usefulness from items like the platform-fireballs. The game expects you to explore and eventually find the other forms. Going in later with the knowledge of item placements can lead you to planning those new routes and makes the game highly replayable. It's main issues for me come from the lack of quick switch for the fireballs. I understand they didn't wanna animate all the gargoyle forms, they're fine in the pause menu. Switching the fireballs, which doesn't affect Firebrand's sprite, needed quick switch. The Mario 64-style booting from stages feels more annoying here than in Mario 64. Also could a used a few of the first two games' RPG elements, mainly the flight limit early on. It's nice being able to fly forever, the level designs compensate for it, but feel like they'd be even more fun w/that extra platforming challenge before you eventually get unlimited flight. But the games too good. It's flaws don't matter. It is a work of art.
17:55 holy crap If only I would've known that earlier..... Beating him with just fire and earth was a SERIOUS pain in the backside, but eventually I managed to pull through
I never heard of this game. I only know Firebrand as that cool gargoyle from Marvel Vs Capcom. Man for SNES game this game is so beautiful. I love all of the cool monster sprites and the fact that you have different forms is so cool!!
Ah, man, Demon's Crest is one of the SNES's best hidden gems. I remember hearing about it on a Metroid fansite back in the early days of the internet, like 2001 or 2002, and I just had to play it. I convinced my parents to let me buy a copy on eBay, and the red cartridge was so cool. Sadly, I think I sold my SNES copy (I have regrets about selling a lot of my old games as a teen to buy more games, but alas) but I've played it on the Virtual Console of every system that it's available on. Took me forever to beat, like literal years, and I've never beaten the Dark Demon, either. Way too much trouble. I do have to say, that while I agree the game has a phenomenal soundtrack, I still prefer Super Metroid's, but then I am a bit biased towards my favorite game of all time.
Ay, another video on this game! And it sings praises of it where people saw none back in the day. It seems absurd to me that people legit didn't care for the Gargoyle's Quest and Demon's Crest Spinoffs and even threw this game under the bus at the time of release. It's either that or the same christians who panicked about the great satanic Dungeons and Dragons incident in the 80's had a death grip on what entertainment was allowed to be enjoyed also choked out Demon's Crest before it could be recognized for the masterpiece it is. I must thank you a ton for bringing more awareness!

I first played this game on nso and it was amazing and you are the first person to talk about the amazing intro
Man, I love this video. I played this all the way through like a year after its release.
Yeah, Air was always one of the last I picked up. I'd head straight for town and fight the eyeball first.
Always fun to see you cover some stuff you love, especially when it's as obscure as this.
when it comes to Dragon Quest, there's probably no need to even give accessories to grunts to make players care for them because in 5 they added a system to recruit them.
It's such a fun game, if a bit obtuse here and there
Yeah I kept getting lost when i played it on nintendo switch online
I have never heard of this game, I simply knew firebrand existed because marvel vs capcom happened
Always neat to see people talk about this game! ...Mainly because it's got presence in Distorted Travesty, and the more things that I can pretend people care about that game for, the better.
"Try to find a more horrific snes sprite"
Neo-exdeath would like to know your location
"Magical stones?" Obama chuckled. "You mean the Infinity gems?"
This is a really immersive game that was sorely overlooked.
Fun fact: due to gameboy studio, there actually still are gameboy games being developed!
I played this on the 3ds virtual console and I loved it!! It was a game I played more than most of my others
You know dude i like your writing and showing games not many know of.
I cant wait for you to tackle the Suikoden series one i love dearly and not many know of.
love demon's crest, oohh Mega Man X Command Mission would love to see that get a re-release too.
35:15 So you’re telling me, Firebrand went on this epic quest, found solace in the end-and then made a new nemesis because some magical knight wants to save a princess that some demon king wants to marry? That’s-funnily epic in a way lol
Bumbles mentioned Dragon Quest, that time I mixed up him and Designing For on Twitter finally paid off
I loved this game and I really wish got more attention, it truly is the best game I've ever played
"Look, I know he's had a couple off days lately, but Arma's my guy! No way that Firebrand will get anothAnd there goes the Crest... again."
the fact that firebrand is so popular he got into marvel vs capcom 3 is crazy to me
1:00
You should honestly do a video on Rocket Slime, it's one of those games that's just weird and niche enough to fit this channel. I mean it's the earthbound of Dragon Quest games, in that we only ever got the second game in the series localized and there are people willing to kill to get the 3rd one ported over.
Imma just wait here until this man blows up big time
I checked out this game based on this video alone and I ended up loving it. Thank you bumblino.
But also fuck you for making me play that final boss
I had the feeling when it was near the end that he either forgot about dark demon or was going to say “dark demon… no.”
The intro Music was sick

Actually, you can.
Demon's crest?! Nice!
If Bumble’s voice was any deeper he’d be Senator armstrong
Played it, loved it. No idea how it could get negative sales when it was this good. I blame the 'Satanic Panic'. Would love to see Firebrand make a comeback, maybe give him Keith David's voice?
Firebrand is so badass, he already finished his entire quest before the game began, and the only reason he lost the crests is that Phalanx got a cheap shot on him when he was recovering from defeating the holder of the most powerful crest of all.
And depending on your choices he may waltz straight up to Phalanx and kick his ass in return
Love this game. It falters in a few places, but it's sooo good.
11:50 Thank God you said it, the whole time I was just staring at those dudes like "Is no one gonna acknowledge the zombie-klansmen shambling about?!"
Mr sr professor bubbles Mac fumbles: drops a new video
My anti depressants: we weren’t expecting especially forces
I discovered Demon's Crest through the Nintendo SNES Online and really loved it. Glad to see I'm not the only one
Nice video! Glad to see this game getting some well-deserved love.
"This is the generation that had legal arguments over beanie babies." Ouch. I felt that in my soul.
“Best music on the Super Nintendo”
Donkey Kong Country: you dare challenge me?
I first found out about this game through the Somulo and Infinity Phalanx Mugen Bosses of all things, but I never thought much of it until this video.
Memory Unlocked.
I remember havung this game on the original Game Boy.
This, Bomber Man, and Dr. Mario lol
How was this not more popular? It's probably my most played SNES game...
You're the only person I've seen that even mentioned gargoyles quest. That was one of my first and favorite games
I FUCKING LOVE DEMON CREST
I remember playing some of this game on NSO. I didn’t know it had anything to do with ghosts and goblins
Demon's Crest is one of my favourite SNES games but I had NO IDEA that it was a spin-off of Ghosts n Goblins??? That's fucking awesome
