He sings like he is in no hurry to get anywhere, and with a simple honest song to keep us all company on the journey. Thanks John Prine for all the warmth and smiles, tears and laughter you brought us through your gift of life and song.
My daughter (20yrs old) was sitting in a Denny's late one night and a table of intoxicated middle-age patrons started belting out John Prine songs (it was the day he died). She joined the table, told them her dad was a HUGE Prine fan and sang a few songs with them 😉

Had to rewind it the last time Jason had a big ole grin sneak up, watched it 3 times. There was this chord change, John led it down the steps so gracefully, so strong, one resonating Martin note at a time. Believe Jason heard that, and appreciated it for what it was. That, and the lyrics.

That's probably my favorite Prine line too. I just discovered him. Took me only 75 years on this Earth to get here. Just glad I did. I love that line because that's how its worked out for me too. In an interview Prime said he never too much favored religion but that he was very big on spirituality. He said if he had been one of those first humans he would have been the guy drawing them pictures on cave walls. With that "I live..." line I think he may have been paraphrasing an old German theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who before Hitler's boys executed him said (to paraphrase) that being close to his God he was able to live in this world without being of this world. Yup, Dammit, that's just too good.!

He sure has a beautiful command of the English language. John Prine is a master of metaphors while also delivering a simple truth with his songs. Who the hell else would think of writing a song about Pluto being dropped from planetary status while also conjuring up feelings about your life, being content, as you wrote. I'm a New Zealander. I have ancestry that fought your civil war on their way from Ireland to New Zealand. We are all travellers, on an unknown mission. The Irish were randomly selected to fight your war for the North or the South based on the money offered to the captains of the arriving ship. All people of good standing want peace. Nobody should be vilified after bloody confrontation so long as they have fought man on man. This current atmosphere of violence against woman, old men and children is something that I, as a man, will stand against. Peace to all and yours. We, the good men, are here for all humanity.
The amount of respect I have for John is surreal. From a mailman with nothing but a dime in his pocket to a world wide sensation. Battling cancer twice and continuing to truck through and keep writing amazing songs for us right till the end. Anytime I’m feeling down a John Prine song manages to turn that around thanks John.
Larry Savage Why leave the decidin’ up to strangers? I put him in My Personal Hall Of Fame, right ‘longside Brother Bob Marley. And others. Lots of others.
When I came back from my 3rd tour of Viet Nam I took a walk on the PCT for 800 miles to decompress. And then I found John Prine. For a guy who wasn't a combat vet; he could still relate. That is the essence of a Great song smith. He can take you to places you've been, even if he hasn't been there. That is a gift very few have. John is a national treasure for his ability to turn a whimsical phrase and tickle your funny bone but kick your head at the same time. And of course I appreciate that he has aged like most of us - rode hard and put away wet! If Buddha had played the guitar.....maybe in another universe....keep a-pickin' John!
A few months ago a regular in a Dorchester dive bar wondered aloud if he could ask me a personal question. Wary, I said uhm, sure. "Whose recent death has affected you the most?" He said it couldn't be family or friends. It took me a while, but I said Anthony Bourdain. This satisfied him, and he played more KENO cards. But it got me thinking. When I left, I told him I changed my mind. "No, John Prine."
I'm embarrassed to say that I only learned of this song (and album} about 6-7 hours ago. I swear, I think I've played it 20 times. I don't know how the hell he does it...but he can deliver songs like no one else. Oh, I also have this Prine album & a couple of t-shirts on the way - ordered from Prine's website.
What a humble and amazing story teller! I didn't know of him until his passing but I've sure enjoyed getting know him these last few months through his creative, funny, and touching lyrics. What a blessing this man was to this messed up world!
According to Bob Dylan, John Prine was the best songwriter ever. I don't need Dylan's affirmation to know that. The special on him a couple nights ago was great. You MUST see and hear it. Rest in Peace John.
Steve Earl said about Townes Van Van Zandt that "Townes was the best songwriter in the US and I would stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and say that!" He could do the same for John. RIP
I don't get this hostility for Bob Dylan. He never himself claimed he was the best or better than others or so on. If you stand on his coffee table and talk about great music by great American musicians, he will join you lol
John used to deliver the mail, with all its messages the people needed. Then he took to delivering joy and messages to a whole lot more people. He was great at both jobs. Hope they make him heaven's messenger man with a guitar. Or perhaps they did that a while ago. You made the world a better place, Postman Prine. You are great.
I am still mourning this man. I have a daughter just turned 25 and a son 28. We went to a JP concert on his 21 birthday. When I told my daughter he died she got hysterical. She works for jfp..free press. I had this great idea we should do a generational piece. Ok mom 🙄. That was a no. The next day she texted me that she did what I asked. Fwd: I remember when I was a child my father sang a song that I didn’t quite understand. I believe he sang it to us because he found humor in the fact that we couldn’t pick up the meaning in the song. It was “Illegal Smile”. As I grew older we would listen to listen to the self titled album “John Prine”. I remember asking if it was Jimmy Buffet and my father would say, “oh god no.” I listened to mostly the radio because I was a young girl who honestly wanted to be like Britney Spears but John’s songs made their way into my catalog. I always enjoyed when my father and mother would play that album. The whole family would chime in and sing “illegal smile”. He was an artist that brought a bond between me and my daddy. My father was my first love. He passed away when I was 14 tragically. I still listened to JP religiously because his music connected me to my father. I remember my father singing “Please don’t Bury me.” Before he passed away. When I got older I had a standard for the boy I’d one day marry. He had to like John Prine. Every man I’ve dated and liked John Prine I took it as a sign that he’d be the one to take my hand. Boy, was I foolish. A boy took me to see JP perform at the Ryman in Nashville. It was one of the most magical nights of my life. But, as it sometimes happens the boy broke my heart. I thought I’d never listen to JP again. Boy, I fooled myself again. I knew that I listened to JP to connect with my first true love, my daddy. I found a new love and he also enjoys John’s music which is me looking at it once again as a sign. The day the news of his death broke out my brother and mother called me. We all have been mourning together. I’d like to imagine that my father is totally stoked to see his favorite artist in the afterlife. I know that it may seem like a lot for a man I never met but his music was a way of hearing my daddy speak and sing to me again. I never took for granted that voice. Rest easy JP.
I give all The Glory to GOD and by the blood of Jesus Christ that John Prine went from critical to the stabilized condition...Thank You Father in heaven for listening to my prayers.. please continue to pray for John and his family.. prayers work..AMEN✝️🙏👍😎😷
No they don`t . That is just silly ,as you must assume that God gave John the virus, which means he is someone I have no desire to worship . He should have given it to Piers Morgan instead. Glad you like JP tho Possum.

No argument from me. He's been called a poor man's Bob Dylan...but I don't see him that way at all. He's as unique a song writer as there ever was, even Dylan himself has high praise for him.

He should be in country Hall of Fame !!!!
Thank you for your service
Everytime I need to ground myself in reality , I listen to John Prine
A few months ago a regular in a Dorchester dive bar wondered aloud if he could ask me a personal question. Wary, I said uhm, sure. "Whose recent death has affected you the most?" He said it couldn't be family or friends. It took me a while, but I said Anthony Bourdain. This satisfied him, and he played more KENO cards. But it got me thinking. When I left, I told him I changed my mind. "No, John Prine."
The working mind of a poet on full display, we dont have many left. Pray some are yet to be exposed .
One of a kind John Prine ...We will not see his likes again
love you always
Mr Prine You did it again!!...This song been stuck in my head all week!!
Theres a concert right now in heaven,,,,We will all miss you John...God Bless you...condolences to your family.....Damn this virus all to..........
John Prine should be running the world...
What a humble and amazing story teller! I didn't know of him until his passing but I've sure enjoyed getting know him these last few months through his creative, funny, and touching lyrics. What a blessing this man was to this messed up world!
John was a troubadour of the truth. I miss him.
My husband and I love to sing along with this one, such a instant classic!
Thanks for the fun John!
...my god - how absolutely, purely good he made me feel inside...sure miss this old friend of us all...
Enjoy the old Paradise. Most of us will observe from 5 miles away.
@@AA-sn9lz You'd have to take that up with Steve Earl I suppose
John used to deliver the mail, with all its messages the people needed. Then he took to delivering joy and messages to a whole lot more people. He was great at both jobs. Hope they make him heaven's messenger man with a guitar. Or perhaps they did that a while ago. You made the world a better place, Postman Prine. You are great.
I miss you John , 😢God Bless and hope you are living at the three of forgiveness
Well, I guess it is actually possible to smile and cry at the same time. RIP John 💚😓.
RIP lonesome John.
Fwd:
I remember when I was a child my father sang a song that I didn’t quite understand.
RIP You fought a good battle. Your music will live on forever.
Prayers for John to recover from the Coronavirus. He is truly a national treasure.
I still miss this man and I never even met him. Legend.
God Bless your Soul and R.I.P Mr. Prine.
We will never be the same...forever lacking now that you're gone. Thank you for the time you shared!
Some humans aren't human. He got it. 😀
So miss you John, I will never forget
John Prine is a genius song writer and a inestimable treasure.
Broken hearts and dirty windows make life difficult to see. Some one asked what is your favorite John prine song, they are all good. How many musicians can you say that about. Thanks for the many songs, he's gone, but I have to hear his music every day.
Looking forward to seeing my hero when he recovers . My summer plans were derailed . Get Well my friend , we'll get it together again . Be Well , Get Well. ! The world needs you now more than ever . Hugs and deep respect for helping me get through it all over all these years . LOVE YOU !
hehehe - gosh what a guy. "I don't live here anyway....." The pandemic took John from all of us but right now he is still saving me from the pandemic. What a terrible awful loss.
We will miss your wonderful sense of humor and songs! R.I.P. John Prine.

RIP John. You had a life full of ups and down but left us fans with some of the greatest writing and performing I have seen in some 40 years. Not a lot of postmen can do what you did.
John writes great songs like this in the same way that regular folks fall out of bed. He must have a thousand of them rolling around in that beautiful mind of his at all times. What a treasure he is.
He's still got it....long live the king.
Thank you-Elvis sucks, or did, He's dead-John ain't!
Sad is gone but Thanks for what u left behind! Prayers for Family and Friends and Fans! God be with you forever ..we may be gone but Life Lives on.Thanks
In these later years, John and Jason sort of fused into one perfect musical union--just incredibly musical joyfulness.
America’s Greatest Song Writer!
No argument from me. He's been called a poor man's Bob Dylan...but I don't see him that way at all. He's as unique a song writer as there ever was, even Dylan himself has high praise for him.
lab rat. whass up?
Him and tom Russell
Most underrated modern poet of our time 🌔🌎💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Underrated?... are you sure? he s gone but will be never forgotten
Give me some Prine and all is right with the world. bought his first record back in 1970 and I'm still listening. I have every one of his recordings and have seen him in concert every time he appears in SoCal. Best country/folk singer in the world. Sing forever, John!
