The reason the facial animations were so good, is because the face model was blank, with the eyes and mouth layered over it, so they could just change the face texture to simulate animation. Gave the game a real anime feel and I wonder why more games don't use this technique.
Lmao me too. I randomly found out about the Megaman Legends 3 devroom as it was happening. I literally had to watch my dream game crash and burn. I was planning on buying a 3ds just to play it. I ended up buying my first 3ds in 2022 for my kid because of Yokai Watch, lmao.
This game is one of those childhood fever dreams because I remember it but hardly anyone talks about it. I remember the pirate robots that blew up buildings. I let it blow them all up until the town had no buildings left and it was just flat lol

But this was unique because it played like a Metroid-Vania, before that term existed. I mean, look at what you do. You explore to get money, buy equipment, explore more, find something in the ruins or gain something from a boss/exploration that allows you to unlock more of the map to continue exploring. The elements are all there.

i was so scared of this game when i was young. it was hard. but the side quests and hidden mechanics, customization, story, setting (i looooved uptown and outside of town where the gang hides as a kid), man there was so much to love about MML1 and 2. i played MML1 again a few years ago, and it's still tough but was a ton of fun.
For anyone wondering why the undeground/ruins music sounds the way it does; Mega Man Legends' soundtrack was composed by the same person who made the music for Resident Evil 1(not Directors Cut), 2, and Dino Crisis 1-2.

20+ years since this game came out and there's not many in that entire time that had atmosphere like this game. Going into a ruin felt like really exploring a very dangerous and forbidding place left by an ancient advanced civilization. That's become such a heavily used trope by huge companies like Squeenix but it's rarely been done so well as in MML.
I’m glad people are as enamoured with this game as I was when I first played it. It’s a shame it’s neglected by capcom, I hope for a remaster or collection or even remake but I think we won’t see it
Yes, this game absolutely still holds up today. Setting the controls to turn with the D-Pad and strafing with the shoulder buttons feels much more natural. I could never get used to the default setting of turning with the shoulder buttons and strafing with the D-Pad. Just feels off. The Misadventures of Tron Bonne and Mega Man Legends 2 are still worth playing today as well, although Legends 2 doesn't have the same feel/charm to it as 1.
@@GoodVibeCollecting I also don't like that Legends 2 was a cliffhanger. It would have been all right if they actually made the sequel. Perhaps if we spread the word and build interest in the Legend games it will finally get made. Not holding my breath.
I just played through the Legends series for the first time pretty recently and one thing it does exceptionally well is the charm. This series oozes charm. Definitely a series I'd like to replay. Hoping for a proper Legacy Collection soon!
There's a secret in the shopping mall: if you keep kicking soda cans into the bakery, your armor will slowly turn black, and you'll eventually turn into Evil/Dark Megaman.
There's other actions you can do that influence this hidden "morality" value. Doing bad things makes you darker and doing good deeds, like returning the stolen money in that one mission or donating for repairs makes you lighter. This mechanic was kept and enhanced for the sequel.
I believe people are hoping Capcom will eventually release a Megaman Legends Legacy Collection sometime soon, especially since the others worked out. With the remastered games and all. I wouldnt mind.... but i personally would LOVE a remake of both Legends 1 and 2. I love L1 but the gameplay is a bit archaic 😅 I would love a remade gameplay style: maybe something similar to a Rachet and Clank clone...? Beautiful new graphics, new voice actors, that was Megaman's voice (and the others) will be consistent. Additional features, dungeons to dig and find treasures, new town missions, little story details to fill in minor plot holes, etc etc. Then if the remakes sell well, which i believe that they will, they can finally make a Legends 3
I was very surprised by how well Mega Man Legends has aged in terms of game design though. The controls are definitely a bit archaic, but once you get used to it, everything feels pretty great.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but FYI Mega Man 64 (the N64 version of MM Legends) has analog control! It feels WAYYY better than Legends on PS1. My only hesitation in recommending it, is that the awesome credits theme from the PS1 version is replaced with a MIDI song ;~;. That song is nowhere near as good! Man the ruins and enemy design are so creepy. I probably put a thousand hours into this game when i was a kid just exploring the world and ruins. They really did a good job at making you feel like an explorer
Megaman legends/ megaman 64 is a very charming game. it's very short but i loved the game. I have the n64 version and loved it. i liked the voice acting and the dialogue. i feel like capcom dopped the ball on making legends 3. i don't thinking mm3 if it came out today would be the same. dialogue in anime and cartoons have changed so much that they might try to adapt to the writing of today ( at lease for the English dialogue).
Lovely video! Your analysis are incredibly in-depth without being overwhelming. Although I disagree a bit with the Gesellshaft fight, I can understand the point being made. On a personal note, I loved the Legends series so much as a child that when I replayed it as an adult I got that feeling that... It still holds up! Even with the cluncky controls, both games are, overall, designed around them, making it not as much of a razzle. Besides that, the level design is top-notch in both games. Speaking of the second, they managed to up-scale the game in every way, both in level and map design, combat and controls (a lock-on system closer to Zelda's being the best introduction to it). Overall, Legends 2 is my second favorite game on PS1, both due to how much I love this series and for how it's still a great game. BTW, pretty happy to see indie developers bringing this art style back, both on animations as in other games.
I rented this game from Blockbuster for the n64. I remember NOT creating my own save file, but instead jumping into one where the last Player allowed the ENTIRE town to be destroyed. Even in my own playthroughs I could not achieve the devastation that this guy unleashed on Cattlox island. Something that was not conveyed well, is that you can search holes in the walls of dungeons to find bonus stuff. The flat low-res textures did not stand out enough for me to think "huh maybe I can interact with this," it just looked like... A regular ruins. Also shoutout to the audio mixing being absolute ass. The can in the mall isn't useless, If you kick it behind the bakery counter you can get 1000 zenny and the can respawns every time you come back allowing you to have infinite zenny from early game
The first Megaman Legends is never not amazing no matter how many times i replayed this game again and again. the exploration just feel right, you actually feel rewarded for exploring. it even has sidequest, just a few but all interesting. this and Castlevania SoTN always be the top ps1 games for me
@@gnosis_gaming mate of course 😂 I personally never really played through TMAO Tron, just the beginning but I've seen playthroughs of it. It's decent but the story is charming. Not to mention, some characters in this game returns for the next. Legends 2 is more than worth it though. The gameplay is better, the story finally answers the question L1 left us with. The digs are fun, the world is much more expansive, etc etc etc. I won't spoil anything that way you can properly enjoy it but my only gripe with this game is Megaman's voice..... not a fan lol 😅 But yeah, Legends 2 is definitely worth it if you loved the first one 👍
Legends is one of my all-time favorite video game series. The PS1 was stuffed totally full with bangers, and definitely has one of the greatest libraries of any console ever developed, and even with that, Legends stands near the top, owing to its' immense charm, poise, and effortless confidence in itself as a series of products; It knew exactly what it was, and executed it with total aplomb. I initially had zero interest in the 3DS, but the day that Capcom announced Legends 3, I went and bought one specifically and expressly for it. Capcom cancelling the title shortly after was a source of intense, bitter disappointment the likes of which I hadn't felt since Grandia was passed over for a North American Saturn release. To this day, it still annoys me that it never happened. I'm losing hope too. The cast has aged out of the VA profession, sadly, with one of them being unfortunately deceased. It's a damn shame, as a huge part of Legends' presentation was its' stellar dub. It matched the spirit and delivery of its' Japanese counterpart wonderfully, a rarity in the world of localizations. An interesting aside: The composer for Legends and Legends 2, Makoto Tomozawa, also worked on Resident Evil on the PS1. This is especially evident in the creepy ambient music in several of the sub-gates and ruins that you explore throughout the games.
Dude played the entire game like a game journalist. i was hoping at 5 minutes you would say, the main tactic is push the left or right d-pad and the opposite shoulder button to kill 95% of enemies.
If you kick the can into the Jetlag Bakery you'll get 1000 zenny. 😂 But beware if you do this too many times you will slowly grow evil. As a result your blue armor will grow darker.
As a child... 1st one was easy... the second? Not so much lol... but the gameplay was definitely great for the time and playing as a grown ass man I understood the story better...

Did you play the sequel by any chance?
@@gnosis_gaming I did! Enjoyed it but I never beat it.
I often wanted to give up on the first one lol. The boss fights were brutal for me. @@empty_melodies
Anything we can do to modernize the controls ?
I don't think so, unless there's a modded rom out there. But you get used to them.
The can in the mall isn't useless, If you kick it behind the bakery counter you can get 1000 zenny and the can respawns every time you come back allowing you to have infinite zenny from early game
The first Megaman Legends is never not amazing no matter how many times i replayed this game again and again. the exploration just feel right, you actually feel rewarded for exploring. it even has sidequest, just a few but all interesting. this and Castlevania SoTN always be the top ps1 games for me
What do you think about mm legends 2?
Will you be reviewing Legends 2? Or TMAO Tron?
I haven't played them yet! Should I?
@@gnosis_gaming mate of course 😂
I personally never really played through TMAO Tron, just the beginning but I've seen playthroughs of it. It's decent but the story is charming. Not to mention, some characters in this game returns for the next. Legends 2 is more than worth it though. The gameplay is better, the story finally answers the question L1 left us with. The digs are fun, the world is much more expansive, etc etc etc.
I won't spoil anything that way you can properly enjoy it but my only gripe with this game is Megaman's voice..... not a fan lol 😅
But yeah, Legends 2 is definitely worth it if you loved the first one 👍
Lmao I have subscribed to so many small channels who talk about Megaman Legends. It's my favorite series ever.
Remember being really bored jumping on top of cars and buildings and kicking over trash cans. Heh
Love this game. It was my first PS1 game if I remember correctly. Wish we could get a HD Remaster for Switch.
This game has aged really well! Even without HD, it'd just need a few tweaks to the camera to feel modern
You can change the controls in options. I prefer to use the alternative controls with an analog stick controller.
This game was amazing 100%
This era of 3d body with 2d art in face NEEDS TO COME BACK
Legends is one of my all-time favorite video game series.
Did you not know you could kick the can behind the bakery counter for some extra money?
Any sincere MegaMan Legends content is an instant like and sub for me! God bless!
Thank you!
Dude played the entire game like a game journalist. i was hoping at 5 minutes you would say, the main tactic is push the left or right d-pad and the opposite shoulder button to kill 95% of enemies.
i remember i used to kick that can for hours grinding money lol
I liked this game, but the one i played (rented from blockbuster) was bugged and wouldn't save
That sucks! Any plans to revisit it?
*sobbing in legends 3*
🤣
capcom better make dash3
Do you think there's any chance?
@@gnosis_gaming Yes, given their recent polls and questions. Matter of when
Mega Man Legends was one of the first video games I beat. 😂
😂 dude i love this game to this day. Your health is stressing me out
it's a 3d metroidvania like darksouls lol
If you kick the can into the Jetlag Bakery you'll get 1000 zenny. 😂 But beware if you do this too many times you will slowly grow evil. As a result your blue armor will grow darker.
If you manage to kick the can behind the counter at jetlag bakery, you are rewarded 1000 zenny, a great way for easy money early game! :D
Some of the cutscenes remind me of Pokemon while some enemies, especially bosses, look like from Digimon 😂
I see how dark your armour ended! You should be ashamed of yourself 😜
Haha, right at the end of the game I just ran around kicking everyone 🤣
But also impressive that they use in-game cutscene instead of pre-rendered.
(So we can see him as we play not fixed cutscenes)
20:40 The game gives you the opportunity to retreat.
If you kick the soda can into the bakery you get 1000 zenny 😁
If you are going to play this on an emulator then use duck station and enable most of the pgxp hacks to fix those wobbly textures and polygons.
As a child... 1st one was easy... the second? Not so much lol... but the gameplay was definitely great for the time and playing as a grown ass man I understood the story better...
Croftman! ❤
Watch capcom team up with Nightdive for a kex port.
Honestly, I don’t even like the main series. I don’t like mega man or x but I’ve always LOVED Legends.
megaman legends 2 now :3
21:30 It took forever as a kid but i beat it n u want the homing missiles honestly.
yeah my gear was underdeveloped
sure, if you can handle the outdated controls
for anyone else, remake has to be done
Hey man you know you can aim and move in circles while shooting lol
