That moment, where ALL of you are playing downright perfectly, not just that, the moment where all of you are connected, where every single human being around you is together. This, right here, is why we have music, why we cherish and love it more than imaginable. Music brings us together.:)
I was told that a conductors job is not to be a metronome. But to extract the right sound and emotion of the moment from his musicians. He uses the tools at his disposal to get it. Crescendos, de crescendos, accents, tempo, volume, etc. this conductor knows his job well. He has such high quality musicians which afford him the opportunity to focus almost entirely on sound and emotion. In some places he doesn't even conduct some of the beats in the bar, instead you see him expressing his emotions through his movements to engage the orchestra, "this is what I'm feeling, the sound coming to me is having this effect, keep it up".
I've heard about a dozen or so renditions of Jupiter from different symphonies/conductors over the years, and I have to say this one is my favorite. I've never heard the middle part of this movement played with so much expression. I'll give almost all the credit to the conductor, Eiji Oue. This is his piece.
This version is a masterclass in conducting. I come back to it time and time again and the connection to the piece from everyone involved is pure magic. Chills and tears every time. Bravo.
I think most musicians reach a point where it's hard to remember why we're doing it. I know I have. Six hours a day in a tiny practice room in the basement of a conservatory building. Going home with bleeding lips or blisters all over your hands. Is this really worth it? And then there are performances like this that bring it all back. Sometimes, rarely, there are moments when you lose yourself in a perfection, and it's all the more perfect because it's shaggy and swelly and everyone's sweating and barely holding on. (Well, the Osaka Philharmonic is a bit beyond the shaggy stage.) It's an out-of-body experience, only you aren't looking down on the scene, you're floating above it in a swirl of lights and sounds. And you truly understand what it means to be a part of something bigger. In 13 years, I've felt this way twice. And it's enough. Oue-sensei gets it. The world needs more people like him :)
It's a tough question. I decided that it wasn't, so I dropped out of conservatory and started working in a totally different field. I like performing much better now that I'm not training to do it professionally.
Seen this hundreds of times now, totally in awe of the talent in the Osaka Orchestra and Oue. I wish there were more people on earth like Oue, a conductor filled with passion and reverence for Jupiter. I always tear up at the mid portion and can feel this work is bigger and greater than myself, a gift from God.
Sitting in a room, no lights, pitch black, all by yourself. The pain you feel is second to none. After listening to this piece, however, I have felt a new level of pain. It hurts, but it hurts brilliantly. It's like nothing I have ever felt before. It resonates deep within my body, through my bones on so many different levels. I can feel my stomach churning and my heart skipping a few beats every couple of seconds. I can safely say that nothing has ever affected me like this piece in my life time. The room is all of a sudden getting less dark, and I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. I've have escaped that dark room, which was but a metaphor for the dark times in my life. Thank you Holst, I owe my life to you.

This is the most brilliant performance of Holst's The Planets I have ever heard. I first heard it as a child and everytime it's just as exciting as the first!
3:08-4:52 is the heart and soul of this piece. Oue is directing until 3:50 when he is being pulled by the orchestra and he is in awe of both the orchestra and the music. I can't think of any other version of Jupiter that has this much feeling to it. Oue reflects something alot of people lack, passion. He and the Osaka orchestra joined together to create this great piece of music and they should be very proud of it.
This is testament to the idea the music is nationally, internationally and worldwide an understood language irrelevant of what language you speak simply amazing xxxx
i nearly cry while listening too this.... i played this this year for my middle school band competition... we won, and i just love this song. my favorite song, not only classical, just overall, hands down.

the thing about this, is that you can tell how much effort was put into playing this piece and arranging it. After knowing it, they are just enjoying the preformance altogether. The conductor feels like a part of the players, since an orchestra is basically his instrument that he carefully has to identify each section, and to the others the conductor would literarly be lost without him. It's like an instrument in itself. It is so good that even the conductor is entertaining.
Never mind the music... this guys passion for it is just something else....and who can blame him....one of the greatest pieces ever composed.... Conductor, orchestra, music in perfect harmony......it doesn't get much better than that
This peice has the single best chorale in any orchestral piece of music. There are no words how to describe the amount of beauty in it. It brings grown men to tears. I love Gustav Holst! :)
Jupiter (and Holst in general) always amazes me, but the passion in this performance... it's beautiful. Good music can amplify emotions; great music can change and alter them completely. And I'm thrilled that technology has reached the point where it's possible to share this with people the world over. I just wish more of the general population held an appreciation for music such as The Planets; even without words, music has a myriad of lessons to teach us.

So much precision in the sound scope, in the crescendos, the volume... so much balanced, so much close to the inner emotion... If you go to Japan and can listen him, please do it for me.

I like this conductor. Each conductor have their own style of conducting. I think his moves are more direct and enthusiastic compared to others. For example, Maestro Bernstein is very limited but sounds really clear and beautiful. Maestro Gergiev has really a lot of motions but also limited in some point; still makes GREAT music that many can't do. They are my favorite conductors because of their unique style. However, I think Maestro Eiji Oue is also great conductor because of his powerful and non-limited actions, and his direct conducting that everyone can easily comprehend.

One of my favorite pieces of music of all time. I was a French horn player. and the middle of the piece was my favorite part. The conductor did an awesome job of letting the horns take over that section of the piece and making it soar. What a wonderful job. Usually pieces performed by ensembles from asia and japan, while technically perfect lack emotion. This however had both. I got goosebumps.
The best Jupiter recording of all. Top quality orchestra. Tempo neither too fast or too slow and the intensity is subtle and just right in all the right places.

I'm nearly 50 now. My parents played me the whole Holst Planet Suite as a kid and I always loved it. Though what I really love about this clip is - apart from the beautiful music - the heart and soul that Eiji Oue puts into the conducting.
the people who I got to experience this great music with may no longer be around me but through these melodies I can never forget them. I only wish I could go back to the days where we filled the auditorium with Mr. Holst's amazing sounds...

Yeah. It adds a sense of humanity and, more specifically, that this man does what he does because he enjoys it, not because he was paid to do it. It gives the viewer a real awareness of the work that went into this.
i can understand how the leader is feeling.. its just that great feelings ppl who understand music feels when music surrounds. i am in a band. and i play flute.. when i'm there performing and i hear music everywhere loud or low,, it touches my heart deep inside..feels pleasure to be part of it.
Amazingly original (look at the date of composition), imaginative, and memorable music which is the basis of most Hollowood film music ever since, especially John 'Holst' Williams. And what a fantastic performance! Thanks for posting.
In my opinion the subtle diminuendo starting at 3:45 is what makes this recording (thus the conductor) so special. This is the first time I've ever heard that particular passage be played like that and it made it magical.
max conran It looks that way does'nt it, and indeed it is very emotional, he is actually gesturing to the orchestra to tone down for that particular part because it is supposed to be a little quieter at that particular interval, but you knew thaaaat, lol! Yeah. It adds a sense of humanity and, more specifically, that this man does what he does because he enjoys it, not because he was paid to do it. It gives the viewer a real awareness of the work that went into this.
i can understand how the leader is feeling.. its just that great feelings ppl who understand music feels when music surrounds. i am in a band. and i play flute.. when i'm there performing and i hear music everywhere loud or low,, it touches my heart deep inside..feels pleasure to be part of it.

Amazingly original (look at the date of composition), imaginative, and memorable music which is the basis of most Hollowood film music ever since, especially John 'Holst' Williams. And what a fantastic performance! Thanks for posting.
In my opinion the subtle diminuendo starting at 3:45 is what makes this recording (thus the conductor) so special. This is the first time I've ever heard that particular passage be played like that and it made it magical.

max conran It looks that way does'nt it, and indeed it is very emotional, he is actually gesturing to the orchestra to tone down for that particular part because it is supposed to be a little quieter at that particular interval, but you knew thaaaat, lol!

We played this piece this year with a guest conductor with the same passion this guy has. It's truly a privilege to play with a conductor like this
