My favourite hymn of all time. I was introduced to it by one of my primary school teachers, in the UK, Mr Smythe. He wanted someone to sing it as a solo for morning assembly. There were no volunteers, I can't sing, but he asked me to read it out to the school. The words have stayed with me ever since. A couple of years ago I was visiting my daughter and her family and went to her church. The hymn was sung as a solo, and I burst into tears. At the end of the service the pastor spoke with me and asked me why I was crying. I told him the story and he asked me tell the whole church. The hymn tells what the Christian life is about. It has to be Christ centred, he has to be everything.
In my opinion The President’s Own United States Marine Band is THE best Wind symphony/ensemble/orchestra in the USA and dare I say in the world. The North Texas Wind Symphony is a very close second.
I played this as a freshman and I was the only euphonium player and when we played the song during class I would get nervous that I would mess it up and get yelled at but played it perfectly during LGPE
We played this in high, though not to this level. The first verse solo is a baritone, and that range is extremely high. Kudos for making it smooth without cracking...
The original Irish poem is quite old indeed, not the melody. This hymn is sung to the melody noted as “Slane” in hymnals, an Irish folk tune in 3/4 time, first published as "With My Love on the Road" in Patrick Joyce's Old Irish Folk Music and Songs in 1909. *The original Old Irish text,* _"Rop tú mo Baile",_ is often attributed to Saint Dallán Forgaill in the 6th century. However, scholars believe it was written later than that. Some date it to the 8th century; others putting it as late as the 10th or 11th century. A 14th-century manuscript attributed to Adhamh Ó Cianáin contains a handwritten copy of the poem in Middle Irish, and is held at the National Library of Ireland. A second manuscript is at the Royal Irish Academy, dating from about the 10th or 11th century.
Three more 20th century hymns have been set to the same tune. The first was _"Lord of All Hopefulness"_ written by Jan Struther around 1931. The second was _"Lord of Creation, to Thee be All Praise"_ written by J. C. Winslow and first published in 1961. The third was a popular wedding hymn, _"God, In the Planning and Purpose of Life",_ written by John L. Bell and Graham Maule and first appearing in publication in 1989. In addition, it was recorded as a Christmas carol in 2003. _Gå inte förbi_ ("Don't Walk Past") is a duet-single set to the tune, recorded by Swedish singer Peter Jöback and Norwegian singer Sissel Kyrkjebø and written by Ulf Schagerman. Jöback sings the lyrics in Swedish while Sissel sings in Norwegian. It was released as a single in 2003 and at an extended reissue of Jöback's Christmas album _Jag kommer hem igen till jul._ It was a hit in Norway and Sweden in the Christmas time of 2003 and a music video directed by Mikadelica was made in Denmark.

The performance is wonderful! But,The song is not good enough at using flute and piccolo. Flute solo is good, but piccolo is too noticeable in the passage.
this arrangement contains some of the most wonderful sonorities that, after a lifetime career as a professional conductor of wind bands, I have come across. More importantly, from an artistic perspective, it captures the nobility and grandeur of this old Irish melody while at the same time reflecting the words of the later hymn.

This is probably my favorite piece in band literature. So much great solo work, and this entire piece was flawlessly played.
