- I overlooked the valvestem seals during my previous rebuild. Now that I have the motor out, I'm going to fix it by installing the correct valve stem seal to hopefully solve an oil leak I noticed around the exhaust ports. What's next on the list for the 240LSX recovery?

Use compressed air in each cylinder next time. Not good to let the valves fall into the chamber and use the piston to push them back up. You can damage the guides as well as the valve itself.
It's crazy he did it like this when the engine was out. If your engine is out just pull the heads off 😭😂

Just an FYI you don't want to use a torque wrench as a breaker bar. Just use it for torqueing down and thats it. Thanks for the video though.
Dude you saved my life. I was taking a valve spring off and the seal ripped off with the damn spring 🤦🏿♂️. I thought the heads had to go back to the machine shop haha thanks man. I've got new seals and will be seating that one today

Bro you do them one at a time so your valves don't drop like yours did. To each his own but on these high dollar builds I dont take chances. Holy shit.... your lucky you didnt have to pull the heads off.
Yes, it's risky but worked for me. So it's possible from my experience. But to be safe, do it as you mentioned.
Your a mad man lol. Im not knocking it tho bro. Good for you to have the courage and ambition to put yourself out there. Im torn right now on what seals to get btr or tsp top hat style btr doesnt make one for dual springs.

I have. 1998 gmc k1500 5.0 liter sl z71 auto .... if. Put the piston at top dead center will the valve not fall in the piston chamber allowing m to change my valve stem seals ?

How did you know the entire valve was not going to fall into the cylinder - thought it was possible to lose them all the way into the cylinder. Great video. I wish my job I did on my Suburban was when the engine was out! So easy. And I love that spring tool!
Thanks! Never heard of them falling in there, but I tried and they didn't so that's a good thing. Yes, it's definitely easier outside of the engine bay.
@@GTContent after doing that with no compressed air or having the appropriate cylinder at dead top center while working on it. Was a big gamble and you won. You should go buy some loto tickets

@@boosted2.4_sky friend did this on his Suburban and only raised the piston to TDC. Never had an issue with valves falling in. Never used compressor or any other technique like rope or anything.
The original ones you have installed in the beginning of the video look like the BTR seals they use them with dual valve springs so the seal clears the inner springs

Oil consumption results from the valve cover with pcv, if the valvecover is 1997-2010 style, is a major cause, it was fixed for 2011-2016 LS Engines.
Great vid man. As for your carport cover you may want to look into someone that makes them in a canvas type material that of course water doesn't go through. Just a thought.

oil cant leak between the valve spring seat there is nothing for it to leak through there the opening where it leaks is at the top of the valve guide where the seal goes over.
Those other seals were fine, its actually what's used on a dual spring setup
I am installing dual spring setup on my Ls. Is it normal to have that gap between the seal and retainer? I wasnt sure if i got wrong seals

It's actually supposed to be used for DOHC engines but also works well with LS1/2/3's.

Can I replace LS valve stem seals withiout pulling the heads ?
My LS1 put out clouds of blue smoke after it's warmed up and shut off for 10 or 15 minutes and I restart it. It goes away within a few minutes and doesn't smoke anymore. Is that a symptom of valve guide seals? If not what is it a symptom of?the only time it smokes is once it's warmed up shut off and restarted again around 10 minutes later.

@lsx434 In 1983, I was working on imports at an independent shop and need one as well. Using a jack handle and some scraps I welded one up. I was doing valve stem seals to freshen up a 2003 5.3L and only needed a longer bar to reach the ends. Other than that, I used shop air to hold the valves up. They are closed during the power stroke, so placing the cylinder in this location, I installed my home-made flex plate lock and compressed air.
Please be careful as most engines will bend valves using this method by simply cranking the engine. So try to create what you need only once. Best of luck to all. ASE Master Tech since 78 now disabled and hurts, as I like to get one thing done per day, but that’s life.

U should never let the valve drop into the cylinder, they make a tool that screws into ur spark plug hole and allows u to hook ur air line to it that supplys compressed air into the cylinder and keeps the valve raised. U can bend the valves by trying to rotate the engine to force the valve back up into the seal. Or they can drop to far and u will have to pull the heads off to retrieve them.
I wouldn't say never, but I only like to do it on cylinders at tdc so they don't actually fall down in there.

I’ve DREAMED of doing this for the last 20+ years. One of the nice things about the LS block is that, unlike the Gen I and Gen II, the 10 bolt pattern for the head makes the LS block more amenable to a DOHC changeover. In fact, Mercruiser Marine ready sells DOHC heads (but not VTEC) for the LS. Asode from oiling modifications and setting up a cam drive, the block os pretty much good to go.
Of course, you would need to reverse engineer Honda heads (probably K- series) for the LS block. You would also need new intake and exhaust manifolds to take advantage of the improved flow characteristics of DOHC heads (rather than compromising things by adapting the new heads to existing LS manifolds). And you would definitely need appropriate cams. It would admittedly be a large undertaking. But the potential of such a setup on the LS platform would be HUGE.
Did the engine smoke before this?
Are you asking because you had this problem? I had a 5.3 that would smoke on startup, I changed the valve stem seals and it stopped

ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!! First off you are supposed to pressurize the cylinder with compressed air to keep the valve stuck closed when doing this. WHY you ask!!!! Because although the valve did not fall into the cylinder there is A LOT of carbon on the top of the cylinder that the valve could have caught on as it was being raised back into position. This carbon could have caught the valve since it is at an extreme angle to the piston top and bent the hell out of the valve. Also since you had all the spark plugs in the heads you are working against the combined compression of all cylinders and you would NEVER have been able to feel if a valve had caught an edge and was hung up on the top of the piston and beginning to bend. Next YOU USED A TORQUE WRENCH AS A BREAKER BAR!!!!!!! I guess if it’s a POS that you don’t care or use to get accurate reading then go ahead and use it if it is all you have. Also HOW DID YOU NOT KNOW YOU USED THE WRONG SEALS IN THE FIRST PLACE????? Last why would you NOT pull all the plugs out of the heads to make turning the motor over by hand easier?!?!?!?!?! Lucky for you it all worked out BUT this is by no means the correct way to do this procedure!!!!!!
