Demon's Crest: Uncovering the Best Game Few Ever Played

- Demon's Crest is a retro 2d side-scrolling action game for the Super Nintendo with an interesting history created by a Capcom development staff that previously worked on Mega Man. However, a tumultuous release and often cryptic gameplay never allowed it escape obscurity, though it is now remembered as a retro hidden gem.

I’ll never forget when I was 10-11 yrs old having my mom buy me this game at a toys r us because it was $20 compared to all the other games that costed $50-60. The cover and the images on the back looked really awesome to me, yet I never heard of it. I was blown away when I played it! All my friends I showed it to never heard of it but thought it was amazing too. Truly a hidden gem.
It's basically Megaman with different vertical mechanics and a dark gothic setting. I loved the shit out of it and wished there were sequels. The setting caught me up even more than Megaman X, and you better believe in MVC3 I made all my friends hate the MC of the game.
I was introduced to Firebrand with Gargoyle’s Quest on the Gameboy. I loved it. The passwords were easy to hack and it was tons of fun playing the game and also trying to crack passwords. I loved that game.
One of SNES' true classics. Good to see that it is getting more and more appreciated. The Gargoyle's Quest games on the NES were just as great.
Games? You mean game.
Would like to play a version today with devilmay cry elements to it,having weapons and forms.
It doesn’t remotely surprise me Capcom had a mini franchise that starred a Gargoyle
I really wish they would bring it back because imagine playing as Firebrand in a Spyro like game that has so much potential to be something really awesome
One of the best games that I have played in my life. I got the same feel of it when I played Blasphemous.
Interesting comparison! I really enjoyed Blasphemous too - I think it does mirror the difficulty of Demon's Crest pretty well. Thanks for watching!
@@theretrospectivegamer On the other hand. 💊I'm sharing Acts 2:38 also look for oneness about Jesus with anyone who wants it bless
@@theretrospectivegamer U can do also videos of new games or any other stuff u have talent bro
🔥🔥🔥nice I will be playing blasphemous now.
@pureprogress9359 it's amazing I'm almost done with it now. Addicted.
A real classic that was unfortunately not very well known at the time. I really enjoyed playing the game and exploring the different endings leading up to the grand finale. It got harder and harder this way, but it was worth the effort. And not to forget the great, orchestral and dark music. As cell phones got better I used some of the tracks as ringtones. Some people got a little scared when they heard my phone ring.
I'm just imagining the boss approaching theme as a ringtone lol
Still in my top 10 games of all time. The visual aesthetic and score were impeccable.
A brand new Demons Crest, Section Z, Jumping Flash, A good new Rygar, Brand new Legacy of Kain games, etc. would be awesome to play right about now!
I saw the 28 minutes, Im so proud of have experienced this game back in the day,
My name is Nobody and I did play that game. I still do.
DUDE I HAD THIS WHEN I WAS A KID
NEVER KNEW IT WAS SO SPECIAL UNTIL I WAS PLAYING IT IN 2013 AND I FOUND OUT THAT IN STORES IT WAS GOING FOR OVER A HUNDRED BUCKS....
I MEAN I ALWAYS LOVED IT OF COURSE. BUT DIDNT KNOW IT WAS SUCH A BIG DEAL.
This is actually my favorite game of all time oddly enough
same
It's up there for me. I take a few hours every few months and play through it again. I'm still always nervous running up on dark demon
It's incredible. I'm late to the game, but I'm glad they put this on Switch SNES.
I absolutely loved this game and it's one of my favorites to this day. And I'm really hoping that a remake will be done soon. My friend passed the game and noticed a secret code and then battled the secret boss. It took him about 20 minutes on average to defeat it. This game is legendary.
Demon's Crest was one of my favorite games and Gargoyles is one of my favorite shows. Seriously, you should watch it. Even now, it holds up extremely well.
Hey thanks for watching! I can still remember bit and pieces of that show and was really surprised to see it still has a following all these years later.
@@theretrospectivegamerseason 1 is good, season 2 is great! Season 3 we don't talk about...
Demon's crest is my favorite snes game ever....
I really enjoyed Demons Crest since I discovered it back in the 90’s in a friends computer emulator 😎🤙
Okay, I am so glad I randomly found your vid, especially with the intro; I'm a big fan of both IPs and remember hearing about the cartoon and asking a friend if it was connected to Capcom's Firebrand. I've watched a few people's overviews/recaps/reviews of this game and yours has been the only one that touched upon the coincidence.
I like how Fujiwara used a lot of words to say "We liked how beating certain Mavericks changed the stages of other Mavericks in Mega Man X and decided to emulate that." His approach to tweaking challenge strikes me as very similar to a Killer DM.
Also kudos for mentioning Maximo as a spiritual cousin to GnG.
I know this vid is 3 years old (and it looks like your channel may have gone dormant) but I have one minor complaint with your script; amoralism isn't a word; amorality is.
Yep, I don’t think I realized until my 30s that the reason the power goes out in Mandrill’s stage is due to Storm Eagle’s ship crashing there…
FYI there are several no-hit runs of this game on RUclips. That one boss you were stuck at where you needed to get the legendary upgrade to defeat it can be no-hit by abusing it's AI using walljumps toward the top of the right wall and then dropping down to take a shot when an opening occurs.
Thank you for this video.
I am a bit surprised that folks had a problem with it back in the day or consideredit unintuitive. There are some hard secrets, but it was a delight to explore, both in the over map and in the levels.
To wit; other than the freaking headbutt nightmare and the super secret final boss, it didn't strike me as too much more cryptic than Super Mario World.
Tldr: I love this game. It could really stand a remake Ala the Actraiser one, rather than FF7 remake.
Polish the spells and potions, expand the levels, call it a day. My opinion.
One thing in this game that took me a while to figure out is how to find the cave in the second area where you eventually find the buster ability. It took me a long time to find that. Once I found the buster, the rest of the game opened up.
Oh how I wish
I loved Gargoyles Quest, I was so surprised when I got it for the gameboy as a kid. I thought it's just a boring plarformer, but no, it was an actual good game with upgrades, Quests, NPCs, Towns etc. One of the best gameboy games!
Great music too.
Loved the game back on SNES. I had a Japanese cartridge so I had to play blindly, guessing and testing item effects. I think I beat it 100% or almost then.
And now I am close to the completion of it on Switch (I beat it yesterday but without one bottle…).
Still love the game. Great characters, gameplay, music, art. Shame the series is abandoned.
BEGINNING SCENE STARTING OUT WITH FIRST BOSS IS AMAZING
This is my fave game for the snes. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for taking the time to watch!
This video's got me interested in the game now. You probably deserve more views.
Did u play it? Its amazing
When Capcom makes a game about exploring literal hell and it's a masterpiece
Resident Evil, Street Fighter, Devil May Cry...
Good developers.
I picked this game up as a kid with low expectations. Loved it, especially the music. Sounded straight out of castlevania.
Me too. The box-art drew my attention.
I'd love to hear this game's OST reversioned with a contemporary Konami sound chip.
This is a great retrospective. I LOVE this game, and I think it's a masterpiece. You know how I can tell that it's a masterpiece? I have only really played the game on an extended rental back when it first came out in November 1994, and then a shorter rental during the summer of 1995, and I can still remember every stage, every boss battle, and every note of the soundtrack. What a game! I'm glad to see that there are others that appreciate it!
Played it during my first year of college in the mid 90s and loved it. Gameplay, graphics, story all amazing. Truely a hidden gem.
"You'll have to forgive me"
Absolutely the f*ck not. 🤣
I would love to see them resurrect the series. With modern graphics and the wider acceptance of mature ratings, they could go very dark and interesting places. Too bad modern game writers struggle with stories and dialog. I'm a bit concerned they would "modernize" it into an unrecognizable and inconsequential mess.
Thank God my dad bought this game. Idk why he did but I am super glad he did. I still remember the ultimate gargoyle code to this day. QFFF KNRR DDLR XGTQ
great review dude! will definetly try it out!
Started it a few hours ago...
...it's badass!

I believe you had to idle at the start menu for the start menu for the backstory to play.
A shame since I didn’t know the story first time around.
15:46
Remember, this was a time when manuals were standard, so players would likely read the booklet before playing.
Wish a Demon's Crest remake or remaster would be awesome
Excellent review of one of the darkest and coolest games for SNES on video game history 😎🤙
I remember this game as a child. I saw the cover with a demon with a skull in a local video rental store and begged my dad to rent it. At the moment i was just impressed by the cover but later at home the game blew me away, it was an action platformer like i never saw in my short life, Firebrand was very fun to play, he can jump, fly, swim, climb, shot fire from his mouth, the controls were great, the aesthetic of the game was this dark gothic yet colorful look. The lore was cool, it was full of secrets... Full package. Demon's Crest never got the recognition that deserves but it was a game that now echoes in the likes of Blasphemous and Dead Cells.
People keep saying that Super Castlevania 4 is the "moody&atmospheric" Castlevania game and i disagree... largely SCV4 came off as boring but THIS game shows how you make a proper atmospheric&gothic platformer.
i freaking loved this game. i was playing way back when and no one was really playing it back then either.... off topic i wish someone would remake wizards and warriors. also bionic commando , blaster master... man we had the best games... haha
they remade bionic commando in 2009
Interesting review, man. The details about it's development and your take on the gameplay where the best parts in my opinion.🐗
At the title, you might notice that Dimitri from Darkstalkers transforms into a similar form. Is that a reference I wonder?
Man, I hope you start getting views and comments. I’ll try to spread the word.
This sounds like a pretty early metroid-vania on the surface, with rpg elements, similar to modern roguelikes.
After the castlevania series and mega man series demons crest is my third favorite, if it would have a sequel or a series of its own just like the mega man series it would have been my second favorite after the castlevania series 😎🤙
Great game. I haven't gotten the best ending either. The level 3 headbutt game is too much for me.
I played the hell out of this game when it was out
This is by far my favorite non-RPG SNES game, just edging out Super Metroid, Castlevania IV and Sparkster
i finally beat this a few days ago, but got Firebrands bad ending. I was pissed lol. I need that ultimate crest I think, i dont know I have to look. And dude you got to headbutt them windows in the hud village for some cash.
Capcom should seriously consider trying to do something with this IP now. They could do so many cool things!
Absolutely loved everything about this game. I used to play it all the time and even got the best ending and all that. To me one of the finest releases on the SNES.
Demons Crest was terrifying! The enemies, locations, and music made the game legitimately scary.
That’s my favourite game❤
Met a Norwegian guy once on a World of Warcraft private server years ago. The two things we were talking about were our cats and this game. Definitely an underrepresented gem of a game.
I still love this game, too bad there is no physical release on a recent console.
could probably manage to get one of those overpriced boutique companies that re-release older games (not naming names but you should know exactly what im talking about) to do it if enough people emailed all those companies.
@@ian.swift.31614 i know right
Yeah, I did love this game back in the day. It funny that while this game didn't get much recognition, it's one of the hardest and most expensive games to find.
i was lucky my uncle got this, we enjoyed the hell out of it, played the snes one over couple of years, discovering everything by ourselved. i have awesome childhood memories of this game
I actually played all the way through this game when I was home sick with covid. Amazing game.
I remember being so hyped about this game. I had to order it because I couldn't find it at retail. It got terrible reviews and I never understood why.
because in the US there was still a very strong Christian presence and resistance to anything remotely Satanic especially in 94. remember in 95 and 96 there were all those huge picket protests of even Marilyn Manson concerts... of all things.
Holy shit. I owned these games on my gameboy.
I lost it and could never remember it.
This game was AMAZING. Specifically the non side scrolling parts
I played this on my Wii U. Good game.
A game on Wii U you didn't expect much of it, but strangely, kept playing.
@@Mr_G_s_Route_66 I know the Wii U got shit on a lot but aside from having to replace the analog sticks a couple times I really liked it.
@powercage Of course, third party-support was the problem, not that the Wii U was a bad console.
I can imagine you really liked that Zelda Battleground game. (forgot the name)
As I watched the RUclips-walktroughs.
And then you had Pikmin 3 as well, which showed beautiful graphics, compared to Xbox 360/PS3.
@@Mr_G_s_Route_66 Yeah man, that game was pretty fun.
I don't remember how I got this game. Birthday? Christmas? Maybe even Easter. I still have this game, it survived the unfortunate event that led to the loss of all my SNES, NES, and N64 games. When I found this game in a different box I was pretty happy, played the hell out of it that day. I'm glad I still have it, way too hard to find nowadays.
playing it now for the first time, great game and great video!
The way the ground moves is so cool
one of the best games i've ever played, the only con is that it's a little bit short, but everything you find feels useful, not like dark souls 3 crapy buffs or flashy weapons that do jack shit
Had this one on cartridge back when SNES was actually relevant. Got it cheap to boot, and absolutely loved it.
damn that title screen gave me goosebumps when the cloak spread out.
I did play it back in 1998 in my SNES and finished it with the good ending, I'm proud of that
This was one of my favorite games when I was a kid.
I love the game.
Man... i loved this game. Crazy that releases can be so sporadic.
Remember hearing about this in Nintendo Power, came across it at a used game store for 15 bucks and snapped it the fuck up. It may not be 24/7, but I think Fujiwara achieved his dream of a game you buy once and want to play for life.
quality work of making video. Nice job sir you got a sub :))
It was a great game. It went so hard that it didn't even want you playing itself if you weren't going to put 100% effort into it. Unless you found the crest of air, the game forced you to fight Phalanx after level 4 and gave you a bad ending. But if you stuck it out, you actually got a total of around 12 stages, and a sort of "new game plus" mode. Really pushed the censors, too. The flesh melted off your bones when you died, there was an enemy that ate corpses and reanimated them inside its own body ... pretty wild stuff. And honestly, it was cryptic, but fair. If you kept your eyes open, you could pretty much find just about any secret on your own without the use of a guide.
I put dozens of hours into Demon's Crest when it released. I miss those days. :( Adulting sucks.
I always loved the soundtrack.
Gargoyles was released for the Genesis in 1995, it's a well made 2D action game, based on the animated series. Around 80 out of 100 ratings.
This is the perfect game for modern souls gamers that want to jump into something older. The menu system will not be an issue for them and the ambiguous shape of the world and exploration would scratch those itches.
Loved that game! Too short, too easy, but tons of fun!
Well there's the problem then, they made it confusing and misdirecting all right, so much so that I never made it past the first level on my rental, took it back, and never thought about the game again. Given the time period I simply assumed the level design was bad on accident, I wouldn't have guessed they did it on purpose. I don't blame anyone else for passing it by, either. Doesn't matter how much fun stuff you plan in later, if enpugh players don't make it into the game to begin with, your game doesn't exist.
Great game! I remember renting it at Blockbuster a few times until I beat it. Couldn't find it anywhere else but Blockbuster lol.
Possibly the most underrated SNES action platformer.
I playd it as kid everyday on win xp. i still play it. so cool. lets hope there will make a remake or something :)
Demon's Crest, Top 5 SNES Games alongside Metroid 3 and Front Mission Gun Hazard.
The true last boss is beyond diabolical.
Loved it, a remake would be sick
This is one of the games i stumbled upon by chance while trying out random snes roms with the newly (for me) discovered technology known as emulation in mid 2000's. Never got aroumd to beating it but played the first 1/3 or so about 20 times haha loved it though!
Firebrand also appears on SNK VS Capcom
With that bunch of remakes.. ffs Even actraiser got one, and the master don´t even show in any fighting game, i´m hopefull for some love for Demons Crest too.
Many played this game. It's awesome. :)
I... tried playing this game some time back. The headbutt mechanic is so jank. Not to mention the brutal final bosses. It goes from Challenging to Unwinnable. I wouldn't mind a reimagining of this game if they could fix the controls and the enemy balance.
Needless to say, it was not a fun experience.
I didn't know until a few days ago that this game wasn't well known, it was one of my top 5 favorite SNES games. Though to be honest I don't think I showed it to my friends
one of my first game boy games
I loved the graphics, but it was too heard at start to waste money on, so I avoided it. I've always wanted to get through the Arcade version and also the SNES.
The negative sales is very very very likely to be true. I had a similar story with SNES Frankenstein, which is very similar to Demon Crest.
Back in the 90s game consoles were for really young kids and associated with mascots like Mario or Sonic
From my younger self perspective the game was ugly and violent, and I got stuck early on because it required reading which is unintuitive for young kids. Kids didn't get complex commands like pressing up to speak to an NPC or even using the shoulder buttons. The demon theme was bad given the 90s were very Christian, add SNES games being expensive for parents.
So yes It's entirely possible.
That game intro reminded me a lot of darkstalkers
great video! how about the whole series video? will be awesome! * 0 *
Hah! I've only played a very small amount of the other games. I know one is in Switch Online for Gameboy. I should give it more time.
@@theretrospectivegamer will be awesome! i think the game boy one and the super nintendo one are in switch on line. saddly, the NES one don't.
When I was like 7 I saw this game and wasn't interested b/c I didn't want to play as an ugly bald demon thing. My guess is that's why most people weren't interested.
Best enjoyed at 1.5x
Disney+ has it right
Demon's Crest rules!!!!
this definitely needs a remake
