  • Turns out that if you want to livestream AND keep a recording of your DJ stream online afterwards, there is currently only one option: RUclips. In this video, Phil Morse runs through a 3 step copyright "test" that we use prior to all of our DJ livestreams, that - depending on the outcome of your test - you’ll know whether you can use all the tracks you wanted to use, or whether you need to avoid one (or more) of them.

FYI Guys, the tips he mentions in this video though in theory should avoid your live streams from being blocked, youtubes system often falsely still can block your live stream, even if the track is permitted to be uploaded with a yellow circle. Making it extremely difficult to prepare the right songs. And its also not the same for everyone. As a test I ripped a live stream dj mix from someone elses channel that ran on loop 24/7, I tried to live stream it as a test and wamn, it blocked my stream with the black screen of death meanwhile his runs just fine.

Great content! I'm kind of in between the two sides. I think it's import for artists that their music is protect. That's why we have laws. And me as an musician myself I would not want to go back to the time when everyone could post everything he wants on YT like wild west stealing content without any border. I know it's though for DJs. They totally act within the law and YT is saying: "nope dope. please have a moment to manage 35 content id claims every mix you post."
But at the end of the day i think its more important to protect the music/art and the work of the people behind. Hopefully the algorithm will be developed

Hi, I think the system has flaws, at least for me. But I can't figure out the cause, can you please help? It might be of some kind of utility for someone else.
Long story short, I wanted to upload a mix. A week ago, I dropped the track selection (as you suggest) on iMovie, edited with a simple image, rendered it in the lowest quality possible, uploaded the whole thing on YT. Only one track had a yellow eye (only for Russia).
Then I recorded the mix, dropped it in DaVinci Resolve, Edited with the video file from the dj set, rendered it in 1080p and 60 fps, uploaded on YT. This time, 4 tracks with problems: 2 with red eye (1 of which is the exact same one that gave me the yellow eye a week ago), 2 with yellow eye (for dozens of countries).
My first thought was "well, they must've changed the copyright policies for those 4 tracks in this week". So I tried another thing. This time on CapCut. Image, lowest quality possible, file audio of the mix, uploaded on YT.
Guess what: this time, the "copyright profile" of the video was the exact same one showed for the first test video of a week ago. The oddest thing is that it doesn't seem a problem of track identification: it gives the correct track ID every time. It just gives two different copyright policies for the exact same track. And it clearly isnt' neither a matter of time, nor a matter of the mixed version vs the original one.
The only thing I can think of is that there is more than one version for some tracks (kinda like original mix and radio edit..?) in the main source used by the algorithm, and at the moment of copyright detection, depending on the quality of the file, it identifies one version or the other (with perhaps one having copyright problems and the other one not).
I know it doesn't make much sense but nothing of all of this does. I mean, it's not a matter of time, It's not a matter of mixing, It might be a matter of video quality, but why in hell should it make youtube correctly identify the same track while giving two completely different copyright detections?! it's the same damn track!!
I don't know, I think I'm going insane. Anyway, I've consumed a lot of your content in the past months so thank you for all your work, I hope you or someone else can help

Great guide, I watched and tried it out. I have several mix's on youtube all with varying copyright allowances. I tried a mix that had zero issues except can't stream in Russia. All was going well on youtube live as a test and then 45 mins in, wallop, the video is stopped as it had found a copyright issue. I think I was that 1% on that stream, tried it again the next day and I got banned for 1 week due to community guidance? No idea what that entails except that as part of my experiment to see what viewing figures I could get I called the mix "Ibiza live DJ mix", maybe that was the issue that I wasn't in Ibiza (wished I was though). So at present, would I trust youtube live to DJ on following an upload and checking copyright, Id say it is too easy to be that 1% with a likely stop of the stream mid set.

I had a livestream on another channel of mine get blocked during the actual stream, and a copyright notice & strike that said this content goes against RUclips 'Spam, deceptive practices, & scams policies'.. and that if I do it again I will not be able to stream, upload or comment for 1 week. This was using music that I had previously uploaded like in this video and then livestreamed in a DJ Set so please be careful when streaming. I have also had a quite successful Channel for DJ streams get deleted for good because of livestreamed dj sets. I find Twitch has been great for livestreaming.

It sucks you have to preplan so much and do all this first just to see which tracks are ok.

I have a cousin that streams on YT, and he can't go longer than 2 hours and 30 minutes, as YT takes down his show, it is always at that mark.

[WITHOUT copyright issues] ?? All copyright from RUclips has been apply anyway. Correct the title please. Your tips are only for heavy copyright claims (red ball), but ever YT putting a warning. Thanks. PS.: No one real DJ, want to make a 2 hour test video (edit, render and upload) to get what song are with red ball...

I don't understand why some labels are so anal about copyright. Don't they realise they need DJs to play their songs for them to sell and become popular???

Pretty sure RUclips doesn't monetize live DJ streams while they're happening. Now they'll just say you're involved in 'spam, deceptive practices, or scams' if you live stream that has any copyright detectability on it at all. The issue is not them just blocking your live stream from being seen, but them canceling the stream entirely, causing your streaming software to crash (and often the recording), and giving you a violation flag. As much of a drag having pre-prepared sets is, even that's not enough anymore. Twitch is completely reliable, though, and FB will let current listeners continue listening and even save a stream that gets flagged. The only reliable way to get around YT issues is to simply upload your recording later.

If it's doing that now, then it has very recently changed, and if so, this is the first we've heard of it.
