What It's Like Losing A Child To Gun Violence (HBO)

  • One Friday afternoon five years ago, Nelba Márquez-Greene sent two of her children to school in Newtown, Connecticut, and only got one back.
As a marriage and family therapist, she's well-versed in the language of trauma and grief. But her fluency has become a lot more personal since her 6-year-old daughter Ana was murdered in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.
Márquez-Greene now apportions her energy thoughtfully. She knows this month, more than the others, she needs extra space to grieve, work, and be a mother and wife - not that her emotional and personal responsibilities can be easily separated. She's the founder and director of the Ana Grace Project, founded in the memory of her daughter, that works to address social isolation and social justice in schools.
Márquez-Greene mourns the loss of her daughter, but she also mourns the version of herself that existed before the shooting: a woman with a naive but steadfast belief that she lived in a place where a mass display of gun violence could never happen.
“I would say that the only difference between the early days and now is that the shock has worn off,” Márquez-Greene said. “When you have lost a child, a beloved, prayed-for child, to gun violence, I will only say for us, it doesn't get better.”

That is not true. The thing that has incrased is the endless coverage by the anti-gun media. When I was in 6th grade over 50 years ago my 6th grade flag football team went to another school to play a game. The other team was all atwitter over what one student had done a few days before. Apparently he brought his dad's .45 acp pistol to school and was intent on getting even with a teacher for some reason. The teacher saw the gun and took off running while the kid took several shots at him. Teacher wasn't hurt and kid got appropriate punishment. The point is it wasn't on national news. It wasn't in the big city newspapers. It wasn't in the local newspapers. When I told my parents the story neither of them had heard about it. If the same thing had happened today it would have been on CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC etc. nonstop for weeks. Why? Could it be this is how the anti gun newsmedia wages war against the 2nd amendment?

You want to take the guns and soonoer or later the government will kill more people than what you save. Terrorists and criminals will kill more people than you save. If you stop people from driving you would stop 35,000 people from dying each year. If you closed hospitals and doctors offices, then 100s, of 1000s of people would not die from prescription drugs and medical accidents. You want to take the guns and give more power to the government, the same government, despite having dozens of incidents that they could have used with current law to adjudicate Cruz and take his guns. The FBI, and Sheriff stood down. Why? You won't touch that. You won't touch Big Pharma either and their role in doling out SSRIs and pain meds that kill far more people. You want the truth? You can't handle the truth.

ana would’ve been the same age as me. i can’t even begin to imagine how sad that could’ve been for her family. i will forever think of the students who were killed. everyone who thinks guns are good and gun violence think of how you would’ve felt if this had happened to you as a parent, as a sibling, and as a victim. exactly. you cannot even imagine it. the grief you would feel is unimaginable. rest in peace to all of the beautiful people who passed that day.

I dont even remember the sandy hook school shooting because i was like 7 when it happen but this specfic school shooting will always make me the saddest and the angriest like yes i know about the virgina tech masscare , the parkland masscare , the columbine shooting , the uvalde shooting but the sandy hook shooting could have been the last school shooting masscare of every school shooting that happen after 2012 but of course our lazy governemt allowed more school shootings to happen after 2012 if they would have fixed our school system after Sandy hook the uvalve shooting wouldnt have happen i cant believe its been 10 years since this tradgey and still nothing has been done the government has literally been talking in circles for years a mass shooting happens then media extravangza happens and then people get together for memorials people send their thoughts and prayers and then we have meetings about gun debates but end the end no REAL change ever really happens every thing goes back to normal and i literally cant believe its been 10 years today and nothing has changed and it took 10 years just to get a documentary on this sick person people been looking for answers as to why he did with he did for 10 years and still with
his documentry being out we still don't know the reason behind this elementary school shooting .

I'm the father of 13-year-old autistic twins who were shot to death by their own mother. Whenever someone reacts to hearing that with a sentence that begins, "Well, at least...", I want to punch that person in the face. This grieving mother is absolutely right...there is absolutely nothing redeeming about the murder of a child. There is no sentence that begins with "Well, at least..." that makes the parents of murdered children feel better. It just sounds phony and patronizing.

    • @tomogden2432
      @tomogden2432 6 лет назад +13

Creamy Autist - I've considered forgiving her, but the fact that she planned the murders for at least 2 weeks and deliberately tried to make it look like I did it makes that EXTREMELY difficult. She told her friends and family that I beat and sexually assaulted her, and threatened to kill her. She actually invited her friends to my house to show them the gun she claimed I used to threaten her, which she eventually used to murder my children, kill my dog, and then commit suicide. She also told those people that I beat my children, but absolutely none of that was true; I never raised a hand to her or my kids or abused them in ANY way, EVER. As if that weren't enough, she also left a notebook full of the same type of ridiculous bullshit just in case the cops didn't get around to talking to all those people she lied to. Given all this, I can reach only one conclusion: she murdered my children and killed my beloved dog, committed suicide, and then tried to frame me for the whole thing because she wanted to punish me in the worst way possible for telling he I wanted a divorce. Now, do you think you'd be able to forgive someone who executed your innocent children just to get back at you?

    • @rose_274
      @rose_274 6 лет назад

      Tom Ogden
The most important thing I learned about forgiveness is that you don't forgive a person to benefit them, you forgive to find peace for yourself.
I don't know how long ago this happened, but I'm sure it's going to take some time to find peace. For me, peace came by way of comforting others who have been through something similar. I don't try to fix anyone, that cannot be done. I just help them get through.
      You will figure it out.

The Newtown Massacre was a tragedy that could have been prevented. Mental Health Laws need change. Adam Lanza was a ticking time bomb. His mother from all accounts did very little to get him the help he needed. The mother is further the cause by her not securing firearms from a known mental defect of a son.
The Newtown school security was a joke...… Was only a matter of time till a situation like this massacre would happen. You would think after Columbine , Virginia Tech and Hofstra in New York..... Schools across America would step up campus security. But Newtown did nothing ZERO. And that is why the gunman gained access to the school.
Mental Health not guns is the cause. Fix mental health to prevent this from happening again.

It's Dec 14, 2018. I've been listening to the stories and thinking of those beautiful children and heart stricken parents. Now I have a 4 yr old granddaughter and the pictures of this little Ana Grace (my own daughter's name) brings me the tenderness and joy of the outrageously sweet little child I find in my granddaughter ( whose favorite color too, is purple). I find this mother remarkable in her strength as an individual and courageous and intelligent. This video is a gift. Thank you for sharing, Mrs. Marquez-Greene.

Does anyone else see the ironic humour in the fact that the people who believe the crisis actor narrative base their position on their own judgements that the parents aren't acting sad enough by their standards?
A second irony in this is that idea of what a grieving parent should look like is probably far more influenced by the media they have consumed (i.e. TV and film) rather than from first hand experience.

I am watching this in May 29th, 2022, and it feels like My heart is 🩸 inside while watching this. I am thinking about Ana, as well as all the other kids snatched from us that day, and I am thinking about the children Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas who were snatched from us last Tuesday. It doesn’t get any more heartbreaking than this. Think about how the history books are gonna look back at this in due time, kind words will NOT at all be said about this, No way. This kind of bloodthirsty and violent environment kids are exposed to in this country, is an immoral outrage.
What also really broke my heart, is when Nelba said 1) to never redeem murder as result of gun violence, it’s one thing for a 99 year old to die peacefully in his or her sleep, it’s another for someone to die because of a gun bullet. That should NEVER happen, that’s a crime against humanity 2) she said at the very last part, where there is tragedy and there is triumph, the triumph will be when I “we reunite in the heavens when we get to see Ana again”.

It’s a tragedy all around, truly devastating. But just because there’s some crazies doesn’t mean we make the jump to gun control. It’s in-beaded in the constitution, we have the right to bare arms. If you strip people of their guns it would only leave us more vulnerable to any kind of threat, foreign or domestic. If someone’s nuts , they will find a way to either obtain a gun, or make a bomb etc etc. More of the focus should be on mental health. STOP BLAMING GUNS! You can have the strictest gun laws and if someone is fucked up in fucked up in the head they will find a way to carry out their agenda. The percentage of people who actually commit these acts is substantially small, very very small.

Idk how I feel about this but I do know that no matter how much time has passed I still to this day cannot talk about the child that I lost without uncontrollably sobbing... I just don’t know how anyone could keep their composure so well. Maybe she’s a stronger person than I but even as I typed this ‘tid-bit about my little one I still got that knot in my throat; you know... that lump that won’t go away until at least one tear wells up enough to be wiped away? That’s what I didn’t feel from this but then again who am I to judge when opinions are like assholes?? 🧐🤷🏽‍♀️

50,000 Americans died by Gun violence in Vietnam. I'm am happy that as a young person I was around guns because when I went to war at the behest of the country I was not in foreign territory. As a result my experience there was one in which my mom didn't have to suffer the experience of losing a son to gun violence. The cure for this is not elimination of guns but the elimination of violence in whole. As a police officer my weapon protected many but I know that an armed populace had more a chance of survival when I could not be there.

If I had lost my child in a shooting with more questions than answers, I would be the FIRST person to be demanding answers to why my child was murdered and who was behind it. Seeking the truth is NOT a lack of compassion, it is an ACT OF COMPASSION.
If you think this event is cut and dry, just a disturbed kid who snapped and shot up a school, I challenge you to look deeper. I’ve been studying every detail I can find about this shooting for years (and more recently a few others...Vegas, Parkland, Borderline...) and I’ve come up with more holes in the official narrative and more questions that I started with.
Since when is desiring truth a bad thing or an insult to those who lost loved ones in these events? There is something very wrong and very “off” about so many parts to this narrative that it is beyond concerning. If, God forbid, anything like this ever happened to one of my loved ones, I would want to know the WHOLE truth and would be thankful to those who never give up seeking it. I don’t know what I believe happened exactly, but I do know that what we are told happened absolutely does not match up to the audio, visual, forensic evidence and the events prior to and following are beyond sketchy. There is something very wrong here and it should rightly strike fear in the hearts of every American.

I live a 15 minute drive from Newtown. What she stated is the truth. She and her family are people of color. If they were not living in Newtown, they would not have been given the extra attention by the media. Newtown is a nice quaint plush town where there are not many people of other races living there. The cost of living there is very high as it is in Fairfield county right next to the New York State line. If her family was in the inner city where the costs are lowered (still high) not much attention would have been on them. But, because it was 6 and 7 year olds & almost all white population, main stream media was at the forefront. Sad that society is like that as a life is a life no matter what the skin tone is.

Amen!! On what you said about the people saying "Well at least....theyre in a better place.." You are SOOO right!
I would even take it so far as to say that it is offensive. To say "at least" she is in a "better" place? BETTER? I mean I get people that say in typically aren't saying with malice, obviously, and perhaps without much thought at all; just saying a cliche they've heard. As I listened further I realize that this woman believes in heaven, but saying those "comfort phrases" particularly to people who don't believe in that stuff is definitely offensive.
Again, I realize the ppl saying that are saying it because I mean, what really can you say to a mother or father who has lost their child?
But instead of saying things without thought, like so many of us do, think. And don't say to a mother/father who has lost their child (or anyone that has lost a loved one) "At least they're in a better place."

Adam Lanza took the lives of the children using a gun. Yes, guns need to be controlled but I think it's weird/distracting not to blame the actual culprit first and foremost before we then look at the tool secondly. As we have seen recently; when guns aren't available these sick individuals will use vehicles or home made explosives using over the counter substances. Mental health is a bigger threat and should be the focus rather than any tool used in these killings.
