On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Fight in and against Russian, American, German, British warbirds such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, Hurricane and rugged IL-2 Sturmovik attack plane. You can also fly legendary SPADS, Fokkers and Camels in WWI dogfights over the trenches of WWI and discover your inner Red Baron! And all of this can be experienced in jaw dropping virtual reality!

Lots of people have been asking if the New Viper changes are just for fun or if the Viper changes move the module towards realism, the fact is that this New Viper we have since the recent update to the Sim now represents a much more realistic model of the Vipers capabilities and I think this video shows why the Viper is super dangerous you can see whenever he goes into the 2 circle, he can't be touched. General question ? Everyone's internet speed. What mgbs do you need to run DCS properly? With and without pimax 8kx ?
I don’t know shit but I like watching these and hearing your play by play….however I notice that when you’re attacking in a 2 circle trying to close down against a better rate fighting aircraft, you don’t ever seem to employ any displacement rolls with the Tomcat? I imagine the rudder control on the F-14 could easily pivot the tail around and cut the circle in half pretty quickly without losing too much energy? Maybe I just don’t understand the limitations of the F-14.

@@bluecaptainIT there was a proposed Charlie variant, with better multi-role capabilities, but I don’t think it ever made it past the design phase. The D variant was apparently more interesting to the USN

He is flying to his planes strength and forcing the other plane to fly to its weakness, don't fly a two circle fight against the F-16... in the F-14 you want to force people into 2 circle fights with a few planes that will beat it.
@@doc7000 absolutely. He makes it look so damn easy and that’s the skill part. To be able to anticipate and counter/lead your opponent into disadvantageous situations is a skill unto itself. He makes the dogfight a chess match and you know the other guy knows what he’s trying to do he just cannot beat him to certain spots it’s crazy to see

The thing that make Bandit Unknown interesting is that he has to figure out at the merge what he's fighting and how he'll go about fighting it.
With the F-16 it doesn't matter what he's fighting, the answer is always to just keep it 2-circle, simple as.
So I don't think it'd be particularly interesting, as much as I love the Viper.
@@wurfyy great point! However, you still have planes like the f22 and su35 who can still sometimes out-rate the viper. Then you have aircraft like the f18, flankers, and other aircraft to force the viper into a 1 circle. I think you bring up a valid point, however I think it can still be interesting and fun.
Heh Sidewinder , my nephew was a Navy pilot and at the end of his enlistment he was an instructor , taking the pilots in training through their last rotation , landing on Carriers . Pretty brutal expectations , the trainee has 3 attempts at night , and 2 attempts in the daytime . If they fail to land successfully in those attempts , they are out of jets and go to either helicopters or props . I don't know how it is nowadays { he left service in early 2000s } , but he flys for Southwest Airlines now . I visit him often and there are usually a few of his fellow ex-Navy pilots there with him . Listening to them talk all the flight language sounds exactly how you talk when in DCS . You should of been a freakin pilot dude , I am really enjoying your channel. I find myself power watching episodes for hours.. Great stuff Sidewinder !!! 👍👊
Great job on this one! I appreciate your flying and choosing to take him vertical. It's actually textbook procedure at Top Gun to take a light, maneuverable fighter into the vertical with an F14 where the engine power really makes up.
Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but doesn't the F-16 have better thrust-weight ratio which seemingly advantages the viper in the vertical?
@@GenericLandscapePhotographer it's not necessarily the performance of the opponent but to optimise your response with the Tomcat. I hope that makes sense, like your best chance against high performance fighters is a vertical response.

@@GenericLandscapePhotographer well first off I'll say that it's a real tactic. The other (speculation) is that the Tomcat is better at low speed and a viper cannot maintain 400 knots+ fighting vertically. Tomcat is high thrust/high lift where the viper is more high thrust/medium lift. It always comes down to making the enemy play your game.

I think what this video shows most is that two capable pilots in two capable aircaft are always gonna be closely matched and victory is going to go to the one who doesnt make mistakes

Damn, its actually insane how much low speed nose authority the tomcat has WITHOUT leading edge extensions, fbw, etc. Props to your insane rudder work man. As both a viper and tomcat fan, this was amazing to watch :D
I feel like a lot of people under rate the F-14 as an air superiority fighter (which is what it was designed for), I think it is because its aim-54 missiles got so much press that it has given the F-14 a lop sided image.
I wonder what performance you would get from a Tomcat built with today’s technology, much lighter airframe using composite and FBW, much more powerful engine, better aerodynamics.

@@doc7000 yes, shame that we don’t at least have a flying prototype of it.
@@xsu-is7vq part of the short comings of the tomcat came from cost cuttings as there were concern over the cost of the plane that also hurt it. The f14 was replacing the f4 phantom as fleet defender and air superiority fighter and the f14 was much more expensive.
The F-110 powered Tomcat was definitely a good wvr performer
The F-14D with its digital FCS was even better.

There's nothing like "knowing thy enemy", or at least the strengths and weaknesses of his aircraft and your own. That's part of what Operation Red Flag is all about, I suppose, the chance to fly against the aircraft you might really need to face someday, and learn how to play the game to your advantage.
I really like your fights with tackview at the end and your break down of the engagement. Maybe you could mention tackview in the titles or something. Great stuff man

@@qiyuxuan9437 flight caracteristics and performance of the AIM-54 (Nerf in short) but i guess its more realistic that way
@@heavyspootis4455 Oh no, even more nerfs.....But it also mentioned that they fixed muti player desync issues for AIM-154, that should make it a bit more reliable. I'm fine with a slight nerf on flight performance, but they need to improve the guidance on the C variant, which currently is pretty much no difference from A variant.
@@qiyuxuan9437 More reliable yes but forget about those sweet 20 mile deck splashes that you could easily do some time ago with the MK60. Its been such long time waiting for the C version to actually get a realistic model that i nearly forgot about it 😩

One of the better fights felt more even
I never thought I would like to watch someone playing a game like this. You are an amazing teacher. Back in early 2000’s i played a game a lot. I once had been heavily damaged, so the flight controls had locked up. I was in a slow descending right turn. The enemy instead of finishing me off, flew right in front of me! I gave him the 1 Aim 9 I had left and lmao for several minutes.
I am busting a gut laughing. Jester said, "I'm getting the F out of here! .... I wanna live!" LOL. Well done. Bravo.

Just starting to learn to fly (Sim) and I can't wait to progress to fighter planes. It feels like playing chess. My father was in the Navy in WW11 and he taught me how to play chess. I think this kind of flying will always remind me of him. Great video.

Holy shit GS dude that was an amazing tacview review, easily my favorite thus far. You not only explained the theory flawlessly but also gave us practical tidbits (i.e. seeing the top of his aircraft as if passing each other on a highway, introducing a bit of vertical to shift the circle over, etc). Can't thank you enough. I never thought I'd think this but as soon as I'm done building my computer I'm for sure downloading DCS (and using your 10%-off coupon code if it's still valid at that time ^^).
I do have one question/request though: how exactly does the offset two-circle fight mechanics work in a vertical rate fight? For example, say I want to shift my circle over... but I'm already going vertical, soo what do I move more parallel to the horizon and back? Also how do I account for fluctuating factors such as the vector of gravitational force and amount of air resistance? Maybe one day you can do a tacview explaining it so we aren't as intimidated by vertical rate fights :P

This proves that no matter how lethal your plane is, but if it is flown by an unworthy pilot, the plane becomes a worthless thing.
You can see how effective GS in flying the Viper. He knows the strength of the Viper and that is where he is taking it there. He never took bait in the one circle offers by the bandits. He always find ways to get out of the one circle fight no matter how long it takes. Great skills GS!

When your Jester ejects, that's when you pull out your sidearm and shoot the enemy pilot, like in the WW1 planes in IL-2.
Don't forget: Over 100 miles shoot 1 Phoenix bam done! You couldn't even carry a big missile like a Phoenix on F-16 but can't wait to see the upgrades. sm

Standard operating procedure for engagement is to first jettison your external tanks, followed quickly by jettisoning Jester! 👍
F-14 front pilot: "Hey, bud, would you mind ejecting so that the F-14 can shave off some weight please?"
F-14 second pilot: "Why?"
F-14 front pilot: "I am going to show this viper the tom cruise style of top gun."
F-14 second pilot: "Ok, this aircraft is all yours. Show him how it is done."
Moments after the ejection...
GS: "Excuse me, wtf is this Hollywood bs?"
And then proceeded to kill the viper in an awesome fashion.
If the Tomcat's front cockpit includes a button to eject the guy in back, could be a useful tactic in those tight spots. Be seeing you!

Jester should be courts martialed for desertion in the face of the enemy. He also caused you to get very cold in a cockpit with no canopy in the winter at 5000ft and 350kns. If he evades the disciplinary elements, I'd lock him naked in a deep freezer with a fan running at max-chat for about 6 hours as punishment.
