I just learned that today. As I listened, I was surprised by how well this piece fit this band's sound. It competes well with full orchestra performances.
He wrote two suites for wind band and 'A Moorside Suite' for Brass Band which he later transcribed for both wind band and orchestra. Gustav Holst was one of Britain's finest composers and it fills me with joy that his works are appreciated the world over
It's too wispy, they perform the same notes but can't quite fill a room the same way a strings section would in this piece. Winds always thinking they're louder than they really are.
That last note that trumpet held over just a tad and she looked PISSED 😂 that was such a beautiful piece, extremely hard to play. I love this band. ❤️ I’m auditioning for the Marine Corps Band within the next few weeks, my goal is to play with these phenomenal musicians one day.
I had a close association with the band a few years back and I can tell you that sloppy playing and careless mistakes are not tolerated. Screw up once too often and you find yourself playing fourth chair whatsit in the Marine Motorpool Band at the Clam Point Maine Air Station.
That last trumpet note holdover is something of a performance tradition among trumpeters. The conductor began her Marine Band career as a trumpet player, and probably knows this.
@@elliotgov I'm sure it was very good, but let's be realistic, a high school ensemble won't play as well as "The President's Own" which is one of if not the best band in the world.

Freshman in the top band at my high school, we’re playing this for our February concert Edit: I play French horn and my favorite part is the little German movement towards the beginning
I played this in High School (and Copland's Buckaroo Holiday too), our band had no strings. These are the first recordings I've seen without strings (other than the bass), it REALLY brings back joyful memories. VERY well played, and thank you! Also, my family and I got to see the Commandant's Own at the State Fair of Texas a few years ago......what a treat!
Well played, U.S. Marine Band. Please, however, notify your videographers that they could occasionally show the horns when they are featured in the score, for example at 1:40 (when the Major quickly goes back to conducting the low brass) or at 2:11 when a little figure in the cornet gets all the attention. → A former Navy bandsman, just sayin'.
Definitely a little bit of a tear at the beginning, if it were a studio recording they would have started over. The band is great, but I would have loved to see a cleaner recording. Ah well, back to Stars and Stripes.
The United States Marine Band absolutely killed it. If you're looking for an example of sonority, look no further. Listen to the brass from 2:36 to 2:46. How is that even possible? They are musical super heroes and possess special powers, that's how.

The whole chorale has this grandness that makes me think of marching band every time. We just started bringing it back but I imagine I’ll cry by senior year by hearing it
Cecil Spring Rice wrote words to the passage from this that have become a favorite British patriotic song. It is totally appropriate that a military band should play this so beautifully. The words from the poem are: The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, that lays upon the altar the dearest and the best. Thanks Marine Band
We’re reading this in band today (this exact arrangement too lol) I hope it goes well 👀 We’re either going to perform Jupiter or Mars for our end of year concert. I’m a sucker for Venus tho, I love a good ballad, but our band program took a huge hit with Covid. I feel like it will take years for most high schools to rebuild their band program
What has happened to this young lady conducting? I really like her demeanor on the podium. She is very talented! This is a recording that I have listened to often...an outstanding excecution and emotional performance by the greatest band in the world! Thank you.
Is it just me or does the principal trumpet have meh phrasing? Don’t get me wrong, he’s technically incredible (obviously tired chops), but during lyrical sections, he ends each note with a mini crescendo into and kinda “flicks” into the next note. It’s kinda distracting from the contour of the phrase.
Soy brasileño del noreste de Brasil y he escuchado muchas bandas de música militares, muy bien sintonizadas para ningún músico a poner defecto, pero similar a la banda de Marina de los Estados Unidos, me parece que son pocas.

It is the US Marine Band. Transcriptions of orchestral music for concert band have been a staple of band repertoire since the late 19th century. In the days before radio and phonographs, most Americans first heard the great works of Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, and Wagner from traveling concert bands, as they didn’t live near enough to a city to hear an orchestra.
Wow - the brass sound tired! This must have been a huge program to tucker out these monster players to the degree that it's so noticeable. Still a masterful performance in so many ways.
An amazing performance and arrangement. Just a little disappointed that the double bassoon stayed on its stand in the slow low passage near the end. Ok my main instrument was bass trombone before I took up bassoon and your guy played with a great sound. But I still think the double bassoon would have added to the colour blend here, especially with the lack of low strings in a band. Loved it though, as I do all your performances.

hi. I have recently played this piece in a concert with the Auburn university youth orchestra this month. I am trying to come up with a theme for our spring semester. have any suggestions? My next question goes out to the flute section. What should I do about the middle joint of my colored beginner's flute having a slight bend in it? I have already asked the band director at my school. He suggested that I let our school system's band representative take a look. I decided to ask around from other fellow musicians on youtube as well before I do anything to my flute and make any mistakes.
I know, right? Nearly every recording I've heard has this same issue. Must be conductors' preference... Also, the wind instruments in this band might not be able to sustain a note as long as the stringed instruments in a full orchestra, so they could be playing it faster to compensate...
just amazing....but as a euphonium player - well, all the good parts are given to the horns!!! lol But it's hard to find any fault not only in the arrangement but in the great playing!

Stephen Putnam He messed up in the first beat
James Fulkerson He misplayed a note. Not something you'd expect from this quality of band, but it happens to the best of us I guess.

Also at the very end the trumpet held out too long and you can tell the conductor was about to strangle them off stage

Conductor had a look of "Why did you screw up the trumpet solo......, they were only 8th notes..." =)
Where did the trumpet mess up?
At the 2:12 mark, there is a trumpet solo there, he had small kerfuffle and the conductor had a brief look, just pause it and you will see it =)
all I know is that he's dead now
It's funnier when you realize that the conductor used to be one of the main trumpet players of this band herself before she became assistant director.
