I do feel like times are changing (not quickly) but I myself am going into the education field and I have many friends in teaching jobs with tattoos, where their school doesn't mind them being visible (the only discrimination being if it's something "obscene" as in sexually or violently obscene) so that gives me hope for getting my elephant tattoo to make my friends' that they all got one as a group and I couldn't because 1. fear of my parents' disapproval/disownment 2. my fear of needles (which has SUBSTANTIALLY dropped after watching 5 friends get tattooed in a row and watching tattooing videos) 3. worry about placement and getting a job with a tattoo...

I had an Art teacher who had her whole back and half sleeve tattooed and she wore sweters during class even in summer, I knew that she had tattoos bc a classmate saw her without the sweter when she was leaving school. But we kept the secret. Also my science and English teachers had tattoos in the back and stomach.

Tania Castro dang even your art teacher had to cover up?? That's brutal. Our art teacher was pretty heavily tattooed on her arms and showed them but then again she was like a real life Zooey deschannel/panic pixie dream girl so like who was really gonna fire her? I know one reason some jobs don't allow tattoos is because they can distract patients. For example if you're a psychiatrist you deal with mental people and if they see your tattoos it could affect them in a certain way which isn't always a good thing.

It's not about the tattoo. It's much deeper than that. Denis Rodman played decent basketball yet he is not employed and hasn't been for years. He got to play on a great team but he wasn't a "team member" for many reasons in addition to his attire but his tattoos were first to make him odd. The Tattoo fab is a limited group of folks, most of the public don't have them thus, minority in the pack. When you plan to get tattooed, you have to consider the risks of employment so, they would likely be best hidden vs. in the face of your employer. Food service is one area tats aren't welcome according to employers.
One version about them here if you might worry about getting a job or keeping one when dealing with the public:

Garth Clark i like what you said about not common amongst the general public. People seem to think that oh everyones getting them and sure that many apply to maybe ONE or TWO tattoos that are hidden but when you start getting your arms done you will notice the lack of people going that far with it. Sure its way more common than years ago and you wont be shunned for it because its much more seen but still look at the people around you and youll realize its still taboo

you do not have a right to a job, if someone doesn't like you and your tattoos that is their choice you must cater towards them not the other way around. Most people don't mind tattoos but if you do it without tact then you end up making yourself look like a freak.

It's also dependant on what country you are in! For instance, I live in New Zealand and because Maori culture is so accepted and that involves visible/facial tattoos (moko) and we have a high population of Pacific Islanders (Samoan, Tongan, Fijian etc) for whom tattoos are also culturally significant, it makes more sense that anyone with tattoos, visible or otherwise, is more accepted. Hell I literally work for the government and soooo many people have full sleeves and neck tattoos. I have noticed that it's generally of a more modern style though; old school lettering/black-and-white-heavily tattooed folk still get discriminated against cos tattoos of that nature are still associated with gangs and prison.

Unless you intend to have a private practice, I would advise against visible tattoos; unfortunately it is highly taboo to have tattoos-especially in the medical field. So, it would limit your opportunities in residencies and jobs.
You and I are in the same boat, we both are aspiring to professions that borderline abhor body art. I intend on studying forensic psychology, which means that in my career I would have to present myself before a court. Although I am an assertive individual, with a tattoo it would be more difficult to attain the respect of the judge, jury, and prosecutor (or attorney if (s)he happens to be my adversary). Therefore, I can't justify a visible tattoo 😑.
On the plus side, nothing is permitting me from marrying a man with full sleeves
      😉

I realised how immensely close-minded we are here in Spain when I visited Stockholm this past summer. Here it is impossible to see a girl with body modifications working at a high end store; not even someone with an "unusual" hair colour. I strongly think that whatever tattoos/piercings I have or don't have does not mean I will perform better or worse at a given job, but that's something most of the companies here don't seem to understand :(

LillyPointedEd Me too! I'm a Physical Therapist Assistant in the nursing home setting and 9 times out of 10, the residents will say "I would rather just see your tattoos than have you bandage them like you're infected with something, or wear clothes that make you burn up while you work..." Also our elderly population is getting less and less WWI generation and more Woodstock/Baby Boomer generation so I think that's going to start making a huge different in the LTC settings. Of course you'll always have people that oppose but I don't think it's as prevalent as it used to be due to the changing of the generations.

Slowly but steadily people are seeing that tattoos are an individual right and must be respected by other people and corporations. The professional competence and skills must not be measured by what's going on people's skin. Well made tattoos are works of art and difficult ones since to draw on a 3D surface is challenging. Google it and we can see masterpieces. Of course, there are horrible tattoos but that's a personal issue. In our competitive world, what matters the most are the results, made by people with or without tattoos. I loved this new space, Kat: cozy, minimalist and professional. Big kiss from Brazil!

    • @voluntarism335
      @voluntarism335 4 года назад +1

"must be respected by other people and corporations" there is no must. You do have the right to do what you will with your own body but that does not mean others should be forced to accept it, no one has to accept someone's tattoos and if they do not want to hire you then that is their choice. There are consquences to getting tattoos that is just the real world. I wouldn't hire someone if their entire face was plastered with tattoos all over them. That shows no tact and an attitude problem.

in my last surgery, the assistant surgeon had tattoos and plugs. This was in Germany. And I also had another surgery done in the US, I noticed the anesthesiologist had a visible quarter sleeve before I got knocked out. And this is one, if not, the highest paid position in the medical field. However, there are also strict suit & tie jobs, where you have to wear a suit or a long sleeve shirt, where you can get away with it anyway. There are bankers with tattoos, according to my dad. But generally, creative industries, design, media, fashion etc. are super open to tattoo and some even consider it part of diverse workforce and are happy with the individuality aspect of it. It really depends.

As long as a person can do the job, I wouldn't care how many tattoos they had. I don't discriminate against anyone. I don't have any myself, but I do enjoy the art of it. :-) People should always treat each other fairly and look at what's inside rather than outside....too bad the whole world cant be that way.

I haven't watched the video yet, but I did a 10 page research paper a few years ago on discrimination of tattoos/piercings (and even touched on hair colors) in the workplace for modern society, and this kind of shit gets me so pissed off. I am a big target for all of these (blue hair, stretched ears, shit in my face, etc.) but I my field of study is in 3d modeling for game engines/simulation so I typically don't worry about it, but I still find myself applying to companies thinking "they're not going to hire me because my hair is blue..they're all wearing suits in this picture, they're not gonna let me have a nose ring and take company pictures with their fancy suits!" The reality is, most employers honestly don't care if you have tattoos, that is if you're working in a low profile/non-customer service type of environment. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, waitresses, corporate businesses, or commission based incomes are typically handed the short end of the stick in these situations. Normally there are plenty of exceptions, even if your tattoos/piercings are visible, but I have never been able to understand how someone making a decision to put art on their body has to be ostracized by a big boss man because "it makes them look uneducated and irresponsible." It's funny because almost everyone I know with tattoos seem to be much deeper, more intelligent, less ignorant minded types of people. Not just because they have tattoos, but because typically to put tattoos on your body (especially if someone has as many as Katrin for example) they have put some amount of thought into it, or they have a passion for something. Clearly that's just my own personal anecdotal opinion, and there are plenty of people who just get dumb ass tattoos when they're young and wish they didn't have them, but that's not really what we're talking about here. This kind of shit just makes me so mad, that other people can literally judge us so hard based on what we want to put on our bodies that they can just choose to not give us a job. Just because I don't like Becky's ugly sweater, but that doesn't mean I can fire her, or ask her to take it off, because of it. I mean she did choose to wear it, and it looks really childish because of it's design, but it's okay because that's just Becky. You can't force someone to change their mind about tattoos though I suppose...they can't change yours either.

Times are definitely changing and tattoos in the work place are becoming more widely accepted. I don't let my potential future jobs determine my tattoos. Other than neck and hands, I would wait on those until I was very certain about my future. I have accepted that some places will not allow me to show them. And that's their prerogative. I am okay wearing long sleeves and long pants every day if it's a job I want.

I'm tattooed, and have a lot of visible ones (full sleeves and my fingers tattoed). I also have piercings in the face. I work at an elder home and have never been discriminated because of them. Sure, not everyone like it but I have never felt like it would make me unemployed. It makes me feel hopeful for the future, that I can look the way I want to look and not have to worry about not being taken seriously. But when I visited Japan and we're going to universal studios there, we had to cover up all tattoos with clothes because of them being scared that their children would get ideas. So I'm happy that I live in a country where I can be myself. (I live in Sweden)

But when I said that I can remove them and tape them up when I'm working and they were very happy with my flexibility.. and added that in 5-6 years it also won't be a problem.:

My personal scenario: Work in retail. Don't know what I want to do for a living. Only get tattoos that I can cover up with half sleeve shirts and shorts that go down to the knee. So far that's been my inner upper arm, inner lip and soon my sternum. I just think this is the best way to go for someone who wants to be tattooed but always be employable in many different work fields.

  • @livebreathestyle

I work as a graphic designer and got a tattoo on my arm this past year. The dress code at work is super casual and the atmosphere is pretty laid back and creative. I often wear short sleeve shirts that show my tattoo at work and have never faced an issue. However, my job does require me to meet with clients and usually, I'll wear a longer shirt to cover it just in case. I do have colored hair (purple) and a nose ring and it's never been an issue.
I have wondered if getting more tattoos that were more visible would hurt my chances of landing a job in the future if I do decide to leave my current workplace... That thought does hold me back a bit.

    • @livebreathestyle
      @livebreathestyle 7 лет назад

Also want to add.. do you think that this will be an issue in the future? I personally feel that the younger generations are much more accepting of tattoos and body modifications even if they wouldn't get anything themselves. Or maybe that is just my experience? I would hope that in the future people don't have to worry as much about employment because of a tattoo.

+Naomi Mary In the future every boss in every business and every customer will have tattoos so I don't think it will be an issue at all ^^ as for your concern I think tattoos mainly are an issue BEFORE you get into the industry. If you are skilled and get good experience and people respect your work, no tattoos will stand in that was... at least in creative businesses. Getting your first job is the tricky one but after that it's easier to let your work speak for itself.

Totally agree. I'm a Graphic Designer myself, i work for a well respected Multinational company. My artist is actually a co-worker of mine, who became a very close friend over the years.
Everyone here is open minded, and as you said, there is a point where ur skill-set decides whether or not you get hired.
We all need to keep in mind, specially into the creative industry that money talks. Your ability to be more productive and creative will overrule almost all body modifications.
Note: There may be certain positions within a company that require you to go into public more often, and that may be a no-zone for a heavily tattooed person.

Every now and again we'd get a person that comes who thinks tattoos are the work of the devil or something. Like this one lady was causing a huge scene about one of my tattoos ( a dagger going through a hand with roses around it to be specific ) and the owner came out and just told her to get over it and leave lmao. I hope you all find a place to work with the same acceptance of your body art like I do here.

My passion in my career is zookeeping and my first zoo had a strict no tattoo policy. By that time I only had a small tattoo on my wrist which I covered with a watch. Then I wanted my next tattoo (an otter) and chose to put it on my leg, because this same zoo didn't allow their keepers to wear shorts so it would always be covered. Same for my Beatles lyrics on my back between my shoulder blades, I would always wear a top so no one knew I had it. Then after 3 years I moved on to a zoo in the UK which had no problems with tattoos at all (people in the UK seem more accepting of tattoos in general) so I started an arm sleeve now :) I wouldn't be able to remove them anymore obviously, but I'm glad I sacrificed little things like covering my tattoos and dying my hair one colour to get 3 years worth of experience in my career of choice.

I'm in IT and tattoos (and piericings) are pretty acceptable there. Of course you have to be slightly careful if there's external clients around but amongst co-workers people already assume you're a bit quirky so tattoos (or piercings) aren't really a thing they mind. In my 20+ years in that business I've never really had anyone who took offense.

However, an employer can and will deny you work if you have lots of tattoos if they disagree with their dress code. Most work in the service industry for instance can deny you if you come in with purple hair one day. Here in Norway at least and employer can order you to dye your hair in a more neutral colour, same goes with bodymods. Obviously you can't take away your tattoo, but you can be ordered to cover them up.

I do have many tattoo plans for the future, and hopefully, plans including visible tattoos. But I haven't finished my studies yet, and even if the field of activity I hope to be working on (museums, basically) is quite open minded, we never know the rules of every institutions and I don't want to risk my future career - cause, as you said, it's important to be yourself but it is, also in my point of view, as important to have a job that you really like. So... for the moment, I get tattoos I can hide, and let's see what will happen in the future. ;)

One of my friends is currently removing an ankle tattoo because she wants to be a flight attendant. I never would have expected that it is so expensive and sooooo painful... One of the removal sessions cost her around 600 euros - and it's a small flower with just the edges (no color or shadows)! And I think she has to get two or three more sessions...
So yeah I would advice getting your tattoos at a visible place when you have figured out your future plans etc. Of course that's not always possible but just something to consider.
For example I have four tattoos - one of them is on my wrist and it shows everyday. I work selling cosmetics and it has never been an issue for my customers or employers. I did have to take my lip piercing of because it is not allowed to have "disturbingly visible" piercings at my work place.

if an employer doesn't hire you because of your tattoos, it doesn't necessarily mean the employer him/herself is against tattoos, it depends on the job, if your job requires working with people then the employer might think someone with tattoos isn't the best candidate since non-tattooed people are more likely to not garner negative attraction from the general public, mostly from the older people.

I have two visible tattoos on my arm, they take a lot of space but they're still "girly" and "dainty". so yeah, I've never had any problem with them, whether it be with my boss or my patients. Most of the time my patients are interested in them, want to know what they mean, tell me their opinion or simply try to rub them off (this happens a lot actually). From what I've seen, everyone is pretty open minded and doesn't care as long as I do my job well. :)

But since i also work in psychiatric hospitals a lot, i would not get visible tattoos right now. i got the first one on my thigh, which i can easily cover up. now i am getting half sleeves, i can always cover up with a 3/4 long shirt (for summer). right now i am in a clinic whre people slowly got used to my appearance and i got to stretch the boundaries a little for doing a good job over the last 3 years but i don´t know if that will always be the case. right now i decide to which patients i can show my tattoos and when i need to flip my septum in ;) no will to fight any battles here, makes work too complicated.

I work in a 4 star hotel and have visible arm tattoos and facial piercings. Luckily I don't have much interactions with the guests but no one has said anything. No one else I work with has visible tattoos or piercings, so I'm not sure what the rule is on it. My boss has seen me multiple times and has never brought it up. I can easily hide them anyway, so it's no big deal if he says something.

I used to work for the Government and only got tattoos which are always hidden. Now I'm working as a hair stylist and finally got my first visible tattoo past weekend because in this industry it's really common to be tattooed and it's waaay more accepted. love it.

I feel like you could get whatever you wanted on your arms in any field because you can just wear long sleeves (provided that it's not something where you'd be working with anything dirty that might get on your clothes), but it would be pretty hot lol

I currently work at a copy center. I was not informed of this at the time I was hired but apparently they have a rule about covering visible tattoos. In fact I asked the manager if they were okay with me showing them when I was hired and they said it wasnt an issue but I found out recently that apparently if you are hired with them it isn't much of an issue, however if you have worked there for a while an you have no tattoos/appear to have no tattoos and then get one that is visible they would be told they shouldnt have done that and to cover it up. Which makes no sense to me. If you are willing to hire someone who has visible tattoo and they dont have an issue with it, but then some one who has worked there for 5 years and they get a visible tattoo and they get in trouble.... I just dont get it

I live in Australia where tattoos are incredibly common and being heavily tattooed is becoming increasingly more common. However, there is still a lot of discrimination in the professional field - so I get my tattoos in hidden areas for the time being. As sad as it is, in most industries you are expected to not have any visible tattoos, and if you have any you are reduced to the retail, hospitality and labouring/manufacturing industries from what I noticed around me.
Sadly, unlike race, religion or ethnicity, most countries do not consider it illegal to discriminate against hair colour, tattoos or piercings in workplaces/job interviews. I've been asked to change my hair colour *after* I was hired, and I have been asked to remove my non-visible piercings before. I definitely understand that some tattoos are not appropriate in certain workplaces, but I still think that it's discriminatory to pass on someone qualified based on their appearance.

im so torn. ive always wanted a forearm tattoo, but my job has a "client ready" policy which basically means tattoos need to be covered.
personally, i dont care for long sleeves. whenever i wear them, i push the sleeves up so its 3/4 length...and most of my shirts have no sleeves at all or theyre short sleeves and i wear sweaters over it. i feel like if i get the tattoo its going to be more of an inconvience than anything else, but at the same time its something i realllly want. i know i wont be at this job forever..but this problem could arise in future jobs as well.
i seriously dont know what to do. someone please help!

I work as cabin crew/flight attendant which is a business where companies doesn't allow viable tattoos. (There are pretty strikt rules of how to look for both men and women). Then again us girls can get away with wearing boots or pants instead of skirts to hide any leg tattoos (I have a purser who's got tattoes over her entire leg but you can't tell since she always wears pants) and well placed watches and plasters goes a long way too... In the end the ppl who works as crew don't care if you're tattooed or not, they're some the most open minded ppl when it comes to most thing, so as long as you follow the rules you'll be respected regardless of how you look like in civilian clothing. However if it's your dream to work in the skies, be careful of where you put your ink because the ppl hiring will be a bit backwards about it.
