I notice that many that fly the Eagle give up it's main advantage - high altitude maneuverability. It's the only 4th gen fighter than can pull sustained 6g turns at 30,000ft. Yet so many take it to the deck immediately.
Agree. Heard an F-14 pilot say they could hardly ever beat the F-15 in a merge if the fight stayed above 35,000. High altitude vertical fight was its biggest strength.
That's the thing tho, when you don't follow a guy down when he goes down, you will eventually have bfm problems since they will rate faster and pull more than 6g with the extra speed they gained from diving.
If I remember correctly, occasionally you switch aircraft with your opponent. It would help to see how much is pilot skill vs. aircraft. Pilot skill will still come into play as one or both pilots may be better in one of the two aircraft, but it would help demonstrate which aircraft is better in the particular type of fight. Just a thought. Still hoping for the F-22 vs. MiG-31, too.
in other vids comments gs told that due to the others lack of skill in the other aircraft or them not even having it its often not possible. but yeah I also like those vids where its possible

Simple math. The F-15 has the highest thrust to weight ratio of all American Jets. Him getting low and slow with a F-14 is not playing to the Eagle’s strength at all. Next is the F-22 followed closely by the F-16. Side note, cool thing about the F-16 is it achieves a high thrust to weight ratio with only one engine.

That was a run at some time to height records in the 70s, they stripped everything out of the jet, including the paint. They even gave the pilot a prune and celery-only diet for a week before the flight program, to make sure he was a few pounds down..* *I'm kidding. But they should have..

I love both the F14 and F15, i think they are both amazing Jets and both hold their own advantages even on the same page as both are fairly even, but seems a lot of people miss out on both planes attributes sometimes, but when its GS flying,you know its gunna be a good dogfight. Yeah same here I told myself when I started DCS that I’m gonna be an Eagle guy… until I got the Tomcat and immediately fell head over heels with it. But then again I got the Hornet then the Viper then the Mirage and now I get kinda confused of which one to fly/fight
The F-14 Tomcat has always been a personal favorite! If you let off the afterburner and use your air brake the plane will be much more responsive while making a full turn. Beautiful gunner skills! That’s real dogfighting!!! Can’t wait to see more!👍
I have loved the Tomcat for years. (was a Top Gun kid in the 80s) I'm glad to see that it's able to not only be a great interceptor but hold its own in a dogfight even against our own incredible F15.

Gotta love the damage model of DCS though, the way damage impacts not only performance of the aircraft, but also it’s limitations? The way the eagle broke apart when Gs were pulled. That’s awesome.
I came across an older F-14 DF video with a pilot who focuses on the F-14. He tends to use vertical in the merge to get the wings to move forward which apparently makes a big difference with the turn. It makes sense in that you can use some gods G to help and take advantage of those wings.
You constantly prove the difference in a fight is the pilot..., knowing what his aircraft is capable of AND what the other aircraft is capable of. The old adage "Never fight the other man's fight".
Just saw a great comment below...have the MIG31 and the Su57 go BVR against one another. They can both fire the R37, I believe. It would be interesting to see if that big radar of the MIG could see the 57 at a distance, since the Su57 is really only semi stealth (and marginal at that).
2:1 ratio. Coincidentally, that is what the ratio was of F-14A vs F-15A back in 1981 when the AIMEVAL/ACEVAL happened where F-14A had a 2:1 advantage over the F-15A (of course, training was a part of it. USN had better training at the time).
The Eagle has better lift at all altitudes, but suffers from more drag at AoA compared to the Tomcat. At high altitudes this means it has better maneuvering and control, at low altitudes it means it has a lower sustained rate, but higher ITR.
Consider the F15C Strike Eagle were among the hardest target from Tomcat As though the F15 may not be included as instructors plane to trained with F14 on the Miramar's Topgun School as yet the F16N were be founded among the instructor's sortie in Top Gun Flight Tactical Schools
theres an eagle driver video on youtube where he talks about dogfighting the f14 turkey and reckons they were really easy to take down because you knew by the state of the wings what the pilot was going to do in terms of bugging out or turning with you
Beautiful. I'm happy to see the Tomcat getting the attention it deserves. Retiring that plane for Boeing's greasy handshakes for the inferior Hornet is still one of the greatest mistakes the Navy has ever made.
Is it though? How many Tomcats would be hopelessly undergoing repairs to the swept wings while the F18 despite being slightly inferior is just happy and content doing whatever you ask of it?
@@eyedunno8462 it is. The hornet airframe and the Tomcat were rated about the same at 8000 hour airframe lifespan. The maintenance on the A model was rough, but post B and D Model Super-Tomcats the service was much less, especially with the newer P&W engines. The Tomcat could fly further, faster, higher, and deliver more ordinance than the hornet. I can provide a source or two if you like as well. But yea, I stand by what I said wholeheartedly. That’s also not to mention that glorious AIM-54 only the tomcat could carry.
Eagle vs Tomcat? Hmmm, tough one. I know that in these situations you usually forgo missles use guns. It would all depend on the pilot, but in this case...I'd have to give all advantages to the Eagle. It has more power and can turn tighter (at least at high altitude). The Tomcat would have to do what is usually done...sucker it down into a low turning fight and bleed its energy. Fight 1, it sounded like and did my exact strategy...fight 2, I wish you had a 22 also, but at least Goose lived 😀. And yes, I remember the Eagle landing with one wing, that was some pilot! I didn't know how they kept it from spinning...I probably would have punched out.

Hi, I have some advice for as an old sim pilot who used to fly microprose falcon 4. When I use to play falcon 4 allied forces about 15 years ago, in that 700 page of pdf tutorial there was advice about landing. It said that if you are not in proper landing status, don't worry, turn around and try again for approach, spending some extra gallon of fuel is better than risking multi millionaire aircraft and your life. According to that fact, if F-14 is 35 million aircraft, may be at the worst condition it's flaps cost 1 million(which is not in fact). that is 1 to the 35 of price. In this situation sacrificing 1 million (flaps jamming) is more wise than sacrificing 35 million with the risk 2 pilot life that their life has no price to talk about. If I was you , without any doubt I would sacrifice my flaps to rescue both my AC and RIO. That will be for sure.
How do you turn to look behind you with trackir and still see your screen? Do you have owl eyes or sum? Or am I missing something because my eyes can’t turn that far

I was in Pt.Mugu with VX-4, Naval Weapons Test Squadron, VF-24 Fighting Renegades, VF-211 Fighting Checkmates and VX-5 Vampires out of China lake Naval Ait station. Don't forget Miramar NAS. Great videos guys. I would often ask my pilots and Rios in the above mentioned Squadrons what they would do against Chinese and Russian aircraft lig Mig 29 Fulcrums and Su-27 Flankers. Awesome combat! I love the F14. Started with the Warthog but can't get enough of the Tomcat. Been 4 months now and probably only have about 30% understanding of all the stuff that goes into this awesome flying machine. Only wish I could get playback to work; pretty sure it would help combat immensely. Anyway, thanks Sidewinder. Always looking forward to your vids, especially with the Tomcat.
I'm not sure if it is just due to the advanced flight model but with the F-14, you can always see when she's not handling well in dogfights, starting to shake and doing those characteristic rattling noises. I guess, you would have had plenty of compressor stalls with the A model in the second round, anyway - but as you say, unlike other planes with modern flight control systems, its totally up to you if you make the turn or go into a flat spin with the Tomcat.
I know the question wasn’t posed to me, but if there was one thing I’d say, it’s use your feet-a lot! The more you pull on the stick (the higher the angle of attack), the less you’re going to use lateral stick to roll, and the more you’re going to use the rudder. It’s odd at first, but you’ll get used to it.
I wonder what this looks like if you're a ground observer just camping out. Just seeing two high-tech metal birds tearing at each other in the air, with ribbons of gun rounds spraying about.

it was back in the mid-late 90's there was a few eagles that broke their spine in training, ejecting the cockpit of the plane...when you shot across the spine, I expected that main spar to break and the cockpit to fall off.
In Ace Combat 7 I was in a F-14A Tomcat the TGM variant when a teammate was in a F-15C? F-15J? And the enemy team got no points mostly me with buffed HPAA and (Somehow) maxed out Mobility.

There is unfortunately no f14d in the sim, only A/B but there rumours that there might be one In the works.
@Growling Sidewinder As a retired F-14 A/B/D Aviation Electrician I thought the F-14 B you used in this simulation did well. I was in Pt.Mugu with VX-4, Naval Weapons Test Squadron, VF-24 Fighting Renegades, VF-211 Fighting Checkmates and VX-5 Vampires out of China lake Naval Ait station. Don't forget Miramar NAS. Great videos guys. I would often ask my pilots and Rios in the above mentioned Squadrons what they would do against Chinese and Russian aircraft lig Mig 29 Fulcrums and Su-27 Flankers. Awesome combat! I love the F14. Started with the Warthog but can't get enough of the Tomcat. Been 4 months now and probably only have about 30% understanding of all the stuff that goes into this awesome flying machine. Only wish I could get playback to work; pretty sure it would help combat immensely.

I'm not sure if it is just due to the advanced flight model but with the F-14, you can always see when she's not handling well in dogfights, starting to shake and doing those characteristic rattling noises. I guess, you would have had plenty of compressor stalls with the A model in the second round, anyway - but as you say, unlike other planes with modern flight control systems, its totally up to you if you make the turn or go into a flat spin with the Tomcat.
Would love to see more duels against real pilots!

I love your videos man they really inspired me to learn dcs! I was wondering if you had any recommendations for those beginning to learn the tomcat?
I know the question wasn’t posed to me, but if there was one thing I’d say, it’s use your feet-a lot! The more you pull on the stick (the higher the angle of attack), the less you’re going to use lateral stick to roll, and the more you’re going to use the rudder. It’s odd at first, but you’ll get used to it.
The 14 is such a beautiful plane...
That guy flying the eagle would’ve had lost flying an f22 vs a zeppelin.

it was back in the mid-late 90's there was a few eagles that broke their spine in training, ejecting the cockpit of the plane...when you shot across the spine, I expected that main spar to break and the cockpit to fall off.

In Ace Combat 7 I was in a F-14A Tomcat the TGM variant when a teammate was in a F-15C? F-15J? And the enemy team got no points mostly me with buffed HPAA and (Somehow) maxed out Mobility.
