Ian is an incredible guitarist. And a phenomenal singer. And an amazing song writer. So, yeah, if there’s a finite amount of talent in the universe, Ian is using way more than his fair share.

    Ian uses alternate tunings too.
I’ve found it easier to sing when I tune to C# standard.
I love playing The Oaf , such a killer tune.

Beloved, Life In Your Way,Further Seems Forever,Least Of These, Kevin Cadogan, Mike Turner, Daniel Johns,Mike Einzinger, Switchfoot,Wavorly,Copeland. I use less gain low to med gain sounds. My Nobels Odr1 into my micro terror set to a low gain sound with the odr1 or my ac10 clean and nobels set to med gain. I tune to Eb or Drop Db and rely on chord voicings and how i attack the strings for my heavy sounds. I forgot Future Forestry. They are a huge influence.

…but for the sun is a killer album with a lot of guitar brilliance. Voices have the biggest, heaviest guitar sound that exists outside a metal context.

Heavy tones inspiration other than Big Wreck? Chevelle has printed some of the best dirty tones out there, and Dominic Cifarelli delivers stunningly textured grind. I do my biggest Ian tones with cascading drive pedals into a mostly clean V40 Duchess; love the octave fuzz Rufus Reloaded boosting into the chain!
Love the content you’ve delivered discussing and inspired by You Caught My Eye!!

Hey Shawn. Killer sounding track and playing as always. Yes, I agree . I love Ian Thornly's tone, especially on the tune "The Oaf." As far as high gain sounds I always resort to my CAE 3+ se preamp through my Boogie 2:90. I wish I had a VHT Classic power amp. Love the gain sounds Steve Lukather achieved on Toto's Gypsy Train album. Thanks for the video Shawn. Stay well.

The Generator sounds KILLER! New board is a work of art and the 90's era Tubbs hair is looking badass! Nerd question, Shawn - when you record with the Generator, do you use the built in Two Notes back end or run it into your Bogner cab/SM57/121 mic'd setup?

    • @ShawnTubbs
