The cameraman understood the assignment 😊
😂
Yeah, what was she doing with that wood again?
🤣🤣🤣
@@robertdalga128
She was definitely rubbing on it!!!
I estimate the thermostat was set to 63.8 F.
It’s beautiful how this process reveals the soft parts…of the wood 😊
Nothing soft about the wood she creates
I expect there are plenty of guys doing some wood work after watching this.
OMG this is perfect! Love the effect of the accentuated grain in the dark wood. Yes, gold or yellow in the black would have been good too. I'll try that.
Now I have to rewatch this video, I missed most of what she was showing...I was focusing on that mic for some reason 😀
Skyler I love that finish. Beautiful contrast!!!
Gentlemen, again we meet in appreciation of this fine ladies skills.
Ohhh what a lovely pair
Wow, mature there
You have nice "upper cabinets".
Very informative and very distracting at the same time. Thank you! 😊
You’re welcome 😊
😘
You’ve gained a new subscriber. I’m a professional woodworker. But I just couldn’t resist 😉
Shame on you…. if next we see only turtleneck tops, I’m blaming you. 😀
Beautiful.. love this look. I'll try it.
Best video I have ever seen!
It's look amazing!!! Thank you so much.
Excellent camera work, you know your target audience. Subscribed.
😅
Wow. I've been pondering since last year, how to make a two tone finish. And never seen yet anyone has done it really. Thanks!
Happy to help!
Really got my attention!
That’s a great way to put a finish on grainy wood. Thanks
Absolutely lovely stuff
Thank you Martin
Best video on youtube
That looks amazing! I’m going to give it a shot.
Yes is very fun. Just make sure the stain is completely dry and dont leave the top coat for too long. Wipe pretty much right away. Experiment with timing
nice, great work by the cameraman..............😁🤗
Great videos and tips thank you!
You are very welcome
I had been looking for such information, and actually set my project aside when I found your video! This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much!!
You are very welcome Paul. Thanks for watching
@@woodworkingwithSkylerGod bless you, good job, Good work
The results look great! I like to play with Rit fabric dye in coloring wood. Lots of colors lots of fun especially for craft type projects.
Great idea!
@@woodworkingwithSkyler Yes, this is what I was talking about in the reply I just left. I'll go you one better, I get mine at Dollar Tree!, lol. 60ml(2oz)) for $1.25(Canada). Tye dye, dyes. They actually work really well on wood, no mess or smell, UV protection, very colorfast, I've whole wash bleached a shirt I did with them a few times, in hot water, and the color barely even fades.
So many rackets out there. Home Depot, $25 for 8 oz, vs $5 if you know there is no magic in the home brand. Lol, I've used cayenne, turmeric, felt pens, food coloring, printer ink. Nothing holds up to the light, or stays separated at cellular level. Tye dye, the way to go.
peace
Im glad to have found your channel.🍻👍🏼
Welcome aboard!
Great tips!
Glad it was helpful!
Really usesfull information. Thank you!
You're very welcome!
Awesome video thank you
you are welcome
Thanks for sharing this video. This is a great looking finish. This is used on some guitars with various color combinations and always looks very cool.
Glad you like it!
Love this I am about to build a computer desk and saw this. I now know how it will be finished thanks
Hope you enjoy it! A desk should look beautiful. Make sure you experiment first with a scrap piece of same wood and seal it with a top coat
I use colored stain more than the wood tones. I do it a little different but similar to you. The black stain goes on and dries, then sand with 120 to get the low areas, then the second color (I like black and barn red) goes on and spot apply the black to fill in any spots. Fun video.
Love your videos.
So glad!
I was given a large amount of white oak and have been testing and searching for alternative finishes that won't give me the classic golden color. I tried some ceruse techniques yesterday but I think I rushed the drying times. It still gave me enough idea to see it's what I'll be using for my next project.
I liked the ink over the traditional stains, it is messy but it does give it a richer color. I'll try it again with more appropriate drying times. Thanks for the tip.
Fantastic ❤
Thanks 🤗
i love this channel so helpful
Thank you
beautiful work and work shop!
Love that hand rubbed finish
Is that another description of a happy ending?
Most viewers would have wood after watching this video.
After watching this, I really had a craving for a glass of milk! Strange!
WOW! Great vid. Would love to see more! lol
Thank you
Nice facade.
I think the next Guitar I build I'm going to try your method. Thank you.
You are very welcome. Just make sure you try with a piece of scrap wood first
Very cool. I have an old cabinet project comming up this i might use
Go for it!
Absolutely magnificent, I was transfixed, couldn't take my eyes off the screen.
One question, what were you doing with those bits of wood?
Absolutely magnificent 👍
Magnificent 💖💖
Thanks 😄
Raised my grain.
Mr. Ewing knows exactly what he's doing.
looks very nice rubbed into the wood.
Interesting video.
Thank you
I'm hypnotized
:)
i never seen such a tool to scrape my wood should i use this on hard wood or just soft wood ? beautiful result
Can this finish be sanded smooth since you have to raise the grain in order to get this effect, or does that grind away the raised grain to the point that the contrasting stain is removed?
i got Hardwood during this video
Makes you wanna shalack
why does she keep getting that piece of wood and tools etc. in the way of the video shot ? ❤

You explained this technique very well.
I subscribed to your channel and find your videos very informative.

Thank you Thomas
👏👏👏
That pink shirts the best! NICE rack!
This is an incredible and captivating video. But aren’t you going to do a wood staining presentation?
That looks awesome
Thank you. I like it too! I will be using this technique in different colors for the next few projects
Have you become more of a fan of the black ink since the previous ebonizing video? lol I couldn't help but notice the stain still on the bench 😅. I'm thinking black with red for a fiery burnt look would be awesome. Really good information again thank you! There are a lot of quality finishes you can take away from this video. Also... 😁
Well….. it’s growing on me. I didn’t try to clean the bench yet, need to buy some alcohol:)
I clicked for wood…and it delivered😂
😂😂😂
That was awesome and looked amazing
Thanks so much!
"Decorative grain fill" A' La George Franks. He recommended a weak solution of lye and water. This was flooded on and then the wood was wire brushed, then neutralized with weak vinegar solution. The lye melts the sap in the grain and more color can be squeegeed into the grain.
I once made 22 tables, in the early 1980's , for a restaurant - green aniline dye with yellow (Grumbacher) grain fill, in Oak. (the French sell a very fine bristle brass brush - hardware store wire brushes are too aggressive - IMO.
Sangat keren sekali hasilnya

Thank you so much! :)
Great video!
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it
i have a question for you.. i have natural timer floor not laminated. started to have some scratches how do i fix the tinting paint?
Raise grain with water wet and dry and repeat
Collings guitar company from Texas does this with different woods on their guitars.... they call this white on black "doghair" ... glad to see you showing the technique with the oak....
I like your channel... where are you from by the way?
Im am a woodworking carpenter in Utah, USA and also Finnish citizen
Thats awesome. I am from Romania originally
PRS is doing it now too.
Thank you for keeping us abreast of this tecknique
You are welcome
You just popped up on my RUclips, I guess since I love woodworking. I saw where you got the India ink on you and your bench. I believe alcohol will dissolve the ink. Anyhow, I subscribed to your channel. Thanks and I learned a couple of things about coloring the wood. Looks like it might penetrate the wood fairly deep and I will have to give it a try. Oh, have made this style of box, but never thought of making Kleenex boxes 🤔
Thanks for the tip about using alcohol to remove inl. Will give it a try. Thank you so much for the sub. I will make sure to post more videos soon but not for next week or so. Currently recovering from carpal tunnel surgery I had this Tuesday .

Would this also work with the ebonizing process you demonstrated using steel wool and vinegar?
Yes. But make sure is really dry. Like overnight dry
I very recently started woodworking and I’ve made a number of tissue box 📦 covers…dovetailed, mitred, but joint…however after watching your video I’ve definitely picked up a couple of tips to speed my work rate up.
Wonderful! Glad it was helpful
Your such a nice lady 😊😊💐

Could how have also used that homemade ebony stain from your other video as the first dark coat?
Yes
got dang...
I really hope you can help. I have built a bench and using a pc of plywood for bench top. Can you show the difference in a pc solid wood and a pc of plywood? Thank you!
I wouldn’t do this technique on plywood. Only on open pores woods
Just curious as to who are the makers of the white scratch pads that you use? I need to try that Odies oil that you use too.
Non-Scratch, Super Long-Lasting Scrubbing Pad 5 pk, 10x4.5in. Best Reusable Multipurpose Scouring Sponge for Home Surfaces. Perfect Pro Grade Multi-Surface Scrubber Pads for Light-Duty Indoor Cleaning. From mop mob on Amazon
This technique looks amazing with cabinets, but have only seen black/white and white/black. With Rubio's assortment of colors, you could really do some unique color combinations.
Yes, I am going to do some different colors in my next few projects
The microphone was nestled between them with care.
What did she do, I missed it!
I recently finished a set of tables for a restaurant using a similar technique that results in an almost opposite finish: black grain with lighter wood surrounding it. To achieve this, I used two water-based stains, black, and then whatever lighter color you wish for the main body color. First stain the piece black, then, after drying, sand off most of the black stain, so that it remains only in the grainy areas. Next, apply a coat of lighter color stain. Where there is black stain remaining in the "grain", it will slowly fade up through the lighter color stain, giving you a light colored wood with darker color in the grain.
Where do you buy or get the stain at
I bought mine on amazon. I put links to them in the description of the video
Hello S&S Could this technique be used on plywood,MDF,etc? And i wonder would you be up for a challenge?
Could you see if you could get a good finish on OSB board
The traditional way of painting it takes to many coats of paint and to much time..Thanks
I accidentally spilled some on my plywood bench and it turned dark gray. What is OSB board?
What Can it be Used For?
There’s a variety of DIY projects that OSB is fantastic for and you can use it for both interior and exterior use as it’s weather resistant (check for a stamp on the back of the board to make sure).
It’s regularly used for flooring because of its strength and it’s ideal for a workshop or shed. It can also be used for roof sheathing to go under your roofing system or as a sheathing on the walls.
But for a creative person or carpenter OSB can be used to create a multitude of different pieces of furniture or cabinetry as well. With a little creativity the sky is the limit with the endless options, headboards, noticeboards, drawers and wardrobes.
If you are thinking of using it in the garden, although it’s weather resistant, for permanent outdoor use you will probably want to add some further weather protection.
The weather resistant sealant will also only have been applied to the surface of the OSB so as soon as you make a cut into it you will want to add more sealant to ensure that water is not absorbed through the exposed material.
Hello S&S there are hardwood faced plywood sheets of 8by4 that this technique could work on?.
You can also use any natural colouring from Tea,coffee, beetroot or berries etc, as wood is absorbent it will just penetrate then if using wax you can heat gently to liquify as it makes it easier to apply, from a painter with 38yrs exp
Thank you. That’s an awesome tip! Will try that
I don’t know about you…. I’m have a hard time concentrating on the wood
By looking at the wood I got a wood
She should have scraped that wood faster and harder.😂
I’m puzzled as to how/why this works. If the black coats the lower fibers, and the white coats the raised grain, how does wiping it not remove the white from the higher surface?
It looks like the black coats the lower fibers AND raised grain, then dries. When you apply the white and wipe it off, you are removing the white from the raised grain, exposing the dried black color, and leaving the white on the lower grain.
That would make sense. However, it looked like it was the raised grain that held onto the white coat.
Not new or trendy, but thanks for trying.
It is called ceruse in French
Very cool! Thanks Sandrine!
This isn’t new. George Soderberg, taught this in his Finishing Technology course in 1973 at UW-Stout. See his text by the same name.
Maybe but nobody has heard of him.And I,m sure he doesn,t look like her😄😄😃
I really wanted to see this technique but I’m having trouble focusing.
:)
@@woodworkingwithSkyler You seem to revel in this kind of attention? :)
You didn’t compare the two types of ink finishes….
That's a lot of silicone...
New !!? - I was taught this technique in woodworking class at school 50+ years ago and it wasn’t ‘new’ then!
Yeah but I bet your teacher didn,t look like her😄
I've been trying this for a few months. I have had no luck with the either color being contained to a consistent grain. The same grain will be half of each color. ... I also have been trying to make iron acetate, as per your video, and 3 days later, the vinegar is still crystal clear, and paints clear as well. lol .. I must be missing a brain cell. peace *because I don't believe you are conning us, lol
Did you use 0000 steel wool? The finer the wool the better as it dissolves faster.
Did you use it on wood high in tenant like oak, mahogany, cherry, walnut etc? On wood that is low in tenant it will just turn gray. When I mixed my solution it stayed clear for about a week but I used it after 48 hours and it worked but took a good 30 min to turn black. The time of filming that video my solution was about 2 weeks old. Now the solution works pretty much in seconds almost instantly.
As for the two colors technique, did you use two colors of top coat? One should be a pigment ( a dye) and the second color should be a colored topcoat. Also make sure the pigment is really really dry before applying top coat. My dye is water based and top coat is oil based that way the top coat won’t reactivate the base colors to mix it in. Once applied the top coat pretty much immediately starts scrubbing it off ( takes a lot of elbow grease). If you feel the top coat is not protecting enough you can apply a clear coat on top once fully dry. I hope this helps. Let me know if works
@@woodworkingwithSkyler Hmm, interesting. Tyvm, it's funny, the details you miss even trying to be focused, cz you don't know they are key details! No I didn't use 0000, but I can wait for that one, good to know it's still coming. I might try a batch with sugar and/or salt. Idk why... lol... and I have been using water based dyes, and I knew actually, that water dissolves water, and oil does oil, but I'd let it dry for days, and it still lifts it up if you put too much... I was more focused on the grain, I thought it was the decider, but as you now know, it wasn't working that way, lol.
Have you seen the guy that burns the planks, then sands them, and only the broad dark grain is black, then he uses a neon stain, which disappointed me greatly, they look just amazing imo, but I thought that would be one of my contributions, though I dont think he is really a builder, or at all, but some people will pick up on it. Because the neon I was already doing, but the black I haven't figured out yet. I just completed a cabinet I finished in an orange/yellow, sunburst gradient. Like guitars, why can't we have beautiful colors for our furniture finishes. It does need to be done right, I think a neon pink dinner table probably would end up in clearance, but a neon chartreuse dinner table, in the right kitchen, gives me goosebumps, actually. I love color.
I've been trying everything for wood. Aspen ply, maple ply, Spruce-Fir-Pine, Douglas Fir- Larch, dimensional. I'm north.
Tx again, peace
