  • I am showing (in English) how to easy and cheap prevent water in your battery compartment.
It takes about 5 minutes, everyone can do this and it costs only cents / pennies.
This was done on a SLK R171, but it probably works for the R170 too.
    Tools needed (see video):
the empty plastic bottle (something from the 0.7l - to 1.2l sizes)
a measuring tape or ruler to measure 21cm
a knife or scissors to cut the plastic bottle
a (wood) file for the screw thread on the bottle top
grease or oil to slip the bottle into the nozzle
optional: a wrench with 11 to turn the battery mass cable, if its in the way
gloves... allways wear gloves when working on the car, saves you a lot of cuts!
This is what you do (see video):
Cut of the bottom of a normal sized plastic bottle, so 21cm remain from top to end
remove the cap of the bottle and file away the screw thread - any wood file will do
take out the drainage nozzle from your battery compartment and grease it
put the bottle in the nozzle
optional: turn the mass cable from the car body to the battery with a 11 nut wrench, so its not in the way (dont forget to wear gloves and tighten the screw after turning it)
put the nozzle back into its place, re-attach the battery overflow pipe
put the bottle in the nozzle
but the battery compartment cover back
go out for a nice drive :-)
    Drive safe!

The Idea is very good but I am thinking of the temperature under the hood can get pretty hot. Can that plastic take that kind of temperature?

Hi Florian thanks for the video; I'm really bad and the rubber plug felt into the hole making impossible to catch it (it looks is underneath the engine compartment); can you find the name or code of the replacement part? thanks cheers

      Hi,
I cannot find the number, but next time you are at Mercedes, just ask the parts dealer in there, they should find out in seconds.

Very Good thanks... Another Problem, after a Batterie Change, my Command Navigation system ( car and system from 2004 ) dont know where it is, it shows completely wrong streets on the display, do you have any idea to fix that?

@@HHnightmen Ok, Feedback from the experts is: there is no relation between the GPS signal from the command and the battery. Even if you unplug the battery for a longer time (which you shouldn't other then to change the battery), the GPS would sync when used again.
But it was mentioned that it is not unheard of that the command control box in the trunk area is affected by a battery change.
Proposed solution was to unplug all cables from that box for 5 mins (ignition off) and reconnect them after that (ignition still off).
If that doesnt help you will need to see a garage with someone having experience in the Commands (after all quite old now).
      Hope it works soon!

Haha, I doubt they would make the water bottle as cheap :-D
Probably hundreds of $ for the bottle, the implementation and a car wash ^^

The mercedes design seems really poor, traps water, below the air feed to the fan, also the risk of water damage to the fan and shorting the battery.
