I finally saw them in Vancouver doing the 20th anniversary of In Loving Memory Of... Thornley walks out, says something like "Hey, 20 years ago we released In Loving Memory Of..." and the band proceeds to do the entire album, start to finish, no breaks, no talking, no BS. They did Albatross and The Immigrant Song as encores. No joke, I had no clue it was a 20th-anniversary tour. I thought I was going to see them do a regular setlist, but by the third song it donned on me what was going on and I was so stoked, like a kid on Christmas.

I was about 20 when a friend had me listen to a new record called "In Loving Memory of..." and, as a singer with a big voice and a higher kind of range, I had the album on repeat for a month. Then I got to see Big Wreck play an afternoon set on a blisteringly hot summer day set at a festival in Wichita, Kansas. The whole band was hilariously good. Ian's voice and words were bigger than most of the "big singers" I'd ever heard. Cornell and Kennedy definitely came from the same camp.
But a singer with that kind of combined guitar soul, chops and musicianship is really something special. Outside of Kennedy and Chris from Blackstone Cherry, not a lot guys short of Prince really blow your mind in "rock" or "pop". Thing is, not a lot of guys since Leo, Les or Paul did what you did so well, either. THANK YOU for making such great guitars. They are SO good that even Ian seems improved by them, (and that's saying a lot). I can BARELY play but now I'm designing, building and innovating on my own electrics. It's endlessly interesting to me.
Keep changing the world for the better, John. (Great content, Michael. I've watched it several times, over the last 2 crazy years.)

"It's such a tasetful mix between riffage, and licks, and melodies" BOOM! Thank you. I love what I hear, but don't have the expertise to express it. That is perfect. So often guitarists lose me with riffs. While amazing, too often I get taken out of the groove/enjoyment of the song with the riffage. It feels like a rude interuption. Not with Big Wreck. Ian and crew never do anything to disrupt the amazing experience they've carefully and beautifully crafted. Begining to end, Big Wreck provides a complete moment that you put on repeat to experience again and again.

Been on board with Big Wreck since the first record. They are otherworldy and inspired. They are one of those bands that you can't stop listening to. There's something haunting about what Ian brings to the table in melodies and how the songs breath. He also kicks you in the teeth plenty. The Pleasure and the Greed record is often overlooked, but, is just an angry monster of a record. All of the records have something different for that moment in time. It's a constant joy to listen to to learn and you always hear something new. I was lucky to see them in Nashville on the last tour in the fall of last year. First time since the early 90's they made it that far south. The live clips from THAT show are the official videos from the latest record. I was lucky to be front row for that. I have loved this video of Thornely playing for years...just blows me away. I have also recently loved your videos and see how great a player you are...excellent ear and chops! On this vid, you got your ass handed to you...lol. Thornely hit you in your weak spot! I'm not sure where that is because your weak spot crushes my strongest spot. Love your show man!!!!!

Dude....I'm so glad I stumbled on this. I laughed so hard at you, breaking this down and following Ian Thornley thru the chords. He's such a beast like you said and has been for a long time. Love your reaction while wiping the tears away from laughing with you trying to keep up but you obviously know what your talking about. Best reaction video eveeer!!!! Can you react to a more mild song..like blown wide open?? That'd be wicked.

Thornley went to Berkeley and really knows his stuff, those chorus chords moving underneath are awesome. Gotta check out Big Sugar, gave Big Wreck there first break and believe did production on there first record. Monster tone and loud as hell.

The whole original band went to Berkeley. Big sugar was not involved in the production of ILMO, and I believe their first tour was with Dream Theatre.

@@haroldcollins6372 i saw Big Sugar and Big Wreck at McMaster University years ago. They played a few songs together and Thornley stopped the show and wanted to thank Gordie Johnson for taking them on the road early on, this was just as The Oaf was taking off. Just going by what I heard that night. I guess I was wrong on the production part, not the 1st time I've been wrong.

Cool, big sugar is great also.. loudest band I’ve seen. I took lessons from Brian Doherty for a couple years, he mentioned Dream Theatre was their first big tour. I’m sure Big Sugar also took them out as well, seeing as they were around before BW

This entire set Big Wreck did at this Suhr event I have in my playlist. It’s very impressive how good they sounded. Ghosts has a killer vibe. As far as guitar “Blown Wide Open” intro alone is with a listen. I didn’t even realize the guitar was single coil, I always thought it was an HSS with a humbucker because Thornley doesn’t normally play singles.

😂😂😂😂😂 Michael, your reaction to Ian Thornley’s abilities are priceless, brother!!! Ian plays from deep within the recesses of his soul and his well runs deep, my friend! You should watch the entire Shur gig, “Blown Wide Open” is a masterpiece! Great video!!🎸😎

I was giggling through this entire video, every time you paused it like "DUDE Wait till you hear the NEXT LICK!!" :-) It was so great watching you have the same journey through this solo that guitar players have (that I have at least). With the same sour lemon faces, and the same "I think this guy is my new favorite guitar player" moments. Thornley deserves every cover story on every guitar mag, and they just ignore him. Welcome aboard!

I saw them play at a small local rock festival about 3 years ago. I stood right in front of Ian, and it was so amazing to watch him play. What's really funny is that even though pretty much everyone who hears him play comments on how much of a beast he is, he doesn't seem to see it; in that Anderton's interview someone mentioned, the interviewer made a comment about people wanting to play like him, and Ian said "You can! It's not that hard," without any hint of sarcasm or ego. It's incredible.
(Also, my guitar teacher used to play in Ian's other band, Thornley. They're really good friends. My teacher's band is called Art Of Dying. They're worth a listen too, I think.)

There's a podcast interview with him too, from Sept. 2023, the show's called The Stumble Forward, and it gives you a very good idea of the kind of person he is, his approach to his art, and work ethic.

Ian is my absolute favorite guitar player. He rules and obviously can sing his ass off as well. Saw them here in Nashville at Mercy Lounge 3 years ago and was glued in place in front of the bassist all night. It is stupid hard to impress anyone here in Music City as some of the worlds best musicians are here. But... most of them were there to see him with me as well. Thats how awesome this dude is!
