On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.

The Meteor has a two-way datalink with its launch platform, which _does_ mean that if you break the lock and the missile can't find you but the mothership does (whether with its own radar or from AWACS), it will immediately snitch and tell the missile where it can find you again. The Meteor is a tenacious and nasty piece of hardware.

it's funny when you consider US was pushing hard for widespread AIM-120 NATO adoption, you can imagine all the Meteor countries must have been like "not today, stars and stripes!!!"
@@123Andersonev I mean, the AMRAAM is a good missile, but even disregarding the 30-year-old design (updated though it might be), it's still a medium range missile that is intended to only ever be thrown from within 50 miles. The Meteor is a long range missile that's expected to be thrown more than 100 miles.
The real question is whether or not the AMRAAM is going to meet modern day BVR requirements. The AIM-120D, in theory, has comparable performance to the Meteor, but performance on paper is very different from performance in the air. I'm sure it's plenty capable, but it's probably also at the very limits of what the missile is capable of.
@@PhycoKrusk the 120D doesn't though it's not big enough to have comparable range and doesn't have the same no escape zone, the issue is US superiority aircraft like the Raptor can't house the meteor in their weapons bay, the f35 can because it was a design requirement if that makes sense.
That one needed a tacview debrief to see how the Meteor behaved.
I feel like he misses a lot of opportunities to see how missiles behave, i get that he has done It a thousand times with standard dcs missiles but these are not and would be really interesting

It’s more the missile than the typhoon. The meteor is currently the best air to air missile for BVR.

if i had to guess, id say you drop the tanks when they start being a risk. you can defend at 100 miles with tanks quite easily, its when you start getting closer to the mar that you should drop.

There is a channel on RUclips called Aircrew Interviews. They interviewed a former British Royal Air Force pilot who helped set up the RAF's first Eurofighter squadron. He was saying that the Eurofighter was such a gamechanger that pilots with just 160 hours flying were taking on F-15 pilots with hundreds of hours flying and the Eurofighter could get a kill in 60 seconds.

Never felt more ambivalent on a GS fight. Obvs want GS to win, F16 my favourite aircraft and it's so dominant... but as a Brit and European, lovely to see the Typhoon bullying the F16 with that mighty Meteor missile. Holy crap that thing changes the engagement, chasing off AWACS! Amazing and nail biting fight. Love it.
Ramjets are scary on missiles. As an American, I honestly hope the US buys the Meteor sometime soon, or at least takes some cues for new AA missiles.

That was a nailbiter. I was looking up the EF2000 and the Meteor. Service ceiling 65k ft, 110 nmi range, max 13 mounting hardpoints (I have no idea how many Meteors it can carry).

lol russia can't invade NATO, not with those specs. and that's only what they tell us. the F35 must be some sort of beast if at least some of our allies are picking up, like a eurofighter but with stealth. who knows what these jets are really capable of
@@berengerchristy6256 F-35 has superior avionics, radar, stealth, and is also cheaper. Europe really screwed the pooch with the Eurofighter tbh. It's what the press kept claiming the F-35 was, an overpriced failure.

The meteor is basically a cheat code. Very OP.
Which makes sense, considering that UK missile tech is so good, and the position of the UK in geopolitical/strategic terms.
Ask the guys flying those F-15's every week over the UK, blading around at mack 1.2.
The Eurofighters just float about slowly at decent altitude, observing, not taking much care for anything else.
They're fully aware of how well defended the UK is with these meteors, they don't really even need anything more.
There capable planes, but they don't need to be much more than just "capable" with great avionics, great missiles, and total coverage. Basically it's impossible to cross the North Sea without being downed. Which is the whole point. That's their whole defence.
Total coverage, and missiles that are impossible to defend without basically fleeing, which is why the UK don't mind using F-35's for that purpose.
They don't need anything as capable is an F16 or an F22, they could stick with the eurofighter for a few more decades just fine.

I know DCS will never get the missile to the young age of the missile and it being highly classified, but I wonder how much different this fight would be if the delta variant of the AMRAAM was introduced for the F-16.

@@kaiezesi6630 the Eurofighter does have a Electro optical system so it would be hard for the F-22 to home in on it with its radar off, so yah that would be a pretty good fight
Just curious. With a F16 or comparable fighter, can you shoot an Amraam blind, using the AWACS data link as initial source of target info? An then hoping for a lock from your missile once is enough close to doing a "pitbull"?
In theory, sure, but that severely limits the missile's capability. The Brits originally purchased the AMRAAM without the optional feature for mid-flight course correction, and learned very quickly that this actually made the missile significantly less effective at BVR than a Sparrow (which costs 1/10th what a modern AMRAAM does).
