My wife and I saw John Prine twice in Fairbanks, AK. We live here but I'm from Nebraska (born in Lincoln). We also lived in Bowling Green, KY (my wife is from there). He talked to my wife about his relatives there after the concert here. We love Prine and his music. My wife and I were sad when he passed.
This song is so addictive, my wife wonders what exactly what I'm listening to half the time. She has no idea that many times I'm on the other side of town!

I was lucky enough to find him in the early '70s but very sadly lost him two days ago. America lost one its all-time greatest singer / songwriters on April 7, 2020 to COVID-19. John Prine was and still is my favorite artist. My wife and I have seen him in concert many times and always looked forward to his annual concert here in the Bay Area of California. But now that has ended. My condolences to his wife, Fiona, and his family. Rest In Peace John. You will be dearly missed. But at least we are fortunate enough to have your great and classic songs to listen to forever.
In May ‘18 I saw Prine perform in Indianapolis at Butler University. He ended with this and watching him dance a jig to it as he exited the stage was a highlight of the show. A copy of the “Tree of Forgiveness” CD was sent upon release to everyone who bought a ticket! That’s never happened to me before. Prine is definitely on my personal Mount Rushmore of music. That concert showed me Prine still has music in his soul despite two serious bouts of cancer and other adversity. Long live John Prine!
I was there, too. It was a sad and wonderful moment, the little dance had an elegiac quality. I am 63 years old and for the first 60 years of my life I lived in a world that had John Prine in it. Hard to get used to living in a world without him.
What an extraordinary thing to do! (Giving copies of his CD to audience members.) The more I learn about him the more I love and appreciate him. The most lovable people in this world are the simplest people. I think it’s because love itself is meant to be simple. The more complex it is the harder it is to understand and therefore not really that good. Real love is like a John Prine song. Simple (easy to understand) and shared freely. So thanks for sharing your story. Although I’ve been a fan since the late seventies, I never had that pleasure of seeing him in person. Wow! What a guy! The world is missing a great human being!
From my mother's memoir: "The hog-shed and chicken house and a small chicken house were built when I was very young. Mother bought chicks and raised them in the small chicken house with a small heater. Then they went into the large chicken house but both had hens and roosters. They built wooden nests with straw for hens to lay their eggs. Thelma and I would pick them out of nests and take them to the cave behind the house and pack them in crates with three dozen in each layer. I think 8 layers - sometimes we'd take two crates plus a five-gallon can of cream to Sioux City to the Safeway store. All the eggs were checked - held up to the light of a candle. The store manager paid us on the spot - we bought groceries etc and used the rest to buy clothes and supplies for the farm"

My all time favorite concert (and I have been to a few) was around 1988 phoenix arizona, the celebrity theatre.Bonnie Raitt opened with an acoustic set, John does his acoustic set, then they do one together, including Angel from Montgomery. What a special evening for everyone lucky enough to be there.
I love the story behind the song but can’t quite line up the lyrics with it. Any insight? What is “crazy bone”? How does the verse about the old man at the end fit into the story?
@@nw7us He was fishing with a friend and the guy told this story of the farmers bringing their eggs to town and dropping their daughters off at the roller rink way back when in Nebraska and he came up with the song. He played it for the guy and he said "Lincoln? Why the hell would I go to Lincoln I'm from Norfolk Nebraska" JP said well it's because Lincoln made for some of the best rhymes in the song.
Seen Johnny boy back in June at the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati. He got a standing ovation when he started dancing around his guitar, he's still got some moves n many years ahead of him.
